And while Popeye's wins out most of the time because of it's close proximity, cheap prices and drive through/avoidance or the crazy clientele that frequent it, I have been contemplating my inaugural visit to KKC for quite some time. We put in an order for two 3-piece meals with biscuits, and a medium side of fries. We were told 15 minutes (ugh! freshness!) so we got in the car and drove around, then picked up our order and took it home. So the fries... meh, nothing outstanding. And honestly, fries are not good for you anyway, so skip 'em. The chicken, however, was on point. While I will say that the chicken was juicy and seasoned just right, the breading was super... dare I say it.... Krispy Krunchy! Located inside of a gas station with a cell phone store next door - talk about one-stop shopping. Came here late on Saturday night and they were almost out of chicken when we arrived so I ordered the 4-piece dark combo with extra honey butter biscuits. Crunch chicken, very flavorful the batter is a tad spicy and such a great price. The fries are seasoned fries and really good. The red beans and rice were good just needed a little more salt. The biscuits were soft and yummy with a big taste of honey. The corn is deep fried with a light coating of the same batter they fry the chicken with. Hopefully they normally have more texture than the ones we got. The dirty rice is a must, and the fries are good. Wow... definitely not what I expected from something in a gas station. I got it delivered so I can't speak to the ambiance there (the ambiance in my home is fantastic). It was delivered quickly and still piping hot. The skin was crunchy with big chunks of just the batter (yeah, you know what I'm talking about), but it wasn't overwhelming. I love shopping at gas stations. I remember as a kid (back in the stone age) even buying Christmas gifts for my Mom at a Martin's Gas Station across the street from where I lived. The upshot of all this is that buying delicious chicken in a gas station is about as cool as it gets. It should be clarified that they only share a space with the Citco station. KKC is an entity onto itself. The walls are peppered with giant pictures of fried chicken. It is a bit loud, but cool. The chicken is wonderful. Mom is crazy about it and so am I. We also love the deep fried corn (as did Christopher) and the mashed taters were very good. The biscuits are so much better than KFC. So is the chicken and taters. They also deliver for those of you who are afraid of gas stations. Give them a try if you like fried chicken. I was cold and hungry, so when I stopped for gas there, I figured why not just go for convenience and try it. I got chicken and I got my guy catfish. Brave, I know. The food was about what you'd expect from an urban gas station restaurant. They gave me 4 pieces in my 3 piece meal, and gave my guy 2 pieces of catfish and one chicken tender in his catfish order. I walked out as fast as I walked in. But today,I was driving down Peterson, and it was 12:15PM. I figured they must have hauled a load out of the deep fryer fairly recently because it was lunch time. Bingo. They were putting freshly fried pieces into the the counter. I ordered a wing, thigh, leg & breast ( just to make sure I could make a decent assessment). Even fresh out of the fryer, all the pieces I ordered were on the dry side. Now I love me some hot sauce on fried chicken, but I want to sprinkle it on the chicken before I eat it. Krispy Krunchy douses their chicken in hot sauce, coats it with the batter, then deep fries it. The vinegar in the hot sauce might be what drys the meat out. The Yelpers that commented on how crispy the chicken was were 100% correct. It's crispy as all get out, but it's not juicy. I order chicken from here at least twice a week and I even got my roommates to be obsessed with their food. Aside from their chicken, the fried corn on the cob is on point! Ok. This is the best friend chicken in the city in my opinion, but I'm not sure I can keep trying to order from here. I order the Krispy Wings often. And 7 out of 10 times they are out of wings. Which is odd. But they call and are usually pretty friendly when they call and ask me to substitute something for them and I gladly do and all is good. However the other day my boyfriend and I both ordered from here. He had never had it and I had gone on and on about how it's the best chicken in Chicago. He's a chef so I wanted to impress him with some of my fun food finds...I ordered my usual Krispy Wings and he ordered a Combo meal with mixed pieces. I wasn't surprised when I got the call asking for a substitution. Like I said it always seems to happen. I agreed to drumsticks. Not ideal but I didn't want it to ruin my evening. After reading the reviews on Yelp, we decided to give the chicken a try. Free delivery and a $15 minimum, as well as extremely reasonable prices are all factored into my rating. The chicken was delivered hot and it was crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. Not greasy, which is very important to me. The honey butter biscuits were kind of small but very tasty. The fries looked good and my boyfriend liked them. The one disappointment was the cole slaw. I LOVE cole slaw with my fried chicken and I can enjoy a variety of recipes. Here's the but. Both my boyfriend and I thought there was a weird and unappealing flavor to this cole slaw. I can't put my finger on what it was. Maybe it was just this batch? Amazing Krunchy chicken. Some of the best crunch with chicken I had in a while. The flats were the best because the extra bone kept it moist and was easy to dip in the sauce. Sweet lord, that is decadently delicious. I'd never heard of this place, but found it on GrubHub. $20 + tip and an hour later I had a giant feast that tasted like something straight out of the south (or what I'd imagine. I've never actually had fried chicken there.) I grew up as a child connoiseur of fried chicken and this is about the best I've ever had. Succulent inside and the breading is unbelieiveable. The portions are enormous for the price. Slaw was great, beans and rice great. Fried corn, little weird, but great (in a once-in-a-while treat kind of way.) I'm shocked if this place is operating out of a gas station?!?! It tastes like it should be featured on Diners, Dives, and DriveThroughs. Food travelled pretty well and the chicken was nice and crispy when it arrived. I imagine if you can shorten the travel time, it's even better. read more
