First place I went to in Oakland and I loved it!! We came at 10am on a Monday. It was busy inside so we sat outside but they had heaters to keep us warm. The iced cinnamon latte was tasty and had a huge cinnamon stick on top of it. We had the Kalbi omurice which had a delicious gravy. Also had the Korean fried chicken and waffles which were also yummy. They have lots of Asian fusion dishes. Would recommend to anyone looking for somewhere outside the typical brunch experience. read more

This is a 5-star review that was almost a 2-star review before the staff at Kitchen Story came through. My party of two was seated at the bar, and then we waited 50 minutes for our food to come out on a busy Saturday afternoon. Tables seated after us were getting their food served before we were, so we checked in a few times and were pretty unhappy at the 35 minute mark. By 45 minutes, we were wondering if we should just walk out. The staff ended up offered us some concessions, apologized several times, and basically didn't make us feel like a-holes for being unhappy about the long wait time to receive our food. We went to Kitchen Story for brunch and we had a great experience! They have a lot of outdoor seating during quarantine and social distancing measures in place. We joined the waitlist when we arrived via an iPad through Yelp, but you can join through the Yelp app before you arrive too. We waited for about 10-12 minutes, shorter than our expected 15-20 minutes, before we were seated. My fiancé and I both ordered the bottomless mimosas to drink and they were delicious! We tried the peach, strawberry lemonade, and grapefruit flavors. They give you about an hour to enjoy the bottomless mimosas. For food, I ordered the Country Benedict and my fiancé ordered the KFC and waffles. Both of our dishes were absolutely incredible! The chicken was perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The sauces and hollandaise paired well with the fried chicken. The benedict came with roasted potatoes with rosemary - yum! The KFC and waffles were scrumptious according to my fiancé. It came with fried cauliflower on the side and I'm pretty sure that's the only time I've heard him same he loved a vegetable. Haha! The hostess and our waitress were both super friendly and nice. They made our experience that much better. This is a great spot for a nice brunch. It's a little expensive but it's worth what you pay. Wow! I got the burger with millionaire bacon, and my wife got a tasty noodle dish. We got the popcorn chicken and waffle bits for an appetizer and WOW it has actual popcorn and was delicious! The burger went by a bit quickly but I think it was because it was simply quite excellent and I was hungry. It was just the right size and we left comfortably full not over stuffed. The wait staff was kind and the seating was cozy but not cramped. My only regret was that we couldn't enjoy more menu items; we'll need to come back soon! read more

I was hungry and I always wanted to try this spot but the weekend brunch crowd be having the line down the street almost. It was Tuesday so definitely not that busy. I live in Clovis,CA and found this restaurant as being dog friendly. We were celebrating both my birthday and my dogs 16th for brunch here. The heaters above the tables outside is wonderful. It was a party of 6 for us and we each had something different to eat. I ordered the French toast and the portion sizes are large, so I didn't get to finish it; but it was amazing! The matcha drinks were incredible and everyone seemed to love the food and service. I ordered the bacon flight for my son and my dad to try, my son loved the original. Street parking across from the restaurant wasn't too bad. There is residential parking nearby if it gets too crowded. Stopped by early afternoon on Thursday and was seated right away. Service was great and food came out relatively quickly! The waiters were very attentive and continuously checked on us. As for the food, the Blackstone Benedict is one of my favorites on the menu. A decadent mashup of sweet and smoky caramelized bacon, perfectly roasted potatoes, and two poached eggs. It's everything that I could want in a breakfast as a person with a savory tooth! My friend got the Soufflegg Skillet (Piggy), and while the presentation was beautiful, the inside of the steamed egg was very runny. Possible that too much water was added to the egg mixture. I wanted to like this place....I really did- but in 3 visits I've found the food to be very underwhelming and not that tasty. The sailors scramble was largely flavorless and very expensive. My boyfriend did enjoy his breakfast tacos and I thought the potatoes