I know this bakery gets a lot of reviews. They have have a good reputation in Tehachapi why shouldn't they. Not because the community is limited on alternatives, it is because this place is of Blue Ribbon quality. Personally I come visit and get out quick because I would end up buying more wonderful home baked desserts than I need. I went here right after we moved to Tehachapi. I LOVE their ginger cookies--and pretty much their entire menu. I bought my husband a sandwich there--and never got a bite. Good selection of quality items but the blonde lady at the register at 2:35 on fri dec 29 will pretty much guarantee neither my gf or i will return here for baked goods and those lunch sandwhiches or continue recommending it to the new residents that move into the apartment complex my gf manages. She skipped us in line when it was our turn after waiting, and began to serve the woman behind us, my gf said excuse me and even the woman being served told her that we were here first. The bread is one of the most over looked components of a sandwich. If you want a great sandwich, gotta have great bread. Meats, cheeses, sauce and vegetables all are accompanied very well with this bakery's amazing bread. (The atmosphere is very well decorated ed, be sure to visit on the hour to see the cuckoo clock in action.) my only note is that they need to do some high dusting on that particular cuckoo clock. But minor details aside, this is a great place to stop by and come back again and again. As a note to myself and for those planning on coming in save some room for dessert too! read more

As you enter pick up the paper menu and select how you would like your sandwich or salad made. Then turn it in to one of the very friendly staff and go find a seat in the roomy dining area or outside on one of the many tables on the patio. There is a water station as well as a coffee station and the drinks are at the register, bottles only no soda fountain. If you aren't a big eater you may want to share a sandwich as they are really substantial and maybe add one of the delicious soups they offer. If you sit inside there is plenty of German items in cases and on the walls to keep you entertained for quite awhile and a large blackboard wall that will keep the kiddies busy. Hands down the best bakery I've ever been to in my life!!!! They aren't kidding when they said they make the best white bread in town! My husband and I bought a loaf( and they slice them for you) it was amazing!!! I could spend all day raving about the things I've tried here! The tiramisu is to die for! Wow! I'm pretty impressed.. I've been working in the area on and off for the past month and decided to give this place a try and they definitely did not disappoint. I built a sandwich using the cheese bread and I love the think cut of the bread. They also give really good meat portions. It's a pretty decent sized sandwich, and the bread was really soft with that crispy crust that I like. My coworker bought two whole breads as well, the sheapherder and sour dough, and they both tasted really good that I went back in and bought my own. Great place if your kind of a newbie to baking. However if you have a refined sense of taste you will recognize the lackluster presentation.

My review is based on service not the pastries or food. We go to Tehachapi often for hiking and friends who live in town. We like to walk the downtown area and stop in usually for a treat before we head out. My 5 yr old son really wanted a donut and my other kids wanted pastries from Kohnen's. We went to dunkin first but they had closed down. So we went to Kohnen's and I asked the lady behind the counter if they had anything that was "like" a donut. She rudely replied that this is a pastry shop not a donut shop. But the WAY she said it was the worst. I told her I'm aware that this place isn't a donut shop that's why I asked for anything "like" that. Maybe a cinnamon roll or idk... or just say, I'm sorry We don't but maybe he might like this. One of the best places to dine in tehachapi. The quality ingredients used in the making of the food, the availability of the variety of the drinks, the friendly staff, the consistency of the quality and the atmosphere above all provides a great experience. The soups are always great tasting too. I have been going to the restaurant at least twice a week. Fresh cold water is always available on their condiment table. The restaurant is always clean and the staff is always courteous and considerate of children too. There is a chalkboard wall that keeps kids and even some adults entertained. The bread is beyond great, and closely rivals Earth Caffe in Santa Monica. I just have not been a fan of their cabbage and meat role. In my opinion it needs more salt and spices but I do like my food on a salty side. read more
