This is our 2nd trip out to Tehachapi, CA from the LA area. Out first experience was great however this time around I will have to honestly give a thumbs down (explaining my 3 star rating). The food (sandwiches ) were excellent however, we found the owner (Colleen?) To be quite rude and condescending! FYI... if you want to correct or train one of your employees, please have the common courtesy and NOT do it in front of customers !! Not only is that an embarrassment to your employees but it is also uncomfortable to your customers! I was also asking a question to one of your employees about one of your pastries and drinks and you rudely interrupted! I was not directing my question to you! As you are the business owner, you must understand that it is customers that keep you in business and without customers, you will have NO business! Therefore my advice is the next time, be a little nicer and welcoming to customers (both in your own community and those visiting outside of Tehachapi). I will also gladly post this very same review on Yelp so others that come into your bakery/cafe will be informed. I have to mentioned the name of one your employees as I close this review. John was so kind and answered our questions and his customer service was impeccable! Perhaps (Colleen the owner) you can get a few tips of "excellent customer service skills" from this gentleman! I heart Kohnen's. I stop at this bakery anytime I am in Tehachapi. It is located in "Old Town" on Tehachapi Blvd, just down the road from the Railroad Museum. Upon entrance, you enter a line where you put in your order. You get to gaze at all the baked goodies while they take your order. Since it is a bakery, I recommend a lot of their baked goods. The Bierock is a great snack, a cabbage and meat filled bun. It comes alive with the German musters they serve. The chocolate espresso cookie is moist and dark. The chocolate croissant has a nice flaky dough but could use more chocolate filling. My favorite thing to get is the eclair- it is a soft dough covered with chocolate and filled with a rich custard pudding filling. I dislike whipped cream filled eclairs so this is perfect to me. Their Reuben is fantastic, again with the mustard. The hot Cuban sandwich is delicious as well. Water is self-serve. Free refills on ice tea but not on the Arnold Palmers. There is a giant chalkboard for anyone to write and play with as you are waiting for your food. Once you're done eating, see if you can catch a train passing by on the neighboring tracks. read more

To this day, I'm not really sure I understand Tehachapi, a town seemingly in the middle of nowhere, with a gigantic state prison inside, but if you're passing through, it's entirely worth a pit stop in Kohnen's Country Bakery. I stopped in for lunch while on business and got a sandwich plus roasted pepper soup, and a boysenberry pie (free with my Yelp check-in). The sandwich was really yummy (alfalfa sprouts were a welcome addition), and the soup was absolutely delicious. The star, however, was definitely the pie-- flaky crust, moist center... and generous portion. So good in fact, I returned the following day to try an apple pie... mmm mmm good. The seating area inside are these no-frill picnic tables which I loved. Really felt like I could lounge out and enjoy my food. Outdoor seating was great as well. It pains me that Kohnen's is so far away, in a town I'd prefer never to visit again. I haven't given 5 stars in a long time, but Kohnen's absolutely deserves it. We stopped in because I had this craving for pie. They had some adorable individual pies but the only two remaining weren't flavors I was interested so we moved on down the enticing pastry case to the selection of small cheesecakes... they looked awesome. We decided on the cheesecake topped with brownies - yes! It was really good and made for a perfect late night dessert. The girlfriend stops by Kohnen's frequently for breakfast and lunch and is a big fan. I can see that if I lived in Tehachapi, I would probably be a regular here as well. Service was a bit off... it was like the woman at the counter just didn't understand a thing I was saying. But that cheesecake was worth it. There is a rather serious problem with Tehachapi businesses not being able to figure out the website thing. This isn't new technology and I really can't understand why most restaurants/businesses in town either don't have a site or have a non-functioning or useless site. Kohnen's is in the second category. If you were a web designer in Tehachapi, I feel like you could clean up. Or not. Just a random aside. Back to the review... this place seems to be busy a lot but there is ample indoor and outdoor seating (saw several dogs on the outdoor patio area which I LOVE). This is probably your best bet for breakfast or lunch in Tehachapi. Be a little patient and think of the cheesecake reward. read more

