It's totally not as good as the Koi Palace upstairs. Tonight, we ordered the abalone seafood congee, farm raised hainan chicken soup and HK style baked pork chop rice cheese. Every time we go here, I feel like it is over priced and the food is just okay. It also takes a long time for the food to arrive so it's hard to come here when you are already hungry because you will be waiting 30 more minutes for your food. As for tonight, the elderly people in my dining party liked it but humans lose taste buds when they age, so I'm going to take their opinions with a grain of salt. We went there because we didn't want to wait for long line the at koi palace dim sum place upstairs. Thinking the express will have some dim sum to choose from (which they did in the past). Service is basically semi self serve. You ordered the food at the register and paid for them before they brought the food to your table. Service was good at least. The waitress there kept checking on us to make sure we got everything we needed. However, Food was just ok. We ordered chow main, rice roll, congee. This was my favorite place to eat Wonton Roasted Duck noodle soup. Haven't been here for a while so decided to come back and eat. But was disappointed and extremely frustrated this time around. First, their soup was blan. Roasted Duck doesn't smell like it was Roasted. But rather, seems like it came out of the microwave. No aroma of a Roasted Duck at all. The noodle soup usually comes with 2 pieces of Chinese brocoli. But there were none at all today. Finally, what ticked me off was the receipt that I saw when I got home. My wife was in a rush to pay for the bill cause my kids were acting up. After we went home, I looked at the bill and was shocked. Noticed that they had already charged a 16% Service Fee. But on the bottom, those greedy bastards have the audacity to add another line for Extra Tip, after they had already charged a 16% Service Fee. My wife usually tip when we eat so she tipped them 15%. So yeah...we ended up paying the 16% Service Fee and a 15% tip on top of that. WTF!? This is ridiculous! An outrage! Extremely unacceptable! We came here with our little 9month old to celebrate Mother's Day. It was past the lunch rush and nearing closing time but they were happy to seat us along with a few more groups. It was pretty busy but the staff were friendly and super efficient. The restaurant is clean and well kept, Family friendly and good for babies. We ordered a Hainan chicken with rice and soup and also the wonton noodle soup. Both were delicious. The wonton noodle soup runs about $13 and Hainan chicken is $18. The wonton were tasty well made with good quality shrimp. Noodle were good Al dente. And broth was tasty. Hainan chicken was good. The chicken was pretty tender and the sauces paired well. The little bone broth soup that came on the side was actually my favorite. It was so delicious and had deep bone flavor. It had little piece of pork that are soft and melts in your mouth too. I also got the Hk style milk tea. It's got quite a bit of caffeine and really great deep tea flavor. Not watered down at all... it was just how I like it. Not loud inside. Plenty of tables and chairs. They serve authentic Hong Kong style Cantonese foods. Parking lot was less busy and felt vacant. Not all restaurants/retailers open everyday now. Lots of modern corporate buildings surrounding the area. Service was professional and excellent. They are experienced staffers. Chefs were all professional inside the kitchen too. No lines or crowds after 11:30 AM on a Monday. Nice. Modern upkeep and public restroom down the hall in back. I had the most delicious beef flank ho-fun noodles today. Portion size was huge! Lots of good quality fat meat cubes and noodles for sure. Soup base was excellent. Exceeded my taste expectations. Best of all was my favorite Hong Kong lemon tea. So lemon fresh with perfect sweetness. Dumplings with peanuts were ok. They should drop prices on the dumplings though. Loved my lunch spot near the kitchen. Felt great. Cantonese speaking staffers. Quick service and hardworking. Only a few customers were in line for takeout lunch orders. Good vibes. Yes, definitely pricey, but that's how it is at most Hong Kong cafes and similar restaurants too. Koi Palace Express is actually pretty good in food quality. It wasn't a busy weekend night or anything just a regular day, but i still had to wait for 5+ minutes before the servers came to take my order and 15+ for the food to be served. The servers were impatient and slow and they took orders for people who sat down later than me first. Food was really really disappointing compared to what they offered before, especially the vegetables were not at all edible. The rice was seasoned unevenly and just didn't taste well. On this visit I wanted a bowl of Roast duck and fish cake ho fun. It's a mini version of the main restaurant and it's now one of our favorite weekend spots to eat for great quality and reasonably priced chinese food. I love how it reminds me of Hongkong flavors for the duck, soy chicken and especially the shrimp wonton noodles. The wonton noodles and soup are legit Hongkong style. We love the calamari, soy chicken, bbq combo. And the seafood pineapple fried rice- soooo good!!! We still have to try the other dishes but for sure we will be back as often as we can! read more

