Incredible baked goods! The prices were impressive. If you're passing by you have to stop here and get something. It has a homey feel and lots of seating.

Delicious baked goods, a specialty of the German culture. Last time I stopped in, I picked up a delicious Bear Claw with a cup of coffee. We've visited before as a family for lunch and had a great time. Sandwiches, pastries and drinks are ordered at the counter. Plenty of tables are available inside and on the patio. Many of the signs are bilingual English/German (for example "Knives/Messer"), something you don't see everyday. Free parking in the lot and on the street.

Zucchini sliced bread with walnuts was great, Kohnen's has various deserts, bread, pastries, soups & sandwiches all look delicious !

Super cute bakery and lunch place in old town tehachapi. Although not much parking, we were able to get a spot in their 60 minute slots. Even though it was busy, our order line went fast. If ordering a sandwich, they have custom order forms on clip boards out side which makes the line go faster. Most sandwiches are between $10 and $15. The food is tasty and definitely worth the stop!

Visiting area & trying out different eateries during our stay. We attended the Annual Apple Festival, missed out on apple pies and wife was craving something sweet. Stopped in & immediately felt like we were back in Germany (we were stationed there years ago). Loved the decor and the design of the dining area. You order at a counter which is full of temptations- LOL. Friendly Staff assist with your selections, still no apple pie (got to be early for best selections). Wife walked out with a coffee (very good), a blueberry pie, and a slice of German Chocolate Cake. WOW- The German Chocolate Cake was absolutely AMAZING. We shared and I had to walk away as I was starting to get greedy. The Blueberry Pie was also very good (still working on it). Definitely one of the best Bakeries yet !!!

Visiting for Valentine's weekend and cane across this Beautiful German bakery very reasonably priced. Several employees working together and our attendant forgot a couple things but it all worked out she fixed the errors. All our food was fresh-I wasn't a big fan of the tuna sandwich, but the bacon egg cheese sandwich was delicious. Grabbed a couple pastries for later. Definitely worth a try!!

This place is awesome, such a wide variety of bread, sandwiches, and of course sweets. They have homemade fresh pies. The seating was plenty, with friendly staff. Just love how awesome this experience was. I will be back.

The Ruben sandwich here is AMAZING! Everything here is good, definitely worth the drive! We go every year after the Bark For Life event!

Me when it's Thursday and it's closed. I get so mad. This place needs to be open on Thursdays in summer so I can go during farmers market

Best place in all of Tehachapi. This FREAKIIINGGG bakery is so absolutely peak if I were to die it would be because I ate too many of the lemon bars here. Their pastries are so amazing. And every time it hits an o'clock there's little doll things that sing that peak song in sound of music. You can get your pastries really fast because they're right there in front of you when you walk in and e nice workers will hand it to you. I've rarely ever had problems with the people here. ANNMDDD THERES A PLACE TO EAT UNDER THE STAIRS THAT I CALL THE HARRY POTTER SPOT. ITS MYYYUY SPOT!

This was my first time stopping by Kohnen's on our way to Yosemite NP. We wanted a sandwich and pastry and this was the perfect place to get them. The location was super easy to find and the bakery is part of the Tehachapi Train Depot Museum. Which would make it ideal if you have little ones. The employees were very friendly and the ambiance was laid back. We tried the Cubano and the Reuben sandwich and both were so delicious. The sandwiches were loaded with super tasty meats. I especially loved the Reuben because of all the sauce and sour kraut. Before I forget, let me mention that the sandwiches come with a small bag of chips which I wasn't paying attention and ended up buying a bag of chips. Now to the pastry's, OMG the carrot cake! Kohnen's carrot cake is one of the best carrot cakes I've had. From the frosting to the two layers of deliciousness. I bought one to eat there and one to go. I also tried their cheesecake and oh boy, I'm a fan! Will definitely be stopping by here every time I come to Yosemite.

We stopped by this bakery on our way to Mojave to have lunch. I ordered a turkey sandwich, chocolate croissant and almond croissant for later. My friends ordered a tuna melt and ham sandwich. Everything came out fast and I have to tell you it is so hard to pick what I want to try when I visit this place. Everything looks delicious. The service is fast and friendly, they answered my questions with a smile. We chose to eat outside today because it was such nice weather. Their outdoor seating is perfect and shaded. I adore this place.

What a fun bakery and sandwich shop! Everyone was so nice and the food was so good! Big portions and very reasonable! It's not by accident they're so busy all the time! If you are driving by, you have to stop and get some highway treats!

Ask the Community - Kohnen's Country Bakery

Do you have German crumb cake? Its's similar to a Beehive coffee cake. We lived in Germany for 4 years and I miss it so much. I can't find anything like it.

I'm not sure if Bienenstich is the same as Bee Hive cake. We used to make it years ago, but it didn't sell well with our mostly American Customers. Because it was a lot of work, we decided to stop making it due to low sales. So sorry.

    Why are you closed?

We are not closed. Our hours are 6am-6pm Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. Closed Wednesday and Thursday. 6am-6pm Friday and Saturday.