They've got the meats! If you are in need of a satisfying sandwich try the poor boy for two. Three kinds of meat and three kinds of cheeses with your basic sandwich toppings on a giant shepherd roll. They also have a lot of baked goods from all types of breads to cookies, strudels and my favorite the eclair. It is filled with custardy goodness and topped with a chocolate ganache. It was delicious! Great atmosphere and decor. Will definitely stop by again if I'm ever in this town again. Wish there was a store similar in my hometown. read more

This German bakery is without a doubt one of the best bakeries I have ever eaten in. I had the best jalapeño bagel and cream cheese I have ever eaten. It was amazing. I tried what everybody else was having and it was also amazing. It all looked as good as it tasted. I'm going back before I head back home to bring all kinds of treats home for my friends to see what I'm talking about. We do not have a bakery of this caliber in San Diego or East County. My wife has a perfect deli sandwich, and often the soup of the day. The quality of the sandwich and soup is always perfect. The desserts are over the top, and always delectable. I'm in love with this place. L-O-V-E LOVE! The decor is adorable, the people who work there were wonderful, and the baked items are fabulous! My mom and I dropped in on a recent visit to Tehachapi in to check out their desserts. We ordered a boysenberry danish and a gingersnap cookie which we split while sitting outside on the deck/patio and enjoying the sunshine and temperate weather. The lady who took our order cut the danish in half for us to make it easier to share, and even asked us if we wanted it on separate plates! (So thoughtful of her to offer) The danish was very pleasant. The pastry was flaky and not at all greasy or soggy in the middle where the cheese and berry filling was piled. The berries were big and juicy and bursting with flavor. The gingersnap was the size of a large sugar cookie and contained enough ginger to give it a little zing. It was the perfect texture, not too gooey, nor did it crumble too easily - just right. It was also covered with sugar (possibly a cinnamon or spice mixed in with it. I enjoyed each piece as I broke it off. I also ordered a tiramisu to take home with me. I have since dipped my fork into it numerous times and have been no more disappointed with it than with anything else we ordered. Creamy mascarpone, earthy cocoa, a slight bite from the coffee, spongy ladyfingers - I'm in heaven. Kohnen's has a Yelp check in deal where you get a free loaf of bread (only available once) This was the best part of the whole deal. I chose a loaf of Sechskorn which is a six grain bread with a hearty texture and nutty flavor. It's not the first time I've eaten their sechskorn, but it's the first time I've had an entire loaf on my own. Last weekend my stepfather visited Kohnen's and brought back loaves of sechskorn, whole wheat, cheese, and sheepherder's bread. He gave me a couple slices of each to take home, and I fell in LOVE with this bakery. I don't know how often I'll be able to make it up the mountain, but I'll be definitely be putting in my order every time he is headed up here. Who knows, maybe I'll have to make a trip up here to try their cheesecakes, or the harvest loaves. This place has the best "Cuban" sandwich I've ever had outside a real Cuban restaurant. (Let me pause for a moment and wipe up the drool.) I'm not sure sesame seed bread is real authentic, but, WOW! What a sandwich. For those ignorant, a cuban involves ham, roast pork, cheese, sliced pickles, mustard, and a roll that is smushed under something heavy and hot. Anyway, their sandwiches are incredible. Can't miss with those! The sweets are reallly sweet, so make sure you get some tea or coffee that's not so sweet. The brownie would be delicious without the icing -- with -- it's off the charts. Almond anything -- yummo! Lemon bars.. (excuse me, more drool). I can't believe I didn't review this place...I have been here a few times over the past few months. It is a cute German bakery rounding out the nice variety of places to eat Tehachapi has for such a small town. They have fresh baked bread and will have seasonal soups made fresh every day but get them early before they run out. I have gotten a variety of cookies before to use as a bribe and it worked! They also have a huge sandwich that I have never tried called the Poor Boy but it is meant for 2 people so I never got it. I have gotten their saladwich which I enjoyed, it is a bit pricey but they had some good quality ingredients in it. I also tried a small roll that they heat up which has sauerkraut and meat in it but I forget what it is called...that's not to bad for a snack. They will also have free samples out for you to munch on when you decide what you want, I recommend calling your order in ahead of time so you don't have to wait for like 10 minutes to get it. read more

