I was disappointed, to say the least with my most recent visit at Kon Chau. I've been going to Kon Chau with my relatives since relocating to Miami for school. I have to say it is probably one of the best dim sum places for Miami. *note for Miami* (If you've had "good" dim-sum elsewhere in the world, this will definitely will not be up to par as there are very limited options and taste-wise it is only alright.) There are not many options for decent oriental food here in Miami, FL so on that note, I would recommend Kon Chau to satisfy that craving of yours. The low rating for this recent visit was less about the taste of the food and more about the quality/presentation of the food itself and service. Two of the three people in our party also had stomaches following this visit. As a result, I am unavailable to award a higher rating Kon Chau at this time. I understand it was during the week of Lunar New Year and it was busy, however, I don't think it was appropriate to bring out food that looked like the ones we got served. In addition, I understand the concept of trying to turn over tables quickly for more business but the way our waiter did this was down-right rude. Service: Like most "authentic" dim sum places, you can't expect superb service as they are always busy and understaffed. However, there is a fine line between this and being unorganized. There is no way to track what items you have ordered and received. This caused much confusion at our last visit and our waitress was utterly unhelpful when we asked about our food. We waited close to 20 mins while we saw the table next to us who ordered after we get served the same dim sum we ordered. We asked her and she told us to go ask the kitchen ourselves. This attitude was not appreciated as there was also no means for the customer not do so. We had to ask a different waitress to check on our food for us. As a result, we probably sat at the table for more than 40 mins before all our food came. We were still eating and our original waitress had the audacity to just put down the bill at our table. This was not appreciated as we did not intentionally take this long, we only took this long because we did not get our food which she did not help check on. This type of service was very upsetting. Food: Overall, the food was alright. I definitely was a bit disappointed as everything seemed "sloppy" Chow Mien: The chow mien we ordered is typically supposed to come out as half softly cooked noodles and half crispy crunchy noodles. It was definitely soggy overall instead of the two distinctions. Even from the pictures, you can tell that the crispy noodles became limp and soggy. Taste-wise it was pretty standard. Taro Cake The taro cake was burnt and one of the pieces seemed to be significantly thinly sliced than other other ones. Taste-wise, it was a bit bitter due to the burnt sections. Even after attempting to remove the burnt areas, there was a lingering burnt taste. Egg Custard we were hesitant to eat them as there were dirty black dots on the top of the egg custards. I feel like egg tarts like these should not be serviced as they have been contaminated. I did not try the egg tart so I cannot tell you how they actually tasted, but I can tell you that from the appearance from the crust, you can tell that they were stale and soggy. They definatey have been sitting out for quite a bit. Shrimp and leek crystal dumplings These were definitely too salty and the wrapper itself was very poorly made as you can see there were tears in them when they came. The crystal dumpling wrapper completely ripped apart when you try picking them up even for native chopstick holders like my aunts. Shrimp Cheong fun The shrimp in this had gone bad as they smelled and tasted funny. You could also tell from the meat quality as it was way too soft for in good condition shrimp (even if they were frozen). It was also drenched in shoyu. Meatballs and Seafood Wrap These two dishes during this visit were probably the most on par with their normal quality. read more

I went with high expectations as I was told my a couple of friends that their dim sum is better than Tropical Chinese across the street. They definitely have a broader and better selection of dim sum than Tropical but the it is far less tasty. I still enjoyed my experience and would try again. They had great service and I do love having options but speaking only on dim sum because that's all I had, it wasn't that great. read more

Kon Chau is my family's favorite Dim Sum spot in Miami. We've been coming here for years and have not been disappointed. The food always comes out piping hot and fresh. Some of our favorite dishes include steamed pork and shrimp dumplings (Siu Mai), fried meat and shrimp dumplings, steamed shrimp dumplings and soy sauce noodles. Though those are the favorite staples, we always order additional items from both the dim sum and regular menu (aka over ordering and over eating). Kon Chau serves dim sum everyday, but certain items are only available on weekends and before 3 pm, so if you want full access to the dim sum menu come on those days. Be mindful there sometimes is a 15-30 minute wait during busy brunch/lunch hours. Don't expect much from the decor; it's very basic and a little outdated, but it's the perfect example of not judging a book by its cover. I have a thing for dum sum but have been frequenting Broward for some