I have always been a fan of here for years and always finished my visit to friends with a detour to pick up a box of 24 oatmeal raisin cookies, for my journey home. Being back in the area i was excited to be a regular again, but may be post pandemic but things have changed and food quality seems to be lacking. The grab and go turkey rolls used to be great, but this time the execution was poor and with a heavy handed amount of mustard made a soggy and unpleasant mess. What really highlighted low quality ingredients was the ham and cheese croissants. I always remembered quality cheese and ham, instead now it appears kraft glow in the dark singles, even the dogs found it tough to eat, as basically turned into dog snack. Sad when a firm favorite appears to change direction to maybe save money but the inconsistencies have changed me from a daily regular into an infrequent guest who shops cautiously which was never the case. Soups were always consistently good, but now are hit and miss! The roasted veg had a heavy base of frozen cubed veg which again seemed what previously would be off brand. The owner still has one the best smiles but it appears that a lot of love is missing from the products. Hopefully the post pandemic adjustments allow for the former consistently excellent products to be a guarantee per purchase to return as the norm and not the exception! read more

This place is well known to the locals and people who love pastries lol. Or you work for the railroad. My boss told me about this place. If you have a sweet tooth this is the place for you. The have delicious cinnamon rolls and mouth watering pies. I didn't take pictures because the pastries don't usually last to kind. This bakery is super amazing and has so yummy goods it's hard just to pick one. The mini pies are amazing and such a great sinful treat. The breads are all amazing and it's hard to pick a favorite. The cookies are great and I especially love the sugar cookies. It's always busy here but the staff are amazing. We had such a nice lunch and treat here. You can build your sandwich or choose some of their specials. The sandwiches are served with a pickle and small bag of Lays. I had a turkey sandwich on Shepherders bread and could have easily shared it. The kids got cookies and my husband and I had an eclair. The eclair was absolutely delicious! In love with all the pastries here. I was out here visiting and I had the morning to myself. I have been wanting to check out this place for quite some time now and the best time to do that is while my partner is working, I get to enjoy some good oh breakfast and pastries here. Because it was my first time, I ordered a box full of things but to share with my sister in law of course. I also bought some bottle drinks to go and one of my partner favorite thing to eat here. I wish I remembered what I got. This is why I shouldn't wait so long to write a review. Lol. 5 stars for the German chocolate cake! Very tasty not too sweet, spongy cake and walnuts and coconut very authentic. 1 star for Tiramisu. AVOID tiramisu it's bad too much cream and there is no coffee/espresso taste and the lady fingers (bread like cake) it's practically not there. You can see in the picture all the cream I removed it's too much German bakery don't make Italian desserts unless you make it authentic. read more

Such a gem in the city of Tehachapi. I did not know what to expect and did not order any of their sandwiches but I was pleasantly surprised with the pastries we took home! There were so many different treats to choose from so we went with a NY Cheesecake, a lemon bar, a cheese danish, a brownie and some cookies. We'll hellllooooo sugar! I'm not complaining! The service was great. Except we ordered the Poor Boy Sandwich for sharing as it's for two persons. The meat cheese and topping were delicious but the bread was hard. The person who made it should have said something to us. We couldn't bite into the bread. They should have offered us a different kind of bread. They are close Wednesday and Thursday so they must not make fresh bread daily, we were there Tuesday afternoon. We should have spoken up about the hard bread but did not. We chose to bring the rest of the sandwich home to place into our own fresh bread slices. We have gone to this place many times for the pastries but that was the first time for a sandwich. read more

I have only recently became aware of this gem and already I have been there twice, anytime I am in Tehachapi or driving by I will make it a point to stop in as there are so many things that I want to try. The pastries that I have tried thus far where absolutely amazing. Yesterday a group of friends and I stopped in about 10 minutes before closing. They had pretzels samples that where delicious!. The eclairs are amazing they are well worth the price they are the size of most burritos! The cream puffs are the size of a large apple. The cheese cake are as good as you'll have on the west coast. The German chocolate cake and carrot cake with cream cheese frosting are sold in a healthy slice that can easily be shared with two people. read more

