Cute little shop for desserts or a quick bite. I liked the pandan cake, it wasn't too sweet. The white coffee was more like a latte without the foam, it was ok as I prefer my coffee a tad stronger and without sweetener but if u use sugar then you'll prob like it. I also had the nesi lamak which was ok, it's similar to the anchovies u can get at Korean supermarkets as bonbon/ apps. I usually eat this over rice as a meal so it wasn't new for me. I really like their weekend specials, mochi and kaya toast(not recommend for take out) my friend love their sesame noodle. Hand pour milk tea is authentic, but a bit too sweet for me. I think in the anchovy rice, the anchovy is kinda hard to chow which is the only downside for the dish. White coffee's flavor is bit mild. You order at the counter at Kopitiam. Walk in through rustic wooden doors and a bright, breezy seating space greets you and the right and left. White table tops, plastic chairs. So far, so Malaysian. Someone greets you at the counter that doubles as the cashier, no maitre d' to show you to your table here, you pick up a menu (a laminated, letter-sized paper) and specials on a pink board (look closely, you might missed it, as I did). The offerings are (mostly) Malaysian, with a few Chinese influences thrown in, bearing testament to the new partnership between Ms Pang and Ms Tsai. The vibe on the Thursday evening that I was there was bustling, vibrant with many large-ish groups chatting, as you would in a typical Malaysian kopitiam (coffee shop). You can tell special care has been taken to recreate this ambiance many miles away from home - I appreciated the fact that cutlery was offered out of containers by the counter and consisted of chopsticks, spoons and forks. No knives please. We can carve a tomahawk steak with a spoon and a fork thank you very much. Even the decor on display; keep an eye out for a novel by acclaimed Malaysian writer Tan Twan Eng, proudly shown off, in the bathroom. The lobak was excellent - ground meat in beancurd skin, deep fried. The oh-chien is the best showcase of what a partnership between Malaysian and Taiwanese restaurateurs can bring - both countries have a version of the dish, but this one was served with sweet chili sauce AND sambal. But the pan mee stole the show - a very Malaysian version of a soup noodle - with the soup being a broth based on anchovies, mushrooms and pork and the noodle component, hand-torn discs of wheat that were still chewy to the bite. The old establishment was well known for their white coffee and kaya toast - both still staples on the menu. They do their drinks well - the white coffee still as good as I remembered it when Kopitiam was nothing more than a shopfront with 5 seats on a good day. The pulut inti (sweet glutinous rice topped with coconut) was good, the ondeh-ondeh (glutinous rice balls with a palm sugar filling) was strangely, purple and a little grainy. Probably for the Instagram masses. The good people behind this beautiful, new space have obviously done very well., timing-wise. As the front pages fill with stories of an establishment ever more willing to vilify 'foreignness' , NYC seems to have taken a stand to embrace the exotic. Ms Pang has been kept very busy with media outlets paying homage to her brave endeavor to feature food from a tropical, South-East Asian country, and never have the words pandan, kaya and nasi lemak been spoken, typed and shared so far away from her shores. While the one '$' sign on this Yelp page probably needs an upgrade, for those Manhattanites who are not fans of 'traveling' for food, Kopitiam is probably your best bet for 'authentic' Malaysian fare. Take a break from regional Chinese in 'Chinatown North'. Thai food in Hell's Kitchen is so 2016. This year, we're having Malaysian. read more

Went to check out the new location / new menu and frankly it was disappointing. Oyster omelette - at $12 an order you would think there would be more than 2 pieces of oysters in there but that was all I saw / ate. There was also some very visible gelatinous in between the egg which was off-putting. Kaya toast - $5 an order for two small pieces of bread. Which is fine.. I guess. It tasted fine but was nothing special. If Yakun Kaya Toast was 8-9/10 then this would probably be a 5-6/10. Pan mee - the noodles were very thick and much tougher than they should be. After soaking the noodles for 10+ mins after it's served then it gets to the right chewiness but it really should be edible when served.. which it wasn't. What irked the most was I tried to ask if it can be served without the fried anchovies -- they hemmed and hawed and said no.. and I thought ok fine maybe it's prepared in a way that's too hard to customize so I ordered anyway. When it came