Decided to try Kiyo for the first time couple weeks ago. At first we were hesitant to visit since the previous restaurant (Osaka Ya) owner was killed shot and killed here. Asian culture thinks there's a bad omen but I said that's too superstitious to not try out a restaurant and YOLO. We both ordered the lunch combo and I decided with the salmon kama with mixed tempura. The salmon collar came out nicely seared, however it had a huge fishy smell to it. At a certain point, my friend said it was unbearable so I tried to put lemon juice over it to mask it. I thought the dish itself was pretty decent but a little too pricey in my opinion. Honestly, I want to try their sushi in the future but probably not their salmon collar anytime soon. read more

Since my initial 4 star review, I have been drawn back to Kiyo over and over again. Probably ten more times now. I've never experienced a sushi restaurant that so consistently delivers on absolutely fresh-day-caught tasting fish every single time. And such generously thick cuts. Ordered the lunch chirashi as well as the beef teriyaki with mixed tempura. The chirashi was relatively good, but there were a few components that were a bit off. I really enjoyed the scallop, which was drizzled with a bit of yuzu sauce(?) that brightened up the taste, as well as the salmon, chutoro, yellowtail, and yellowtail belly (probably the best piece!) The tuna, seaweed salad, and spicy tuna/spicy squid were not as good. The seaweed salad tasted a bit old, and the spicy tuna/squid tastes were completely covered up what must have been a very generous helping of sriracha. The beef teriyaki and mixed tempura were very good! The beef was cooked to about medium and the tempura was nicely fried, not too much batter or grease. KIYO is a hidden gem that I'm so glad I found! It's so hard to get takeout sushi in the middle of a pandemic because I'm always afraid it won't be as fresh when I get home, but luckily, I only live a mile away from this spot located in the Arcadia VONS plaza. I ordered through phone and was told it would take 20 minutes for my order to be ready. When I got there, the cashier was very busy as he was hustling to get all the orders out. Social distancing was enforced -- they put out a huge table to separate the employees and customers. I saw the kitchen staff poke their heads out and noticed that they all wore masks and gloves properly, so I felt safe doing takeout here. My favorite dish from them is the Salmon Don, which is packed with a lot of ikura and salmon sashimi. They offer lunch specials on the weekdays from 11 AM - 2 PM! Your orders will come with miso soup. If you're ever in Arcadia, make sure to stop by if you're craving sushi. read more

Second night in LA and the restaurants here continue to impress. Eating outdoors in 50-ish degree weather, but propane patio heater provided plenty of warmth. The fish was high quality, fresh and well proportioned. Uni tray were all creamy umami with a clean, sweet ocean flavor and I could envision the sea otters doing battle for these. Kumamoto oysters were briny and succulent. The fresh wasabi root was an unexpected plus. Four stars mostly because of the serving trays, all-disposable plates and utensils that did not complement the superior cuisine. Knife skills were also imperfect, but acceptable under the CV19 circumstances. Will come back when the world normalizes fully to see if there's a 5th star here. read more

Really love this cute restaurant. It's a hidden gem. It's small but clean, and the special lunch menu is pretty worthy it!!! The sushi rice is definitely Japanese rice and there's thick fish piece on top. We also had the halibut and salmon toro sushi which are really good and fresh too. What a pleasant surprise. This location has been several businesses for as long as I've known. I'm hoping this one will last. Great new renovation to the space, very quaint little space perfect for your family, couple or even a small party. When I went my waitress was new so I can't say the service was the best but she was definitely attentive. Great at clearing plates and making sure we were satisfied without being annoying. - mixed tempura 5/5 (great mix) - beef tongue 3/5 (kinda chewy but great flavor) - giant clam 4/5 (nice almost crunchy texture) - mixed sashimi platter 5/5 (fantastic mix & variety that included Toro & sweet shrimp... definitely getting this one again) I would rate the quality of their food and freshness at about an A- to B+. I almost feel like I'm a sushi/ Sashimi connoisseur having had as many places as I've had and although there's is quite good it's still not the best. Their beef tongue was a bit chewy but still not bad. I would get it again even though it's not the best I've had. One thing you definitely can't get away from is the great prices here. If I were to compare pricing to quality, totally worth it! You feel like you're going to a high-end restaurant for low pricing or to the opposite spectrum getting the best from a more casual restaurant. When you first enter, the part that stands out is the giant sushi bar that is highlighted by the recess lights. Aside from the accent of the blue tile behind the sushi bar, the decor of KIYO is well done. I felt like I was in the middle of Beverly Hills with the dim lights, and