I did my graduation lunch here last May and had a great experience! I was in the middle of moving and neglected to make a reservation until the day before graduation, so of course everywhere was booked. Kool Beanz had a single slot left right at 2:00 or 2:15 (right before they close between lunch and dinner); as a former bartender myself, I usually hate making reservations right before closing, but the staff was so patient and didn't make us feel rushed at all. It was so nice to be able to enjoy celebrating with my family, who mostly had never been to Tallahassee before, and definitely a great experience I will always remember. Service has gone down hill last my last few visits. Also have a reoccuring issue with the fish being undercooked. It sucks because this place used to be my favorite a few years ago but I can't justify paying $30 a plate when it doesn't hit the mark. Went for lunch during the workweek and they were not so busy and we were seated right away. My husband ordered the filet and i got the sole. Visiting Tallahassee this past weekend to see family, our local family member suggested this place. Claiming he's tried over 90% of the menu and had rave reviews, we were definitely excited. It was a Thursday at 10am, we wanted to sit outside, but they claimed no tables available due to covid. 2 tables remained empty outdoors. We were seated next to the host stand inside, and boy was it hot. There were fans blowing ahead, but dried the air out a bit, making it borderline uncomfortable. We waited 10 minutes for regular drinks, and beer was warm. Food took over 45 minutes, and we were eagerly hungry at that point. I made server aware I was unable to eat spicy, he said the jerk wahoo wasn't spicy, so I gave it a try. Having a feeling it would be mildly spicy. It was spicy, as well as the moduras dipping sauce, and the sauce they put together for me, which wasn't supposed to be spicy at all. No sour cream available that day, so I was in mild pain trying to eat my meal. The family member who suggested the place said he forgot I couldn't eat spicy, or else he wouldn't have brought me here. However, I do think dishes should be able to be a bit flexible, and a menu full of spicy dishes, doesn't appeal to enough patrons unless they're seeking it out specifically. In my defense, I knew jerk wahoo would be spicy, but I wasn't made aware how spicy it would ALL be. Not a single thing I ate wasn't spicy. Inside we were packed like sardines. The table seated next to us, I could have put my arm on his chair, we were that close. But outside they had covid precautions? Hmm, that's confusing. I went for dinner once. Ordered the duck and my husband had I think the steak. The dick was fabulous. The steak was a little undercook for what we ordered but it was still delicious. My colleague and I decided to try this place out. The eclectic menu really caught our eye. They do a daily menu, with only a couple of staple items that stay on. It was a tough choice but I went with the Mojo Chicken, shrimp, and Chorizo. It was a hearty portion that sadly I couldn't finish. The flavors were great with a hint of heat. This was a rice based dish so it possibly would taste great as leftovers (maybe eat all of the shrimp first). I also ordered a classic wedge salad. Nothing special, it is as you would expect. My colleague ordered the grilled octopus as an appetizer. YUM! I will come back to this place whenever that is on the menu. It was delicious with an incredible pesto sauce. And I don't even care for pesto! He also ordered the espresso pork chop with Mac n Cheese. I am not a fan of coffee of Mac n Cheese, otherwise I would have ordered it as well. He had 2 hefty slabs of pork chop. The plate looked really good, and he confirmed the taste was just as good. If the espresso scares you off like it did for me, don't worry. He said it didn't taste like espresso at all. Great meal, friendly staff, easy to find, and a great environment. We ate outside as there was a 20 min wait for a table indoors. Took my mom for an early Mother's Day lunch today and it was amazing. I've been a few times before but it was my moms first visit and she was more than impressed. We started with the maduros appetizer. My mom got the pork belly Bahn mi (SO GOOD!) and I had the pan seared tuna with pea shoot fried rice. We had to end with a dessert and decided on the maple ginger creme brûlée with raspberries and OHMYGOODNESS! We left so full and happy and with zero leftovers if that says anything. While in town for a long weekend, my parents decided to meet me here for a Monday work lunch. Parking is limited, but all three of us were able to secure a spot. The restaurant was bustling when we walked in, but there was a table right in front of the open kitchen. We ordered pretty quickly (we skipped out on the bread that is NOT complimentary, what). I ordered the blackened catfish, which was WAY too spicy but I liked it anyway. The red beans and rice complemented it well, as well as the fried okra and spicy jalapeño aioli. My parents entrees didn't seem to be as satisfactory, as they looked pretty heavy, but I was happy with my choice. Service was a little slow but overall, I enjoyed the lunch experience. Kool Beanz is worth a visit! We came here for a celebratory dinner and had the best time. We had a 5:30pm reservation and arrived a little late but they accommodated us since our group was large. The service was excellent and everyone friendly. Especially having to wrangle a large group like ours. I ordered the yucca fries to start and they were crunchy and the sauce them came with spicy! I also got to try the calamari which was amazing and the black bean cakes which were also good. For dinner I ordered the peppered flank in medium rare which is exactly how I like it. The garlic butter on top was amazing and the mashed potatoes and onion rings were equally delicious. Overall I had to be carted out of the restaurant I was so full! The only downside was that the ac wasn't working so well and we were all melting but the food was worth it! read more

The first time we came to Kool Beanz we loved it. But tonight was a disappointment. My SO's pork chop came out RAW, and I received the wrong dish. The power went out, which is fine, but we had ordered our food after power came back on. Not sure why a restaurant wouldn't have a generator, and I don't think there's really an excuse for serving raw food - particularly a $30 entree. They fixed the meals but didn't offer any sort of discount/comp and no manager came over to apologize. My fish was very average and not worth $30. Sadly, will not be returning. read more

Every time I tell someone I'm going to Tallahassee for work, Kool Beanz always comes up in conversation. Thankfully, I've now had the chance to dine here twice and each time been thoroughly impressed! The first time, we sat at the bar that lines the kitchen which was a really cool experience. To watch the food prepared right before your eyes will not only have you salivating but really inspired! My last visit, we opted to dine outside on their nice open air patio. The menu was a little different each time which is a plus; however, I always have a hard time deciding what to get. No matter what you're in the mood for, I'm convinced you can find something here that will fit the bill. Thai spiced lamb dumplings? Yep! Shrimp and grits? Sure! Duck breast with sweet potato fries? Yep! I really feel like I could eat here multiple times a week and never get bored. The dessert menu is hard to resist as well, although I regrettably haven't tried anything yet. I'm always too full from the hearty entrees and apps. Next time though, I'm definitely saving room! I love how their wine menu is presented on the wine bottles themselves. The service has always been attentive and friendly. It's pricier than what you'll probably spend at other restaurants in the area (and casual to boot), but the quality and experience is definitely worth it. Grabbed some lunch with friends at this establishment today. The steak was tender and perfectly seasoned and the mashed potatoes were a perfect match. Also, the Gorgonzola butter on top of the steak was phenomenal. The service was timely, efficient, and superb. The swordfish was the perfect mix of seafood with an Asian spice. I cannot believe it took me so long to find this place. They have all the classics. For the price definitely the best steak in town. And their onion rings are the best I have ever tasted. Excellent duck. They provision it out of a farm in Indiana. It's a peking duck so it's not rubbery like most places. Excellent flavor great texture. The octopus I would only give a three star they need to marinate it for at least 24 hours and Grill it. it is not easy to get good octopus in United States. The best I have ever had outside of Greece is at the Greek isles in Fort Lauderdale. I would put cool beans right up there with farm to table except it is probably about 20 to 30% cheaper. Great value for a place to eat once a week. Far less expensive than the huntsman much better food. I still do love that Huntsman cocktail though read more
