I usually love Kohnen's. I don't visit often, but today I wanted a grilled cheese sandwich. I ordered one from the kids menu. Very disappointed. It was about a .5 thick. It looked like it was smashed down. Come on; your a bread bakery. Slice the bed a little thicker. At least make it look gourmet. For 5.00, I expected more. Furthermore, the young lady that helped me wasn't very pleasant. Nevertheless, I will visit again. I'll just order something else. read more

We had such amazing memories of the food here that we routed our return from CA to swing through Tehachapi. Everything still looks amazing, but the lady who packaged our food didn't change her single glove between rearranging inventory, grabbing the food by touching it directly, and taking our cash with the same glove. When that glove didn't come off after the transaction either, we realized there was no way of knowing how many prior transactions were deposited on our bierocks. So disappointed. read more

If you are ever in Tehachapi this bakery is a MUST-try. Both the prices and food are amazing, especially their savory bier rocks (bread buns stuffed with various ingredients). I've tried their cookies, which aren't off-the-charts amazing, but 85 cents for a good-sized iced cookie can't be beat. I also tried 3 of their bier rocks: veggie & egg, beef & cabbage, and pizza. All 3 of them are so delicious but I think the veggie and egg was my favorite. Their PIES...divine. They've also got mini pies, if you don't want a whole one to yourself. I tried the mini peach pie and the mini caramel apple pie, which was my favorite. Their caramel apple bar is just as good and easier to eat, if you're not a pie person. They also have huge sandwiches. Our group tried a hot pastrami and a gigantic sandwich cut into four (I forgot the name). Again, the prices are so good for the quality food and I'll definitely be stopping by here any and every time I visit Tehachapi! It's in a small town so it's usually not that crowded. If in Tehachapi I highly recommend stopping her for a bite to eat. Maybe a nice deli sandwich or a bakery item, either way you can't go wrong! Clean business with good staff and great things to eat. It's busy at your normal times, but they do a good job of keeping things moving. I went in just to look today but a sweet craving hit me as soon as I stepped inside. 3 stars for ambience, good prices, and kind employees. We chose a cheesecake and eclair. The cheesecake tasted chalky, maybe because it's not fresh? The pastry paper it was sitting on (not the one visible in picture) was nearly glued to the bottom half and was a pain to peel off completely, kept coming away in tiny pieces. I'm all for not overly sweet desserts but this lacked flavor too. We ate half and I doubt any of us will bet the other half for later. The eclair was good, soft with a slightly firm chocolate frosting. The cream inside wasn't overpowering. We stopped in on our way to Vegas. I'm always happy to try a local bakery but I can't say it's a place I wish I had 5 minutes down the road to come to. The breads looked beautiful! read more

When in Tehachapi, stop by this place! I love the cream puffs. They are huge and to my surprise they make minis now. Good for a little fix of whipped cream. My neices and nephew all got cookies. I ended up getting a pizza loaf for dinner that night. We reheated it in the air fyer and it fit perfectly. It was so great. The bread on the inside was so soft and I liked that the air fyer made the cheese on the outside crispy. I think I will be stopping by for another pizza loaf next time we are in town read more

Apple Country has an Amazing German Bakery at Tehachapi Pass Heading to/from SW via US40 we always stop at Kohnen's Country Bakery. What an unexpected jewel at the top of the Pass. Opening @6am, just before our target to get on the road - note target v actual departure - we always pick up a variety of treats and essentials before we get on the road. This trip we rolled into town well before Kohnen's 6p closing time. We picked up Pizza Bread (house made marinara sauce, Monterey Jack cheese, & pepperoni), Nuss Ecken (almonds, apricot, chocolate dipped shortbread), German Pretzels (Twists or Sticks - as engineers we test both and recommend continued testing, yum), Coconut Macaroon, Bear Claw, Blueberry Lemon Pound cake, Spinach Feta croissant, and Cherry Cheesecake. What a party. Reading this list you might laugh but there is so much more to select from. There were no Bierocks but that is always the risk towards the end of the day at a good bakery. We usually pick up a loaf of Sheepherders bread (crusty exterior, soft center) & Sechskorn (6grain, nutty flavor). The loaves always last longer than expected in the arid area we go to. Pleasant surprise. In the past our sons have debated the merits of the 3 different flavors of Bierocks. We knuckled and wld get some of each. Sons were good sports and shared. On the Brot (German bread) we are certain, the Grau Brot, Vollken Brot, and Bauern Brot are the best. The astute reader will notice these are the 3 choices - yes they are all amazing, try each, esp the rye. No cookies this time, but we have enjoyed on multiple occasions Peanut Butter w & w/o Chocolate Chunks, Chocolate Chip w & w/o Espresso (yes the engineering preferred approach), Ginger Snaps, and Oatmeal Raisin. There are a couple more varieties we have not tried yet, our eyes are always big when we walk in. Sometimes the line might look long but it is organized and moves fast with multiple registers going. Truly just long enough a line to decide what to order. With long tables inside and a couple of tables outside, there is always seating. Staff is cheery, both in the mornings and evenings, and helpful in recommendations. read more