parts of the restaurant that have been accentuated by recess light. When my girlfriend and I sat down, we were handed an Ipad instead of a menu. Surprised at first, we quickly looked and saw that the Ipad is the menu! It is actually quite interactive and the display/pictures were great because you can see every dish/roll instead of having to go onto yelp and look for two pictures so compare which one looks better. Saves precious time! Food: I thought overall, the food was in between excellent and great; let me explain. The quality of the fish and taste of the rolls were excellent, but it lacked something unique. I've had many sushi rolls and fish in my professional career as an eater (just kidding). Only the unique tasting qualities grabbed my attention, and I didn't find that here. Don't get me wrong, still great sushi and the reason for the four stars. The chicken karaage appetizer was interesting because the pieces had more chicken content than batter. The chicken wasn't overly oily, and the amount of chicken per piece was exceptional. If you're used to the battered chicken karaage at most places, you won't find that here. The chicken is moist, and there is also a dipping sauce. Really good! Service: Our experience was the service wasn't the best. Our waiter did the bare minimum and we had to stand up and look around to get his attention when we had been sitting there for 10 minutes already waiting for the bill. Communicating with your guest is important; let us know that you'll be over in the corner if we need anything, so that gives the guest permission to flag you down. Anticipate your guests needs as well. We were sitting there talking for 15 minutes straight, so asking politely if we are ready for the bill would be a great way to anticipate our needs. I expected more from the service that we got. Ambiance: As I mentioned before, KIYO feels like a modernized, fancy restaurant with the color scheme and decor. It is definitely comfortable and kept clean. I wouldn't recommend bringing young children because of the overall experience, and also the nuisance it might be to other parties trying to enjoy a nice dinner. Overall, I have mixed feelings if I want to return because of the service and price. The price is about $2-3 more than your typical Japanese restaurant. As I mentioned before, there isn't anything "special" in regards to the taste and quality of the food. I hope it stays around because I'll be monitoring it since it is so close to my home. Been here since they opened back in 2018 and had the opportunity to visit their Irvine location when I'm out visiting friends in the OC. Both locations were very consistent in terms of food quality, consistency and service. From my personal experience, I've not ever come across a dull moment here at this establishment. The Chirashi (lunch/dinner), hand rolls and shabu shabu are my utmost favorite options to order. Portion size is generous and priced accordingly. The service is quick and exceptional. My friends and I went here for dinner on Valentines Day for their special and it wasn't too crowded. The wait was reasonable and seeing the status of where you are on the list through the Yelp app is helpful. Once we got inside, the decor and ambiance was surprisingly nice and upscale. It wasn't very big but it wasn't small either, it was spacious enough and intimate. We started off with the free miso soup we got with the Yelp check in as well as the agedashi tofu and they were both good. For the main dishes, we got all the specials (spicy tuna handroll, bluefin tuna sashimi and toro sashimi). The limit was 10 pieces for each but it was definitely enough for 4 people. Once our food arrived, we were pleasantly surprised by the quality despite having a special price. The cuts were good and the fish was very fresh. Overall, it was a great and fancy eating experience. Conveniently located in a big plaza with plenty of parking, KIYO is probably one of the better sushi restaurant around the area. Though the restaurant itself isn't too big, we came here on a Friday night and waited for about 10 mins to be seated at the sushi bar. Wasn't too bad since we had the small area to ourselves as there were 4 seats available and we only needed 3. Service itself wasn't too bad. Plenty of waitresses helping you out so didn't have to wait long for requests. However, I think they forgot our Chirashi bowl since that took the longest to make, however, it came about a couple of mins after we had them check on it. Make sure you check-in as you'll get options of different hand rolls. We opted for their Spicy Salmon and Spicy Yellowtail handrolls. Not too bad for free handrolls! Along with the free edamame, we also ordered uni suhi, Katsu Don and seared salmon roll. Enjoyed their handrolls and their seared salmon roll. The uni was also very good. Only thing are some of the sashimi in the Chirashi bowl. I think some tasted weird but overall, good experience here. Sushi wasn't too bad as well as the service. I thought it was because I dipped the soy sauce. I tried a bite without soy sauce and it has this slight slimy film taste in your mouth. The tuna and yellowtail was definitely fresh. Scallops and this other slice of white fish was good too. I think the sushi chef should taste the salmon and red snapper. I