Kirkwood had been on my list since opening, and it did not disappoint. We had a reservation for six and were promptly seated in one of the dining areas featuring a beautiful circular bar and adjoining lounge space. The entire restaurant is gorgeous. Chic, classy, cozy, and intimate with different spaces throughout. Great for a date night, group dinner, or even just drinks to start the night. I had the Petal Pusher Pour-Over, French onion soup, and steak frites. Everything was delicious, and our waitress was knowledgeable and attentive. I also loved the thoughtful touches, like choosing our own steak knives and receiving little keychains to exchange for our bagged leftovers on the way out. I was excited to hear the news that Mac Haik had opened an upscale new American restaurant in the Energy Corridor. My wife and I's anniversary was coming up so we booked a reservation to check out the new spot in order to celebrate. Long before he became synonymous with car dealerships, Mac Haik was famous for his football career, first at Ole Miss, and then as wide receiver for the Houston Oilers. Much of the restaurant's design and decor reflects Mac's personal history. The moment you walk in and are greeted by the hostess, if you look up, you'll see a beautiful rendition of the Astrodome's famous domed ceiling hovering above you. When you walk through the hallways, they're lined with countless photographs and keepsakes from Mac's college and NFL football days. Even the restaurant's symbol, a magnolia, is a reference to his home state of Mississippi. The dining area boasts lounge seating for drinks, a long wrap around bar top, open kitchen, and countless leather and copper wrapped booths for an intimate dining experience. Long story short, it's a beautiful restaurant, that does an excellent job celebrating one of Houston's adopted sons. Unfortunately, the service and even the food didn't match the wow factor of the buildout and decor... The entire evening's service was just a mess. Our waitress greeted us and took our cocktail and appetizer orders, brought everything out to us, and then disappeared for what felt like 30 minutes. Our cocktails were empty, appetizers eaten, and we were ready to order more food, but we couldn't find a server to save us. The waitress eventually reemerged, took our entree orders, and we asked for the wine list so we could order a bottle with our dinner. She left to go get that wine list, and again disappeared on us. Our entrees arrived, but still no wine list, so we went back to craning our necks trying to wave down anyone to help us. We got the attention of another waiter, who then got our waitress and we got that wine order in to pair with our now not so hot meal. Finally, after eating our entrees and enjoying the wine, my wife left for the bathroom and the waitress thought that was the best time to bring out our "Happy Anniversary" dessert, while she wasn't at the table... When we finished the dessert, the waitress swooped in with the bill and didn't ask if we wanted after dinner drinks, coffee, or joke about another dessert. The whole interaction start to finish was just sloppy. It felt like the staff wasn't trained for fine dining whatsoever. We started with the tuna tartare, and for mains, I had one of the specials which was grilled grouper, and my wife ordered the steak frites. All dishes were fine and executed correctly, but there wasn't really any standout bites. Everything was fairly meh. The menu overall plays it safe offering old standards and very little in the way of noteworthy or innovative dishes. Beautiful restaurant, but not quite the touchdown we were rooting for. (couldn't help myself) Don't throw the place out on one review from one visit though. Maybe they're much better suited for a business lunch, or happy hour before leaving the office for home. I went there for lunch because it was close to my workplace and it's a really nice, upper scale establishment. They require reservation and they also have a waiting seating area. The interior is modern elegant with a lot of natural light and wooden accents. Physically, it's very beautiful and aesthetic inside. They have around maybe 50 to 60 people worth of seating both booths and tables. They have a pretty comprehensive menu. With a lot of different options with wrapped sandwiches, etc. I think it's a very varied menu so everyone in your party has options. I didn't try the cocktails, but they also have a lot on the menu. The table comes with the basket of bread. I ordered the avocado club and it came with a side of fries. The side of fries were very delicious and it was a good amount for the order. The size of the sandwich itself also was enough for lunch and leftovers for the next day. The presentation, the food was very elegant and it was overall very good sandwich. Service was a little on the slower side. But the waiter was very attentive. They give you the option also to pay by digital with a QR code on the receipt. However, the QR code was not working for me so I had to wait for the waiter to physically take my card. They pack the takeout for you and they also bring it to the front for you to take when you leave, which I've never had happened before. I will warn that the day that I went, the restaurant was packed for lunch so I would either get there early or make a reservation. read more

