Went for a belated birthday dinner as part of a birthday weekend celebration before going to the theater and I was pleasantly surprised. The wait was supposed to be 40+ minutes but ended up being half that. Not an extensive menu brimming with choices but the food is locally sourced, the atmosphere is good for a variety of occasions (celebratory dinner with family to date night), and the service is exceptional. Over hyped resturant in Tallahassee. Everyone kept saying to go there for a good meal and warned us that it doesn't look like much from the outside. So yes the outside and inside are really nothing great. It would be fine for like a restaurant in a beach or island. It was also kind of disappointing going in when we saw the menu before hand and knew it wasnt a cheap place. It's small and busy inside. The server was very friendly and knowledgeable. The food though, was really nothing wowing. It was like with the ambiance and the prices, we expected to have one of the best meals of our life to make up for it, but it was a let down. We've eaten at better places around town at that price point now. Also it's only beer and wine. We just didn't get what people love about this place. read more

We decided to have our last meal in Tallahassee and Kool Beanz didn't disappoint. We started with the fried green tomatoes and the crab cakes. They actually complemented each other really well. I also had an apple pie cider which was great. We brought our two kids with us and it's not exactly a kid friendly place. We visited at 6pm on a Monday and it was busy! The kids had a shrimp pasta dish with ham and mushrooms, my husband had the flank steak and I had the chorizo, shrimp, chicken with rice and beans. Everything was delicious! read more

My coworkers and I finally got around to visiting this restaurant for lunch and we wondered what had taken us so long. We sat out on the patio and enjoyed the great Fall weather. Service was friendly and expert at their tasks. The menu changes a lot, based upon seasonal specials. Suffice it to say that there is such a wide selection of meat and veggie options, with creative sides, that you could eat here for a week or more and always have tasty options to choose from. Fantastic! The pork belly was my favorite! Since it was lunch, we didn't get to try their very intriguing (and affordable) wine list. Maybe next time for dinner! read more

Had the amberjack with rice, beans, and fried okra. The amberjack was cooked really well. Soft and not dry. I really like okra in general, but it was too salty for my taste. If that was toned down, the meal would have been great the browned gnocchi was a good starter and a good portion to share between 2-3 people as an appetizer. Overall, the atmosphere was fun. We sat at the kitchen bar and was able to watch them cook everything. This is a good angle because it made me want to try a few other dishes. Kind of pricey for the quality of the food though. Amazing food! Yelp reviews steered me here and Yelp reviewers did not steer me wrong. We split a salad and both ordered lunch plates. My wife had a Salmon dish and i had Amber Jack (fish) dish. The fish was prepared very nicely and the sides were excellent. While my cilantro rice was great, as were my refried black beans, the surprise hit of the sides were the plantains in my dish and the deep-fried eggplant in my wife's dish. We are new to Tally and I've been eager to try this place out! My 1st (and only so far) experience was for Mother's day brunch. We got there at about 10:15 (doors open at 10:30) and there was a line forming. By the time they let people in, we were in the first 3rd of the line. They were seating people quickly, it was a breeze. We opted to sit outside, where they have a nice covered patio with plenty of fans. But I think our server waited on our table last... we were without drinks for a while. But I also get the servers POV, they get sat all at once so it must not be the easiest situation. The hubby got Shrimp and Grits, which were amazing. Lots of delicious sauce which a bigger grit size than the usual suspects. The shrimp were cooked perfectly. The only thing he complained about is that he wanted more shrimp. I ordered the Chicken and Waffle. The batter on the chicken was so tasty, crispy and salty. The sweet potato waffle (with chunks of sweet potato), was a little dense for my preference. I really loved the "syrup", which was a spicy & sweet pepper sauce...a little reminiscent of sweet chili sauce. It was an excellent meal! I can't wait to go back and try dinner. read more

