I wanted to love this. I have been to a couple high end tasting dinners. This fell short for me. For the positive- service was outstanding, so was the ambiance. Really cool. The food was not. It just wasn't that great. I felt like for the $$$, it wasn't balanced enough. Serving rich, heavy dishes back to back, flavors didn't connect perfectly and wine pairing did not enhance food. I was sad it wasn't better. Glad I tried it, but will save the $ for another experience in Boise. The night ended with a beautiful jazz song sung a capela by a server. That was epic. read more

Each dish had locally foraged ingredients, complimenting a theme inspired by a local artist, whose work was displayed in the restaurant. First off, I want to say this. I was so upset by my experience at Kin that I knew I planned on writing about it when I got home, however I was surprised to find that the business has yet to have any comments about other customer experiences, so I created a listing for the business to have a future opportunity to prove me wrong. Covid made many businesses adjust to how they did business, and since they opened up in the middle of Boise being shut down, at home meal kits were a staple of kin, and instagram was a great way to find out about their rotating monthly menu options. A few of my acquaintances had tried and enjoyed the home kits, so when my friends said we were going to Kin for dinner, we were all pretty excited because of the hype that had been built up. Hype quickly became disappointment when we pulled up the menus to find that their physical location only offered appetizers under the "bar food" section. All the wonderful meals we had heard about were not available to the presently hungry patrons who arrived at a dinner hour. This could have been an oversight on our part if we had looked on their website, but the hype was real and we had believed it. We ordered our cocktails and I looked closer at the menu and found something I had never seen in another restaurant. "An optional 2.8% service charge to support employee health insurance and PPE will be added to every check." My friend asked, "Why do they say it's optional?" I responded with, "It's optional because you aren't required to pay it, but do you want to be the person that tells their server that you don't want them to have insurance, even when their employer should be providing it for them. By saying it's optional, it guilts you into doing the right thing so the owners aren't obligated to. It's the same thing as paying an Idaho minimum wage of $3.35 to servers and expecting your customers to pick up the other 80% of fair wages." I asked the server if they offered full meals, and instead of owning the restaurants decision to being more dedicated to cocktails and apps, he tried to give a longwinded explanation on how the owners have good relationships with the farmers so they want to support them with their menu, but he never actually said anything about not offering entrees, rather, he skated around the concept. It's perfectly fine to do cocktails and apps, just tell me and don't give me excuses to try and order a dozen apps so I can be full on overpriced small portions. By this point, our cocktails came, and to my surprise, my wife and I had the same drink, however hers showed up in a tom collins, and mine in a pint glass. This may seem like a minor thing, but consistency in a restaurant is huge for repeat business. If the glass sizes are different, the cocktail ingredient ratios aren't consistent, and you can't expect a repeat experience. This detail got me curious, so I looked at all of our plates, and realized they were all cheap mismatched dinnerware that looked like you can get at DI for .79. My friends said, "Maybe they want a mismatched vibe?" I responded, "Maybe they wanted to save every penny they could and wanted customers to front as much of the cost for a half hearted experience, but maybe it's just dishes that don't vibe." The check came (with the 2.8% already added) and I paid for the overpriced drinks and we left. Here is my takeaway. Three hours later, I ate somewhere else, but I'm still annoyed at how much of a lazy approach this was to dining. The dinnerware is an indication of the types of decisions the owners make to cut costs, the addition of the 2.8% is another indication that the owner is unwilling to provide his employees benefits from his earnings, the attitude I received from the server made me feel like I wasn't good enough for the restaurant, and the cost of drinks was ridiculous. The only reason I'm not giving a flat out 1 star is because my drink was decent, which you should expect out of a cocktail bar, but I have no idea if it will be good if I go back, and that's why I won't. If this is post-covid downtown Boise, I'm out. read more

