I see reviews are all over the place for Kips Bay Optical. I first came to Kips Bay for an eye exam by Kenneth Sherick in November 2017. I have a difficult set of eyes because of my astigmatism and poor vision, but Dr Sherick spent a lot of time with me, and nailed down a perfect prescription for me. He wasn't warm and fuzzy, but he was very professional and caring. For those of you who weren't a fan of his, Dr Sherick retired, and a new optometrist, Dr Samuel Choi is doing the exams now. Dr Sherick's son Adam is still at the shop, as is Brian Pekarsky, who has been there for a long time. Earlier this year I went to a fancy and expensive place on the Upper West Side where I live for an eye exam, and I paid a lot of money for glasses that did not work at all for me. I decided to make the trek to back to Kips Bay Optical a few weeks ago, and had a great exam with Dr Choi. I had the lenses made using my old frames, and I really appreciated that I was never pressured to buy new frames, or buy more expensive lenses than needed for my prescription. The cost was very reasonable, and everyone was very kind and professional. I don't need extra stroking and a free cappuccino when I get my glasses, I just want good quality work, honesty, and reasonable prices. I got them all at Kips Bay, and I will be sure to come back next year when I need a new prescription. Well worth the inconvenient location for me to have perfect vision. read more

Accidentally sat on my glasses the day I had to leave for a long international trip. Walked into Kips Bay Optical, and they were able to temporarily fix a pair of ic! berlin specialty glasses that not many places in the city even carry let alone can fix. Great place with great people. Will come back for general eye care needs. read more

Wow, I guess all of these 5-star reviewers must have been paid off. My experience with the 3 men who work here (Dr. Sherick, his son Adam, and the employee Brian) was nothing but obnoxious rudeness and incompetence. One day, I was standing patiently waiting for Adam to adjust something on my glasses, when Dr. Sherick came out of his office, walked directly toward me, and started yelling at me about something. Huh? I was startled and asked him what he was talking about. He grinned sarcastically and kept yelling at me. And then his son said to him, "No that's not her." Oh. So he muttered something and walked away. No apology from anyone. I was very taken aback but figured it was a fluke. I bought glasses with Rx lenses and when I picked them up, the frame was cracked. I had to point it out. So they ordered new ones, I had to wait weeks for them and when I picked them up, I noticed another crack in these frames. Again, I had to point it out (they either never checked them or they were well aware of it and figured I wouldn't see it) (I think it was the latter). They claimed that it wasn't a crack but an irregularity in the frame. Subsequently, I realized it was definitely a crack. I brought them back and they accused ME of having broken them and refused to fix them. Brian, who was usually kind of quiet, became very obnoxious with me and gave me a really hard time. He insisted that THEY were not responsible for this. A friend of mine had also gone to them for contact lenses. She said that Dr. Sherick insisted that he knew more about contact lenses than "anyone else in the city, including ophthalmologists" (I'd heard him say something similar). She said he was very bossy and pushy with her and never got her Rx right. Eventually, she gave up and went somewhere else that did a great job. I never went back. I found another optician in the city that I love and I have continued to go to them. I hope Kips Bay Optical goes out of business. read more

Hands down the best optometrist in New York City. Dr. Scherick is patient, kind, and has an amazing "bed-side" manner. I've only been going here for a year, but I have to say, it's the best optometrist office I've been to in a long time. I highly recommend Kips Bay Optical. read more

I came here mainly because my insurance considered Dr. Sherick a preferred provider. I was a little hesitant at first seeing all of the 5 star reviews (thinking maybe he's offering incentives for good reviews). However, my first visit was fantastic. We started the exam right on time. Dr.Sherick explained everything as he went, and even told me about the new equipment they use in his office. I didn't feel rushed in the exam, nor did he make me feel uncomfortable at any appointment. Have I mentioned how clean the office was?! In my personal opinion, I think a lot of health professionals have terrible bedside manner, but Dr.Sherick was great. I highly recommend him. Thanks Kips Bay Optical! read more

We went in just to get a pair of glasses repaired. They were super nice and fast.

Highly recommended. Came here because I needed an appointment to renew my NYS driver's license, which is expiring soon. Literally made an appointment less than a week in advance, walked in and was done within 10mins. Super efficient - you're given a quick eye exam, and the shop will electronically submit your vision test results to the DMV, which was uploaded within an hour or so (for me). $25 flat fee, no insurance required. read more

This office is by far the most unprofessional place I have ever been. I wish I could give negative stars!! They gave me the wrong prescription and then wouldn't let me return the contacts or re-examine me. I had to wait a year because my insurance wouldnt pay for another eye exam somewhere else and so I had trouble seeing for a whole year because this place messed up. Everyone in this office is extremely rude. Don't trust them. Do yourself a favor and go to ANY other optometrist in the area because this office is the worst in town!!! read more

After living in the area for four years I finally stopped in kips bay optical. I needed a dmv license renewal check which the place can do for you online but also wanted a comprehensive eye exam. The doc was great!! He was so friendly and kind and really made my appt enjoyable. This was my first eye exam at an eye doctor after my lasik 2 years and he made sure to check everything, discussed my concerns, and offered some eye drop samples. The dmv portion was free since I got the exam and it made license renewal painless (since no trip to the DMV was needed!). If you need an eye doc, eye exam, or glasses I really recommend kips bay optical! read more

