I came here about a month ago when I was staying in NC for the weekend. It was Friday night, me and my friends had been on the road for about five hours and we were pretty hungry. My friends suggested we stop at some fast food place for dinner, but being in a different state, I suggested we go to a local spot instead of getting something we can find anywhere. I ended up kind of regretting that decision, unfortunately. This place has no indoor seating, there are tables set up outside of the building, right by parking spaces, which I didn't mind too much, except for when cars pulled up and people were just sitting there waiting for their to go orders to come out. You order everything on your phone, which isn't too bad since it's not a huge menu, but I did wish there were more pictures of the dishes. I ordered the spicy pork bulgogi bowl, my friend ended up giving me most of his sweet potato fries and I got the Prairie Basic Rebecca imperial stout for a drink. My favorite part about the whole meal was the beer, it was a strong, dark, delicious stout. In all honesty, the beer made this place 3 stars instead of 2, and if I ever found myself in Durham again, I'd stop by here just for the beer. They have an impressive drink selection. The food was OK. I live in north Jersey where there are so many good asian restaurants and supermarkets, and bulgogi happens to be one of my favorite things when eating Korean food. Based on the overall rating this place has, I had high hopes for it, but it turned out to be pretty disappointing. I find all the food to be pretty bland. Good bulgogi is heavily marinated and comes out wonderfully full of flavor, but I just didn't get that here. The veggies were fresh, but also lacking in flavor, and the rice was just kind of dry. For a $17 rice bowl, I definitely expected more. Our server was nice and attentive though, which is always appreciated. It's possible that I just got the wrong dish, but my friends weren't thrilled with their food either. Especially for these prices, I think this place can do a lot better. read more

When a little birdie told me how good the sandwiches and Asian fusion at KoKyu was, I was like a duck to water. Little did I know, it was at the top of my partner's pecking order, too. You know what they say, birds of a feather... Anyways, we had both been pretty chicken about trying new restaurants in the area since the last new place I recommended ended up being a bit of an albatross. I had to eat crow on that one, unfortunately. Well, thankfully, once we got our ducks in a row, we flew the coop to try their takeout since KoKyu was only a few miles away as the crow flies. Despite the impressively long and diverse menu, we had eagle eyes for the Chicken Bacon Franch and the Ko Faux Bahn, respectively. Oh man, first bite, immediate goosebumps. We absolutely gobbled them up, and have gone cold turkey on other local sandwich shops ever since. If you live in the Durham-Chapel Hill area, you don't need to go on a wild goose chase to find incredible food. We've already taken many friends under our wing and introduced them to this amazing place, and I feel proud as a peacock when they tell us how much it makes them go cuckoo, too. We've been picking up family meals here throughout the pandemic (6-pack tacos or massive trays of their delicious mains with rice) and love being able to stock up on their flavorful, creative food to eat for multiple meals at home. I've also found some gems in their rotating specials. If you see the Mumbai shrimp tacos, get them while you can, and eat them while they're still hot and crispy! Now, they've added burgers to the menu. So far I've only tried the BlueBoy (bacon with a whipped bleu/brie cheese combo and pickled peppers onions on a brioche bun), but it was so good that I can't wait to get it again - if I can resist tasting my way around the rest of the burger menu. My only complaint is that they took the shortrib quesadillas off the menu recently. My husband and I will continue hoping that they'll find their way back someday. Finally, a tip from this frequent customer: Sign up for their rewards program, and you'll earn $$ off future orders. It's practically like you're making money from eating there! This place is so freaking good. Omg. I placed an online order through their website and would definitely recommend getting curbside pickup -- don't use Uber Eats! They upcharge like crazy. My order was ready within 15 minutes, and even though it took me longer than 15 minutes to get there, my food was still warm when I got there. The whole pickup process was super painless: I arrived, someone (masked!!) asked for my name and gave me my order, and I drove away without having to get out of my car--all within the space of probably 2 minutes. Now for the food. I ordered the kimchi nachos and the sweet fries. The nachos were a huge portion--I couldn't finish them all in one go, and they tasted just