Kopitiam...I'm sad to say it has lose its charm. I remember a year ago when I first discovered it, it was such a nice spot!! But what happened now..the cleanliness dropped significantly, wall decoration is full of dust, staff attitude is just..meh. I'm not sure why. Today I went for the kaya toast, the toast was burnt until it is black and they still passed it to me. I discovered it and quickly asked for a new order. They remade it for me, gave it to me without feeling sorry, all they wanted is to close the store. No thank you, not a word of sorry. The food is amazing. I am so happy Kopitiam has a great space to sit and eat now. It's really cute and trendy inside their new location. The food is affordable and authentic. hands down the best malaysian spot in the city. ive been to malaysia, and my wife is malaysian as well, and we both love the authenticity of the dishes. the criss cross shroom are so good i want to kidnap the chef who makes it. and i think they sprinkled crack in the white coffee. the decor is warm and friendly; thought was put into everything from the exposed beams in the ceiling, to what kind of handsoap is used in the bathrooms. the staff is fun, friendly, and energetic. if you want to avoid a packed house, hit it up during the week. and do try Kai's desserts; proceeds go to paying for his culinary education! read more

SO HAPPY I FOUND THIS! After going to Malaysia and Singapore a few months back, I've been craving kaya toast, and I was soooo excited when I found that this place has it that I went out of my way just to get it. Chef Kyo is proud of her Nyonya heritage, and it shows in her lovingly composed (and delicious!) food and passion when she talks about it. Walking into her shop for the first time was like walking into an old friend's place where you catch up over Teh Tarik and swap stories about where the best food around is. (Hint: it's right there). Try the nasi lemak (coconut rice) -- fragrant, accompanied with lovely spicy anchovy sambal. Finish with a peanut muachi, warm and and lightly sweet. The weekly coffee shipment from Malaysia (so the beans are fresh) was unfortunately held up, so I'll have to come back for that the next time I'm there. read more

Nasi lemak was pretty damn tasty although the presentation was a bit underwhelming... but, to be fair, i did get it to go. A nice combo of salty, sweet, and spicy, and anchovies had a nice crunch to them. Also tried the kuih talam, which was also pretty good - an interesting fusion of salty (coconut topping) and sweet (pandan gel (?) Base). Overall, pretty good food and fast service. read more

I came here as I was getting off the train and saw this tiny shop. They only have a few things on the menu and it was very straightforward. Coffee, entrees, snacks. I opted for the nasi lemak because I always get that when I go have Malaysian food. The wait took a while because there was quite a bit of people but it wasn't too long. I took it to go to bring home. It was a ball of rice covered with anchovies marinated in a spicy chili sauce with a hard boiled egg on the side. It was very delicious and for $5.50, it was very fair. The rice and the fish combination was a good balance. A little spicy and the rice was coconut flavored. I will come back to try other things or maybe just get the nasi lemak over and over again. read more

I'm Malaysian and I'm extremely familiar with BabaNyonya food, so I know what I'm talking about. Kopitiam's food is extremely authentic. The nasi lemak is generously topped with anchovies sambal and an entire hard boiled egg! (Fellow Malaysians, how often do we get that in Malaysia?!) The muah Chee is the bomb. It reminds me of my childhood. The first time I ate it, I cried with extreme happiness. The Kaya is so authentic too! I've been looking all over Chinatown for good kaya(because I can't make it myself) and I finally found THE place! The kaya butter toast, omg where do I start? The toast is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.. and the kaya adds a yummy finish to it. They also have the half boiled eggs with special sauce that compliments the toast! Oh and I found out that they make their kaya every two days - glad to know they keep their food fresh all the time! I heard their weekend specials are pretty epic too! My friends tried their oyster omelette and bak out Teh and couldn't stop raving about it. Can't wait to try it for myself! What tops the food is the the friendly environment this tiny place is built in. Yes, it's a tiny place, but Chef Kyo and her friendly staff are ever ready to make you feel comfortable. Just strike a conversation with Kyo and you won't find yourself standing around awkwardly while waiting for a seat! The best thing about it is when the entire place - both customers and staff are engaged in one big conversation. Now thats what i remember about the traditional kopitiams back home. Checked out this place on a whim while getting tattooed at First Class Tattoo across the street and was totally blown away by the food and drinks. I HIGHLY recommend the white coffee and the pulut inti (blue sticky rice with shredded coconut). They were suggested to me by their friendly staff and I loved both. Very happy that this re-opened even closer to home. The LES has been hitting all the right notes. The food is solid - love all the noodles, Kaya toast, desserts, and the best nasi lemak that I've had in a while. Get anything that features pandan. It's such a subtle flavor unique to SE Asia. I was a totally uncultured tourist and ordered the blue rice dessert that I saw on my friend's social media post. There's actually two different ones, and I still don't know what the actual Malaysian names of them are. The person taking my order didn't make fun of me for that, which I really appreciated. I ordered one of each and enjoyed the toasted coconut topping one. The jam topping just wasn't my preference, but the rest of my group really enjoyed it. I'm so glad I got to try them both and am definitely interested in going back to try other desserts. The place is very small though, so try to go during off hours if you want a seat. read more

