Updating my 5 Star review from 3 years ago to a 1 star review due to horrible treatment from management. We have been going to Kuchi for years and a group of 7 of us went for a colleagues birthday on a Tuesday afternoon for lunch. Two of the seven arrived 5 minutes before the rest of us. The manager would not seat them at a table until the rest of the party was present. Normally, I would understand this, as i worked in the restaurant industry for 8 years, but our table was the only table in the entire restaurant (if that doesn't give you a sign this place is going downhill, idk what does) Anywho, now onto the drinks. Everyone orders a round, I order a cosmo. The server didn't know what a cosmo was, so he asked the manager. The manager then came to the table to ask if a cosmo was a martini, and if it should be served in a martini glass. The manager also asked what Jameson was when someone at our table ordered it. My cosmo came out looking like a Shirley Temple... fully equipped with a cherry inside... I didn't say anything at this time because I was here for my friends birthday and it wasn't that big of a deal. Fast forward- food comes out, we all eat and it's time for our checks. I only ordered two cosmos on my tab, and when my bill came it was $27.00. The person next to me has two drinks and a full hibachi lunch and their bill was $25.00! I then asked the server why my drinks were so expensive. Everyone else at the table has 6.00 drinks and my "cosmos" are 13.00 and served as a spiked Shirley Temple?! The manager/owner then proceeds to fight me saying that there are three different types of liquor in a cosmo. When I tried to calmly question the price she snapped and cut me off and wouldn't let me finish my sentence. The most humiliating part is she is truly losing the service of all 7 of us due to her rude actions and words. I wasn't wanting a free drink, I was just wanting justification on why my well vodka drink cost 13.00 when everyone else's cost 6. She was also fully aware that we were there celebrating a birthday and she still had to come off rude and aggressive. What a SHAME to lose the business of the only table you had in the restaurant over the manager feeling like she needed to prove a customer wrong. I will not be returning and unfortunately the manager and owner is 100% the cause for that. read more

Absolutely disappointed with the entirety of our visit. The quality is poor when compared to Kobe's. I always order my filet & Shrimp and usually (in my experience) your steak is cooked separately from everyone else's so you get the full 5-6oz you pay for. OMG!!! Absolutely in love! I am a former Carrollwood area inhabitant and grew up eating at Arigatos once a week with my family. I have eaten at Japanese steakhouses all across the country from Hawaii to the West Coast and back to the East Coast. This has far surpassed my expectations. We began with the Ninja roll which was delivered within five minutes of ordering. Right after we finished our soup and salad, the roll arrived and when we finished our roll, our chef arrived. I was excited to try this restaurant but was disappointed. We went after a movie and at around 945pm, it was super busy. Our waitress took out drink order. The Hot Sake was cold and she brought us 2 larges instead of 1 (we were a party of 5). It took her 3-4 reminders to bring me a straw for My water. I asked that one of my roll be made with no fish eggs and to add Cream cheese. As the waitress was setting It down she noticed the fish eggs and brought it back to the kitchen. When she Brought it back everyone was already halfway into their meal. So I go to eat it and noticed it had no cream cheese. I called the waitress over to tell her so I didn't get charged for the cream cheese. She offered to fix but I declined. I was already annoyed and just wanted to eat dinner. The plate was decorated very lavishly with all our rolls uniquely placed and a giant hand carved carrot tower. The place is very modern looking with blue neon accents and a couple water features. They did a awesome job renovating the old Bennigan's location. We shared 3 rolls for lunch. A Philadelphia, Out of Control and a Painted Lady. They were all fresh and very good. The Painted Lady had larger pieces than usual (over stuffed?) and it was a spicy one too. I was very excited to order off the lunch menu only to be told that the lunch menu does not apply on Sundays and I would have to order off the dinner menu (though there was no note of that anywhere on the menu). When I placed my order, our Chinese server had a difficult time understanding me and I had to point to what I wanted. She had difficulty understanding my boyfriend's order as well. This was our first time going here. We're new to the area and have been wanting to try a Japanese steakhouse. As other yelpers have mentioned, they were hardcore about getting our drink order wicked fast. I had water and my fella had a warm sake. We had hibachi jazz/the Kuchi dinner for two. It included steak, chicken, shrimp, scallops, and lobster (with soup, rice, noodles, and veggies). I do believe it was $49/$50. That's wicked low compared to what I'm used to. I think the same meal at our place back home cost about $80. The food was a little different than I'm used to. I'v never had green beans and corn in the fried rice (and they aren't allowed to make spicy rice on the grill). I have to say I didn't love the rice. The steak/chicken was pretty juicy. The shrimp and lobster were decent. I never eat the scallops. I'd say the food was pretty ok. I think we're going to check out another place before possibly heading back. I give the food 3 stars and our chef 4.5 stars. Tanaka (not sure of the spelling) was the highlight of it all. He was hilarious and kept it lively the entire time. He even had a squirt bottle of sake to do some crazy contest. My boyfriend and another male patron kept trying to outs rink each other. He had us smiling the entire time. Came in from out of town and had a craving for hibatchi and we were not disappointed! An appetizer of sushi was fresh and delicious. Then came the show and the fabulous food. This chef performed the best display of a typical hibatchi dinner that I have ever seen (and we go often). His cooking skills were great and his personality was awesome! Don't let the outside fool you! I'm not going to sugar coat it...the outside looks like a hot mess and super cheap. Once you get inside though I promise you'll be shocked. The interior is clean and well decorated, you'd never expect it from looking at the exterior. On to the food. I only did the sushi menu as I find every hibachi is gimmicky and flavorless. As far as sushi goes their concept is modern and "fancy". Their main focus is on specialty rolls as opposed to simple nigiri but they make it work with the presentation. I call their sushi "fancy" because you get rolls decorated with sauces and even get a carved daikon sculpture in your plate. For me, it's a bit frilly but it wasn't bad at all. They have a few rolls that flirt with fruit parings and other non-traditional flavors which I don't mind and actually appreciated because it was done subtly and didn't overwhelm. If you're really into rolls this place is for you. The servings were large. And the price was ok. They averaged about 12-13 per roll. The service was a bit slow but we ordered a lot, and the carved daikon looked like it would have taken a few minutes to do. Overall, I gave this place 4 stars because it was the complete opposite of what I expected to get when I first walked in. It's worth a shot if you love sushi. read more

The experience I had at Kuchi was bar none compared to other Hibachi joints I've been to. From start to finish, Kuchi provides a lot more amenities compared to what you'll receive anywhere else. First, they start off by providing a clean, warm wet towel to wipe your hands with. Then they display a great show and friendly chefs (think "squirting Sake into your mouth via a baby bottle" friendly). After a great meal, you are given vanilla ice cream. Disclaimer- this is the first sushi restaurant we've tried in the area, we didn't try hibachi yet With that being said, the sushi didn't disappoint. Sushi and hibachi are on opposite sides of the restaurant which is nice if you want a quiet evening you don't hear much of the noise from the hibachi side. Now for the food- my favorite is the mushroom soup. They have the classic Japanese restaurant salad with ginger dressing. I always get philadelipa rolls and tuna rolls, Philly rolls come with 8 pieces and the tuna came with 6. I think that's a fair amount for the price they charge. The spicy mayo is delish and they didn't charge extra for it. On this trip they gave us free vanilla ice cream- nice touch. We will certainly be back here again. read more
