This would be the third time we have been here. We had such a nice experience the last two times we were here. This time we ran into an employee that really sucked. I have worked in the coffee industry for years. I know employees start to shut down the store prior to closing so they can leave quick and get ornery when customers come in late and order something from the clean equipment. We simply wanted to get ice cream. The people who just stepped away from the register had ordered ice cream. The lady taking orders asks what we would like, we respond, "what ice cream are you serving?" She calls over this young man. He informs us the ice cream is no longer available. Ok, we step aside, my wife proceeds to ask about another of their items. She wasn't clear what it was, well this annoyed him greatly and he started to correct her in a condescending tone. This is the hawaii I come to visit!! Laid back mellow slow vibes. This little coffee shop has a little bit of everything you need and more. We grabbed the everything bagel with cream cheese and lox and a croissant with turkey and cheddar ong with a regular and decaf latte. It was absolutely perfect. Hawi is a rad little hippy spot where time doesn't exist and living does. delicious bbq chicken burrito melt and purple sweet potato salad! the burrito was grilled nice and crispy on the outside and was juicy and flavorful. The chicken was cooked nice and tender, the cheese was melted and there was also corn and black beans with a delicious, creamy secret sauce. I also got a cold brew coffee with sugar free vanilla syrup. Their coffee isn't Kona coffee but from South America, however it is still really good. So pleased with my whole experience at Kohala Coffee Mill! Stopped here for lunch after a long drive and hike with a group of very hungry folks. We ordered the ulu burger, moa sandwich and a few southwestern wraps. Everyone was happy with their food and the ingredients tasted fresh. We also ordered a smoothie that I cannot recommend enough! It was creamy and smooth while still being dairy free. Super refreshing. To end the afternoon, we went back for ice cream and coffee for the road. Kohala Coffee Mill was on my list to visit for one simple reason. They scoop Tropical Dreams ice cream here. You can get it by the pint in the store but there's something special about grabbing a scoop or two in a sugar cone. I got a scoop of lychee and the ice cream was as perfect as I remember! Creamy, flavorful, and right on point! While visiting, I saw a number of regulars come in and a few tourists. I bought a cup of iced Kona coffee and a bagel sandwich. The bagel sandwich was an unexpected surprise. It's everything I love in a bagel - crisp outside and chewy inside. I had turkey, cheese, and sprouts and it was amazing! I can't remember the last time I bought sprouts in Seattle! On my next trip, I'll have to set aside two visits! read more

Parking was a bit difficult and since it was lunch hour, it was crowded with tourists, although Hawi is a tiny town. Ambiance: We stopped by here on the way to Pololu Valley for a bite to eat. It's a cute indoor and outdoor diner along the main hwy where there are 10-15 other stores. Food: We ordered an angus burger which was tasty and a chicken burger which was dry. It seemed like an eternity before we got our food probably 20-25 minutes. I used that time to window shop at almost all the shops on that street. I enjoyed taste testing their ice creams and decided that I liked their Coconut, Mac Nut, and Kona ice cream the most. They give a decent amount for the price you pay. Overall: The prices are good if you are on a budget, but I would not drive up to Hawi just for this restaurant. However, if I ever have a reason to go there again, I will definitely check out other food items on the menu. read more

I made my trek out here from the hotel we were staying at and it was worth the drive. I was so tired of hotel food and nothing was hitting the spot. I finally ventured out on my own to look for something good and I found t here. They had some of the best Kona coffee I've ever had and I'm not a big fan of Kona coffee I think its over rated. They turned me on to some great Kona from Fikes and I'm sold, it blows away anything I've had at Peets coffee and they are my favorite. The breakfast I had was so great that I came back again the next day. Thank you Kohala you saved my trip! This is also such a great little town and some of the best views in Hawaii. read more

We ended our Big Island stay on a surprising high note yesterday. The drive up from Puako was beautiful, and we couldn't resist the siren song of performers in front of the Kohala Coffee Mill. The music was really fun - a mix of musicians would join in on different songs - ukulele, guitar, harmonica, bongo drums... The people sitting near us were also very friendly. Our drinks were really good, and the food passing us by was tempting even though we'd just eaten. If you're in Hawi you must check out the Coffee Mill. My husband and I have been coming here for a decade and it just keeps getting better all the time. Amazing coffee drinks, yummy breakfast sandwiches and lunch sandwiches and salads and the BEST I've cream on the island. My favorite sandwich is the veggie sandwich with pesto and hummus but I've never had anything in the menu that wasn't tasty. The salads are all delicious and if you like baked goods they their homemade pumpkin chocolate chip bread. And while the food is wonderful it's truly the staff that makes this place shine. Had some ice cream here. I wasn't impressed. The floor was littered with pieces of cabbage. I do not know why. I thought maybe for some small rodent they were keeping as a pet, but I could not see any animals. It's a touristy place packed with stuff to sell. So packed that I immediately have this subconscious desire to run outside, get into my car and drive. I suppose it's the sensory overload that we introverts get when put into confined spaces that have too much stuff around us. The place must be popular because there were lots of people when we were there. I was most happy when we left. I think the person that used our table felt the same way because they left their candy bar on the table. So eager to leave they forgot to bring the item they purchased. read more