Do they serve sandwiches around 4:00?

The serve cold sandwiches after 4, they dont serve hot after 4 like the Reuben.

Has anyone had the peanut butter cookies here, been craving a good peanut butter cookie like the one at Disneyland but don't want to drive to LA, thank you?

I loved their peanut butter cookie. Have not been to Disneyland. What is great about this bakery it is a true bakery and everything we had was amazing,

When I tried speaking German, the lady said she didn't remember much of the language anymore. This blunt, "tell it like it is" way of interacting is pretty much how my family used to be, so I found it familiar -- even comforting. But it's easy to see how this can rub people the wrong way, especially if they're used to American (or even modern German) - style customer service. Everyone who found this rude is making reasonable statements. But to me this is more a case of people who have been doing the same thing for a long time without making updates. Decor-wise, place also seems to recreating the Germany that someone remembers from decades ago. The blue and white bunting, the beer steins, the picture of the Pope and other memorabilia make the place feel distinctly Bavarian, in a touristy way. A lot of places in Germany, even in the more traditional south have moved on. But my hope is that this place does continue until the proprietors retire with dignity or sell the business to some German-Americans with a passion for prepping and selling this type of food.

We were daunted by the 1.5 hr drive to where we were staying and hoped that eating closer would save some time later. It did! Rasselbock is a bit hidden away but we found it with street metered parking nearby. We had arranged for a reservation but we hardly needed it. The place was mostly empty when we arrived. Music was thumping, and not German music. It was classic rock but a touch too loud. So keep that in mind. I appreciated that they had Erdinger beer. That's some of the best beer around. I chose the non alcoholic since I had a drive ahead. I was told it might not be cold enough and the server brought me the bottle to sample it by touch. I cheerfully noted Germans don't drink very cold beer and it was fine. My wife and I ordered schnitzels, she chicken and I pork. She had the Oma's potato salad - which with mustard and mayo really would not have passed muster with a real Oma like mine. She reported it was good anyway. I had spaetzle and cucumber dill salad. The kids both had a bratwurst, salad and fries. On the whole the schnitzels were good. Not entirely authentic but USA-good enough. I'd say the same for my spaetzle and salad. One kid liked the bratwurst, one didn't. I found what I tried of the sausage to be pretty good. The stone ground mustard was particularly good. Service was a little slow to start but the food came quickly and we were off. A 4.2 rounds to a flat 4. German food is hard to come by anywhere, so I welcome it. Especially with a good selection of beer. They serve multiple sizes included a liter "mass." Sounds great but I think those days are behind me. Definitely worth a try.

That would mean that all others would need to get up twice - for me to get a water. I understand that particularly during the World Cup, they do not need my/ our business. Thankfully, there are many options. I wow to never return.

Would you expect a small market to pack a punch with good beer and German food? No? Well, try…read moreGeorge's Market and find out The Reuben sandwich with warm german potato salad was a banger. Meat was juicy, sauce is plentiful, and it all conglomerates into a messy sandwich of deliciousness. Sausages are the other star here. The Spicy Hungarian sausage with mustard was absolutely a banger as well. It's a nice light kick and savory flavor with each bite. We finished off with a Cherry strudel which was not too sweet but still had the nice sugary finish of a dessert. I feel like I'm rambling but long story short, great food, great beer, great time. Have a slice of European cuisine out in Calimesa.

The Reuben and potato salad combo was especially hearty and satisfying, with rich, savory flavors that felt very true to a classic deli experience. The Hungarian sausage had a great depth of flavor, savory and well-seasoned without tipping into being overly salty. The cherry strudel was a standout to end the meal, filled generously with cherries and syrup, wrapped in a flaky pastry that balanced sweetness and texture really well. The beer tied everything together nicely, cold and refreshing, and exactly what you'd want with this kind of meal. I still prefer Busy Bees in San Pedro, but this was a nice alternative within the IE area. Price: George's Market falls into a casual, reasonable deli pricing tier. Sandwiches like the Reuben and similar deli items are generally in the mid‑teens range, while sausage plates and hot meals can push closer to around $15-20 depending on what you get. Beer and imported items vary, but overall you can expect to spend about $15-25 per person for a solid, filling meal. Given the quality, portion sizes, and specialty nature of the food, the pricing feels fair. Ambiance: The space is part cozy German market, part deli counter, with a warm, wood-heavy interior that feels inviting and a bit nostalgic. There's both indoor seating and an outdoor area, giving flexibility depending on the weather or how busy it is. Beyond the dining area, the market itself sells a wide range of German groceries and specialty products, which adds to the charm and makes it feel like more of an experience than just a quick meal. Service: Service was good and impressively efficient given how busy it gets. There was a noticeable line when we went (especially on a weekend lunch time), but things moved steadily and the staff kept everything organized without feeling rushed or chaotic. Friendly and straightforward overall. Parking: Parking is one of the easier parts of the visit. It's located in a plaza with a large shared lot, so there's plenty of space and no real hassle finding a spot, even during peak hours.
