My favorite doughnut shop! It's very hard to find krispy kreme in nyc. There used to be 2 more shops in the city but somehow chain doughnut shops can't really survive in the area due to new yorkers' obsession with "eating healthy" and Penn is the only location standing still. This was only my second time ever having KK with the first time happening over 10 years ago. Although I didn't go to the place to pick the donuts up, luckily I had a coworker willing to complete the task. After eating various donuts (regular glazed, glazed raspberry filled, original filled original and chocolate Kreme, chocolate ice custard filled and glazed with lemon filling), they just aren't great. It's like a McDonald's to Shake Shack. It seems to be a fast food version of donuts. They also didn't have the new Reese's filled donuts, so minus points there as well. Ali has such an amazing personality and made my Krispy Kreme experience even better. He knows the history of apple pie and the Fourth of July (no pun intended) and can tell you all about it. He has such positive energy that is really contagious. He really deserves a raise and a promotion. Now I see people talking about how bad the customer service is, now I've personally never had a problem here or at any Krispy Kreme but like Penn Station the customer service must've been renovated. This is the closest KK to me, and I love how it's conveniently located close to the LIRR in Penn Station. I've tried a few different flavors at this location, but my top three have gotta be their Original, Boston Creme, and Creme Brûlée. After watching over a dozen Krispy Kreme stores close in the Upstate NY area, I thought that I would never live to sample the delicious sugary goodness of Krispy Kreme again... So my standards are extremely high when it comes to Krispy Kreme locations and this one loses points from the gate for not being a hot & fresh location or having seating. Just a simple fact. Second, I got extorted 20 cents to have a Smores doughnut in my 1/2 dozen when I got one recently. I was not informed of this ahead of time & it wasn't listed on the menu that I'd get extorted for that. Absolutely NOT cool. However, the doughnuts themselves met my standards for what you'd get in NC and at the hot & fresh locations (sans the "hot" part). The selection was adequate for my purposes. I thought they'd closed a while ago but was happy to see they are still open. I hold out hope to see an actual freestanding location someplace where you can get these "hot" but I'll just ask my family to take me or make a special trip when I get near those locations. Staff was okay but you'll get more of that friendliness if you go to one in NC or elsewhere in the South. read more