were cooked and seasoned well. They were honestly the best thing I've tried here besides some of the drinks. We did love the drinks. They have this mind blowing coconut latte that is absolutely delish and the lychee iced tea is also super yummy. The millionaire's bacon was pretty good but too spicy for me. On my next visit I tried the mascarpone stuffed fried French toast and it was just too much food, too rich and not really that tasty. The hard bits on the outside edges were also strange. Not what you think about when you imagine French toast. This final visit I decided maybe I need to try the more Asian inspired dishes. Perhaps that's where they shine? But I was again underwhelmed by my choice of the open face brunch special which was a mound of under seasoned rice with what was a good assortment of veggies, but were cooked almost up the point of being slimy. Excited Kitchen Story made it to the east bay. I never made it to SF's location due to it's long line on the weekends but figured Oakland is reasonable. Located in the Claremont area among the hippest restaurants along the block. Since there are no reservations over the weekend, decided to come in at 10am. Perfect call out with a 5min wait. Upon the menu, Asian influences with their own twist. What caught my eye was their KFC with waffles and adobo syrup. My brunch crew decided to order the same thing except one which picked the crab omelet and for table sharing we ordered the french toast mascarpone. Breakfast drink treat: espresso martini with vodka. Yummy The KFC fell on the dry side, but with their specialty syrup made it better. The French toast mascarpone was delish. The crab omelet was a pleaser. I would like to note the customer services during the time of paying the bill. We explained to our waitress how we would like to pay, her expression was dry and walked away which was rude. Please put a smile on your face and say great I can do that for you. SMH. I came with high hopes to Kitchen Story but left a tiny bit disappointed. I felt like the quality of the food didn't reflect the price point but I guess you could say you're also paying for their brand and the ambience. Interior is really cute and well done. Has a fun brunchy vibe if you know what I mean. Menu is full of fun options including the Jjapaguri - a dish featured in the infamous and award winning 2019 Korean movie - Parasite. Most disappointing was the salmon yuzu Benedict. The dish came out room temperature/cold - even the eggs! The bread and the salmon was just plain cold and everything else was like room temperature. I asked the server if this is supposed to be a cold dish but he said the eggs should be hot so I guess it was just sitting out before coming to our table. It was a busy morning (full house with a wait list) so I can see that happening. Omurice was also nothing special. Disappointed with how tiny the galbi (korean marinated beef) pieces were and it was something that could be easily created at home. Ordered the Frisco Benedict with chicken mango sausage for $19; it's more of a chicken patty than sausage bits but still yummy. Very filling with the Yukon potatoes, would like a little bit more flavor in the hollandaise. TIP: get on the waitlist 1 hour before for brunch on weekends because they are very busy. Close to by a bookstore and dive bar if you want to hang out with friends beforehand. Sometimes the waitlist isn't open on weekends as well so would take that into account. read more

Okay Kitchen Story, I see you and all the hype that follows. I've heard many things about Kitchen Story in San Francisco, and was excited to try their menu at their Oakland location. It's located on College street, and you'll have to find street parking nearby. It looks cute inside, but it's not a very big restaurant so I can see why the waitlist can take sometime. They take afternoon reservations on Monday through Friday, while only evening reservations on the weekends. I would highly recommend making a reservation because it ensures you less of a wait. I came on a Friday at 11:30 AM and there were a few tables open. I tried the galbi omurice because this is the dish that simply everyone raves about. It's a pretty thing, and worth taking a picture of since the egg is so delicately swirled. This was delicious. There were tenders pieces of galbi (meat), and plenty of different veggies. I loved how perfectly seasoned this entire dish was. When I thought there wasn't enough sauce, the sea of sauce it sits in would kick in and provide the extra saltiness that it needed. The rice is soft and fragrant, and I love the use of mushrooms. The egg is as delicate as it looks and a beautiful skin over