Koi Palace Express has really gone downhill since it first opened. Portions are smaller now, especially the Hainan Chicken dish. The reason why I am giving this place 2 stars is a culmination of all my visits within the past year. I bit the bullet and wrote this review due to the poor customer service I received today. My family and I arrived at 2pm today and were seated immediately. We ordered 3 dishes but decided to add 2 more afterwards. We were warned by a waitress that the additional dishes we ordered would take 20 more minutes, but we decided to wait. As our first 3 dishes came out, we asked a waitress to check on our add-on dishes. She brushed our question aside and replied, "I already told you it would take awhile. The chefs are cooking it now." By the time we were finishing up the first 3 dishes, we asked another waitress about our add-on orders and she said, "Oh the kitchen is already closed. I guess I didn't put those dishes into the system." She then walked away, came back with a box for our leftovers and started wiping our table down with a dirty towel. She left the dirty towel on the table as she grabbed our tab. It smelled foul and at that point, I was so upset because she barely owned up to her mistake or apologized. Although the food was decent, the lack of respect from the waitresses makes me never want to come back again. Don't come here if you're expecting basic service from your servers. read more

This is the only place in the Dublin/Pleasanton area that makes authentic iced lemon tea and hong kong style milk tea (with condensed milk). They are open again and the main dishes remain to be fantastic. Highly recommend their hainan chicken rice (served with Chinese chicken soup) and baked pork chop with rice. Overpriced for what you get. Barely any meat with the combo meat on rice. Dumplings taste like the frozen dumplings you can buy from the grocery store. Shaolongbao is pretty good. Service is quick, classic Cantonese dishes that are tasty. The isn't anything over the top at the place. Truly upscale Chinese food doesn't exist in the United States, very good Chinese food does. This is one of those places that you can get Noodles, Soups and all the classic comfort dishes. Came here on a Saturday night and only waited a bit for a table. Ordered, the food came out quickly and the taste was excellent. Everything from the XLB, Saigon Cake, Noodles and Fried Rice was tasty. I want to like this place with my family more than 3 stars but they've consistently been above, average and below. It's main due to the fact that they've periodically change their chefs and once that happens, the expected food quality and style shifts dramatically and it's very noticeable once presented to the table or ordered to go. Occasionally the food is amazingly tasty and full of flavor then the next time becomes way too salty or has a faint sour smell to it. It's gotten to the point where if we don't have any other options or want to wait in line for other eateries in the plaza then it's a last resort kind of deal. We love this place their wanton noodles, Hai Nam chicken and pretty much everything are good quality!! Love the Macau pork belly!!! Cantonese cafe style plus a little bit of dim sum and more a easy lunch and dinner place not fancy. Everything we tried is good. Services is a causal place but they will bring food over and pour water and tea. So far each time I go they are friendly and food is delicious that's why we keep going there. Honestly, we used to love this place. The food itself isn't bad, but they're progressively getting cheaper (and I'm not talking about the price). My mom got the wonton noodle soup with roasted duck, and what she got was noodles she didn't order (everyone knows you gotta have those egg noodles with wonton noodle soup-- the ones she got were weirdly slimy and not good...) and 3 inedible and fatty pieces of duck, but they were sure to charge her extra for the duck! They're incredibly rude (I don't think the wait staff said more than 10 words to us) and they all seem to hate working here-- they all look perpetually angry. They made a mistake when billing us and treated us very rudely, demanding we pay extra. They apparently mixed up our bill with another table's. The bill we received had a higher value (which we paid), and they charged us a price that was about $3 lower. They then came over and demanded my mom give back some of the change (still fine, I guess) because they had given us ~$3 extra. She then demanded we give them another $5 for whatever reason - on top of the $5 tips we already had on the table - maybe to account for tips? The tips more than covered whatever amount they believed we owed. It took some time before they finally let me go. I'm very disappointed by the service and will definitely not be coming back. I felt like I was eating at a food court. It wasn't the Koi Express I used to go before Covid. First of all, all the furnitures were changed to cheap rectangular tables and set up was just like food court. Secondly, as we went inside, we were told we have to order ahead and pay first plus on top of it they will charge 18% service. The menu has shrunk so much now with limited items. To me it is a takeout menu. Thirdly, we noticed the price has tremendously increased. Also I felt a little disturbed, whilst trying to enjoy my dinner, the lady servers were talking very loud in the middle of the restaurant where the kitchen was which made me wonder why am I paying that money for the food and environment. I tried the shrimp wonton noodle soup. The broth was not bad but the shrimp was quite flavorful and not overly salty. The noodles were not overcooked and had the right amount of texture. Overall not a bad place to try. The restaurant decor was also interesting and the tables were one a kind. Give this place a shot. read more