of the best I've ever tasted! I was recently told by a fellow Yelper that this place,not only was closer but was delish. Well I knew we had to check it out and the day had finally come! It's located in a small plaza with nail salons and massages, a bar, banquet hall, and oriental mart. Upon walking in you notice how open and unfortunately outdated it is. It needs a revamp from the carpeting,the outdated blinds, and bland walls. Even the decor was meh. But not to be fooled, this place was everything except meh. We were lucky enough to arrive a little before noon and the lunch rush. By the time we ordered our drinks and they brought out tea there wasn't an empty seat in the house! Taking a look at the menu I knew exactly what I wanted so I stuck with what I was familiar with and OMFG,this place is outstanding! The flavors are all here and even though they were so busy, service never became mediocre. They always refilled our waters and brought out more napkins without asking. I stuck to the dim sum menu ordering the ribs,chicken feet, pork and shrimp steamed dumplings, and pan fried dumplings. I devoured every single portion and even doubled up on the dumplings. It was ALL so good. My BF ordered the #5 which was pork fried rice and chicken wings. You should've seen the portion and the big pork chunks in the rice, never seen such huge pieces!There was dead silence at our table, well besides the yums that were coming from our mouths. My two favorites are the shrimp steamed dumpling and the mushroom and chicken steamed buns. Best dim sum I've had in Miami. The place is a little difficult to get to because the street is so busy. The Resturant is clean + They give you fresh loose leaf tea. The food comes out piping hot and the duck sauce and hot sauce they have at the table is the perfect compliment!! I had several different items the only thing I wasn't a super fan of was the crab rangoon ( they had too much onion). The soup dumpling was pretty good, but my favorite was the Shrimp Ball; just thinking about them makes my mouth water. The staff was nice enough a pretty attentive. It's not every day that I have a craving for dim sum but last week, nothing sounded better for lunch than some dumplings and pork buns. On the tip of fellow dim sum-lovers I decided to give Kon Chau a try this time around and I am so happy I did! We walked in and grabbed a seat immediately. From there, we analyzed the sheet of paper and started checking off what we wanted, similar to some sushi restaurants. It's nice they have the picture grid to look at to ensure we knew exactly what we were ordered. The two of us tried to show some restraint and ended up with the following: Pan Fried Pork Dumpling - Perfectly crisp on the outside with juicy pork on the inside. Steamed Roast Pork Bun - These are big and eating a whole one definitely fills you up, but I am such a fan of the sweet dough bread, coupled with the chopped up pork. I like to dip in the red spicy paste for an extra kick. Spring Rolls - I'm not a fan of spring nor egg rolls but these I found myself wanting to eat. Win! Rice Noodles Singapore Style Curry - This was our biggest dish and we almost cleaned the plate! It's great if you love curry (but not spicy) and definitely worth the splurge. Shanghai Soup Dumpling - Must eat them all in one bite or else the soup will pour out everywhere, but these might have been my favorite bite of all! Would it be wrong to say these are all must orders? It was the perfect amount for two hungry people and didn't top $30! If you aren't a fan of dim sum, they also have staple Chinese dishes and you can also do online delivery. Come to think of it, I once ordered from here with a big group of coworkers and everyone was able to find something that they would like. If it wasn't evident from my 5 previous reviews or the nearly 60 food pictures I've uploaded, I come to this restaurant a lot. My dad loves Chinese food and this has been his favorite restaurant in Miami since the 80s. It's been our family's primary source of sustenance when we've vacationed in South Florida every year since the early 2000s. You would think I'd be sick of this place and yes, sometimes I do get sick of it. We once ate here 6 days in a row and even had a day or two where we came for two meals in one day. The great thing about Kon Chau is it has a huge, reasonably priced menu with authentic Cantonese food, seasonal and regular rotating specials, and dim sum that's served all day. They have a helpful picture menu of dim sum items if you're having trouble deciding what to order. Dim sum items are ordered off a menu where you check off the items yourself with a pen/pencil and hand the sheet to your server. Entree-style items and specials are ordered the "regular" way off a standard menu. This is an old restaurant. It's been here for decades. The owners haven't changed and many of the servers haven't either. This place is consistent. The kitchen and service are like a well-oiled machine. It's not a sexy restaurant. It's a casual sit-down restaurant with good food -- traditional Chinese comfort foods. The interior could definitely use some updating. The tables and chairs are old, the carpet is worn, and the ceiling tiles have grown dark over time. However, there's no doubt this place is still as functional as ever. I've tried many different items. To save you the time of reading through my prior