it's precious contents. Because the millionaire's bacon here is so hyped too, I knew I had to try it in some way, shape, or form. I opted to get the Millionaire BLT so I could have a more hearty meal + try the bacon. The bacon is thick, smokey, and sweet. I found it to be on the sweeter side than it's other flavorings. It is delicious stuff - probably the best bacon that I've ever had. The aioli that is spread on the cibatta adds more flavor and depth to the sandwich since it simply is millionaire bacon + tomato + lettuce/sprouts. The menu says it comes with a side of extra crispy potato wedges, but I was disappointed that they weren't really "extra crispy." I would say they were crisp, but they didn't live up to their actual name. They were pretty standard in my opinion. I did enjoy the bit of fruit on the side to cleanse my palette with some sweetness at the end. Service was attentive. Water was filled. And it didn't take long to get the check and be on your merry way. I would recommend this place and would certainly visit again if in the area and with a reservation. read more

So what is the point of a reservation if you are just going to put me at bar seating? My experience here was not the greatest though I wanted to love this place so much. I made a reservation for a Tuesday at noon for lunch for two. This reservation was made via yelp two weeks before the date. It was easy to make the reservations via the app and you even get a reminder email the day before. We walked in and informed them that we had a reservation. She showed me a list and pointed at my name which I confirmed. (this list had no more names on it for reservations, there were three others that were before us- how I know is that their names were crossed out and we were last) We asked for a booth and she told me it was going to be awhile. She showed me a table and while walking to it, apparently there is another secret entrance because next thing we know, another person was walking two people to it and sat them at the table. Again, what is the purpose of reservations? This visit already started off on the wrong foot. If it wasn't for it being my actual birthday, we may just have walked out. We were sat at the bar. The restaurant is quaint and clean. After we placed our order, a booth opened up and instead of it being offered to us, a person next sitting to us, just left the bar and sat in it. SMH, I can't get over the point of reservations here. I ordered the KFC & waffles and it came out fancy looking, which is what the gram is for. Needless to say, I really liked it. I love the touch of sliced fruit (grapes, strawberries and some blueberries) and also the fried cauliflower- super good! The sauce is sweet, I wish it had a bit more of a kick to it, but it wasn't necessary. The waffles were not dry and perfect sized. The ratio - chicken to waffles- were spot on. If it wasn't for the way our visit started, I would have given this place a 5. The food is delicious! Went for brunch and it was okay. The highlight was the Arnold Palmer for sure! I would not recommend the Jjagappori thing. It was fine but definitely not what I was expecting (something that packed more of a punch). The eggs Benedict were really good per the wife and so was her lemony pancake but I can't understand the notion of putting citrus in pancakes so I skipped over that. The Prosecco on the menu took forever to come and was very average for the price. Espresso was very bitter. I've tried kitchen story for dinner in SF, so when I saw it recently opened in oakland, I knew I had to come here for brunch--I mean, just read the menu. Everything sounds so good. My bf and I came here on a Sunday around 11, put our name down and waited about 35 minutes for a table. Like some reviews mention, the tables are close to each other and you hear every conversation. Our server took our drink and food order pretty quickly. I got the deep fried French toast, and while I asked to add eggs and millionaires bacon, he thought I wanted the two egg breakfast, which comes with toast, potatoes, and fruit. I didn't realize the mistake until later, but I definitely did not want all that food, so I'm knocking off a star for him getting my order wrong (which resulted in only a $6 difference but it's already an expensive brunch!). The French toast and bacon were amazing. My bf's omurice was good but I thought there could've been more flavor. I'm definitely coming back to try more things! Either way, it was totally eye candy and I was very pleased. Let me first start off by saying that this ain't no cheap brunch. You will def be spending those bucks, but it is TOTALLY worth it for the quality and quantity of food