This place has a good atmosphere and good drinks. However, if you are Active Duty or a dependent of one, I don't recommend that you come here. We provided our military IDs as a form of identification and the bartender took them back to someone that I am assuming is the manager. The manager came out with our IDs and asked immediately "if we had drivers licenses". We do, and I responded as such, but let him know that they're valid forms of identification. He sarcastically asked his colleague "what do you think?" And did not want to serve us based on our IDs. I asked him why he wouldn't accept our military IDs and he responded with "Are you being rude to me?" No, I'm not being rude. All I wanted to know is why my military ID wasn't valid. Anyway, he ended with the fact that the younger bartender could serve us if he wanted to, which he was polite enough to serve us. It seems like management needs to go back to the liquor commission and ask for an updated booklet since he was "never seen this form of ID" before. Living near Gowen Field and Mountain Home AFB I find this hard to believe. Good drinks, but won't be back any time soon. Horrible customer service. read more

We were smitten as soon as we came thru the doors. Great music, fab servers, delicious cocktails, great vibe in the lounge. The Sat tasting menu which followed was a feast for all senses. We went here last minute on a whim and I'm so glad we did! The cocktails were great! Strong with great flavor. The food was wonderful as well. My boyfriend got the hot noodz ramen and I got the fried chicken and mushrooms. Both were delicious. After eating we played a round of darts and had another cocktail. Came for "hatesgiving" menu and let me tell you.. hate is a little strong but it was very unpleasant. If you're going to be adventurous and gimmicky that's all well and good but in a tasting menu restaurant please make sure your food actually tastes good.. I actually liked most the ingredients it was just very poorly executed. Service was overall good but the manager was a bit pretentious and I don't really like to bump elbows with strangers sat next to me. I assume on a different night without the gimmicky shtick the food would be better... Regardless for a $100+ per person price point this was easily the worst meal I've ever had. Pretentious, neglectful staff. Heard so many good things about Kin's chef, so on a Thur, May 11, 2023, we thought we would try it. Did not have a rez. The host seemed uppity and almost gleeful informing us there was no way we could get in without a rez. We asked if there was bar seating with food, and indeed there was plenty of seating, which was fine with us. Our waiter came to the table with this weird dirty headband on, jeans falling off of him, and also a bit of an attitude. When asked if we wanted to order a drink, I explained my partner was using the restroom, and could he come back in a few minutes. He never graced our table again. Each time we called to him, he ignored us and seemed very busy talking and joking with staff and what seemed to be some of his friends coming in. We could not figure out, other than noodz, what was offered on the menu. If it was a changing menu, it would have been nice to get some guidance from the waiter. After about 20 minutes, and a nonbusy bar, we decided Kin wasn't worth rude staff, and total neglect. Maybe the food is good, but we will never know, because there are too many great restaurants in our fair city of Boise, to have staff treat us like we should be grateful we even walked in the door. My partner and I went to Art Haus Bar after a show, and the food was amazing! We got the fried chicken, hot noodz, and squash salad. All of which were delicious. The bar had beautiful cocktails and non alcoholic options too. The atmosphere was vibrant and the staff was friendly took great care of us. They even have darts! Kin hosted a wedding and dinner that was incredible. About 60 guests attended. The really amazing part was the 5 course meal the chef created. The chef spent time, seperately with the bride and groom to understand their favorite things to eat, and what they typically ate. With this information, he created each course to incorporate their individual tastes. Before each course was served, it was relayed what each of them liked, then explained the dish that he created for us. Some unique dishes, but every one of them were fabulous tasting. A new venture by the creative geniuses of State and Lemp and it shows. We came for after dinner drinks and were impressed by the attention to detail from the décor to the music and of course the perfectly balanced drinks. Everyone should feel welcome here--although the vibe is definitely cool and hip, it is not in the least pretentious or hipster. No over the top trying-too-hard speakeasy or clubby blow-your-eardrums out clubby atmosphere here. It almost feels like you are enjoying a nightcap in your neighbor's very cool yet cozy living room. It's just a totally different experience than other places we've frequented. I ordered the moron which was refreshing and delicious while my husband had two off-menu drinks created for him by our friendly and attentive bartender (I believe her name was Railli).