I love this place. The owner which is Mac Haik who played for the oilers and owns some dealerships in the city set the tone with fine dining. The decor gave a modern old Hollywood glam vibe. I was just in awe touring this restaurant. He paid homage to his mother and wife by naming rooms in their honor. They offer valet parking for a fee as well as free parking in a nearby parking garage. The customer service was top tier. The food was amazing. They offer free rolls which came straight out of the oven. They were soft and pillowy. The butter that came with it was different but good. I am not sure what it was. We came during Houston Restaurant Weeks. On the lunch menu I ordered the jumbo shrimp cocktail and the chicken under a brink. The only things they need to change is they didn't devein the shrimp very well. Also, the chicken needed a little bit of more seasoning. For the desert I ordered the caramelized banana sundae. This place was an amazing experience from entry to exit. The staff was so kind and personable, the interior decor was beautiful, and that day in particular, was the first day they had live music playing. It was a wonderful experience. I came here after my birthday to celebrate with a close friend and our waiter definitely made the experience worth it. The food and drinks were 10/10 and the service was a 12/10. I hate leaving negative reviews, but unfortunately the food was mediocre and the service was disappointing. I came here to celebrate my friend's birthday and was truly underwhelmed by the experience. Our server seemed largely inattentive and rarely checked on our table throughout the evening. To make matters worse, the USA soccer game was on, making the restaurant extremely loud and not ideal for a special occasion. The complimentary bread service was the highlight of the meal--the sun-dried tomato butter was phenomenal. However, my steak frites was overly salty and fell short of expectations. What was most frustrating was the birthday dessert situation. I specifically asked our server if my friend would receive a complimentary birthday treat, and he said yes. Later, he apologized for forgetting, but then proceeded to charge her for the crème brûlée. Had we known it wasn't complimentary, she would have chosen a different dessert instead of the one he suggested. Aside from the beautiful atmosphere, there wasn't much that stood out positively. Highly Recommend! We live in the neighborhood and it's awesome to finally have a nice place to go to for cocktails and good food. This area really needed something like this. Great service and the restaurant was very nice and organized with good ambiance. We sat at the bar and watched some of the game with our meal. Service was excellent. Staff were very nice and helpful. Food was excellent. Everything we had was fresh. We had the short Rib with mash potatoes and it was excellent. The Cesar salad is very good as well and you can tell it's fresh and not dressing out of a bottle. They have a "sun room" in the back with a bar and that room is very nice. The experience at Kirkwood's was nothing short of humiliating. Before my girl even reached the table, the hostess chased her down and told her she had to wear a shawl because her outfit was supposedly "too revealing." She was wearing a tasteful blue halter top, long pants, and zero cleavage showing. There was nothing vulgar, inappropriate, or excessive about her outfit that justified being publicly singled out and embarrassed. What was even more concerning was that after looking around the restaurant, it was clear that other patrons were wearing short and significantly more revealing clothing, yet no one else was asked to cover up and there were no other shawls in sight. A quick look through Kirkwood's own online photos further reinforces this concern, showing guests wearing outfits that were far more revealing than what my girl was wearing. This made the situation feel less like a dress code being enforced and more like my girl was personally targeted a quick glance around the dining room confirmed that. She holds a medical doctorate degree, carries herself with professionalism and class, and deserved to be treated with the same respect as any other guest. The way she was singled out left her feeling that she had experienced racial discrimination. Her family immigrated to the United States to escape discrimination and to build a life in a country that represents freedom and equal treatment. To have an experience that made her feel judged, targeted, and unwelcome because of who she is