Finally I visited this place. Came on Presidents' Day and it was pretty empty. It is a cafe so you order at the counter. Very cozy space and a place where I would get coffee. The kopi Tarik was very tasty similar to a viet coffee but not as strong. We ordered the nasi lemak which was ok. For the price I was thinking it would be a larger meal and other garnishes. The oh chien was very good. You can taste the oyster and omelette was a little under which I like. They spicy stir fried duck tongue was delicious. This is not your typical Malaysian cuisine; you will not find Hainanese chicken, roti canai, or mee goreng. I'm told this is similar to street food in Malaysia. Everything on their menu sounds delicious, it was difficult to choose which items to order. The stand outs for me are their Nasi Lemak, Pulut Pangang, and Pan Mee (but honestly, almost everything on their menu is amazing). Whether the rice or soup dishes, they were bursting with flavor and fragrant. I especially love their spicy sambal sauce and adds an extra kick to the dishes! The Milo French Toast could use a stronger milo flavor. It reminds me of Hong Kong style french toast maybe because of the condensed milk. The dish that was a little disappointing was the Oyster Omelette. I felt like I was eating overcooked scrambled egg with oysters so small you can barely taste it (won't order this again). Also, this cafe restaurant seems to be very big on anchovies as most dishes appears to have some variation of anchovies ingredient (a plus for me as I love anchovies). Their prices are a little expensive for their portions. Some of the snacks only comes in one piece. Rice and noodle bowls are also smaller than usual. Do not expect to be full from one main. Interior is nice, somewhat hispter but still has an ethnic vibe. They have a combination of street style seating with round tables and stools, tall stools by the windows, as well as regular tables and chairs and long benches. This is definitely one of my new favorite restaurants! My daughters and I shared the Hokkien Mie, the Cheong Fun and the Nasi Lemak, plus a very refreshing lychee drink that was served in a bag. The food was so flavorful and the tastes so complex. Everything was amazing. The staff was friendly -- you order at the window and they bring your food to you, and then you bring your dirty dishes to a tub. I'm going to pass on lattes after having a taste of the pulled white coffee. At Kopitiam, they use a Malaysian pre-ground coffee that is pre-mixed with sugar and milk powder. The beans are roasted in milk and olive oil. They use a technique called "pulling", where a pitcher filters the coffee grounds. A splash of condensed milk gets add to another cup/pitcher. It gets poured back and forth until it creates the froth. Absolutely insane and delicious! Hub and I had the Nasi Lemak, (the traditional staple of Malaysia of coconut rice w/ egg, cucumber, and anchovies with sambal sauce) Pulut Panggang (baked sticky rice w/ lemongrass spicy shrimp floss in lemongrass samal sauce), Kaya toast, and a crepe-like layer cake, one plain and one w/ chocolate. The Nasi Lemak was no frills, simple and to the point. The sambal sauce went nicely with the coconut rice and anchovies. We loved it. The Pulut was interesting. It had a very grainy texture. The lemongrass samal sauce was spicy so def use in moderation. We also enjoyed the Kaya toast, it had rich coconut pandan jam slathered on two thick pieces of toast. According to NYT, Kyo's mother spends "an hour and a half vigilantly stirring coconut milk, eggs, palm sugar and fresh pandan leaves in a double boiler to make kaya, coconut jam". No wonder it's good. As for the crepe-like layer cake, it was moist and dense compared to Lady M's crepe cake. Kopitiam's version goes well with the white coffee or teh tarik (hand-pulled tea). The owner, Kyo was friendly and assisted us with questions. The store is extremely small with only a handful of chairs. As it's meant for a snack shop, it's either take-out or eat quick and go. Now that we discovered this lil' gem (thanks to the raving reviews), we def will return again to try other things! read more

I eyed Kopitiam on yelp for about a month, before actually going. And when I finally did... I almost completely walked past it. It really IS a tiny hole in the wall, with about 5 seats total. Pretty hot to sit inside and eat, but there's the plus of being surrounded by the sweet aroma of whatever's being cooked up in the kitchen, that is directly behind the counter. Careful if you're not planning on doing laundry any time soon though, because those flavors DO follow you out the door through your hair and clothes. Worth it, in my opinion :P Anyway. The point of the review was to praise the special that they had, on the day that I went. The holy Ba Kut Teh. Oh my goodness, this was so beautiful. Compliments to the chef! The broth was so sweet and flavorful. The pork meat slid right off the bone, and the rice that accompanied it was oily and aromatic, complimenting the Ba kut teh perfectly. I wish this were made every day. We also ordered: Otak otak- a spicy fishcake wrapped inside a banana leaf. This was just alright to me. Muah chee- Yum! Anybody who loves mochi. This is just that, except hot and rolled in a blend of peanut, a mixture of different sugars, and toasted sesame. So good. Teh'c'peng kosong- Iced non-sweetened malaysian milk tea. Very good, but $4.50 for a rather small cup, was a bit pricy :S Bandung- Rose milk; interesting, but a bit too sweet for me. (I ended up mixing it with the teh'c'peng kosong, which was really good). I really want to like this place. Like the vibe a lot. I usually love Asian fusion. I am super open minded about that and have embraced restaurants this type and I am one of those Williamsburg foodie hipster myself that people condemn for being a gullible market for overpriced artisanal things - as I don't mind paying more for a comfortable experience. The problem is that the dishes they make, just didn't click. Something is missing. I get it that they try to be modern, but they lost that depth of umami-ness you usually find in Asian dishes. Came here with my girlfriend at around 11 on a Sunday for a late breakfast. We were a little groggy from the night before having been woken up at 2 a.m. by our party boy neighbor and his party pals but the wonderful flavors and caffeine concoctions woke me right up. We both had cham, a coffee/tea/condensed milk combo. A little more bitter than you'd think, as the tannins in the tea really come through in a big way but still quite good. I started with a curry puff to whet the appetite. The gf said it could do with more salt but I thought it was good as is. We then shared the peanut sugar french toast and the fish ball soup, both of which absolutely slapped. The french toast had that floofy fluff I crave and all of it was covered in the peanut-y goodness. Really good. Not as sweet as I was expecting but I mean that in a good way. The quarters are a bit cramped but it's not diner or restaurant. More of like a quick snack. It was a little stuffy inside which fogged up my glasses but that's the least of my worried. I ordered the blue sticky rice with toasted coconut, peanut sesame mochi and spicy sesame cold noodle to go. The mochi was a expected. Chewy, fresh and delish. The spicy sesame cold noodles were good to me. I ended up putting the entire sauce in there and it was way too spicy. I felt my lips burning off but that's the kind of spicy I like. They did not have the blue rice with coconut ready so I replaced it with a Kaya toast. It did not disappoint. It was sweet with a hint of salty from the light butter. I will go again to try the blue rice with coconut. The wait for food was a bit long but what would you expect. They are made to order. Is not premade and sitting around. You get fresh food. The food was EXCELLENT and very very reasonably priced!! We ordered the pandan chicken for apps - I was surprised by how great it was; as you unwrapped the banana leaf package, very moist and juicy pieces of chicken revealed themselves which tasted great with the tangy dipping sauce! While seating is limited inside the shop, there is a bench outside as well so you don't have to do cash & carry with your food. (And the people watching at Dimes restaurant next door is quite entertaining as you wait/eat on the bench.) I got the Pulut Panggang and Soft Boiled eggs and mixed them together- so good!
