My wife and I visited a few days ago and really enjoyed this place. The restaurant is a little hard to find, as there's no sign over the door yet. Once inside we got the traditional Japanese greeting and friendly service. The menu is small, but what they had all looked good. We tried pretty much every one of their sides and a few of their bowls. Everything tasted great! The amount of food you get compared to the price ($9) is also incredible. Kay's Japanese Kitchen is the most underrated restaurant on center street. The food is ACTUALLY authentic, fairly priced, and wonderfully staffed! I'd recommend playing it safe with Katsudon if it's your first time. You can't go wrong. It's a 5 out of 5 stars for sure. read more

As a half Japanese person, I've grown up eating Japanese food my whole life. This place is THE BEST. Everyone who works here is so kind and everything tastes like a good quality home cooked meal. It reminds me of my mom's cooking and takes me back to the summers I've spent in Japan cooking with my grandparents. In a town full of mediocre Asian restaurants K's was such a good find. I've been here twice in the past 3 days and I'm honestly surprised how few customers there are. But set that thought aside and come on in to enjoy a home cooked meal. Upon coming into to the restaurant you'll be greeted by the host, the husband of the cook. Service is quick and food is also served quickly. So far I've had the oyakudon and shiobutadon. The serving size was perfect. Both were delicious and tasted just like home cooked meals. I don't usually give 5 stars but I think K's Japanese Kitchen deserves 5 stars because of its authenticity, quality, and price. I got the katsudon domburi. I was a little surprised that there was a cooked egg on the top of the katsudon (there's not egg in the picture on the menu) but it was really good! I'm not sure what they mix in with the rice but it made it more savory which I loved. We also got the karaage which is fried chicken. I was pleasantly surprised by the tenderness of the chicken and the crispness of the skin. The prices are really reasonable for the amount of food you get. The owners and staff were all super friendly and nice. Great place, highly recommend. read more

I tried this place for the first time for lunch and was very pleased with the whole experience. I had the Shiobutadon (Salted Pork). It was tender and flavorful. The food is decent enough, but the service is AWFUL! And when I say awful, I don't just mean slow or forgetful, but outright adversarial. We made a reservation for 14 people, and ended up having 17 people show up. They accommodated the first two extras, but then put up a nearly 30 minute fight, including a call to the owner who asserted, as the manager had, that they had already been accommodating enough and that it was our fault for having a larger party than planned. If this were a Michelin-starred restaurant with a month-plus waiting list and meticulously planned seating, I could understand that. But it wasn't. It's a casual bistro that had more than 50% open tables at the time, including two that were adjacent to our party. I've done catering for over 15 years, and I've executed events with planned seating for over 300 guests. I've never had a single one where seating charts didn't have to be adjusted last minute. And I've always made it work just fine. Somehow these guys couldn't figure out how to grab a chair from an adjacent table and put it at the end of our table, because the owner says that's very complex and difficult and requires extensive planning. By contrast, I took a group to another local Japanese restaurant the next city over just last Friday, without even making a reservation. I just walked in about 10 minutes ahead of my group and let them know we would have at least 10 people, but possibly as many as 16. Without even consulting a manager or owner, the hostess just looked at the dining area (which is smaller and less open-plan than K's), figured out how to get us started with 10, and came up with an idea for accommodating more if they showed up. That's proper service and ingenuity, and she did it on the fly. I don't know if K's realizes that they are just a block down the street from a convention center. They can't afford to be this incompetent at handling unexpected groups, or they're guaranteed to draw poor reviews from convention-goers. I've already seen one review from another person in my group, and the owner doubled down on their inflexible attitude in their response to that one. I imagine they'll do the same here, insisting that it's all our fault for underestimating our party size. But as I said, I've been catering for longer than this place has been in business, and I keep getting jobs because I'm good at adapting, which happens almost every single job. K's needs to learn to adapt, or they simply have no business in the service industry. read more

Karaage my madre, this is the whipped cream to the icecream place to go to for your nice rice bowls. The Karaage is so crunchy and like a piece of heaven, must be one of the Japanese god's little gold digger nuggets, and the meat here is prime, more prime than Amazon. Although the portions look small, you start eating it and then you realize it's too much and think about how you shouldn't have judged the amount of food from the start. Enjoyed my meal and experience at K's. The korokke were perfectly cooked. Nice soft potato inside and crisp and nicely textured outside. Everything has a Japanese home cooked taste. Karaage and gyoza are what you would expect in Japan. The salted pork had a good texture and flavor and was moist and delicious. The prices for appetizers are great. $2.50 for gyoza or korokke or karaage. If you are looking for home cooked Japanese style food then this hits the spot. I will return again. read more
