Wanted to try some place different so we popped in here and ordered a Poor Boy to go. All of the reviews on this say it will feed two people... It does, twice! It's cut into 4 pieces and my hubby and I each had one piece each and lunch for the next day! It also comes with two bags of chips for about $15. Ordered and got all the way home (25 min drive) and was not given the right sandwich. I'm vegetarian and ordered a salad sandwich and there was meat on it and the wrong cheese. I called and talked with someone and they told me to come in and get a remake. No biggie I appreciate the offer of it being remade. When I got there I'm assuming the manager (curly blonde / reddish hair) instantly copped attitude with me and basically accused me of lying about speaking with someone. I never got the persons name of who I spoke to so I pulled up my call log to prove to her that I spoke to someone. And for $12 I'm going to get what I paid for. She was insanely rude and not inviting whatsoever. It basically killed her time make the moment right. They also have items in the menu that they no longer serve! I was told they don't make the kind of bread I ordered anymore as if I was suppose to know. Such a shame. I've lived here 13 years and have fond memories going to lunch with my grandparents there. Really sad that now that I'm an adult I get treated so poorly. A little bit of advice! Don't accuse customers of lying and definitely don't put your hand in the customers face to shush them when they're trying to prove they called when you're dismissing them. Very rude. Other than that, cool building, yummy deserts and the sandwiches I've had that are made accordingly have been great. That lady definitely put a bad taste. On the way back to the High Desert from Bakersfield, we decided to try something new in the area. Kohnen's Country Bakery popped up on yelp and looked pretty good. What really caught my eye was the bratwurst and poor boy sandwich. If you look at the pictures on yelp, it is totally BETTER in person! Beautiful, sunny, cool weather only enhanced the visit. It is a small little town but very clean, warm and friendly. Walking in there is a small counter bar of sorts with menus and order forms. Here you can pick your hot /cold sandwiches, the types of meats, cheeses or condiments to add or remove from your order (white form). Alongside those is a "green order form" and that is for salads and other small sides along with soups. They also have a soup of the day just ask when you go inside. They have fresh baked bread daily of all kinds as well as numerous desserts, pastries and confections. There is merchandise everywhere salt and peppered among the restaurant for purchase as well a small store next-door. We had a cheese danish, sugar cookies, lemon bars and the poor boy sandwich. This is a HUGE sandwich that can be easily shared between 2-3 people. I could only finish the first quarter and the hubby 2/3 of another piece. There is also a large blackboard as well in which the kids can draw pictures on while you wait for your salad or hot/cold food. The ladies who took our order were so warm and friendly. I wish I could give this place 5 stars but the service lacks just a little. My first experience was great but my return trip had a couple of flaws and I think these are due to the high volume of customers they have. The first problem was my sandwich. I got a turkey with avocado and it was fine except the inside was soaked in mustard. I like mustard but couldn't taste anything over it because there was so much. After telling my dinning mate this, we realized that the other sandwich in our order didn't have any though it was requested for the sandwich. So I assume they used the bread that had mustard for both sandwiches for mine instead of the two. The other thing was I ordered a pastry and did not receive it. I am not sure if I was charged for it but I was really looking forward to trying it. Their pastries are so delicious. I have tried just about every one of them and was satisfied with them all. The danishes are my personal favorite with the cheesecake a close second. The Poor Boy sandwich is AWESOME and almost big enough for three people it is so big. The place was not as good as advertised. The food was ok. None of employees was wearing a mask and way to crowded. Limited amount tables. We found one open table there was a big trash can full with trash by the table so I move it to a place away from customers. While waiting for the food a employee ( which was coughing the whole time) went to the trash can and move back beside us and didn't empty it. After we got our food she came back around and empty it. This is a German-themed bakery and deli that serves up sandwiches, pastries, and bread. It has a little gift shop on the side where you can buy postcards and tchotchkes from local artisans. My mother really liked this place while I thought it was just okay, which may be a generational difference. Where she found it charming, I found it a little kitschy. The deli and sandwiches are nothing to write home about. In fact, I think, other than the German bread, there was only one German thing on the menu, which was the bratwurst and sauerkraut. My mother had the bratwurst, and I had a roast beef sandwich on the Vollkorn bread. My mother raved about her meal; I felt that mine was ordinary. Plus, the meal preparation took over 20 minutes, and I couldn't figure out how it took that much time to slap some roast beef in between two slices of bread, especially since they weren't busy. The desserts, however, redeemed everything average about Kohnen's. They may not know deli, but they do know desserts. My son had the iced star cookie, I had the chocolate chip cookie, my mother had the lemon bar, and we took a brownie to go - all were DIVINE!!! That more than made up for their sandwich shortcomings.