was deeply upsetting. If Kirkwood's has a dress code, it should be clearly communicated and applied consistently to every guest not selectively based on one employee's personal opinion. A restaurant should make guests feel welcomed, not embarrassed or singled out. I also have to mention that the food did not justify the experience. Aside from the ragu, the meal was disappointing. The hamachi tasted old, the drinks were bland, and the Brussels sprouts were burnt. I expect management to reach out regarding this incident and take appropriate action, including proper training for their staff on how to handle situations like this with professionalism, consistency, and respect. No guest should leave a restaurant feeling humiliated or questioning whether they were treated differently because of their race or appearance. Failure to do so will only result in local media becoming aware. I hope management takes this seriously and ensures that no other guest has to experience something similar. read more

Had to update my review, since I came here and had a better experience! On my second visit, I was a little more familiar with the restaurant, and probably ordered things more to my taste. This time, I enjoyed an espresso martini with the truffle parmesan ravioli, and it was delicious! The espresso martini is so cute, and the extra portion comes in a little carafe. I also had the chicken on a brick this time, with mashed potatoes instead of the fingerling potatoes, and we tried the spinach artichoke dip and the charred broccolini. The chicken on a brick was good, and I actually really enjoyed the charred broccolini. The spinach and artichoke dip was good but a little too cheesy for me, there was so little actual spinach and artichoke. Still good, just not my favorite and I'd probably order the cacio e pepe frittatini again over it. The service was also great. While during my last visit I felt that the staff was being a little too accommodating and efficient, there was a better pace during this visit and I didn't feel rushed to finish my dining experience. We went to dinner to celebrate the birthdays of two of our friends. It's only been open since April so not a big menu! Very relaxing atmosphere! The short rib ragu was yummy and pasta was al dente. The ravioli was tasty! Now the Berry Hibiscus Fizz needs more fizz to really bring the drink together! My favorite thing was the dessert the Creme brulee was smooth and very nice mouth feel! Recent visit to Kirkwood turn out to be a great new restaurant by Mac Haik Enterprises on the ground floor of one of his office buildings. The Sesame Ahi Tuna was seared perfectly and was the outstanding dish of the evening. Little Gem Caesar was a nice twist on an old classic and the second best dish. French Dip was "good" but not as good as the old Houston's or Lorenzo's. The Steak Frites was a nice piece of flap steak cooked medium rare which was tender and had a great flavor. Definitely a spot to put on your dining out list, it's going onto our "go list" for sure. read more

The hostess is welcoming as well as the ambiance of the restaurant once you open the copper doors. I like the corner living room section upon walking into the main dining hall. This place is a welcome addition to the west side of town, especially for us quality starved Katy residents. As soon as you valet, you're greeted by a pair of gigantic doors (that you won't have to open yourself) and a friendly host stand. Once seated, the bar menu has great variety and we decided to try everything we could that sounded summery. The spritz, both margaritas, and the martini were all major hits, cheers to the bartenders for that. Food-wise, we started with the cacio frittatinis or whatever they call those. Basically a twist on arancini with a vodka dipping sauce, both of which were delightful. We also had the tuna app which was fresh and delicious. My wife and I split the ravioli and the arugula and apple salad. Highly recommend both, each were prepped with high quality, complimentary ingredients and seemed well thought out. Service was also stellar, drinks and food were fetched with haste and the table stayed pre-bussed the entire evening. Overall would absolutely recommend coming here. Or don't, more tables for me. The restaurant is beautiful but very noisy. The staff is extremely helpful. The chef needs to be fired. The food is non-edible. The onion soup has no broth and loaded with sugar. The prime rib sandwich was tasteless. The artichoke spinach dip did not contain artichokes or spinach...only cheese. It came to the table cold when it should have been hot. The rolls were stale. Been anxious to try this relatively new upscale restaurant near home. Made reservations for four, Friday at 6:15. Arrived on time and seated promptly in a quieter side room. The whole restaurant and bar was full and lively. Our server - Filipe - was prompt to the table and was excellent all evening. The rest of the floor