should have known better when I didn't hear that greeting when you first walk in through the door. This Japanese restaurant is Chinese owned and staffed. Great service when ordering. The table next to me got a complimentary edamame to share. I received an order of edamame as well. The bowl is in this figure eight shape. Try the ramen, not the sushi. Decent Japanese place with really nice decor! We ordered the lunch combo with ramen and sashimi side. I'd recommend this! The ramen was pretty good with a nice broth. The sashimi pieces were fresh. We also got the katsudon, which wasn't very good. It was dry and not enough sauce/ or egg, and because there wasn't enough sauce to eat the rice with, we ended up basically eating just the top portion (the pork cullet and some egg). Wouldn't get this again (recommend going to Ducks in San Gabriel for the best katsudon around the area LOL) We checked in and got a free dessert, when they brought it out it was such a small slice of cheesecake it was kinda funny LOL but hey it's free not gonna complain. Hubby & I decided to try this place because there was a waiting list at The Barn (which is next door). Sadly, it was very disappointing and it did not satisfy our cravings. The food and service was not up to par for what we paid. Fish was not all that fresh. Waited a long time for our fried sweet shrimp head & soup. Waiter never came by to check on us or refilled our water. This is what we ordered. 1) Sashimi platter A (not fresh) 2) Seabass (dry) 3) Kobe beef (chewy) 4) Sweet shrimp (meh) 5) Otoro Sashimi (nothing to brag about) We had to forced ourselves to finish the sashimi because we didn't want it to go to waste. The service here is awesome! The waiters are really attentive and kind. It's unfortunate because the food was subpar. The protein roll is pretty bland despite everything going into it. The dragon roll had an off-putting texture. The unagi don was good, but the eel sauce was a little too sweet. My favorite thing here is the takoyaki. I'd only come back for the takoyaki. I wasn't sure of Kiyo since I've been to the 2 prior restaurants at this location and they both closed down. Decided to give it a try after seeing the positive reviews. Overall my friend and I had a good dinner here. We shared the Chirashi don ($24.95), a seared salmon special roll ($15), and a mixed tempura ($6.95). We each had Yelp check in for free handroll. Since it's free the choices weren't that great because they are mostly spicy and I don't eat spicy. I got the tempura roll and my friend got the spicy tuna roll. All the sushis were fresh especially the Chirashi don. I wish they had a description of the special seared salmon roll, because it had spicy mayo and sriracha on top of each piece which I had to scoop out myself. The mixed tempura did had include 2 shrimps and a few pieces of vegetables. We could not finish the last couple pieces of each dish. Since it was not too busy on a Monday night, we did get very attentive service. Although they tend to take away dishes too quickly and we end up asking for extra bowls and spoons again since we were sharing. They also gave a big bowl of edamame beans for the table when you first sit down. The interior décor is very nice however the AC was blasted on pretty high. We tried their $14.95 lunch combo for take-out. I went with the tonkotsu ramen and spicy tuna bowl. This also comes with fruit, side salad and iced tea. The tonkotsu ramen was ok. I prefer a richer broth. I was expecting a more tasty flavored broth. It came with bamboo shoots, black mushroom, green onions, sprouts, a soft boiled half an egg and 4 thin cut slices of pork belly. The ramen noodles were ok. There was a decent amount but I could have used more. The other toppings were good, just not plentiful enough. The pork belly was good but I really felt the broth needed to be richer in this order. It was a decent bowl of ramen. I just expected more flavor-wise. The spicy tuna bowl side wasnt bad. It's a small side order of rice, spicy tuna and radish strings. It wasnt bad. Again, a small portion. The iced tea was refreshing and the fruit consisted of some orange slices. They were nice and sweet. The side salad was good. The dressing was tasty. Certainly cant beat the deal for this lunch combo with the amount of food you get. I've been coming to this sushi spot for a while now! The fish is as fresh as it can be snd the staff is super friendly and attentive. We each ordered an omakase and it was so delicious! I was full halfway throughout the meal. This place has a lot of daily specials which I enjoy! Also their yakitori is great! The way it tastes compared to other places is amazing! The food is great, the service is absolutely awful. As another person working in the food service industry, I am disgusted by how I was treated so any positive review towards their food has been abandoned. Attached in this review is what I ordered + how much I was charged. According to the lunch menu, I should be pay about $43 with tax for these two. However, I was also incorrectly charged with $248 as well. Because the store was quite busy, I understood that servers would be more prone to mistakes. When the bill came, the waitress told me about the incorrect charge and how they were going to void the bill. Being a complete