as good for lunch the next day. This is an excellent and delicious dish, but verrryy spicy! In a good way, though. The sweet fries were out of this world. The sauce that comes with them was so freaking good. I could taste the sesame/chili oil in it and maybe wasabi? Mustard? I must have the recipe. I'm obsessed. So glad I tried this place, and I WILL be back. Especially for the fries. This was our first experience at Kokyu. We had been to another Korean BBQ place before so wanted to compare. At Kokyu, the staff were very friendly and helpful since we weren't sure about the online ordering protocol. We decided to eat outside since the indoor dining was small and a bit crowded at 12:30 PM for lunch. No one was outside so we had our choice of seats in the long mostly shady balcony facing the woods. It was hot but they had fans mounted to the side of the building that kept the air flowing. The building created the shade until 1 PM when the sun crested the roofline and it was quite hot. I thought that the native flowers in the planters was a bonus. Also note that the roar of I40 could be heard but it was not obtrusive. Our food was a bit of a disappointment though. The BBQ sauce on the meat could have been thicker and more flavorful. The bowl had a lot of rice with some veggies. There was a dark green wilted veggie that was quite sour. We had something similar at Bulkogi at Boxyard RTP and it was way better and a few dollars lower in price. This would be a nice place to eat when the weather is cooler. If I could give them, this place would have been a whole six stars for me. From their website, I didn't fully understand the concept of this collaboration of ghost kitchens. But once we got there, our server, Adam, was quick to explain and help us navigate our options via online ordering. Firstly, they're currently only offering patio dining and takeout service (as of June 2022). This ended up working out great for us as we wanted to dine al fresco, and we didn't have to wait on this Saturday evening. Adam provided plenty of recommendations and we finally settled on our respective dishes. I opted for the Baht Mi sandwich -- korean beef short rib, sriracha butter, chilies, cucumber, pickled vegetables, honey peanut sauce, KoKyu chili sauce, cilantro, mint, and crushed peanuts on perfectly toasted bread. Need I say more? This was truly one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. None of the flavors overpowered the others and there was a variety of textures to make every bite divine. I also enjoyed the small side I chose, yogurt dill cucumbers, which helped cool down my taste buds from some of the spices. My boyfriend had the Doenjang Steak Bowl -- he really enjoyed it, but trust me when I say you just need to order the sandwich above. I could see myself going out of my way to come back to this place. This place was super cool! My only recommendation is they make the website a little more user friendly and explained the concept a little better because we almost didn't go. It was essentially like four different restaurants/menus you could choose to order from. They don't have indoor seating, you go sit at a table outside and order from a QR code menu. A waitress brings water around and checks on you intermittently but you really are ordering from the online menu. We ordered the corn dip, a burger, a chicken sandwich and fries. I didn't love the corn dip, but my partner really liked it. My burger was huge and delicious and the fries were awesome. My partners chicken sandwich was also bomb! My only feedback other than the menu is I kind of wanted to order the corn dip as an app but wasn't sure how to do that so just ordered it so everything came out at once. KokYu is the definition of east asian cuisine with southern flare served in generous sizes. As a Korean immigrant from Texas with Japanese parents, I know asian-southern food and I can personally attest that that KokYu just does it right. The quality and diversity of the food, the quaint eating area, and the speed of service are all so consistently high standard. BLUF: (Takeout Review) We definitely over ordered AND REGRET NOTHING!! So having been turned in to satisfied, moaning gluttons with fat tummies, we really enjoyed every bite. From the birria dip + jus to the last scrape of lemon-soy aioli and sprout. Both sandwiches were tasty. The Birria Dip had the advantage of the jus, it was delectable. The generously filled Nước Chấm Banh Mi with two pork chops and pickled vegetables was good, but a touch dry, we helped it out with their house chili crisp oil and super sauce. One of the best sweet potato fries we've had anywhere. Super sauce? Super Yes! They had the order done quickly, just about 10 minutes. That plus the travel time, our food was in the well-packed bag for about 45 minutes in total. Everything felt like they retained their intended crunch/texture and we didn't feel like we lost any thing by not eating in. What gives us pause is the $73 (after tax and tip) for five items. If we're in the area and really, really can't think of anywhere else to eat, we'll come back. Next time I think we'll throw three or so darts and let the Fates decide for us. read more