staff was also on point. The previous reviewers issues with service seemed to have been addressed, although the reception was a little disjointed. Three of the four ordered from the HRW menu. Entrees were the fish (excellent), short rib and the ragu (both forgettable). The shrimp cocktail had five extra large shrimp (excellent ) with both a spicy cocktail sauce (excellent) and a white remoulade sauce (just ok). The Little Gem Caesar was very good. The non-HRW entree was the truffle ravioli - excellent and a generous serving. The three HRW desserts, crème brûlée, key lime coupe and chocolate tart were all excellent. Side note - the French onion soup starter was requested , but Filipe was honest and recommended otherwise, as several tables had sent it back. Overall a very good meal with excellent service but an uneven kitchen. Will return. Notes: Valet in the front and garage parking directly behind the building with an easy, well marked walk to a second entrance into reception. The dish presentation was not good, a huge amount of fries, the steak cut in pieces, but they could have reduced the amount of fries and include some tomato slices to give the dish a more classy look. Presentation was what i would expect at a fast food restaurant. The margarita was good. The selection of wines OK. I understand this is a new restaurant, but they really have some "chef" issues to iron out. There were five of us in our dinner party- ambiance is nice, but noisy, service was good, but quality of the food was really lacking. Two our party had grouper that was so tough you had to cut it with a knife. That's not how fish should be served. One of us had the double pork chop - again it was over-cooked and tough. Pricing is not out of line for a nice restaurant, and given the fact that they're new, we're willing to give them a second chance, but unless the kitchen can get their act together and improve their food quality, this place may not be around for too long. read more

From the moment valet opens your door, being greeted by the hosts, entire dining experience is exemplary. This is a warm, sophisticated and beautiful restaurant this area needed. My companion and I had a fun cocktail, the ahi tuna salad that was so delicious! Our entree was the filet mignon that was enough for 2 people and cooked to perfection. Our server Tiffany was a good guide and source in making recommendations for our lunch. She was assisted by food runners and others that made sure all our needs were being met without being annoying. I went in for lunch and ordered the Steak Frites. It was delicious and perfectly cooked and the peppercorn cream sauce was very flavorful. They subbed my fries for the brussels sprouts which were absolutely delicous! Our waiter was very attentive and invited us to look around the rest of the dining room. When we came back, they had artfully refolded our napkins for us and it made me giggle. Man where do I start with this place, it was the perfect place to go for my anniversary. It was breathtaking from the food to the drinks and the service. The inside is really beautiful aswell, they have a cute little booth setup with some tvs to watch the World Cup. My friends and I both had a salad and it was delicious. However, our experience at dinner with two other couples left a lot to be desired. The food was good. The steak could be seasoned a little bit more, but overall the steaks and a pork chop were both enjoyed by our party of six. Service was an entirely unenjoyable experience. Our waiter tried to upsell us at every opportunity which everyone noticed and was a huge turnoff. He even scoffed at my wine selection suggesting a much more expensive one. Speaking of, cocktails were great but our wine was ordered well before the food arrived and we got it halfway through our meal. They definitely need more bartenders or a sommeliers. Being a native Houstonian and a girl who'd always be at the Oiler games with her parents back in the day, I appreciated the nostalgic look of the owner's (former Oiler) memorabilia and Astrodome throwback. Service was very attentive, the huge biscuit rolls offered were warm, soft. We had the beef carpaccio which was delightfully delicious and savory. Also the cacio and pepe frittatini- perfectly crisp. My steak frites cooked just right and mild peppercorn sauce. Great portions. Brussels sprouts were tasty, but were just shavings, not the entire sprout, which I missed. My husband's was the best! Fall off the bone short rib! Must get! I absolutely loved the table cart service for their chateaubriand- very old school, but beautiful. We didn't get to try, but will be back for it- it serves 2/3 people. The only thing I wish is they would offer more menu selections- more than just standard steaks, sandwiches. Maybe more elevated selections? Dover Sole? Soft shell crab? Truffle pasta? Either way, worth a try. Good food and atmosphere. Great for west Houston's dining scene. read more