out - the fried anchovies were basically dumped on top at the end... why couldn't you just NOT add it??? Muah chee - again it's fine.. but it was better at the old location. It was frankly too soft when it should be chewy. Imagine something that should be closer to mochi skin in chewiness coming closer to ice cream. Sesame noodles - again it was fine but in terms of noodle quality can't really compare with most places in NYC. If you want better / smoother white round noodles.. little tong would be a better bet. Every time I find myself in chinatown looking for a place to buy take out, I make my way to Kopitiam. I have already tried the majority of the food items on the menu and they have never failed to meet my expectations. I love the chilled spicy sesame noodle as well as the nasi lemak, but the kaya butter toast is my absolute favorite. What I like about coming here is that I am able to have salty, spicy, and sweet foods all in one go. Kopitiam is definitely worth checking out, if not for their unbeatable prices. read more

Popped in for a bite this afternoon and was not disappointed - new Kopitiam was a pleasant surprised. Loved the space - light and welcoming and easy to find a good seat. Service was fast - food and servers and the tables were quickly cleaned and taken care of. We ordered Nasi Lemak, Pandan chicken, fishcake soup and coffee and everything was tasty, which chicken being simply amazing. Well I guess it's a lot to expect to get really authentic Malaysian food. This seems so impossible outside of Penang. For sure, the key ingredients are not easily obtainable. I haven't arrived home yet but the drinks are leaking from its baggies (no cups which is eco friendly but you need a better way to hold those bags up...) and the brown bag holding everything broke through bc oil was leaking from another item inside so everything eventually fell out. Tried the nasi lemak and it was so flavorful. There were so many levels of flavors in the anchovies. It was sweet and savory and then spicy. What I enjoyed the most was that the spicy flavors didn't overwhelm each flavor. It was subtle enough to give a kick and complimented the sweet and savory flavors very well. I also tried the pulut inti and it was very delicious. For those who are fans of coconut, this dish is definitely for you. The coconut tasted like real coconut and it was very fragrant. The rice by itself had no flavor by itself but matched with the coconut very well. I've gone here two days in a row and that should tell you how I'm becoming obsessed with this small Malaysian snack spot. On the first day I ordered an iced white coffee, nasi lemak, and the blue morning glory stick rice with toasted coconuts. The coffee was smaller than I expected for the $4.50 price tag, but it was absolutely delicious. It was my first time trying nasi lemak ($5.50) and it completely satisfied a craving I didn't know I had. The spicy anchovies mixed with the coconut rice was absolutely addicting. I do wish that it was less salty. Spice level was on point, even for a non-spicy seeking person like myself. The morning glory sticky rice ($3) was wrapped beautifully in a (lotus?) leaf with toasted golden coconut shavings packed on top. It was the right amount for a dessert and I love that it wasn't overly sweet. I went again today with my boyfriend because I couldn't get the place out of my mind. We both got an order of the Kaya toast ($3), which is LITERALLY crack on bread. It's basically some sort of green coconut flavor custard + butter on perfectly toasted thick bread. Along with the toast, we each got the hand-pulled black coffee (his iced and unsweetened ($4.50) and mine was hot and with condensed milk ($4) - both delicious) and another order of the morning glory for dessert. Space is on the small side - max seating is 4-5 tops. Plenty of people were on line today (Saturday) at around 11-12. Highly recommend to come to Kopitiam for small Malay/Singaporean bites. While I was there, I got the kaya toast, soft boiled eggs, belecan wings, hainanese chicken rice and muah chee. Out of those, I definitely enjoyed the muah chee the most. It was soft and chewy and came out nicely warm with a fresh sprinkle of finely chopped peanuts on top. Even though the menu said that it would be a 15 minute wait for it to come out, it only took about 5 minutes. Highly highly recommend - I enjoyed it even more than the fresh mochi from Japan which is probably the most similar dessert I can think of compared to this. The second most favorite item that I had was the kaya toast. Compared to the one I had in Singapore, I think that the kaya itself is slightly more sweet and wet and the bread is much more thick. I think one way to improve it would be to have the bread be