I came here with my family on a Tuesday evening and there was no wait. The service staff was very attentive and kind, the ladies speak Cantonese and were very patient and polite to us. We ordered won ton noodle soup, stir fried shrimp & eggs, and baked rice with pork chop. The shrimp & eggs were very smooth and well seasoned, and the baked rice was very flavorful & had a good amount of meat. Much better than the baked rice at the nearby Snowflake. I visited around 8pm today with two friends and were quickly seated. After looking at the menu for five minutes, we decided what we wanted to order. We spent another five minutes trying to wave down a waitress to take our order. After ordering, the food came out pretty quickly, and the temperature was hot. This is my second time trying Koi Palace Express. I ordered the Four Treasure Rice plate for dinner couple nights ago, and it was not bad, but no great either. Being a Cantonese native and a knack for Cantonese dishes, I have fairly high standards on food being authentic. While I understand the limited authentic Cantonese places around, it still does not justify having a hard boiled egg as one of the four items on the rice. Nonetheless, it was a okay dinner. Service, however, was immaculate. I ordered my dinner to go, and the waitress greeted me with a big smile, apologized for the short wait, and handed my credit card back wth both hands and lower her back to thank me. This is what good service is about, something you don't find outside of fine dinning. The great service provided by the waitress convinced me to give it another try. So tonight I tried the one dish, if done right, I regard as the pinnacle of a great Cantonese restaurant - Hainan chicken. Having traveled the extra mile for this dish, I traveled across the US to various states such as New York, to Texas, Oregon and back here in California, in search of a good Hainan Chicken place. To provide some context, the one good place I have had is Savoy in LA, and that's it, and it wasn't spectacular, but just good. Now I ordered the dish, recognizing I shouldn't hold that high of a standard for Koi Palace Express, the chef may not even be the same as Koi Palace. When I go home and open the box, I was instantly lit, and not in a good way. The chicken fat rice with peanuts and sauce on the side resembles a form of Hainan Chicken, heck it even includes a bowl of ginseng chicken soup, fancy. The chicken, it's not Hainan style chicken, it's literally the same empress chicken I had two nights ago. Empress chicken?! What in the world is the restaurants thinking? It's like ordering a filet mignon and getting a hamburger patty, yes, they are both beef, but no they are not the same. I was thoroughly disappointed. To make matters worst, the peanut in the rice is sugar coated, its sweet. This is a savory dish, no need to add cotton candy in pasta. For $15, I would expect a bit more from the Koi Palace chain, something more than empress chicken. I would give it 0 star if it wasn't for the service. Similar to other restaurants, I will give it another try before I write it completely off. read more

If you're from out of town, don't dress down when going to buy takeout from Koi Palace Express. The server will ask where you're from. If you say you live far away, you might get shortchanged on your takeout order (i.e. item ordered but not bagged). Perhaps they think they can cheat you without consequences since you live far away. Sadly, they'll probably treat you better if you dress like you're worth more even though their location is a dinky, crowded place. Finally got home to discover one item missing from our $100-plus order, and then it made sense why the server insisted on asking me 3-5 times where I hailed from.