that you'll receive. That menu was looking TOO right. I almost couldn't even decide on what I wanted. That was until I laid my eyes on the mascarpone stuffed deep fried French toast. Say NO more! Ya girl just had to have it. MILLIONAIRES BACON! So happy to finally get reacquainted with my savory sweet friend. I'm a sucker for that flavor combo and the MB really gets my tastebuds excited. Looks like they are off to a great start with a 4.5 star average rating within their first month of opening. They have very successful sister restaurants in SF that I've tried with the MB- (Blackwood, Surisan). I woke up around 7:30a on a Sunday morning and decided to have a solo brunch on a whim. It was halfway packed when I arrived around 8:20a was bustling by 9am. I absolutely adore the succulent-laden restaurant front and how there is a fresh vibrant ambiance. They also have a bar that was shaking up some interesting drinks and an additional upstairs dining area. The menu housed several unique items I wanted to try, but I zeroed in on the Blackstone benedict, which had my favorite Millionaires bacon. Two girls beside me had the other dishes I wanted to try- the Parasite-movie inspired noodle dish with MB and an egg and the lemon ricotta pancakes! I lightweight wish I could have shared with them. (Downside of my solo grubventures.) My Blackstone dish came out in about 10 min and looked fabulous- they really take pride in their presentation, which is creative, whimsical and vibrant. From a glance of the yelp pics, the dishes seem to have their own personality, especially the popcorn chicken waffles and the stuffed French toast (omygah). One of my favorite parts of my meal was my poached egg test- I ran my knife through it and here comes a small river of delicious liquid gold! A+! Pair this with the buttery crispy tender sourdough, MB, blistered asparagus, and hollandaise sauce and it was an exciting bite! The asparagus added a lovely crunch. Also, the potatoes were crispy and the fruit was fresh- I didn't leave anything on my plate! While waiting for the restroom, I got food fomo because I kept seeing scrumptious-looking hot plates ready for delivery. I finally made it here. After looking at all the pictures on Yelp and IG I was pretty excited to be able to finally come and try this place I walked in and I was asked if I had reservations, I said no. No problem I was seated immediately. Water and menus were given to us. We ordered the sailor scramble, stuffed flapjacks, side of millionaire bacon Food came out pretty fast. Sailor scramble was good. Comes with shrimp, salmon and cheese. The house potatoes are very good also. Well worth 20$ The stuffed flap jacks were good but very chewy. Millionaire bacon was very good. Has a little of spice to it What I didn't like was that the seating is very tight. I mean like SUPER TIGHT. Our table was a table for two but it was right next to another table for two where other patrons were seated. The tables are so close to each other it's low key uncomfortable. When our food came out, we were also given the check Which made me feel rushed to like hurry up and eat and pay. The table is so small that our plates barley fit on the table so you feel very cramped eating Parking OMGG yeah parking just basically sucks. I had to park on a residential street 2 blocks down, after driving in circles. Friend had to park on a residential street also a few blocks down. Overall food is good. Service is good. Seating if you are at a table not all good. I'd rather sit at the bar where there seems to be more elbow room and privacy. The Millionaire's Bacon and the amazingly cool food presentations would be the main reasons to come. The quaint and cozy ambiance might be another reason. The food itself? Again, it looked great, but it was pretty firm, almost hard and not a bit soft. Strange for a waffle, IF it was freshly made. I'm assuming they couldn't use a totally soft or limp waffle because it needed to hold up to the stacked tower-like presentation, but it left me wondering how much earlier in the morning were my waffles actually made and then perhaps re-heated?? I did enjoy the thick-battered dark meat fried​ chicken and cauliflower. I was initially elated when I saw so many battered-fried pieces, but was dismayed to discover that there were actually only about 3-4 pieces of chicken and that the majority of the fried pieces were fried cauliflower. I didn't care for the adobo maple syrup, but that's probably a matter of preference. I would've preferred plain maple syrup, but I used it anyway​​and asked​ for more because frankly, the waffles were inedible without it. However, the raspberry​ jam was amazingly