During our last visit, we notice they are selling a gluten free bread. My wife has food allergies, Gluten, Dairy and Whey. For years we always stop in and we would grab a sandwich. But my wife developed food allergies, Gluten, Dairy and Whey. For the last six years, I would grab a sandwich and she would pack a lunch bag. But during our last visit, our jaw dropped when we'd noticed the gluten free bread they are now selling. We purchased a loaf and they made a sandwich. She had happy tears. We went to Kohnen's on a Saturday and arrived around noon. Despite being a very warm day for Tehachapi (85 degrees), the place was very busy. First, I must say that they followed all of the current California COVID rules. Including masks, social distancing, and outdoor dining. There were plenty of tables outside from small two toppers to large 8 person tables. All except one was in the shade. The tables were spaced apart from each other. The sandwiches we ordered were fantastic. My brother ordered the Ruben while I created my own. From the meats, to the bread and veggies, everything was extremely fresh. They had a huge assortment of pastries and desserts. We of course had to order a few of those for the road. I ordered the Apfel Strudel and it was fantastic! Looking forward to my next time passing through and making a stop there. read more

Amazing bakery! :) I'm the stereotypical hungry Pacific Crest Trail hiker, so I got a little greedy when I ordered. I got a coconut macaroon, a bearclaw, and w chocolate eclair, in addition to a black coffee. (A very well balanced meal, I know.) The macaroon was a little dry but great for the price ($1.50, I think), the bearclaw was intricately crafted and yummy, but the eclair... The eclair was a masterpiece. The cream was the real deal, made out of real ingredients (you can tell when it's the artificial stuff that Walmart mass-produces), and the whole thing was so delicious that eating it was a chore. A delicious, scrumptious chore. :) I was at the bakery during the lunch hour, but the line moved fast - the friendly crashers made sure to swoop in and help as many customers as possible. My fellow hiker-trash friend ordered a salad with everything on it, and it ended up weighing about 5 lbs. An amazing deal for just $10! I can't recommend this bakery highly enough, whether you're a local, a tourist, or a fellow hiker trash like myself. (And needless to say, the black coffee was quite good, too!) read more

5 stars for this amazing bakery in Tehachapi! We initially stopped on the way to the Grand Canyon, but they're closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays, so we resolved to stop on our way back. The whole trip we were sincerely looking forward to baked goods! We came in later in the afternoon and many items were sold out, which honestly, is a very good sign! There were tons of pastries and cookies left for us to choose from. I ordered two sugar cookies, a raspberry cheesecake, and four butter flake rolls. The cashier was super nice and offered me a spinach feta pastry for free as it was a day old. No food waste here, I appreciate that so much! The standout items for me were the cheesecake, rolls, and the spinach feta pastry. The cheesecake was absolutely delightful! It's the perfect size for one person and I tried to stretch it out over a few days, but couldn't help myself, it was sooooo good. I also loved the butter flake rolls, perfect with soup or a lunch salad. I had the spinach pastry the next day for breakfast and it made my day! For the price (my order came out to $9 and some change), portions and the amazing quality of the baked goods, stopping by Kohnen's is a must and I can't wait for my next time in Tehachapi. read more

Getting here EARLY!!! IS VERY IMPORTANT if you want first pick of pastries to die for. This is some of the freshest German baked breads. Awesome service ,great ambiance ,hole in the wall,beautiful friendly people,small town crowd bustling business. Hot soups in bread bowls,huge sandwiches no skimpy stuff here. I love Cherry Pie and all their pies and baked goods are handmade on site. The sandwich has a list you have to mark on a sheet of paper what you want & don't want on your sandwich. This is the second time here and it never disappoints. Of course because of Covid-19 we were unable to sit inside so it was too go only. The sandwich was delish!!! Yum ! Although they were all out of the cheese bread which is my favorite I had my sandwich on a baguette and that was also Good! The cream puff was super good as was the brownie. My friends live in Tehachapi and they post pictures of this place all the time so when I went to visit them, I had to go see for myself. Firstly, I went to Germany when I was a kid and this place definitely has the feel of the many German bakeries we visited. The bakery case was a little overwhelming. There were so many options! I came in with a plan which went out the window once I started looking! I ordered the full Poor Boy sandwich to go (literally ate it for breakfast, lunch and dinner) and half the bakery case... not really but it felt like it! I got a carrot cake (small square, not a full cake), a loaf of zucchini bread, a lemon bar, a caramel apple tart, two oatmeal cookies and a sticky nut bun! Oh, and a coffee. The coffee was a basic set up of carafes to serve yourself. The sandwich was awesome. The bread was crunchy and soft and it was all very satisfying. The sticky nut bun and caramel apple tart were good. The carrot cake was spicy and sweet and delicious. The lemon bar was disappointing because the base was really thick and not crispy, more crumbly which is not what I like. The oatmeal cookies and zucchini bread were scrumptious. All in all, a very nice experience and I'm sure I'll be back when I'm in town again. read more

