Our foodie family recently had the pleasure of dining at Kimu Sushi in Long Beach, CA, an unexpectedly good Japanese restaurant in a location you wouldn't typically associate with such high-quality cuisine. The sheer variety and freshness of the seafood presented to us was simply outstanding, rivaling even the best spots in Little Tokyo, LA. The manager, Bond, and the chef curated an off-menu meal especially for our family. The experience began with a comforting bowl of miso soup, followed by the exquisite taste of sashimi sweet prawn. The tender calamari, made with Japanese squid, was a delightful start. We then enjoyed very fresh raw oysters and mussels, each bite bursting with oceanic freshness. One of the highlights was the Kimu roll, a masterpiece filled with tuna and a variety of other fish, offering a complex yet harmonious flavor profile. The meal culminated with the main dish: a beautifully presented Omakase selection and uni sushi, each piece meticulously prepared to perfection. The presentation was a visual feast, with vibrant and expertly arranged sashimi. Our selection included king salmon, tuna, otoro, snapper, scallops, uni, sashimi sweet prawn, ikura (salmon roe), mackerel, kohada, and Hamachi toro. Pairing these fish with the Hakutsuru sake was quite a treat! Special thanks to our waiter and the manager, Bond, who went above and beyond to make our dining experience exceptional. Their knowledge of the menu and attention to detail to our needs made the evening even more special. They ensured that every detail was perfect and that we felt truly taken care of throughout the meal. We are immensely grateful to the chef for his incredible skills and for specially crafting this off-menu Omakase just for us. I want to address a deeply concerning experience I had at your restaurant, as I believe it warrants immediate attention. Despite having a reservation, we were not given reserved seating upon arrival. The service was extremely slow, which might have been understandable if the restaurant were busy, but this was not the case. When our udon was finally served, we were not provided with spoons, even after multiple requests, which made it cold by the time they brought them, which they did offer to heat up. The situation escalated when we received our bill and noticed two mochi ice creams had been added--items we neither ordered nor consumed. After pointing this out, the server returned with a corrected check but did so in an alarmingly aggressive manner, slamming it on the table so forcefully that it bounced. This behavior left my friend and I feeling extremely unsafe, prompting us to take the check directly to the register to expedite our departure. While I commend the chef for the excellent quality of the rainbow roll and nigiri, the overall service we experienced was unprofessional, unsettling, and completely unacceptable. I hope management takes this matter seriously and implements corrective measures to ensure no other guests are subjected to this kind of treatment. read more

Despite being first in line, I wasn't acknowledged by the hostess/waitress upon my arrival. After waiting for over 15 minutes, I had to inquire about our seating. I understand that she might have been handling multiple roles at once, but a simple greeting or acknowledgement goes a long way in making customers feel valued. Once seated, the service continued to disappoint. There was a noticeable absence of enthusiasm, warmth, and invitation that truly detracted from what could have been an enjoyable meal. On the bright side, the sushi itself was good, and the quality of the food met expectations. However, considering the restaurant charges an 18% gratuity, the minimum one would expect is a friendly smile and a welcoming attitude. Kimu Sushi is officially one of my new favorite sushi spots in Long Beach! The happy hour here is absolutely insane. We started with the salmon kama (which is salmon collar) , which was delicious! They give you two pieces for only $9.95! Such a great deal, especially because the collar was so flavorful and perfectly cooked. The special lobster popcorn roll was phenomenal and only $13.95. We also tried the salmon avocado and spicy tuna rolls, which were super fresh, refreshing, and paired really well with the $6.95 plum wine. The plum wine had the perfect amount of sweetness without being overwhelming. The atmosphere at Kimu is such a nice vibe--perfect for a casual dinner, catching up with friends, or just enjoying some really good sushi. The staff was incredibly attentive and sweet, which made the whole experience even better. A special shoutout to Sung for indulging in our silly conversations and making us feel so welcome. Best little sushi place in town. Good prices, quaint atmosphere, amazing service, everything you could ever ask for. For drinks we got sake and plum wine and were both impressed by the light nuances in flavor. for our meal we got King salmon and the Titanic roll. King salmon was delicious and the capers weren't too salty. Titanic role is one of the best i've ever had, highly recommend. We've been coming to this location prior to change over to Kimu. Kimu blows the old location out of the water with the decor and the ambience that it provides. The location aside.. the sushi here is amazing and it is one of my favorite places to go in Long Beach.