The menu is so exciting and the perfect beer pairing food. First off, finding this place is like trying to find a treasure chest on a map. It's located in the most random spot. Most likely, your GPS will go crazy and map you somewhere around the building. From there, be patient, turn your GPS off, and try your best to find it manually like the old days. I initially thought that this was a second location for the original Kokyu sandwich shop. I was expecting a similar menu but it was totally the opposite. There are lots of parking which is huge relief. The shop is a good size with enough seating --- indoor and outdoor. We arrived around around 7:00 p.m. and had to wait in line for a good 10-minutes to place our order. Great customer service. Everyone was really kind. Now, onto the food. Here's what we ordered: Burnt End Nachos: This was one of the best nachos ever! Just the right amount of everything. The portion was very generous, especially the amount of meat! The burnt ends were tender and full of flavor. The melted cheese, avocado sauce, and thinly sliced sweet peppers was the perfect concoction. Chicken Wings: Found out that on Tuesday nights, there's a wing special! The wings were perfectly fried and had a nice bite to it. The sauce wasn't anything too special. Duck Fat Tots: A perfect portion of tater tots. Just enough. Nothing more. Matcha Sundae: A good blend of ice cream and a matcha cookie. Would I get it again? Great experience but I don't think I would. I didn't like it that much. Overall, this place is definitely a fantastic addition to the food scene here in the triangle. Strong, flavorful food! When looking for a restaurant near Southpoint, my friends and I decided to try out Kokyu. We first checked out the beer wall. Although we chose to drink water, they seemed to have a good selection of self-serve beer. Their menu is small, but packed with nutritious vegetables and flavorful spices and sauces. I ordered the kimchi quesadilla without cheese. They checked with me to see if I wanted anything else in case the quesadilla would not cook appropriately without the cheese. It actually worked out okay and the quesadilla held together. It was quite spicy and tasted great. If we were hungrier we would have ordered their large plate of mouth-watering nachos. Our orders arrived at our table quickly and were accurate. My friends and I hung out in the restaurant for a while talking and enjoying our meal. Each employee we interacted with was friendly and offered to bring us more water. There is also a jug of water to the right of the beer wall available to everyone. The restaurant is small and was busy, but there was always a table or two open. We would recommend this restaurant to others! read more

It's in the 40s outside and we have our baby with us, so suffice it to say we didn't stick around. I normally wouldn't leave a review at a place I didn't eat but I think it's important that other people know that they shouldn't plan to have a sit down meal here unless it's nice weather out. I wish we had known this before we drove all the way over to the restaurant. Maybe we'll come back in a few months when it's warm enough out. -- UPDATE: Now the owner is DMing me on multiple Yelp accounts after blocking him after his first rude message, because apparently I should be on his email list or following his business on social media to know that there is absolutely no indoor seating. In his opinion, saying "Patio Dining & Curbside Takeout" in his Instagram bio should be enough information to inform people that despite the variety of indoor dining displayed in their Yelp photos, that this restaurant does not have ANY indoor tables whatsoever. (Because of COVID apparently?) To get a sense of the tone of his messages to me, his exact words in his second message from another account: "It's disappointing that people like you exist. And, :gulp:, are reproducing. Get a grip." So now I'm 100% certain I will NOT come back to this restaurant even if the weather is perfect out. I was contact by management about the review, which was only negative in the absence of salt and the chicken sandwich. Flip was very concerned about the food quality, which was why there was no chicken sand, and about a sustainable source, so kudos. Also, he was very concerned about the perception of pretension, on my part, because of the lack of salt available. He informed me that there was salt available (Real Sicilian Sea Salt), and that they should offer it. The lack of salt on a table is my trigger, not their intention, and in his words, "One of our major goals in the restaurant business is to eliminate pretense, we don't like it, and we wont