What a great little find. Normally we would stop off in Tehachapi to fuel up and then keep rolling. This time we decided to see what was around and what a great decision that was! What a cool spot. This eatery is right in the heart of Tehachapi. You cannot miss it! Always busy. Always! Lots of seating. I like the baked goods. I find this place pricey though. We went on a group ride up here and we all got different things. I got a soup of the day which was clam chowder. I cannot fib. It tasted straight from the can. Thick and gloopy. I only ate half and brought the rest home to fix it up later with spices and more milk. Thankfully, I got a bun with my soup so I ate that and was satisfied. I also ordered a pretzel bun for later as well as a chocolate chunk cookie. My weakness-cookie. The cookie was a 5 and did not make it home! Hubby ordered a Cuban sandwich and it was at least 30 min for this sucker to come out. Way too long but he really enjoyed it. He took half home for later. Also comes with a small bag of Lays chips. He also ordered the other soup of the day which was artichoke and chicken. Also very thick and strong tasting of nothing but artichoke. We both agreed we would not get the soups again. The cold sandwiches that our friends were having looked amazing/large and they seemed to take way less time to come out of the kitchen. There is a little station apparently that I did not see due to the lay out here that had self serve cold water and a place to wrap and bag your leftovers. The coocoo clock was pointed out to us as it was about to go off. Super cute. Very German. A Hansel and Gretel type pair came out of the clock and everyone seemed to get a kick out of this. Something different as I had not seen a coocoo type clock since my Granny's house. The atmosphere is decent here. Homey but loud like a food/dining hall. The owner works hard. I always see her there but she is all business just due to the sheer volume of guests she serves. Next to this bakery on one side is the historic train depot that we later went to check out. On the other side of the bakery is an antique shop so many of us went in there to walk around and check things out. This bakery is a destination stop for sure if you want a baked treat or are into homemade sandwiches where you can choose your own toppings. read more

I cannot complain about the quality or taste of the pastry products. We purchased some to eat there and after eating our treats decided to buy some beer. We went with the beer to the counter where it says to pay for single items, down on the end by where phone orders also check in. With five ladies "working" behind the counter, we were ignored for well over five minutes. I told my wife that maybe we just walk away and leave the beer on the counter. There was one couple buying pasties together. One of the ladies was folding and refolding a black apron. Does not make sense that all these "employees" would choose to ignore us for so long, what with us standing there with a six pack of beer and a $20 bill on the counter. I guess the lesson for me is don't try to buy anything but bakery goods in the glass cases. read more

So we got there on Sunday at about 130, and wanted sandwiches. They were basically out of most of their bread, so we ended up with the cheddar bread sliced. The sandwiches were surprisingly delicious! I was worried it was going to be cheap over processed turkey meat, but it was actually a good quality, and sliced thick. It's not boars head (etc), but we would definitely order them again. I wish they made more bread or made it throughout the day so more options would be available, but that's what takes it from 5 stars to 4. We also tried the eclairs (yum), the peach pie (delicious), and the peanut butter cookies (good, but too much sugar on top in one spot). read more

Easily one of the best bakeies in Kern County. Its hard to beat a place that makes all of their own bread and pasteies and sells all of them seven days a week. The fam and I have been there multiple times, sometimes we will drive there just to grab a box of delicious treats. They have outstanding sandwiches, which there is a usually a line to the door, if you come during peak lunch hours. I think we have tried all of their baked goods too, which we are never not impressed. They make their own prezels, on top of all of the sweet treats too. The best part about this place is it is right in the middle of downtown Tehachapi, in front of the train tracks, which is pretty picturesque, with the mountains behind it as well. Definately one of my top ten places to visit within the Kern County area. If you are from Bakersfield or Tehachapi, or just passing through, this place is a must stop place to have on your list, whether it be for lunch, or to grab a box of their delicious cream puffs, or even their other delectible baked goods. 5 stars all day long for Kohnen's Bakery. read more