The portion is big but it doesn't feel substantial, meaning not enough chicken and too much water. The rice roll is ok, but tue condiment sauce wasn't enough. Updated review for lunch: Koi Palace Express remains one of our go-to places for Hong Kong-style wonton noodles, dumpling lo mein, and occasional rice plates like Hainan Chicken and BBQ mixed plate. They also serve a limited dim sum menu, which is great since upstairs Koi Palace in insanely busy for weekend dim sum. The food is actually good here, but the last few times we've dined here, food actually came out really slow. Soup noodles dishes seem to come out fast, but a rice plate or steamed black bean ribs can take forever. On my last visit, the wife finished her wonton brisket noodles and steamed spare ribs BEFORE my BBQ rice plate came out! She left to order a birthday cake at Kee Wah while I wound up eating alone. 3 stars, since I am not yet convinced "Express" is deserving. My husband and I have been coming here about once a month for the past 8 years. The food here to us, is decent; it's rare that they would mess up the taste of the food. So, if you want some decent Cantonese or Hong Kong style Chinese food, but don't want to wait in line for a long time at the regular Koi Palace upstairs, this is the place to come. They even have dim sum options; I like their Hai-Nan Chicken with rice, roasted duck, and BBQ pork. Why only 3 stars? This place is quite dirty; the tables are always sticky, floor sometimes sticky sometimes slippery. The bathroom smells bad all the time, not the dirtiest I've seen but not clean either. Service here varies, it depends on which server takes your order or refills your drinks. I would say half of them are nice but the other half don't even want to give you eye contact. As being somewhat regulars, we know which one to order from, so we're ok coming here once a month. read more

Waitress said the little bit of chopped chive was the vegetable. The BBQ sampler platter had roast duck as one of the items, none on our platter. Waitress said picture was roast chicken (btw, wasn't that good), it wasn't. They've kept the prices the same but have cut back. Been coming here for well over a decade now! Food has been consistently delicious over the years and the restaurant is actually more of HK Cafe these days which is perfect since those are pretty rare in the pleasanton/dublin area. Food is a bit pricey (honestly all Chinese food is pricey these days for some reason) but at least the quality here warrants it in my opinion. The waitress aunties are super friendly and attentive and the interior is clean and modern (recently remodeled). However sometimes when it gets busy, which it often does during peak hours, the food can take a bit longer to come out. I feel like they are slightly understaffed. You can't help but compare this place with its parent restaurant just right upstairs, Koi Palace, which I absolutely love. Unfortunately the food quality here is just subpar compared to what they serve at its parent restaurant. First of all, staff could have been more attentive to their customers when we were there. There were probably a total of 5 tables they had to wait on, but instead of checking in on us, most of the wait staff just stood around. So, that was too bad. The restaurant configuration was strange. It had basically two dining areas that were separated by a narrow hallway, in which they tried to fit a few tables as well. And the tables and the chairs, even though they looked cute, were sooooo uncomfortable to sit on! So bad. I did really like how the table hid the condiments though :) The ambience was..... almost nonexistent.... no music background, no nothing. It was bare. The food was nothing to write home about. We ordered the dry lo mein with dumplings. The noodles came super dry by the time the dish was served to me. And the dumplings could've been more plump and juicier. I had the same item from S&J BBQ in the same vicinity and S&J does this dish so much better by a super long shot....which to me was so much surprising! I mean, we're talking about the famous Koi Palace here. Price wasn't too bad, at $10. We also ordered sizzling steak in black pepper sauce. I'm from south east Asia, where black pepper beef is a popular dish, so I know how it's supposed to taste. But unfortunately what I had from Koi Palace Express did not match my expectation at all. The one thing I dislike is the chairs, I get that the concept is cool, but the actual execution of that concept isn't great because the chairs are so narrow! It hurts your butt since they are like a triangular shape. The middle compartment that holds the condiments is really cool though, so that's a plus. The price is reasonable, they add the 16 percent but servers are courteous and advise that it is optional if you want to add a tip. Milk tea is always strong and smooth.
