First, if you're looking for lobster, there isn't any here. It's a fish 'n chips place (with other good stuff), but no lobster despite the name. Second, it's excellent. Arizona has a problem with fish 'n chips. Namely that all they have here are the square, frozen fish patties. All the places Arizonans rave about (like Pete's and Mandy's, etc.) are just frozen fish patties. That's not fish 'n chips. That's a TV dinner. Thankfully, Knock Kneed Lobster is a throwback to an actual fish 'n chips joint. No frozen patties anywhere in sight. The place was built in the 40s and it's in a crappy neighborhood near Sky Harbor airport and diagonal from a strip joint. But don't let that stop you. There is so much to try here and none of it disappoints. The fish is Alaskan cod and it's as good as anything in the west coast. California has some stellar fish n chips, and the fish here is just as good. The cod is flaky and mild and fresh. The batter is cornmeal based, but it's light and not doughy or raw inside. They fry it to a perfect golden brown. The menu has dozens of variations of it (1 piece, 2 piece, 3 piece with 2 shrimp, etc.). The basic fish n chips comes with some old fashioned French fries (the perfect skinny ones like they should be). And one of the best parts is the "salsa bar" where you get your own tartar sauce, ketchup, cocktail sauce, ranch, fresh cut lemons, as much as you want. Mix and match; whatever. In another area you can dispense malt vinegar and Louisiana hot sauce to your heart's content. And in another area is an enormous fountain drink machine with everything you can imagine. But beyond the fish 'n chips is a lot more. The fried shrimp is awesome. They have clams and oysters and catfish too. And don't miss the fried zucchini. It's one of the best I've ever had, and their ranch is excellent. The fried mushrooms are to die for, so it's tough to pick! This place is the real deal. It's definitely a throwback to another era, and I imagine these places won't survive for much longer. Family-owned restaurants are being attacked through regulation, economic pressure, city ordinances, and enormous pressure from corporate-owned eateries. Fountain drinks, beer and wine to drink. Plus - Sauce Bar! Help yourself to cocktail sauce, ketchup, good tartar sauce, and ranch against one wall. Find large stainless steel containers of malt vinegar and Louisiana hot sauce across from the register and order counter. This spot is clean! For a restaurant specializing in mostly fried foods, I couldn't smell grease at all. Once we got our food, the grease was clean and the batter was light and crispy. All of our food was cooked perfectly. DELICIOUS. My coworker and I were talking about how much we love fried zucchini one day and she recommended this spot. So thankful that she did. Located in a bit of a questionable part of town, but don't let that stop you -- the food more than makes up for it. Their fish and chips are consistently excellent: crispy batter, flaky fish, and properly cooked chips. The fried zucchini is next level -- light, crunchy, and addictive -- and the sauce is what really seals the deal every time. My only gripe is that the fish portions have shrunk over the years, which keeps this from being a full five-star spot. This is my second time eating here and both times were five stars. The first time I ordered carry out and it took about 1/2 hours to get home. The food was still warm and crispy. This time I ate there and the food was piping hot and delicious. I order the fish with mushrooms or onion rings. The mushrooms are the best I've had in Arizona. Whoever said this place has great seafood must have never tasted southern fried catfish and hush puppies. The catfish had no seasoning, and the hush puppies were disgusting, made with too much flour and not enough corn meal making them taste like a fried biscuit rather than hush puppies. No one has the quality at the price and value and consistency in Seafood and Fish in the Valley like Knock Kneed Lobster does. Don't get me wrong, this is not by any means a Bluewater Grill, Mariscos Playa Hermosa or Ocean 44. I call Knock Kneed Lobster the 'Working Man's' (or Woman's) fish house. I am constantly amazed with each visit as to how good these folks are, and why they've been around for so long, since the 1940s! Although the owners describe the location as unassuming, it is far from it. As I mentioned before, with its design and color scheme remind you of a seafood restaurant more appropriately located by the seashore beach town than in the middle of a desert. But it's a site for sore eyes, and the quenching of the seafood connoisseur palate. It's also amazing to me as to how large and extensive there menu is, and that every item tried from the menu is good, fresh, quickly prepared and best of all, tasty! From their mains like Grilled Boneless Trout to Garlic Baked Cod Filet, or really good Deep-Fried Catfish and fresh Grilled Lobster Tails, to their Cajun Grilled Tilapia, Seafood Platters, Shrimp Platters and even Fried Oysters - you can't miss. I don't believe that the fish is well seasoned so I always add hot sauce. The hush puppies are my favorite. They're nice and crispy but nice and fluffy on the inside. Service is always great. We went in anyway. Gal at the counter had been there since the last time we went. This place is unique and always has been. It is not a five star dining area. It is what it has always been. Good hot food served at a good price. We enjoyed the fish and chips. Onion rings tasty too. Fun atmosphere. Good customer service without an attitude. Tables and floor were clean. One of our favorite places for fish and chips. Definitely a throwback hole-in-the-wall kind of place. Masks are required when away from your table, but the sauce bar has reopened and one guest at a time can fill/refill their drinks at the soda fountain. Our go to meal here is the three fish taco plate. We'll usually add a small order of fries or an order of hush puppies as well. They do have a couple of larger rooms for bigger parties and several built in booths/tables. They also have an outdoor patio area for dining when the weather is nice.