stand for it." I've always been a fan of the KoKyu food truck and Na'Mean. I was really excited to hear about their newest location near Fayetteville and Hwy 54. My husband and I went for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. I got the short rib sliders and he got the lobster roll sliders. I really loved mine! The rolls were perfect, the pickled stuff was amazing, and the meat was delicious. I also got the tater tots and was so excited when I remembered they sprinkle them with rosemary and you dip them in a spicy aioli! So tasty. They seem to have a lot of beers and that weird wristband-serve-yourself situation, but that's not my scene. Oh, the flavors! Joyful employees. Shaded outdoor dining. Truly amazing selection of beers. Kokyu is the penultimate destination for those with an adventurous palate. The menu shifts with the availability of local fresh produce. Every shift is a delight. I am a fan of distinct but complimentary flavors. Sweet, spicy, savory, tangy. Kokyu is masterful in this regard. The menu is impressive and diverse. I think of Kokyu as Korean fusion with great beer and interesting milk shakes. The shrimp tacos are a favorite and their salmon bowls, in all their seasonal varieties, are heavenly. This is Sep 01,2024. I predict that this restaurant is going viral in the next few months. They are getting ready to open a newly constructed deck overhanging a creek and shaded by trees. It is a LARGE deck. For those who, like myself, enjoy dining outside, this will be a prime venue. There are very few local restaurants that could offer the same atmosphere. I suspect that they will add some live music. Finally, the people are wonderful. I suspect it is because the owners treat them like family and seek input for new recipes and beer selections. Happy employees = great service. Word of caution: Many of the dishes are spicy. However, when you bring up the menu by scanning the QR code on the table, you can customize your order. The staff are very helpful. Just tell them that what you want and they seem to delight in coming up with a solution, even substituting sauces from other dishes. We tried KoKyu for takeout and found the experience so easy from start to finish. Ordering online was simple and convenient - with pictures of all of the food and a detailed description of ingredients. Curbside pick up was fast - ready in under 15 minutes and the food was packaged perfectly. The food was pretty good. The street corn dip was phenomenal - perfectly spicy and cheesy. I also loved that the nacho dip was nicely packaged separately which kept the food fresher for longer. The chicken sandwich was also good. Even though the food was good and unique, it was extremely overpriced. There is no side for the chicken sandwich and a side of fries is almost 8 dollars for a single serving. The nachos were also a little overpriced in my opinion. I think this is definitely a restaurant to try if you live in the area and want to splurge for a date night, just note the prices on the menu in advance and be prepared. read more

Pretty disappointed by KoKyu. I had high expectations because of the reviews and I heard good things, but I ordered the bulgogi bowl and felt like I had wasted my money. For one, the bowl is so expensive for no reason. There's barely any meat and 80% is either rice or side dishes, which are not hard or expensive to make. I couldn't even finish the bowl. I really don't think it's worth it, and I've had much better Korean fusion bowls at less expensive places. read more

Kokyu is our favorite pandemic take out spot! They haven't opened the indoor to seating so I am happy they are taking their Covid precautions seriously and supporting the safety of their staff. We order online and pickup and it's always ready when it should be (you get a text it's ready), and they are quick to bring it out, unlike other places. If you want to sit and eat, you can choose and outdoor table and mobile order giving the table number. A great compromise! But what about the food!? One thing I love is this location is a shared kitchen for their other businesses and so you can order off several menus. Our go-to is ko-faux bahn from Na'mean (light on the chili sauce) and we get a kokyu side of furikake steak fries. Y'all, I don't even like fries but these are delicious! I want to buy their seasoning straight up like people buy everything bagel seasoning. Wait, but really, I want it on avacado toast now. The fries travel pretty well for the trip home and are downright my favorite. I love the crisp, the cut, and omg that flavor. Seriously, what are you waiting for!? KoKyu is always good-see my review from earlier. Today was particularly good-taco special are Cajun grilled shrimp tacos, which they let me sub the Cajun shrimp for crispy shrimp on the Thai Chop chop salad. They are extremely accommodating with special request for my Keto diet. Excellent as always. read more