We stopped here on our way through town because of the good reviews. The sandwiches we had (tuna and Rueben) were good, the bread was also good on the sandwiches. We bought two chocolate eclairs and they were very good as well. The service was somewhat lacking, not too friendly and when we asked for to go containers she pointed to the counter and we were given flimsy paper plates and brown paper? The eclairs were put in a paper bag. By the time we walked a short distance to the car the moisture and grease from the sandwiches went through all the paper, luckily we had a plastic bag and cooler bag to put them in. Omg ! this place is amazing the minute you walk in. This was the first time we visited and we tried a sandwich and got a cheesecake for dessert. So....I'm a self proclaimed bread addict. I look forward to visiting Kohnen's Country Bakery every time we're even close to hi-way 58! This bakery is an absolute must. I always purchase an abundance of German bread here and it holds up very well in our freezer. Kohnen's sandwiches are made to order and prepared with high quality ingredients. They offer a marvelous array of imported German goods and beer. I usually pick-up l mustard and horseradish. Today we selected a couple of jars of local honey. In their sparkling clean display cases you'll find pastries and other delights. When you visit, try to come early. The lunch crowd can be a little intimidating. But still worth the visit! read more

Let me preface this with: I don't understand the hype of Kohnen's. Was it good? Yes. Is it knock your socks off amazing? No. Wish I could give 3.5 stars, as that would be my true rating. I did a build your own sandwich. It was packed with meat and cheese (stoked about that) and placed ever so nicely on cheese bread. Now I'm not saying I'm a bread aficionado, but I'm a bread aficionado. The cheese bread is good, but if I'm being honest, the cheese bread at Vons (yes, the supermarket) has better cheese bread. The sandwich comes with a bag of lays. For dessert (because you have to get some kind of dessert when visiting a bakery), a brownie. The brownie had frosting on it and reminded me of one of those hostess cakes with the chocolate and white swirl on top. Would I go back? Yes. Is it the beat bakery in the world? The sandwiches had a good amount of meat and cheese. We all agreed that these sandwiches were on our top three favorites of all time. There was quite a long line, but they have several staff members taking orders. The staff were friendly and helpful. There are tables to sit both inside and outside of the bakery. The bakery itself is heavily wooded with art of state parks. The bakery also has items to purchase like cards, cups, little gifts, and German beer. We plan to stop here again! Driving back from the desert, passed through and I was hungry, as well as my family. I ordered a sandwich with Turkey, Lettuce, Cheddar, Mayo, and Mustard with a pink lemonade. I got my food super quick and it was busy! I took one big bite into that sand-which and it was beyond delicious. I love how much turkey they put into my sand-which. This is a gathering place for locals and folks just swinging through town. You'll find everybody here, who will all agree it's incredible. There are so many pastries (I'm partial to the nut rolls or the cheese Danish), and the bierocks are amazing any time of day. This is another local spot we insist on bringing friends to. What a cute shop! Stopped by here from LV at 4:30 pm and we were still able to order the sandwiches. There are some pastries left but good thing we were able to still try some of the good ones. We also bought eclairs and lemon bar- not in the photo- cos we started devouring them lol. The cubano sandwich was good too lil bit salty probably due to the pickle but its fine. This was definitely worth a stop over. I recommend this place. Will try to go in the morning next time to catch the other pastries! read more