more thin so it could crisp up more, or to simply toast the bread a bit longer. Overall though, I really enjoyed the kaya toast, especially when dipped in the soft boiled eggs. Upon first appearance, the soft boiled eggs didn't seem like they would be seasoned well enough, but the taste is actually very good and well-balanced - it is even delicious on its own without the kaya toast. In general, the belecan wings were very nicely flavored. Only problem, is that it was far too caramelized to the point of being burnt (skin was completely black and gave the bitter taste of char). Beyond that though, you can taste the sweetness of it and that it was nicely marinated - only problem with this is that it was too burnt. I wouldn't recommend you get the hainanese chicken at all. Chicken pieces are far far too thick. It was as if they just boiled a chicken and chopped huge chunks of it. The sauce that came with it was quite bland so it literally tasted like boiled chunks of chicken. Quite disappointing. The rice that came with it was fine and fragrant though. In general, I'd say just stick with the small bites, or the items that are more popular on the menu. We also got the fresh soy milk which came in a bag. I didn't try, but I did hear that it was good. In general though, they do seem to have quite an extensive and unique drink menu so would recommend venturing and getting something from there as well. read more

Believe all of the reviews!! The white coffee is so legit. I had to come back the next morning, walking alone in the cold since my friends didn't share the same coffee obsession as I did, to get me some more white coffee. The taste is completely different from anything I've ever had. Imagine the frothiness of a latte, except condense that flavor and mix it throughout the coffee. Then add a roasty toasty smell (like how you would a liquid smoke smell for smoked ribs). Yup, weird description, thus this coffee is indescribable. Some reviews say the coffee beans were roasted in butter, but the cashier told me they were roasted in olive oil. I say it's roasted in cocaine... cause it's that addicting. I'm from Singapore and have not been back for a year and won't be back for another half a year, so I was pretty glad to have found this place on Yelp. I ordered iced milo, Kaya toast and oyster omelet, and they were (obviously) not up to the standards of Singapore and Malaysia. The oyster omelet was bad, the milo was a little diluted and the toast was okay. If I were at Singapore, I would've rated this place one star, but since it reminded me of home, and since it also serves as a way to introduce people to Singaporean and Malaysian food, I rate this place three stars. Overall, it's quite reasonably priced, tastes average, but if you've never tried Malaysian food, it's a good enough introduction to it. I have been dying to try it out for the longest but never got a chance to since it's so out of my way. But today was the day, I had to! I order the Kuih Dadar and Penang White Coffee to stay and the Nasi Lemak and Pulut Panggang to go...might as well to taste it at home. Even though I stopped drinking coffee I made the exception to try and and it was absolutely goodddddddd. I was very impressed by the finely grated coconut in palm sugar of the Kuih Dadar...yummmmm! Later on in the day I finally tried the Nasi Lemak and the Pulut Panggang...I was able to taste the individual ingredients ssssssssssooooooo good, it brought me back home to Indonesia, very similar taste and culture. Very happy they got a bigger beautiful location but it's somehow lost its charm food wise. You walk in place your order and are given a number and bus your own table. They expanded their menu to many noodle and appetizer options and serve a variety of drinks now as well. Me and girl friend got fishball soup, nasi lemak and pan mee (pounded flat noodles with anchovies). The nasi lemak was too salty for me. It consisted of a fried egg, some fried anchovies and coconut flakes and a tiny plastic sauce canister of curry sauce. Fish ball noodle soup wasn't anything to write home about, pan mee I didn't try but my girl friend said "this isn't that good" ... I noticed some cute things like salted egg wings that look interesting along with their signature blue rice in leaf and a dessert option of that as well, loved their rice noodle at their old spot so I'll def try this place again. I really wanted to love this spot. I really really did. It pains me to write this review because I've been dying to find good cheap southeast asian cuisine hole in the wall. I guess because of all the other reviews, I was really let down from my heightened expectations. I tried to order all the savory dishes, but since I came for breakfast they were only