Helloooooo cheesesteak in a pastry, what else could you want? The fella ordered the traditional sausage, jalapeno and cheese and was very pleased. On N. Lamar, near the intersection of 38th, it is a busy and chaotic scene. But beyond all of that there is a kolache war going on between Lone Star and the Kolache Factory, who are separated by no more than 200 yards. So I decided to check both of them out for comparison. In the end I think both have their own things going for them, no one really stood out the outright winner. I compared the sausage and cheese, polish hot, and ham and cheese croissants. Kolache Factory positives: - I found their ham and cheese croissant to be better than Lone Star's, it had more filling and tasted great. You also get half off after 1:30pm, which gives you 30 min since they close at 2pm. Lone Star offers 1/2 off at Noon. Polish Sausage hot and sausage + cheese are popular kolaches, I found Lone Star's to be slightly better - - bigger polish sausage and they have a slightly sweeter bun, but that preference is yours. The quality is still good here. So the choice is yours, but that's my breakdown. Both stores make great kolaches, it just boils down to your preference. read more

I had my first chance to try a kolache here on Thursday morning, and it was a good outcome. I had a jalapeno, cheese, and sausage kolache to go. I was offered the chance to warm it, which I accepted. When I finally got to eat it about 10 minutes later at my destination, I'm glad I took them up on their offer. I found the kolache bread to be above average, and they certainly did not skimp on the jalapenos. Quality was very good overall. Service was slightly above average, but I felt price was also slightly above average. All in all a good experience, and I'm waiting for the chance to make a return trip and sample some more of their varieties. I found it a shame that I'd already had breakfast that morning! read more

Yummmmy! When mah boo told me to check this place out, I was wary because of the name (what the heck is a kolache??). But I try to be more open with food when I'm with him, so we came here for breakfast. It closes at 2pm so watch out! Luckily we got here at 1:45pm, and the guy was super friendly. Mah boo mentioned that I came all the way from CA just to try their stuff (even though he knows it was really for him), and so the guy told us about their most popular kolaches. I had the bacon, egg and cheese, mah boo had the sausage, jalapeno and cheese, and the texas hot (a similar yet bigger mix). First of all, I used to love eating the horrible-for-you starbucks sausage, egg, and cheese sandwiches, but made myself stop because that crap is bad for your health. But these are just like that, yet better. They're in white or wheat rolls, they're clean, and heck, they're pretty cute. It'd be nice to bring them to conferences or field trips for kids btw. The prices were decent too, and even though they're not humongous rolls or anything, the meal itself was pretty filling. Everything's bigger in Texas, but even though at first glance these rolls aren't, they did their job right. I'm a spoiled brat. I grew up on Kolache Factory in Houston and have held every other Kolache I have ever tasted in esteem of those I got there. When shipley's dominated the game, Kolache factory came in and literally blew the competition in regards to the assortment and variety it offered. Fruit, meat variations and even veggie options line the back counter, freshly baked within the hour. Not a bite that isn't scrumptious... As long as they heat it properly. So make sure they do.. Cause a cold meat Kolache is not how it's meant to be served. Fruit can stay cold.. :) For $10 I can feed myself and my kiddo, so it's a cheaper option on the go, but at the Lamar location, we like to chill. They have a small patio with stone tables, that adjoins a sand pit for kids. So while I'm soaking up the sun.. She is playing and getting dirty. (Yay. Lol) read more