I loooove this place! My boyfriend and I stopped here for lunch before going on a big hike and man was it amazing! We both got sandwiches which are huge! The bread is fantastic. I got a turkey sandwich with sprouts on sourdough(sourdough only available on Tuesday and Saturdays) and loved it. My boyfriend got roast beef on rye. We also ordered a raspberry cheesecake. Everything was delicious and the atmosphere of the place is so charming and cute. You can buy entire loaves of their fresh baked bread and they are reasonably priced! I stopped by here twice during my recent stay in Tehachapi. First was to grab breakfast - a cinnamon roll. Everything looked so good that I added a cranberry scone & a few oatmeal raisin cookies for later. Well, the cinnamon roll was scrumptious and more than enough to fill me up. The scone was delicious and so rich I could only finish half. But let me tell you about the oatmeal raisin cookies - WOW. We're talking heaven level good. I had to get more of those cookies, so I stopped on my way out of town for another 1/2 dozen, and I added a piece of German chocolate cake and an apple coffee cake to take home. I can tell you that my husband, who loves German chocolate cake, was absolutely delighted with this one. The coffee cake was so good we're planning to return to try their other flavors. The cookies? They're MINE - I'm not sharing them with hubs or anyone else. Pure heaven. The bakery itself is large and there's plenty of seating inside and out. Very decorative and items for sale along the wall behind the displays. Oh, those displays - try not to come on an empty stomach or you WILL overspend. The ladies who served me on both occasions were very helpful and kind. They have a nice sized parking lot, so no drama there. read more

What a gem. Good food, good atmosphere. This little bakery makes delicious soups, sandwichesX and pastries. We were visiting friends and they suggested this place and I'm glad they did! Everything tasted delicious. We got hot and cold sandwiches, soup, and a ton of pasties. The bread is delicious and everything tasted fresh and decadent. They offer both sweet and savory pastries and some German ones which was fun! Also, even though they're German, that tiramisu is so good! So creamy and the flavor of the espresso really comes through. My family ate through all of our goodies the same night we got them! Have I been living under a rock? I had no idea that this well known bakery in Tehachapi existed. My friend and I were on a drive up to National Cemetery when we decided to take the extra 15-20 minutes up towards Tehachapi. She mentioned something about some famous zucchini bread. Still, in my head...not that exciting. But once we arrived...it was if the Heavens opened up! And if you know me, I am a total dessert snob. You won't see me opening up a bag of Oreos. So when I saw that this was a unique German bakery, my heart was happy! So many amazing options from lemon bars (my weakness), granola raspberry bars, raspberry cheesecake and huge cherry turnovers fresh out of the oven. Where do I start with this place, and why can't I give them 10 stars?? Kohnen's has become one of our favorite places to eat, and quite often we make a special trip from Bakersfield to have lunch. Yes, it's THAT good!! My son loves the turkey sandwich, and both my wife and I are addicted to the Rubien. They stack it high with pastrami, sauerkraut, and swiss cheese on homemade German rye bread, and it's huge, so you can easily get two meals out of it. This brings me to the homemade bread. Most of the time, we have to bring back a loaf of German rye or sourdough... sometimes both. And it's perfect to freeze! The homemade pastries are on another level. It's easy to spend money in this place because you want to try everything. The pretzels are fantastic, but our other favorites are the lemon bars, cinnamon crisps, eclairs, and the Nuss Ecken, which is UNBELIEVABLE!! It can get busy inside, but even with the place packed, Kohnen's manages to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere that feels like you're in Germany. You can feel the love they have for their customers through the owners and their employees. Thomas gets up early every morning to create these amazing baked goods, and Colleen greets every customer with a warm smile, no matter how busy they are. Plus, she's kind enough to keep my favorite German beer in stock, that up until I set foot in Kohnen's, I hadn't seen since I was in Germany back in the late 1980s. This place has great reviews and I was excited to support a local business when I was passing through today. The pastries looked great this morning, and the staff were friendly. And they have signs up saying that they are observing COVID-19 safety protocols and requiring masks for entry. But unfortunately, they were not enforcing this -- some of the staff were not wearing masks. And there also were customers without masks in the store, too. So, disappointingly, I had to go elsewhere for food -- it did not feel safe to stick around long enough to buy breakfast. No pastry is worth risking my life for. If they come into compliance with county health department COVID-19 regulations, I'd love to check out this place again. But safety first, so, not today. read more

Took a day trip to Tehachapi a couple weeks ago and decided to stop in here for a picnic sandwich and some treats to take back to LA. We decided on the poor boy since it said it is a sammy that serves 2. When they handed the bag to my boyfriend he said it was as heavy as a small child! This thing could really serve 4! A couple of these would be great for your superbowl party! It was so full of meat and cheese and was delish. We also got a peanut butter cookie, a giant macaroon, and a mini cheesecake. During our last visit, we notice they are selling a gluten free bread. My wife has food allergies, Gluten, Dairy and Whey. For years we always stop in and we would grab a sandwich. But my wife developed food allergies, Gluten, Dairy and Whey. For the last six years, I would grab a sandwich and she would pack a lunch bag. But during our last visit, our jaw dropped when we'd noticed the gluten free bread they are now selling. We purchased a loaf and they made a sandwich. She had happy tears.