After a ride on the Lehigh trails, I was starving, my buddy recommended this place to try. Well I pull up and there is plenty of parking in the lot next to them. Ordering is simple, there is a menu on a counter and you just check off what you want. Very simple and efficient. When you are waiting in line to pay for the meal, they have a glass case full of cakes, cookies and pastries. So tempting to order one of everything. I ordered a roast beef on sheepherder bread(my favorite if I can find it). The sandwich was huge. Two people could easily share this. But of course I ate the whole thing. I also had an Arnold Palmer in a Mason jar. Everything was great. I really didn't get a chance to look around, but the theme is German, and since my mom is German I know she would love this place. Need to bring the family up for a lunch road trip. Noticed that they have quite a few breads and when there out of something, they're out for the day. aww, this place stole a tiny part of my heart. The part that was hungry and had slim pickins on restaruants in a teeny tiny strip of a town. I loved the smell of fresh bread baking and their "no frills" service. I especially loved giving the locals a run for their money during their lunch break when we came rollin in with like 30 people on a Thursday lol! I just love their sandwiches, they are a German bakery so all their bread is fresh. I typically get a turkey sandwich, sometimes I go for the Bierock and soup. The people that work there are always very nice. Take in mind this place gets super busy, and I always see groups of tourists, so go before the rush. The feel is comfortable and grandmas house cosy. They have some great German beers too. Lots of stuff to look at. We will typically grab a loaf or two of their bread, sometimes a pastry, and take em home. I got a free peanut butter chocolate chunk cookie from yelp! It had a nice bold peanut butter flavor with big chunks of chocolate. The cookie was nice and chewy in the middle part with a more flaky crust area. Delicious. I took an order slip and filled out what I wanted on my sandwich. They have a selection of breads to choose from. I got a sandwich with the 6 grain bread with mustard, turkey, lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers. It was about 8 dollars, which was kinda expensive. When I went to get my sandwich, it came witha free bag of chips! Sweet. I unwrapped the sandwich and boom. Free pickle. But it was a sweet pickle which made me a little sad. My friend lives in Merced, CA and we decided Tehachapi, CA was pretty close to mid-point for us to meet up for lunch. A quick look at Yelp and we decided Kohnen's was the perfect place to meet, especially since they have a very dog friendly patio. Ok, since I do not live in this area, I am completely taking a touristic point of view on my review (so I hope I do not offend the locals). This town is ADORABLE!!! 90% of it has been restored to it's old glory days and it's just fun to come to. Then as I was parking to go to the bakery, I realized it is RIGHT next to the train tracks. I love watching trains. The cargo trains kept coming through too, so had loads of fun watching them. The bakery itself is a large open friendly place. There are a variety of places and types of seating. It's a miss mosh that just works. The staff is warm and friendly. Everyone was quick to help with choices, and even though it looked like a line of people waiting to get served, it went very fast. The time of day we were there was hot and sunny and we were lucky we snagged the only shady spot on the patio. The dogs loved the shade and the HUGE water bowl nearby that was constantly being filled with fresh cool water. There were 3 of us and we all ordered different sandwiches, since they are design your own, I won't bore you with the minutia. Generally you have 10 types of breads to choose from, meats, cheeses and veggies, etc. All 3 of us LOVED our sandwiches, none of us ate more than half a sandwich. They are big and loaded with delicious fresh ingredients. Of course we stayed for quite a while catching up on all our news, so we had time and space (by then) for some desserts. If we thought the sandwiches were good, HELLO SWEETS. It is a bakery after all, and their cheesecake, tiramisu and cinnamon crisp was ON POINT. So yummy. This bakery is adorable! It's all German country themed inside, and they stay true to their theme. It's a little bit busy on the eyes, kind of a lot going on, but I think maybe that is what they are going for. Against one wall is a giant chalk board that I'm guessing they have up for children to draw on while they wait for food. We didn't sit down to eat, we just brought pastries home. They have some cute bottled sodas, which I really like, like the sarsparilla and a guava soda. When we went in on the afternoon of the farmer's market in town, they didn't have much left in the way of whole cakes or large desserts, just a lot of individual stuff, so that was a little disappointing. We probably would have bought a large chocolate cake or something like that if they'd had it, but they just had a few fruit pies. We got a slice of carrot cake, a chocolate cheesecake, and a cream puff. The cream puff was amazing. So delicious. read more