novice at how debit card works, I thought the money would be immediately refunded to me but was shocked when the charge was still shown on my account. (I now understand how it works, but here comes the problem). As a result, I called Kiyo to ask about the charge and was hung up on by the rudest possible employee possible. I was in the middle of talking (in a civil tone, I had never raised my voice) and the person cut me off and started pretending they couldn't hear me. My phone is still fairly new and I had just gotten off the phone with another person, so I know my microphone was perfectly fine. I have no background noise as well. After a minute of continuous "I can't hear you"s, I was hung up on. I gave the store the benefit of the doubt and thought that maybe their store was just incredibly busy and the environment really was too loud. However, when I called back, another person picked up and was able to hear me perfectly fine. This person was a lot more understanding after they took the time to actually listen to my situation. Though I did not understand how voiding worked, I appreciated the patience this person gave me. Being a student working a minimum wage job, I can't afford to just wait around with $248 missing from my bank account. I called simply for clarification because I was confused and really scared but I was instead dismissed as if I were a person who was just calling as if I had nothing better to do. Don't get me wrong, the food isn't bad, but the atmosphere and service of an establishment is something just as important. If you're interested in people treating you like shit though, I think you should definitely ask for whoever answered my call first. They're pros at avoiding their responsibilities. This display of unprofessional, dismissive, and downright immature behavior is something that has solidified my opinion: I don't want to come back again. read more

We've gotten take out here more than 10 times since the start of this pandemic and everytime we ordered during 11:30-1pm the quality has been consistently bad and everytime we order after 1pm or during dinner, the quality has been consistently superb. So to get really good sushi everytime, I'll have to remember to only order after lunch rush, not whenever I want sushi. Wonderful new sushi restaurant that just opened in Arcadia at the Vons plaza. The boyfriend and I tried the chirashi bowl and tonkotsu ramen. At first, we thought the price of the chirashi bowl was a bit hefty. However, the sushi tasted extremely fresh and is cut in generous slices. Plus, they give two slices of toro! I couldn't believe my eyes. I just wish they gave more sushi rice to go along with the fish. But it was definitely worth the price and I'd order it again in a heartbeat! The ramen was rich in flavor, but not too overwhelming either. The restaurant itself is beautifully designed with a nice atmosphere, perfect for date night. Plenty of parking available in the lot. My husband was majorly craving uni so doing a quick Yelp search I found Kiyo. We came here for lunch and there was ample parking. Though it's a more cozy restaurant we were promptly seated. We ordered: - lunch special churashi bowl: so good. It was fresh, had generous portions, and good variety. I would highly recommend if you enjoy sashimi. - lunch special tonkatsu ramen with a shrimp tempura roll: lunch special comes with a side salad. The noodles were cooked perfectly, the broth was creamy and rich, and the pork was extra fatty (which my husband loved, but I did not enjoy). Overall, ok. - uni don: this was the highlight of lunch. The uni was sweet, creamy, and so fresh. It was so good that my husband cannot stop raving about it. I HIGHLY recommend getting this if you are an uni fan. This has to be my top 3 uni places. - sashimi platter B: though everything was so fresh and the shrimp was especially sweet, valuewise I think the lunch churashi bowl would have sufficed. By far the best sushi spot around this area! I came to this plaza planning to eat another nearby restaurant but was intrigued by this place and gave it a try. My boyfriend and I came around lunch time and we both ordered the chirashi bowl. The chirashi bowl was very generous in portion and at a reasonable price for the quality of the fish! Every cut was amazing, even the basic type of fish was buttery and fresh. I'm also happy they include scallop in the chirashi bowl! We loved this place so much we came back and ordered sushi by the piece. We ordered salmon, yellowtail, ootoro, ikura, uni and scallops. Everything was delicious!! We also got the spicy scallop & negi toro cut roll, both amazing and would order both again. My boyfriend got their karage chicken and enjoyed it both times. Craving Chirashi Bowls so we ordered from KIYO at lunchtime. Was very impressed of what sashimi were included in this dish - loved the fresh scallop with black caviar :) 2 Chirashi bowls of lunch special ($16.95 each) were ordered by phone. A very friendly staff took the order and told us that the food would be ready in 20min. The wait time was very reasonable. They brought our order from the fridge or low temperature area, unlike other Japanese restaurants which just left the sashimi orders at the counter before the customers picked up the food. The fishes and mixed