good, and I'd suggest you smother it all over everything you possibly can. I was so hopeful about this spot, but after spending close to $20.00 after tax and tip, I must say I left a bit disappointed. WOW, why have I not come here sooner?! I've always been dying to come here and finally decided to stop by since there wasn't a long wait, my husband and I came on a Wednesday morning, and we were seated right away. The inside is fairly small, but there's also outdoor seating available. I ordered the black stone Benedict, and it was delicious, 10/10, loved the millionaires bacon! Everything on the plate was scrumptious and the perfect amount of food. Also enjoyed the green tea latte. Our server was really nice, all staff were very friendly and attentive. We enjoyed breakfast (egg dishes with Asian flavors & a cheesesteak sandwich). Their potatoes are delicious. Kitchen story is pretty fantastic. This is my first time at their Oakland location, but I've been to the SF location once before. I didn't order what they were famous for so I just thought it was ok. But I came here around 10:30AM on a Monday morning, and the place was surprisingly filled up. The interior décor provides a really nice atmosphere; you can feel the quality even in the wood on the table, the color of the walls, etc. I felt like each detail got attention, and I didn't want to leave. I came here with my friend. She ordered a cappuccino along with the Mascarpone French Toast. She let me try both. The toast is very sweet inside and the exterior had a nice crisp texture. I would order it if I had a sweet tooth. For me, I ordered the Open Face, which the waitress said was popular, but when I was mostly done, I craved something else, and ordered the Berry Parfait. The Berry Parfait was delicious. It was simple sure, with strawberries and blueberries and granola, but I appreciated the texture of the cream and berries, alongside the firmness of the bowl that screamed quality. I felt like service could have been a little better by being a little nicer and more attentive but you bet I will definitely be coming back to try their other dishes! The good but the service staff and the kitchen is not enough for the crowd... we've waited 40 min for our dishes and some times came in witness order lie there appetizer... even simple coffee was very late. It's a very lively ambiance and great spot to catch up with friends. read more

I remember visiting and being disappointed by their flagship restaurant in San Francisco, perhaps I found their dishes too sweet or too rich. The Oakland outpost is similar in many respects, but this time, I've enjoyed their creativity and the the way their prepared their dish. The fried items were perfectly crisp and warm. I did enjoy the chicken and waffles, although it's not as good as the version I've had at the Hideout In Lafayette. I also recommend the jjapajuri, ahhh, yes, I recall memories of the movie, Parasite, with this dish. Service was spectacularly efficient. We didn't have to wait too long, even for a bustling Sunday morning. But of course, just like all other popular brunch spots, there's still a considerable wait to get in. read more

Came in on St. Patrick's Day at 12:30 and only waited about 35 mins until we got seated. Our server, Noah, was very attentive which was greatly appreciated especially since my friend and I did bottomless mimosas. He made sure that our carafe was always filled! Kitchen Story is located right across the street from my favorite restaurant... so it was a tough sell when my BF suggested we check this place out for date night. It's like we were cheating on our regular spot... right in front of it. Anyways, any feelings of guilt were quickly squashed upon walking in. This place is so cute! Thoughtfully decorated and the staff is incredibly friendly from the second you walk in. I ordered the Tamarino cocktail for a drink and wow wow wow! One of the best drinks I've had in the Bay Area! So spicy, so good. If you are obsessed with Jalepeno infused tequila like I am, this will be a big hit! For starters, we ordered the grilled oysters on a half shell. Incredibly delicious - perfectly seasoned and the broth is to die for. A must order. Then we both had the stonepot. I got the Tofu, bf got the Gabi. I enjoyed it, but it is hot and you need to keep stirring it so your rice doesn't get hard. Also, the portions are veryy generous! For dessert, we ordered the cappuccino mousse. Do not sleep on their desserts! They are amazing. Mousse was fluffy and light, served with fresh fruit. I was so impressed! Maybe I'm used to places serving unfrozen desserts but it was amazing having a dessert of such high quality.