serving breakfast items. (I think they should state that on the menu that only breakfast will be served within certain hours) here is what I ordered: Kaya toast: the paste was good; the toast was decent but they could've made it less sweet. It was just too much sometimes when I bit into the toast... Mua Chee: This was actually probably the only thing I felt was good about the menu. Warm and soft mochi with peanuts and sesame powder I can get behind ANY day. If I were to ever come back to this place (which will be unlikely...unfortunately) this would probably be the only thing I would order. Nasi Lemak: So to be fair..this is at half the price of nasi lemak anywhere else I have ordered from....but I was just very very unimpressed by this dish. There were only anchovies with peanuts and what I tasted to be in fish sauce. I couldn't taste the coconut flavors or any nuances with any type of curry...it was just uninspired Pulut Panggang: again, this tasted like it was almost straight out of a can steamed in sticky rice...I just wished that there was more effort into the savory dishes. The Teh Tarik was probably the saving grace from this store. I really enjoyed the coffee with condensed milk that felt really nice on a cold day. From the kitchen, it looks like they couldn't handle a lot of orders taht were coming in. They were trying to churn out from the lines and decided to serve food tha twasn't ready to be served. Tried the pulut panggang the other time, wasn't a big fan as it was a bit hard to eat outside and quite salty, but their nasik lemak is fire. Spicy and salty anchovies in sambal on a bed of velvety smooth coconut rice and fresh cucumber slices and creamy hardboiled eggs, pretty damn great. Thumbs up! Got the Pan Mee and it was decent. The portion came in really small and it was quite pricey. The environment there is nice and relaxing, it is also clean so that's a plus! I also tried their Nasi Lemak and it was very delicious. This is definitely a place to visit when looking for a snack, or a light meal. This modest coffee shop and eatery delivers on some very good Malaysian food, redolent with the spices of the country and complex with the five flavors in good Asian cuisine. The Nasi Lemak was a delight, a mound of fragrant rice that had good coconut flavor. The saltiness of the anchovies was offset by the sweetness if the sauce. With a few slices of cucumber as garnish, it was a solid winner. The Pulut Panggang , a log of glutinous rice with a inner core of minced lemongrass flavored shrimp thread, was beautifully presented wrapped in a striped green leaf. The garnish of cucumbers on the side provided a contrasting crunch and the sambal sauce on it added seasoning.The staples holding the ends was a modern touch perhaps necessitated by a need to seal with speed. Yes, string would have been more apropos, but at $5.50 an entree, one can't expect Master Chef presentations. The log was quite tasty, albeit a tad sweet when it came to the sambal sauce. Neither dish was overly spicy, perhaps that and the extra sugar a slight concession to the Americanized palate. Portions were good for one, if you are a hearty eater, order two meals or more. The place is clean but small, with two small counters and if I remember, four chairs. Chubby and burly folk, take your order to go, unless you want to cosy up to some stranger. Service here is on the slower side. This isn't fast food but food prepared with love. Be patient. The staff are sweet and the food is worth it. Don't bother trying to figure out the menu via the wall poster unless you are Malaysian and know the cuisine. Kopitiam is one of the best places in NYC, period. The food is BEYOND incredible, the people are friendly, the store is clean and bright. Even without the ridiculously reasonable prices, this place would warrant 5 stars. Once you factor the cost in, Kopitiam just became the best deal on the island. White coffee - divine. Frothy, light, nutty. This is easy to drink and effervescent. Gives you the slightest caffeine boost that won't leave you jittery. Is tall and light enough to go with your food without a side of water. Nasi Lemak - rich and flavorful. Served with fresh cucumber slices and coconut rice. Chewy fish, crunchy peanuts, savory sauce. Definitely a cut (or two) above nasi lemak I've had at other Malaysian places. Butter toast - DELICIOUS. I literally felt myself getting emotional as I bit into the pillows of crunchy cocaine toast sticking to each other with a generous smear of light, subtly sweet custard. This was absolutely heaven. Perhaps the best snack I've ever tasted. Crab cakes - weekends only. A salty crab/meat mix served inside a crab shell. This comes with a spicy, slightly fermented sauce and more cucumber.