I just picked up some Kolaches to take home but the service I received was so terrible that I wanted to make sure to post. There was a couple before me ordering, I waited about 3 minutes or so for them to finish their order. Then she called me up and I began to place my order, after each type of item I ordered she would ask if that was it, I said no I have a few more after each time. She would roll her eyes then go grab the next item after asking me twice what I wanted. She stopped to talk to the kitchen staff in between. At this point another customer arrived, she then hurried me even more, he came in when I asked for my last two items & paid. He waited less time than I did with the prior customer but before I could grab my card from her she began addressing him apologizing for his long wait. Really bad customer service, do not recommend Hi Alaina thanks for responding but the person who was working that day I posted the original review was not very customer service friendly and reheated my food as if I was a bother even though I asked nicely. Overall it was not a good experience I would recommend more customer service training. Also add a sign that your outside seating is closed would be good bc my kids assumed it was open. It's disappointing that out of all the kolache factories I've been too in Houston, this one is Austin, half the time, is ready to serve its customers when they open at 6:00am. I work next door at Seton and have to be there at 6:30am and have been told too many times that two of my favorite kolaches (sausage and gravy egg & cheese) will be ready in 15-20 minutes after arriving. Met a friend for "weekday brunch" and he wanted kolaches. This place was close and so we decided to meet here. Parking is very limited and lot is tough to get into crossing Lamar. It is shared with an automotive repair shop. I had been here before so I remembered the drill. They have basic fruit and breakfast kolaches but also some unique meat ones. I like to get the latter. I saw ones I'd had before - pizza, fajita, seasoned chicken and others but today I spotted a bbq kolache and decided to give that a try. Surprisingly, it was pretty good. Brisket is hard to do right and keep moist but they did just that. I was happy with my selection and hope to see it again one day as a number of times the unique ones just don't work. I like the kolaches here and this is the most convenient location. But it's very annoying that they often don't have the kolaches I want when I go in. I went in today at 7:30, 30 minutes after they opened. There were signs all over advertising the Monthly Special (steak and egg) and the new chorizo and egg. I'd also received a couple of emails about the special. I wanted to order both and neither was ready. No apologies were forthcoming. I know I can't always expect that they have every type always available. But this is probably the 3rd or 4th time in the last few when it's happened - always in the morning, always the specials. This is literally across a tiny street from my work...a couple of my coworkers sneak out to get their daily fix of kolaches in the morning. Not saying that I'm not guilty of that, either. The sales reps and doctors bring us kolaches at least once a week, as well. I'm a frequent kolache eater. For those of you who don't quite know what a kolache is (I was asked this question the other day), it's a sweet roll type of thing stuffed with a variety of different options. I've had the breakfast kolache from here, stuffed with sausage, egg, and cheese. It is pretty yummy, don't make the mistake of ordering more than one, thinking that they're too small for your appetite. We also frequently get sausage with cheese, sausage with jalapeno and cheese, and fruit varieties. The store is very clean and donut shop-like. You walk in and there's a wall sized selection to choose from. You can see the full variety on their website. The employees I've encountered have been too friendly for as early in the morning as I've gone. The hours work for my needs, but probably not for many others. They open at 6am (people are there a little earlier, though, I think) and close at 2pm. This store is in an interesting location, crammed between Brake Check and a parking garage. It's also interesting that a couple blocks north is Lone Star Kolache, a local business. For that alone(and being a chain, I guess), Kolache Factory loses one star. I had a craving for a cream cheese chocolate kolache over the weekend and decided to try the 35th/Lamar location to see if it was any better than the one on Parmer. The girl behind the counter looked about 15 and was incredibly peppy. 2 Stories; 1 Purpose. Sort of like Crash, Babel, Snatch movies. I went to HEB one time and got a buy "3 kolaches, get 3 free kolaches" coupon with my receipt. Boy, was I excited to have 6 kolaches in my possession... the only concern was: how do I obtain these kolaches, as kolache shops have the peak hours of 6AM-some odd time in the early afternoon. One night, I ran 8 miles, drank way too much water, then went to bed. I peed 6 times that night, and so I just gave up on sleeping. So...what do you do when you are up at 5:30AM? Connection: Well, I waited until 6AM, and headed to the Kolache Shop to use my coupons and burn time before my day started. It was a great decision. I found out that KF is actually a chain, but regardless of these bundles of joy being mass produced in some factory, they pretty tasty. And there are plenty of offerings: sweets, meats, and hybrids (i.e. croissants, etc). The meatball is a nice light calzone-style kolache. The dough is thin and fluffy, and the tomato sauce and meatballs are a good combination. The Italian chicken was alright. The Philly cheese-steak was alright. Nothing really stood out, but KF definitely gets a nod for putting some pretty jammin' combination inside great dough. Their dough is light, buttery, and flavorful. What more could you ask for when you are struck with insomnia (or just excessive bladder instability)? read more

Stopped here for a quick breakfast the other morning. Heard great things about it, but on the whole, wasn't too impressed. I'd never heard of a kaloche before and was told it's like a stuffed bagel. I guess that's not too far off -- it looks like a regular round roll until you bite in and find a plethora of filling. There are sweet kaloches, but I opted for a breakfast kaloche with scrambled eggs, cheese and sausage. The bread was really sweet and made the breakfast kaloche taste odd. Little bits of egg and bread and bacon will be flying in every direction as you tear into a fabulous little sweet roll like a buzz saw. It's that good. If you're not familiar with Kolaches - it's basically the most delicious breakfast ever invented. It's a slightly sweetened roll filled with egg or cheese or bacon or all of the above (there are actually lots of different combo's including veggie, cream cheese, sausage, etc). You pick what you want in yours, they heat it up and you then enter taste bud heaven. If you go to this place after 1:30PM, you get half price Kolaches if you'll just politely remind them to ring you up at the "day old" price. Not much to say except that all of the potato, egg, and cheese kolaches had rotten potatoes in them.....very obviously rotten, not just discolored. My question is how does someone not notice that, or did they notice but knew the customer wouldn't until it was too late? This location is not as great as the Houston locations are, but they still provide good kolaches at a great price. We had the sausage, egg and cheese kolache, a sausage and cheese kolache and a BBQ beef kolache. I definitely prefer the egg one to just simple sausage--it just has a better taste IMO. The BBQ beef kolache is constantly good and filling so it's my regular. They offer takeout and I believe UberEATS delivers nowadays. read more

I am not one to give into restaurant signage, but when I saw "Happiness is a Warm Kolache," I wanted in. I'm a big fan of the kolaches in West, Texas along I-35, so I wanted to give these a try. I bought two kolaches - bacon/cheese (on white) and sausage egg and cheese (on wheat) As for the bacon and cheese kolache - it was very doughy (it was like chewing gum chewy) and did not taste good at all. And the bacon was rubbery and tasteless. I enjoyed the sausage and cheese kolache but perhaps only because I was so glad to be done with the bacon one. This kolache was more fully cooked. Perhaps I'm impartial to the kolaches in West (at Czech Stop), but I didn't really enjoy this one either. Kollache Factory is one of my favorite places for weekend breakfasts! I always get them to go and they stay fresh through out the weekend. My favorite is ham egg & cheese, but I also love ham & cheese and the sausage & cheese. The options with egg don't have much meat, but are very filling! Wonderful establishment. Open for the morning hours, usually open until two I believe. They try and give away the kolaches instead of just throwing them away after close.