reviews, here's a summary of most of my favorites: Dim sum items: BBQ steamed pork buns Chicken feet Pork rice noodle crepe Beef stomach (beef "honeycomb") Egg custard Sticky rice in lotus leaf Entrees: Beef or pork chow fun noodles Snow pea tips Ong choy (hollow stem vegetable, seasonal) Chive flower Roast duck Red roast pork Chicken with ginger and scallion (dry version) West Lake beef soup Won ton egg noodle soup Roast pork or roast duck noodle soup Kon Chau makes decent bao (steamed buns). It's a little on the doughy side, but the roast pork is flavorful. These don't heat up well, so you'll want to finish them in the restaurant. Chicken feet has always been one of my favorite dim sum items since I was a child. I can't imagine it's healthy for you, because it's mostly sauced skin. It's very tasty, but also boney and tendony. If you don't mind chewing and sucking the skin off the small chicken feet bones, then you'll love it because of the savory flavor. The pork rice noodle crepes (a.k.a. cheong fun) are delicious. They have a shrimp version too. The beef stomach ("honeycomb" on menu) comes with black beans. The egg custard comes 2 to an order and is sweet and yummy. The sticky rice in lotus leaf is a reliable standby. It's filling and the rice comes with pieces of chicken (bone-in) and Chinese sausage. Good stuff. Chow fun (noodles) is another reliable dish. With beef is the most common way to order chow fun, but their pork version is also great. If I could only recommend one dish off the entire menu for you to try here, it'd probably be the chow fun. Snow pea tips and ong choy are, without a doubt, my favorite Chinese vegetables. Snow pea tips are always available. Ong choy is rare. If they have ong choy, order it! These veggies aren't cheap. They're about $12 a plate, but are so worth it. They're sauteed with garlic and are healthy for you. Chive flower and perhaps watercress come in third place. The roast duck and roast pork are excellent meats to order. Some batches are fattier than others. You can always scrape the fat from underneath the duck skin if you're worried about eating too much fat. The roast pork is more consistently tender, but can also be fatty at times. The roast pork has lots of flavor. The duck is served bone-in and can be ordered as half a duck or a whole duck. The pork is served boneless, which is more convenient and preferable for "lazy" eaters (I admit I am a lazy eater lots of times). If you order the chicken with ginger and scallion, *do not* order the version with lots of sauce. It's soupy and not nearly as good. Order it "dry" without so much sauce. The chicken in the dry version is still tender and the ginger sauce, which comes on the side, is oily and kind of intense. West Lake beef soup is a great soup if you have small group (e.g. 4-6 people). This is similar to egg drop soup, except it also has chunks of beef and parsley in it. You can add a red vinegar sauce to it add a level of sourness to it. White pepper also works well with the soup. The egg noodle soups are a great deal at about $6 per bowl. I recommend them in the following order: won ton, roast pork, roast duck. These are delicious small bowls of egg noodles with a protein and some veggies, usually greens of some sort or mushrooms and carrots. read more

I may be the only person in Miami that had never been here & boy was that a mistake! My mother RAVES about this place & their massive dim sum selections! This past Sunday we decided to drive from Doral to Westchester for takeout. You KNOW it must be good! We arrived & I walked in & the lovely woman attending handed me the menu, a pen & asked me to come back once I had decided. We perused the amazing menu & chose quite a few dumplings along with vegetable fried rice, jrab rangoons & spring rolls (no meat). While we were ordering people kept coming in to puck up their food in a steady stream. I made sure to request a side of their chili oil when I placed my order. Once we were home, we tore in to the beautiful, delicate, flavourful little pockets & enjoyed every last one! Rive was delicious too, chock full of bright, crisp veggies. Spring rolls were crisp & not at all greasy & were great w the sweet & sour provided. My only qualm was their krab rangoons. Too much pastry, not enough filling but considering everything else, I wasn't even bothered! Where do I start with this place? I've been coming here for years (sorry I didn't leave a review sooner!) Affordable and absolutely delicious, it's one of my favorite little gems in miami. The dim sum selection is large and I have my favorites but honestly anything on that list is DELICIOUSNESS. We decided on having DIM SUM! What a brilliant idea! A buddy of mine suggested a restaurant near Tropical Park. I automatically assumed he was talking about Tropical Chinese Restaurant across from Tropical Park. Reason I came to this conclusion was the fact that Tropical Chinese Restaurant is known for having the best DIM SUM in Miami. Boy was I wrong..... I park at Tropical Chinese's parking lot and walk into the restaurant to add my name to the waiting list (table for five please). Mind you, the group was about 5 minutes behind schedule. Tropical Chinese was packed! I get a phone call and they question my whereabouts. I was at the wrong restaurant! Hoped back in my car and drove over to Kon Chao which is basically a couple blocks west of Tropical