tuna (2 flavors - spicy and non-spicy) were soooo fresh and delish! The sashimi fishes were thick-cut. The portion was just right for an adult. When we got home, we found that they forgot to give us our rice that came with the sashimi lunch set. The tempera was not cooked right with vegetables being completely raw. The fish in my sashimi was fresh but had a lot of chewy pieces and was oddly cut, the teriyaki chicken and salmon Kama were overcooked. With that said, the rice was good. my friend and i saw a picture of their chirashi bowl and were SOLD. called in for take out on a sunday evening. we ordered 2 deluxe chirashi bowls and a rainbow roll. the guy on the phone was not the friendliest - also, they do not take your card over the phone. food was ready in about 25 minutes. the chirashi bowl was delightful. there was a really nice array of fish including salmon, tuna, shrimp, & uni. in my opinion, the rainbow roll was a skip. tasted fine but kind fo expensive for the quantity. definitely will be back for more chirashi though :p read more

Dishes were good but it's overpriced for what you get IMO. I forgot what dishes we got here but they weren't as memorable. The sushi rolls had a good ratio of rice to fish and were creative. And they do a pretty good job of being covid safe. For example, they have wasabi in to go containers, keep the door open and have outdoor seating. read more

Kiyo is highly, highly recommended by my brother-in-law for their incredible quality of fish while keeping the prices low. So I decided to check it out within 2 weeks time after his pointer. I almost never take action so urgently, but I am glad I did. Because Kiyo is clearly a 5-star winner, (if you're aiming to eat raw fish and seafood). Side note: if you're going for other menu items like ramen, this review wouldn't apply. I haven't tried those. Your miles may vary. Now that COVID's coming to an end, I was able to make a reservation for both indoor and outdoor dining. The choice is up to the customer. Since the interior wasn't too busy, and each table is spaced apart enough, I chose to dine inside. Three of us were having dinner, and we all got the exact same items. We each opted for one sushi set (chef's choice, various fish and seafood, most nigiri), and we added one piece of Hokkaido uni sushi just to try. The set was around $43 pre-tax, and contains 12 pieces of sushi. (A very filling set; should be able to satiate most adults' appetites.) I am not an expert on raw fish, even though I love eating them. Hence, I don't know the exact names of what I consumed tonight; except I know masago, scallop, fatty tuna were included. Perhaps yellowtail was in the mix as well. Many of them were familiar taste-wise, meaning I've definitely had them before, though I never once bothered learning any names. However, I can still fairly and competently compare the quality with prior experience, and Kiyo's supply of fish items were high-quality and fresh. Some were melt-in-your-mouth good. A few pieces were smoky in flavor due to light searing. Masago was not overly salty or fishy, which was great. Every single piece was enjoyable (and fresh! Tip: Soy sauce and wasabi (house made?) were provided by default, but both ponzu and yuzu were also honored when requested. These condiments elevated the flavor profiles even further! My brother also suggested us to try the Japanese uni, so we did. They had run out of the American raised uni for the night, so we had to go for the more expensive Hokkaido sushi at $12 pre-tax a pop. (Two pieces per order minimum; we ordered 3 for 3 people.) This uni was great. No fishy taste. No "old" uni aftertaste, meaning fresh. Creamy and sweet. Goes down easy. I loved it. Was it worth $12, though? No. This was overpriced. I am very happy to have tried it, but my wallet objective knows it isn't the most sensible purchase. It's a splurge. But all in all, great dinner. Every single diner of my group of 3 was satisfied. It ended up to be exactly $70 per person including tax and tip, and yours may alter depending on how much you tip. Most of the damage resulted from the high-end uni, as mentioned, so this did not prevent me from giving Kiyo a well-deserved 5-star rating. Yelp check-in will grant you a free offer of either miso soup or dessert. But as of late, everyone's getting miso soup, which is not necessarily a con, but I prefer free dessert mochi. The miso soup was good, though. Not too salty, just the way we like it. As mentioned by other Yelpers, yeah, they are still using disposable utensils (plates, cups, chopstick, etc) due to COVID restrictions or whatnot. Does it make it feel/look a bit cheap? Perhaps a bit. Does it affect the quality of food? Absolutely not. Some of y'all maybe complainin' a bit too much. They're just trying to obey some of the health rules and make a living under unusual circumstances. Pandemic is coming to an end; I trust that they will return back to their normal dishware when the time they deem right. Staff in general is quick, responsive, friendly, and accommodating. Overall, reasonably priced, food of great quality, decent staff, plenty of parking. This may just become my Japanese restaurant of choice! (Definitely better than Sugarfish. I am paying less here, for both more quantity and quality.) read more