By far my favorite restaurant. The entree choices are not run of the mill. Always excited to try something new! The black bean cakes are my go to appetizer. Anything with the crispy kale is delicious. Where else in Tally can you get wahoo or cobia served with interesting sides. Always get one of Sylvia's desserts. First time in. The wife and I were waiting for tire replacement from down the street, yelped a place to eat. Kool Beanz it was. Had a 45 minute wait, but worth it. I had amberjack over red beans and Tasso ham sauce. My wife had linguine, shrimp, mushrooms with an alfredo sauce. Both of our dishes were prepared to perfection. OMG the food here is awesomely yummy! For appetizers, we had the mushrooms egg rolls, out of this world. My husband had the red fish, cooked to perfection. The fish came with freshly breaded okra and rice with red beans, he absolutely loved it. I had the flank steak cooked to perfection with mashed potatoes and onion rings. Service was great. This was my first time ever dining at Kool Beanz and it honestly blew my expectations out of the water. First of all, this restaurant has managed to have the most relaxing atmosphere ever - while serving borderline fine dining meals. I don't know how the did it, but they've done it. I started my meal with the caramelized salmon entree that came with tarragon aioli, tomato confit, asparagus, and a parsnip purée. This meal was absolutely insane. The salmon was cooked medium (which was amazing) and I'm sure you can get it more or less well done based on your personal preference. The salmon had a crispy factor to it thanks to the caramelization and it was delightful. It was placed over the purée and topped with the aioli and when the two met, it's like the gates to heaven opened up in your mouth. The sweetness of the purée was balanced so well with the aioli they could've been soulmates. The tomato confit added a nice acidity to the plate and the asparagus was cooked al dente which added a lovely crunch to the mix. All in all, such an amazing entree and would highly recommend to any salmon lovers out there. For $16, I would say this meal is a great price for such a great dish. Now, for the Crème Fraiche Panna Cotta. Phenomenal. Show stopping. Life changing. This was the first time I've ever tried panna cotta and it was so good. The heavy cream base of the panna cotta was complimented by a tart fig-limoncello syrup that made the dish that much better. Garnished with roasted figs and hazelnut streusel that added a nice texture as well. The hazelnut streusel added a lovely, sweet, nutty element which I loved. Priced at $9 I think it's definitely worth the money and can be easily shared between two people. (But, to be honest, you might not want to share if you get this for dessert.) I will definitely be returning to Kool Beanz in the future and if you've never been - go now! read more

(A little pricey or I would eat here every night - but very much worth it.) Menu changes regularly but the dishes are so interesting, paired and cooked perfectly. Let me start by saying that I've been a faithful customer of Kool Beanz since 2003, which is why this review is 3/5 stars and not lower. I hate when reviewers make an opinion from one bad experience and disregard many positive visits before that. I love Kool Beanz, which is why this almost hurts to type, but the past several times I've visited I've noticed some alarming practices that a restaurant couldn't get away with if they weren't one of the biggest fish in the Tallahassee restaurant pond. The first two are minor: 1. If I were short on money for my bill, I wouldn't expect a restaurant to be cool with that. Which is why I think it's unacceptable for a server to bring back only partial change (i.e. no coins amounting to almost a dollar). If you have no coins, you round up, and you can safely bet you'll get that dollar back in your tip. 2. For the price point, many things in the restaurant need to be updated. For example, a jagged edge on a table shouldn't rip my dress. And seat cushions shouldn't look like a dive when your bill for a date night is close to $100.00. The third is pretty major: On my last visit I witnessed some truly alarming sanitary issues. The less terrifying episode was seeing a server picking his nose in a nostril adjacent way (not full on picking his nose with his finger an inch deep but pretty darn close) then immediately picking up food to deliver to patrons. The absolutely terrifying episode was seeing a server, I swear, scratching his butt crack area, underneath his clothes and boxers, then IMMEDIATELY proceeding to set tables. Since I love Kool Beanz, I called the next day to relay my concerns to the manager. Seven days later I am still waiting for a call back. We all know this place is delicious but that doesn't mean they're above having basic sanitation practices or caring what their customers think. Looks like from now on I'll have to make my Black Bean Cakes at home. They won't be as tasty but at least it won't result in an E. coli or MRSA infection. read more

Stumbled upon this Kool place, went inside to check it out and WOW. Had an very very good black bean cake appetizer followed by an awesome salmon meal that was absolutely cooked to perfection. Sat at the chefs bar and was awed by the presentation and selection of meals. Had to ask the server for some color commentary on everything coming off the chefs prep table before i could decide on what to order. If you enjoy great food, this is a must try place. The atmosphere us very casual and laid back, nothing fancy or high end. They saved all the quality for the meal! read more

Wow is all I can say! The food and service was phenomenal! My husband and I are huge foodies, and we were so pleased with our date night dinner at Kool Beanz. We had the grilled octopus, crab cakes and fried oysters for appetizers. The strawberry and arugula salad to share, and then I got the pork tenderloin and he got the short rib. All of it was fantastic! So delicious! For dessert I got the pound cake, and the hubs got the creme brûlée. I'm not a huge creme brûlée, but it was so good! My pound cake was warm and delicious as well! We can't wait to go back! read more

Agree with other reviewers that this place is really good. It is a bit expensive, so you should expect a somewhat steep bill. Went there in mid-August and sat on their covered patio, which was lively, but not as artsy as the inside. The food was very tasty. I think I had a red snapper special, but the sides were the ones I see on the website menu listed with the salmon, and they were very good. My husband had some sort of pasta seafood special and he thought that was very good as well. Both of our side salads were super tasty and a good start to the meal. The waiter was efficient and friendly, and very patient with me as I grilled her about the different types of hard ciders on the drinks menu. I ended up getting a blackberry one that was delicious. I really liked this place. The get your own coffee was fun, but they didn't have any dairy free creamer. It was also rough tip toeing around to get coffee past a pretty packed restaurant. The food was pretty great! I had the hash with over easy eggs, fruit cup, and avocado. The hash seemed to be house made instead of canned. I actually love canned lol but theirs was very fresh and tasted unique. It was the mush texture, not the chunk texture. Very nice people working in this place.