Chinese Restaurant. I'm glad we came to Kon Chao because in my opinion was way better than Tropical Chinese Restaurant. Yea the carts aren't cruising around but all food items are made fresh to order and come straight out of the kitchen. What a meal! It was delicious! When I first walked into Kon Chao I noticed about 90% of the customers eating were Asian. The shopping center where the restaurant is located has an oriental market in it. I'm guessing this shopping center in general is very popular amongst Asians because of the oriental market and Kon Chao Restaurant. Again, if 90% of the customers inside the restaurant are Asian then it must be good and authentic. Everything was delicious! We started with some Jasmine Tea. I recommend ordering the Steamed Egg Custard Buns as a dessert. Those were very sweet. I would also consider The Fried Flour Stick Crepe as a dessert item. I think if the Fried Flour Stick Crepe came with a small bowl of condensed milk they would be more of a hit than they are now. We had what was just mentioned in between all other Dim Sum items we ordered and it just wasn't the same like that. This place is great for groups as we sat on a round table. The service was excellent and Stanley was very cool with all of us (I think Stanley was one of the owners or at least I want to think his family owns the restaurant). I had to ask the waiter for water a few times but then again I don't think the waiters are in it for water refills but more of getting the Dim Sum plates out for everyone to enjoy or even just focusing on having the tables cleaned up for the next set of customers. You leave that place with food coming out of your eyeballs but that's kind of the whole point lol. Any noodle or rice dish easily feeds 4 people so just a heads up. Great service! After hearing a lot of buzz about the dim sum here, I was finally able to check it out. This is a no frills place with good dim sum at an even better price. Two of the items I wanted to try were out, but that gives me an excuse to come back. What I didn't like was that I found out one of these items was out near the end of my meal, after I had to ask when the item was coming :( Don't expect amazing service, there is definitely a bit of a language barrier which made asking for items like silverware, refills, or sauces a bit difficult. Let's get on to the food. The Wonton Noodle Soup was very good, large, had plenty of noodles, and 4 shrimp dumplings in it. Very filling. The BBQ Ribs had a good flavor, but the meat was a bit tough. The special fried rice was fine, nothing special. The Steamed Shrimp Dumplings were good, but I have had better. The Steamed Pork Buns were tasty. The Pan Fried Pork Dumplings were my favorite, the sauce they came with was delicious! The Pork & Shrimp Dumplings were alright. The Soup Dumplings were really yummy! Clearly Kon Chau has been here for a good long time, delivering some damn fine food. Parking - a little tricky - on the south west side of the complex. Watch your step. Atmosphere - super dingy without being dirty. Seriously. Do not bring a date unless you know they are a foodie and are Yelp-ified diners. Otherwise, there will be trouble. Service - 5 star - swift, friendly, informative and discrete. My comfort meal - (yes, it went home with me as I intended) Steam Shrimp Dumpling - Whoa! #1 on the menu and belongs here. Green Tea Mushroom Dumpling - they called it a vegertian, excellent and surprisingly flavorful. Roast Duck Noodle Soup - Could have come here for this alone. I went here on recommendation of a co-worker. We went on a Saturday evening, the place was busy but we had no issue getting seated. This is where it gets confusing. We were seated and handed this sheets with numbers and names. No one explained to us what this sheet was for. That's the other thing, they didn't speak or understand English that well. I know, it is their restaurant but patrons need to understand how the restaurant works. We later learned that the sheet is for ordering dumplings. The food was ok, nothing out of this world big portions and decently priced. Would I go again, I don't think so but someone said that if a restaurant is packed with Asian diners has to be good as who better than an Asian to know if the food is good. Food was pretty good - unfortunately Miami just doesn't know how to do Chinese food well. But this was definitely a solid option. Ambiance is very typical and the service was very attentive. Dim sum menu was vast - had both the steamed pork and shrimp dumpling and steamed roast duck bun. Both were delicious. Egg drop soup was good. As we're the spare ribs. General Tao's Chicken and Garlic Broccoli were decent but enjoyed the rest of the meal more. Pricing was excellent. Expected to spend a lot more and had plenty of leftovers!! read more

This has been my spot for Dim Sum ever since high school. I'm 30 something now lol. Honestly you can't go wrong if you get a little bit of everything. However I would recommend: Dumpling Noodle Soup is really good, pork buns, pan fried and steam noodles and the sticky rice. With this you'll be full and satisfied. I don't say this lightly ... this is the worst food I've ever had. I order chow mein and got a container full of rice. I called to let them know and the dude on the phone was super rude and implied I was lying. Never again. Spend your money literally anywhere else. read more