Loved our food and our customer service by one of the men working behind the counter, however we were approached by "Gina" I believe her name is and she asked us if we had been helped, the man had taken our sandwich orders and left and we still wanted to order pastries so we weren't sure if he was coming back to do so, in the middle of my husband trying to let her know that (we've only been in less than a handful of times and weren't sure) she cut him off mid sentence and very rudely/unprofessionally, repeated her question. Foods is great staff SUCKS. Christina or Christine you need to work on your tone. She sounded just so damn irritated at me ordering. I try to be fast and know exactly what I am to be ordering so I am not taking too long. I get that this is a busy establishment, but too busy to be nice? She is hurrying me along so I'm picking up the pace, she cuts me off rudely. That's when I was over it. I asked her name, and, miraculously, her tone changed which to me means she has done this before. I asked to speak to someone else because she was just so short and rude! She then said "I'm the only person here so..." I replied "okay, well you're being really rude." She, in her changed I'll be nice now tone, "oh, I'm sorry about that." I continued my order. Super cute German bakery cafe in the older part of town. The exterior is deceptive, as the interior is quite spacious and large. In addition to a large array of breads and pastries, they offer sandwiches as well as a small selection of novelty gifts. Service is friendly and helpful. The husband loved the veggie bierock and haus coffee. The bread of the bierock was very good, and the filling had a delightful spice to it. He also enjoyed the brotchen, which reminded him of his time in Germany, and the tart crumbly cranberry scone. I had the classic bierock. I also thought the bread was very good, but that the ground beef and onions could've used a little more spice. Or maybe some mustard on the side to dip it in. I also tried the ham and cheese croissant. The croissant itself is delicious, buttery and chewy, and the cheddar cheese super sinful, but the ham itself was a little too salty and a bit dry. Husband and I also split the lemon bar and chocolate hazelnut ring. The lemon bar was more pastry than lemon, but the chocolate hazelnut ring was amaaaaazing: shortbread with hazelnut cream filling, dippped in dark chocolate with whole hazelnuts on top. The place is CHAOTIC! Parking is small. The establishment is clean and tidy. The breads are very hard at the bite and I've noticed they're ALWAYS out of certain items. That's frustrating when you want a tuna sandwich and they're out. Excellent food, fast paced and always busy. My fiancé and I were in town for a night and was recommended this place by a local on the morning after. It was on our way and we hadn't eaten breakfast yet so we decided to grab something to-go. This place is one of the best bakeries I've been to in a while and I would recommend it to everyone I can. I went for a Lox Bagel sandwich with a cheese jalapeño bagel and my fiancé built his own sandwich. There are papers in the front that you can write on which made it super convenient because he had to watch our dog outside. Both outdoors and indoors decorations were gorgeous and homey. I was mesmerized! The display case showed an incredible amount of freshly made desserts and they had a fridge just for drinks. They prefer cash but they still accept card if you don't have any. They also don't have an iced coffees sadly but they tried recommending me a coffee shop in the same town so if I really wanted it, I could have went to two local spots. The food was ready in 5 minutes and everything tasted amazing. So amazing that I wish I turned my car around and got more sandwiches. Overall, I would definitely come back to the area just for this bakery. 10/10 read more

Stopped here for lunch on a road trip. What a gem! We got 3 sandwiches, all were great. The bread was great (recommend the sheepherder's bread, it's wonderfully soft on the inside with a thick, crisp crust) and the fillings were all tasty and seemed to be high quality. It was also great to take a break inside, as it felt like stepping into another world. Will be back on our next trip that brings us over the Tehachapis. read more

I love Kohnen's bakery. They have a huge selection of pastry and breads daily and their Rueben sandwich is hard to beat. We often drive to Tehachapi from Bakersfield just to enjoy the food and fresh air. Our last two visits were less than stellar. We went to Kohnen's in June to get away for the afternoon. Our sandwiches were on point as usual and the cookies were a great end to our meal. My issue on this day is I felt very rushed by the person helping me behind the counter. If you've never been to Kohnen's, their selection is extensive. You can go in thinking you want one thing, and then see all the delicious treats and be swayed to get something else or additional. The attendant had zero patience for indecision, and seemed irritated that I continued to add to my order. Sorry your food looks good and I want to purchase more. It made me feel like I was an inconvenience instead of a customer. It wasn't exactly crowded at the time, so I shouldn't be made to feel rushed to pay. I ended up going through the line twice because I felt like I was wasting the girl's time and she didn't want to help me, even though I spent over $60 on food and treats. This last time, September, we came to Tehachapi just for Kohnen's and their sandwiches. It's a 35-45 minute drive so it's not exactly a quick trip there and back. I attempted to call in our order around 11:30 am and was told they no longer serve their top selling sandwiches at lunch because it's busy. I'm sorry, you don't sell one of your most popular items BECAUSE people order it too much?? I understand that the kitchen can get backed up, but I would have happily waited 20-30 minutes for a Rueben on their fresh bread. At least give customers the option. If you don't serve those sandwiches for lunch anymore, when the heck do you offer them?? As we left, they put out an A-frame sign that said no Ruebens or Cubano sandwiches "today". If it was just today, why were they completely removed from the ordering slips? I came all that way just to eat their tasty food and ended up eating at another restaurant. If you can get their Rueben, I highly recommend it, though I don't know when that would be. It's hard to want to make that trip knowing they may not serve what you want. read more

This is an especially nice bakery right in the heart of Tehachapi at the railroad depot. It's sort of charming inside and nice to browse at what they have to offer. They sell a large variety of different bakery products, but I always find it a treat to buy a loaf of freshly baked bread. They have several varieties to choose from. It's a bit more expensive than breads that are sold at the supermarket, but it's a thousand times more enjoyable. read more

Another woman at the counter was helping another person getting several dozens of things. I asked if she could grab me ONE thing and she was very rude to me. Several people were back behind the counter and didn't appear to be doing anything.
