Sweet & sour pork, fried rice & the worst chow mein I ever had

I had how hopes "Kim's Chow Mein" was going to finally be the restaurant that gave me that " Ratatouille feeling* instead I got heartburn, indigestion & diarrhea. If, I can't dine in I will past is motto diving into "2023"

Curry tofu ($11). Tasty & fragrant, though very liquid w/lots of oil. Tofu overcooked and soft/soggy.

I love old-school Americanized Chinese restaurants, especially those in the Midwest. Kim's Chow Mein is like a time capsule and serves a rapidly vanishing style of cooking. It's not spectacular, and the leftovers don't hold up well, but it's perfectly respectable (hence the 3 stars, which is not a bad review in my book). Located in a turn of the century building in St. Paul, it's neighborhood-centric and perfect with thick blue carpet and office ceiling tiles (I know, that sounds dated and weird, but I love it; it reminds me of my childhood). The vegetable egg rolls ($5.25) are great here: a layered wrapper with a nice filling. Not oily, not dry, not mushy. Just perfect and nicely crisp. The kung po tofu ($11) doesn't have a ton of flavor, but is fine (I got mine without celery). The tofu is destroyed, though, and slippery/soft/soggy in the liquidy sauce. The curry tofu ($11) is better with a fragrant sauce, but has a similarly watery/liquid sauce. That said, it's flavorful and better than the gloopy, cornstarch-laden sauces at other Chinese spots. Lastly, I liked the freshness and lightness of the vegetable lo mein ($10.50). Stop by Kim's Chow Mein for solid Americanized Chinese food. Hunan Restaurant in Bloomington and Yangtze in St. Louis Park are even better.

Ever have the hankering for American-Chinese chow mein with the crunchy noodle bed? This is your spot, if you do! It's clean & very fast service. A pile of food for $7.01 (tax INCLUDED) for Special #1

The restaurant is spacious and can easily accommodate larger groups of people. The food is from what I remember has been consistent and delicious, the only thing that's notable changed is the price, which can be on the pricier side nowadays unfortunately. This time around I took a small group of friends here and ordered some of my favorites. The peking style pork chop is a classic here, deep fried and moist with a sweet and sour sauce. The best part about this dish is that there's no bones either (unlike some of the other pork dishes). The beef chow fun is what I believe the best beef chow fun in MN. It's so freaking good I think you just have to try it for yourself. Another classic starter dish I got was the seafood tofu soup. Hot, thick seafood soup with tofu is refreshing to start with, and when you top it off with a dash of white pepper it gets even better. The fried oysters are a recent addition to my favorites; cripsy without too much fishiness/oceanic flavor, and also very meaty. The batter and salt/pepper onion flavoring is also very strong and pairs well with the oysters. And lastly I usually get some sort of vegetable. This time around I got the yu choi in garlic sauce, which was clean and just tender enough to add a nice bite of fresh veggie to our meal. I would also recommend the achoy or chinese brocolli if you're into that as well. They also give you a free dessert of what I think is taro tapicoa soup? Either way it's a nice sweet treat to end the meal on.

It helps too to have a well maintained, attractive place to eat. Shuang Cheng has ticked those boxes for three and half plus decades. Let's start with one of the most basic items: Wonton Soup. Boring, I hear you say! Well, consider this: broth that has a deep, deep flavor and wasn't something that was an afterthought. Generous slices of roasted pork, tender wonton wrappers stuffed with a great-tasting filling. Boring? Hardly. It's literally the best wonton soup I've ever had. OK, what about something like lobster with black bean sauce. Nailed it. Sweet, generous portion of lobster in a sauce so good, you can use it as a dip for your lobster and it's fantastic over the rice. EMPEROR'S CHICKEN (15.85) - My wife varied from her usual Sesame Chicken (which she thinks is better than any other Chinese restaurant) and is a lightly breaded and deep fried chicken fillet slices of ham over a bed of bok choy and mushrooms. Perfect she said. The service is always good, the restaurant was remodeled a few years ago and if you can overcome the parking challenge in Dinkytown, this traditional Cantonese restaurant deserves a permanent place on your regular restaurant rotation. Enough said.

It was nice visiting and enjoying some of our previously go-to dishes. The soft shell crab made with golden garlic style was as delicious as I remembered, although at a much higher price now ($44+) for the dish. The seafood soup was a nice start to our meal, would have been even better if they had red vinegar. The mapo tofu and eggplant dishes that we ordered ended up being very similar in taste/sauce/seasoning but still pretty good. The service was pretty fast and the staff was friendly.

We were able to find free street parking nearby, because of parking lot renovations. As soon as we sat down, our waitress made sure we had everything we needed, including chili oil and sriracha for us. She checked in on us throughout our meal without being overbearing and made us feel very welcome. Since it was our first visit, we appreciated that we never felt rushed to order and had plenty of time to look over the menu. The pho was really solid. I loved the clear, deep flavorful broth, and the Vietnamese coffee was perfectly balanced and not too sweet. Unfortunately, they were out of bánh mì during our visit, but honestly that just gives me another reason to come back. Between the good food and excellent service, I can definitely see why locals love this place. I'd recommend giving it a try if you're looking for a great food and a welcoming dining experience.

Proteins all served at correct doneness in the Pho Dac Biet so you get the tougher cuts well done and rendered and the thin steak raw so it cooks in the broth. Great side accompaniments, Thai basil still on the stalk and living, fresh bean sprouts, Sri Racha and chiles in oil depending on your tastes, squirt bottle of hoisin. The only tiny nitpick I have is I wish they had bigger spoons available for those of us who like to mix sauces and soup in the spoon instead of muddying up the bowl. Also Vietnamese coffee is prepared old fashioned, not in a boba cup where you can't tell if it was made just now or weeks ago. Great service. This is a tiny little joint which is exactly what you expect from a world class Pho place.

The scallion pancakes were super crispy, the Szechuan dumplings had a LOT of garlic + chili oil (in the best way), and the Shanghai pork buns were juicy and full of flavor. Extremely Disappointing -- Save Your Money…read more I honestly don't understand how Tea House gets rated as a top place. From the outside appearance and lack of upkeep to the service and, most importantly, the food, the entire experience was disappointing. The service was odd, the staff didn't seem very familiar with the menu, and there were several misses that made the experience even less enjoyable. The food itself was mediocre at best--and honestly, some of it was just bad. Then came the bill: over $75 plus tip for three people, with two lunch specials and three drinks. For what we received, the price was absolutely ridiculous. For me, this was a hard pass. The food wasn't worth the money, the service wasn't impressive, and the overall experience left a lot to be desired. Don't waste your time, and especially don't waste your money.
