Steven: responded very quickly and provided a fair quote for a Bradford White 40 gal low NOx water heater parts + labor based on my photos of the existing water heater setup. I also added afterwards to the quote a Corro-Protec powered anode and he provided a fair quote for that as well. I appreciated his quick and specific responses that made it very easy to work with King Kong plumbing...other plumber's quotes required an appointment for a site visit and some upselling when I only needed a simple straightforward replacement. 5/5 for this experience! Tyson: it quickly became apparent that he was very skilled, experienced, professional and efficient. He knew precisely what to do and quickly uninstalled the original water heater and cleanly prepped and installed the replacement water heater. He was very patient and explained things very clearly and offered preventative maintenance tips to extend the life of the water heater. Having the powered anode installed was great and reassuring so that I don't have to replace the sacrificial anode every year or so. Even though I probably could have installed the water heater myself (would have taken much longer and would have to source/purchase parts plus my labor lol), having him install it was awesome to observe...I even learned some pretty cool new techniques. He had all the right tools/parts and replaced the cold-water valve, flex lines, pressure relief valve drain line, and gas valve/fittings very cleanly and precisely. His finished installation looked and operated great! The entire experience took less than 2 hours from start to finish including haul away of the old unit. I'm a two-time customer thus far. Got to know the business and folks a bit. They are a family run business that I see familiar faces in both times, including Tyson and Vic. Price is on par with licensed contractors, but they work hard. First job, back in Nov of '24, we had a sewer back up. Many plumbers do not or cannot deal with such a scale, but KK was able to show up quickly. In previous experiences, plumbers that I work with don't want to jump down in the crawl space for previous issues and usually just poke their heads down. KK's "senior/lead" plumber lead was enthusiastic and jumped down to the crawl space without asking. I asked to come along and he and I crawled along. He had a good attitude and answered my questions around the crawlspace. He quickly found the old, non-PVC piping of the old house that likely caused the back up. I enjoyed the experience. The business owner, Steven, took care of most communications promptly. They do provide quote if the job requires pulling licenses and working with San Jose inspectors. When the first inspector nit-picked, they came back and fixed them. When there was rain, we asked them for additional tarp to cover the uncovered areas before inspection completed, they came quickly before the rain showed up. They also stick to their word. For a specific day's progress, when they run into issues with trenchless installation, they worked hard into the dark night to get the day's progress done. I respect that. They also found a few things around the house not up to code done by the previous owners and fixed them for me. The job was not cheap, but they did take care of us when hiccups occur and we appreciated that we could trust them to get things done right. Second job, recently, I asked them to install a water softener in a townhouse. I wasn't sure where the water main was. Other plumbers (unlicensed and cheaper) wasn't sure either and asked me to find out, but I couldn't. So, we went with KK given our previous experience. Vic, the guy who I crawled with before, knows his stuff. He walked around the townhouse, watched the layout, and through intuition opened up a part of the garage and found the main. I had a problem with my rental unit where the shower was leaking water to the garage downstairs. King Kong Plumbing was one of 3 plumbers I contacted to check on the issue and provide quotes. First problem, the crew that arrived couldn't speak much English, which was ok, but they looked at the bathroom for 10 seconds and said something like "$250 parts and labor". I kept asking him what the problem was and what was the proposed fix and all he said was "$250 parts and labor". So I said thanks and I will call back. The next day I called their office and someone else answered the call and I told him about the property and I asked for more clarification. Was the proposed fix was to change the spout or the outlet pipe from the wall because I could replace the spout myself but, if the outlet pipe was the problem, I could use their service. And the answer from the guy was "then you change it yourself!". He was very rude and even when I explained that's not what I meant, I just wanted clarification what exactly they are proposing to fix and what's included and he just said "I don't know". I asked if he could ask his crew who came to my property and he said "I'll try" and hung up. Needless to say, he never called me back. We hired King Kong a little while ago for a difficult project. They did a good job, so we decided to hire them again for a clogged drain. They offered to come the same day (Sunday), which was nice, but we were not available. I told them they could come the next day (Monday). However, they were confused and tried to come on Sunday anyway. They texted (which was good) and I was able to call the office and remind them that they were supposed to come on Monday between 3-4 pm. They said ok. Well, 4 pm comes and no one shows. I called the office, and no one answered. I tried 4 more times - always went to voicemail. They never called me back, and never said anything about why they didn't show. They just vanished. I had to scramble to find someone else to do the work. I have never experienced anything like that before. Completely unreliable, so they are now on our "do not call list." I cannot recommend them at all. They just wrote back to this review, and said I didn't reply to them. First, I called them to stop them from coming on Sunday, and THEY agreed AND confirmed they were coming on Monday 3-4 pm (see the image I posted).