I needed a renewed contact lenses prescription and picked Kips Bay Optical because it is near my apartment/office, accepted my Vision Plan, and had good Yelp reviews. Yelp really does help because I made the mistake of not checking my previous optometrist and saw afterwards that many others had a horrible experience like mine. I made the appointment via Zocdoc and Dr. Scherick sent me confirmation e-mails/texts and reminders. Since I filled out my personal and insurance information online, I checked in very quickly. The guy at the front desk seemed very knowledgeable and clearly described my insurance's payment plan. I've had horrible experiences in the past where the receptionists would explain to me afterwards something different than what was on my plan and made me call my insurance company because they either didn't know about my insurance plan or wanted to charge more because of some OD/MD difference. I was so relieved that KBO had outlined the exact charges I expected beforehand. I only waited a few minutes to see Dr. Scherick. He is a friendly, thorough, and thoughtful optometrist who actually listens. His office has several options for contacts and was able to explain the difference in usage and cost very easily. He also told me a lot about his daughter, who he is very proud of. Checkout was very clean and easy. Will definitely be coming back to renew my contact lenses prescription in the future! read more

Just had a great first time experience here. I went in already with a prescription and wanting to buy a pair of glasses with my insurance allowance and not going above it in price. The worker (Adam?) went through my insurance allowances and pointed me to the frames in my budget. He didn't try pushing anything more expensive which was very nice. There was also a little issue with my insurance since another glasses store I went to beforehand had a hold on my claim, even though I didn't buy anything from them. I have been going to Kips Bay Optical for 6+ years. Throughout that time, Dr. Sherick has always been incredibly welcoming while still being efficient: Knowing most of us are coming before work or during our lunch break. Every time I've seen him he has always been incredibly knowledgeable, professional and a truly great Optometrist. While I haven't been in their new location yet, his office is always very bright and nice and he clearly keeps up to date with the latest equipment and exam services. He is also quick to recommend trusted specialists if he has any concerns that are outside his area of expertise. Most recently, he and his staff went above and beyond for me when I needed to have my latest eye exam results submitted to the DMV so I could renew online. I am out of the country for the next 10 months and they were quick to respond via email and handle sending in my latest eye exam. This is saving me a lot of time and anxiety. I have a really positive experience here. I went in to get a new prescription, since my current one was very out-of-date, and a new pair of glasses. The doctor did an awesome job of taking his time to find the correction prescription for me. He first determined the prescription on his own, and only after compared it with my old glasses, in order not to bias his judgement. My left eye is weaker than my right, but my old prescription overcompensated for this. The doctor demonstrated this to me by having me wear my old glasses, and putting a lens in front to adjust the prescription. Sure enough, it was apparent that images were less crisp with my old prescription. I really appreciated him taking the time to demonstrate this to me. The rest of the staff was friendly, as well. I took awhile to pick out my frames, but never felt rushed. My glasses were ready in about a week. Received both an email and text message when they were ready for pick up, which I appreciated. read more

Got a good solid eye exam, the Doc realized my old glasses were way too strong and gave the first realistic prescription I think I've had. Gave me a bunch of sample contacts to try out as well. Lens prices weren't the best ($175 for nonglare coating seems high to me) but overall an excellent experience. read more

Honest. Friendly. Great options. Fast. I was losing my insurance and rushed into here to use my benefit. I was just so impressed with how professional, honest and helpful these folks were. I have always had the experience with optical places that they constantly try to upsell you. It's the weirdest thing that glasses, even with insurance, can cost hundreds of dollars. These guys quickly looked up what was covered under my insurance, showed me which glasses were covered 100%, and got me those glasses by the next week. I always like to take the time to review a business that cares about its customers and provides a great experience. This is excellent service. I not only received a detailed and informative evaluation, but a very clear description of the products available (contact lenses specifically for me) after my exam. Dr Scherick walked me through the details of where my eyes are currently, and what that means for me. To follow that up, they went over my insurance coverage with me and mapped out exactly what would be covered. They also took the time to show me how to maximize my benefits, and gave me the information I needed to make an informed decision. Dr. Scherrick was very patient with me and he didn't rush me to pick a lens. He suggested I try multiple lenses before deciding on what felt right for me. He isn't talkative, but that is just his personality type. He is definitely not rude or anything. I think the other people who wrote the negative reviews about him have a big problem themselves. I've been seeing Dr. Scherick for at least 25 years and have recommended him to friends who also continue to see him. I'm primarlily a contact lens wearers. Dr. Scherick has always been very thorough with my exams and always takes the extra time to explain the various contact lens options, such as new multifocal lens designs or new suface treatments to lenses that allow me to me to wear them comfortably all day long. I always am very pleased with the results--namely excellent vision. The office is very well equipped with the latest technology--automated email recalls for my annual exam, the ability to make appointments online, even automated appointment confirmations. The office also uses a VisiOffice electronic fitting system to ensure that my progressive lenses for my eyeglasses are customized to my particulars. It tells me that Dr. Scherick is keeping up with the times and with the new technologies that are being introduced. Although I lived in a different neighborhood I happily walked over to Kips Bay to purchase my optical items. Dr Scherik makes his shop feel like you are in small town USA with his kindness and sense of humor.
