After watching the sunset on Haleakala we decided to head to the Kula Lodge. We were greeted promptly with a smile and instantly brought to our table. It was relatively busy but we were all brought glasses of water. Soon the waitress would come and ask us if we wanted any appetizers. I ordered a Maui Onion Soup. The soup was ok in my opinion, but still good. I'm sure it's because it's not what I'm used to the French Onion Soup where I am from. I then ordered the Wagyu burger with fries. I got it medium and it was cooked to perfection. The burger was so juicy and mouth watering. The fries were also cooked to perfection. All in all the service was great and that burger just hits different!! I would definitely recommend anyone give this place a try. I'm sure the deserts were good but I was full. Next time I make it to Haleakala I will definitely hit this place up. read more

Last time I was here was almost 20 years ago. I remember ordering an eggs Benedict and enjoying the fantastic view in the morning. Fast forward to today , since I had time in the morning, decided to take a drive up the mountain to have breakfast. Some things doesn't seem to change and sure glad I made the trek ! Ordered side of Kim chee fried rice with an egg...and it was great! Friendly and attentive servers, a great view of north and west Maui, great food and coffee... They bake their pastries right there fresh and have their own pizza oven ! From Kahului it takes about 25-30 min to drive up Routes 37 and 377, up about 4000 ft. In addition to dining, there is a small art gallery featuring works of a local artist, and cottages to rent. Def will try to visit again now and then when im in Maui ! read more

This is a gem. I have family on Maui so I frequently travel there. This is lodge is fairly new and absolutely beautiful. For a place that would be known for its mainly for the views the food is actually really good! I do plan to lodge here one day and will do another review then. read more

Cozy cabin like restaurant on your way up to Haleakala. As we walked in, we noticed there was a sign that says no cell phone use, but it had the WiFi password next to it. We were all confused. We were seated and our waitress came for our drink orders. After that, I went on my phone to send an email and she came back with our drinks. From then on, I got the vibes of dislike that I went on my phone. She set my drink down a little harshly and just had this distinct look on her face.. As for the food, they were all really really pricey! I just settled for the mango bbq ribs since it would have been just as much as a soup and salad.. Strong mango flavor, it was tasty but meh, not the greatest for the price paid. Margarita pizza was prepared outside which was neat! The ambiance reminds of staying in a cabin in the snowy mountains. There was a fireplace indoors and a cool table set up outside. Nobody was seated outside during my visit. It was very cold! Waitress had no problem splitting the tab individually but mentioned there will be an automatic 20% gratuity added for groups of 6 and over. No problem, but what if we wanted to tip more? The atmosphere was lovely for dinner, with live Hawaiian music and a fireplace adding to the amazing sunset views. Best breakfast with wonderful view of Haleakala. We went to watch the early sunrise at Haleakala and visited this place on our way back. We read many reviews on Yelp and thought of giving it a try and glad we did!! Staff is super friendly, they gave us what I think is the best stop in the cafe although they are many good spots (it's also good for bigger groups). Don't rush the staff, if you have time walk around their beautiful garden in the back and also their mini art gallery. We came here on our way back from a sunrise tour we did on top of Haleakala Mountain. The tour guide ordered ahead but when we got there we still waited about 20 minutes until our food was ready. I think this is because they are handling other tour groups coming down as well. The food was just okay. I had the waffle plate with strawberries on top. The waffle was a bit dry. The pancakes featured all the main Hawaiian food groups (e.g., macadamia nuts, coconut syrup, and sugar) ... the omelette with avocado and crab was filling and tasty ... and the coffee strong and plentiful. Drove an hour and a half up Haleakala mountain to get to the Kula Lodge for lunch. The goal was their BBQ ribs for one of our friends. He had the mango ribs and they did not disappoint. The rest of us tried other dishes: the butternut squash gnocchi, a wagu burger, crab cakes. All were delicious! And our waitress, Meghan was friendly and very helpful, and never let the mango ice tea glasses get empty. She was great...and so was the tea. read more