Love this hole in the wall find! Authentic Malaysian desserts and savory dishes. I tried the spicy anchovies with peanuts on coconut rice and white coffee - both was delicious! The spicy anchovies was salty and flavorful pairing nicely with the rice. The white coffee was different than anything I've ever tried. Stopped by here a few weeks ago when I was in NY & I was pretty excited since it's been years since I've had Malaysian food. Didn't expect this to be a matchbox store, but it's cool; reminded me of the teeny eateries in Tokyo. This place literally seats 4 people. The food was super-cheap: bowl of Nasi Lemak for less than $6, friendly staff. When I got it, I was a bit disappointed that it was "just" dried fish & beans served with rice, an egg, and cucumbers. But hey, everything tasted pretty good & for $6, it's a good value. I guess I didn't expect for it to be street food, which is what it was. Wish I stopped by one more time before I left. I rarely give reviews, so when I do it's because of a very positive experience. The food is fabulous, authentic, and a reflection of the love put forth by the owner, Kyo, a truly wonderful person. I had their specialty, the Coconut rice with dried anchovies and cucumber. It was great so I ordered another dish, the stingray. This flaky easy to eat white fish was wonderfully prepared with Malaysian spices and wrapped in a vegetable husk of some sort. Awesome street food presented with foil wrapped around it all. I also highly recommend their White Coffee. I'm not even a coffee lover but thought I'd go ahead and try another specialty. Wow! Go for it. Also, it is relatively low caffeine content. Great for end of day treat. Finally, the Mochi is unlike any other I've ever had. They make it in-house and has a covering very different than typical treat in a Japanese restaurant like I normally might go. The staff are proud of it and should be. Lastly, the owner and her team are wonderful and really want to build a relationship with customers and community. Some day there will be more of these restaurants. I just came in for a cup of coffee ($4!) and it was gross! There was no flavor, it was like a cup of hot water. There was a group ahead of me and I think they were just rushing to get orders done and seeped all the coffee grounds together which made the coffee flavorless. Maybe next time I'll go in for food because it smelled great and the servers were super nice. read more

The best place!! If you want Malaysian food don't even bother running around in the city. This is the place! Wish she has several locations so I don't have to come all the way down to canal but until then I will. It is well worth it. Their food is real as it can be. To keep her food so close to what original Malaysian food should taste like she doesn't even replace her ingredients but directly imported from Malaysia to make this happen. What a passion! Everything I tried so far is just phenomenal! Wish I took some photos so I can upload. Maybe I will do that next time and write another review! I can't wait to go again! I so recommend this place. A cozy little place with a chill ambiance and delicious food. We had one of the tables without the benches, and extremely uncomfortable triangular small stools. However, we managed. We had a variety of things - the pandan butter toast, the nasi lemak, the shroom, spicy cold sesame noodles, and a couple of dessert items. Everything was great but the shroom really stood out - the most flavorful mushrooms with red chillies, coconut, onions and curry leaves. It was very spicy but the coconut rice complemented it really well. I'd go again just for that. Overall, the portions run on the small side but that isn't a problem because you can try multiple things. read more