We made reservations for 5 p.m. and I requested seating as close to the windows as possible to watch the sun set. We were taking a friend out to dinner and the staff came through wonderfully! We had an excellent table right at the windows and watched a beautiful sunset of orange, fuschia and purple over the central Maui plain! Spectacular! I ordered the prime rib pasta, my significant other has the filet mignon, and our friend had the fresh mahimahi Asian style. We started with the coconut shrimp appetizer, which we shared. The bread was yummy. We ended our meal with coffee mud pie for our friend and a strawberry shortcake to share between me and my significant other. Too few fresh strawberries and too much whipped cream for my taste, but tasty just the same. I had the Makawao coffee which is hot coffee with hot chocolate, brandy, and Grand Marnier! Yum! I had seen the pictures of the Kula Lounge and I had to come. Good thing the guy I was with let me have my way. We had missed coming for breakfast so I was bummed so we decided to try their lunch. I was surprised to find the lunch menu food so good. We ordered a pizza which is cooked in the oven outside. I'm not even a fan of pizza and I regretted sharing, I could've eaten the whole pizza myself. But the worst part of the meal was having to share the most delicious upside-down pineapple cake. Who has dessert after lunch? Me of course. My intention was to eat the pineapple cake later, so I got a to-go box, however, it never left the restaurant... Kula lounge can really only be described as peaceful and beautiful. I couldn't get over how quiet it was outside. You could hear all of the nature around you. The scenery was breathtaking. The mountain and ocean views could put anyone in a good mood. People that love meditation or peace and quiet would enjoy this place. The only thing this place needs is a little bit better service. Woke up at 2am to drive to Haleakala in order to see the amazing sunrise. By 8am or so, we were ready to drive back to the city. Starving for some warm food, we went to Kula Lodge to eat some breakfast (although to us, it was more like lunch since we've been up for so long already). Ordered the omelet and loco moco. Unfortunately, the pictures look more appetizing than it really was. The dishes lacked depth and flavor. Everything was very bland and subpar. While we were dining there, we saw buses and buses of tour groups stopping in to enjoy some food. I think this just be why they are so busy all of the time, because of the tour buses. Some type of agreement with the tour companies perhaps? Not sure. But I definitely won't be back. read more

Yes, yes, yes!! A must when we go to Maui. I DREAM of these pancakes and their BFF coconut syrup. The buttermilk pancake order is 3 huge pancakes. Always get the macadamia nuts! We also ordered the ham, mushroom, cheese omelet and potatoes. Omelet is delicious, but oh those home potatoes...little chunks of almost fried potatoes with a hint of rosemary. Mmmmm. Oh wait, the view! Not only is the food freaking delicious, the view! We got there about 10:15 so the Haleakala sunrise crowd had already gone, and so there we were seated in the far corner window table, almost perched over the beautiful gardens below. Overlooking Maui and sipping on a great cup of coffee Now mind you, this is Maui. So prices are a bit steep for breakfast. Our bill was a little over $40. Hubs had coffee ($4). I just had water. Only downfall we had, was the three waitresses sitting along the wall behind us eating their breakfast and having some very inappropriate conversations. We found ourselves not talking so we could hear what topic was next. They talked about dying their hair, how long it had been since she cut hers, how many tongue piercings she had, what it felt like to get this part of her ear pierced. So without the side entertainment, it would be a five star. Afterwards, strolled the gardens below and took some fabulous pictures. We will be back. read more

Went during the holidays for dinner. Everyone was very friendly and cheerful. The service was great but just very slow. And, for $42, my prime rib was the thinnest slice of prime rib I've ever seen served plated. The kiawe smoke flavor was good, but it was supposed to be served medium rare, and although it had a nice pink color on the outside, it was well done and dry/overcooked when I cut into it. The lamb was 4 tiny, thin slices of lamb that were cooked perfectly medium rare, but the flavor was not quite right on the mint chimichurri (not enough mint and sweetness and too much garlic). Overall, 3 stars for this holiday meal. The lodge always has lovely rustic country ambiance. Unfortunately, in the evening, you can't really enjoy the beautiful coastal views. The windows are tinted, so they are like mirrors, and you just see a reflection of yourself and the rest of the restaurant in the windows, lol. I've had better experiences here before, so I am hopeful that in the daytime during a less busy time (not during the holidays), the caliber of food and overall experience will improve. My macadamia nut crusted Mahi.Mahi failed in freshness, preparation and execution. (Even my server confirmed that it was not crusted in macadamia nuts.). The sales served with it was not up to par for a fine restaurant and the fish serving was meager compared to my meals at Mamas Fish House, Tommy Bahamas and The Plantation at Kapalua. The garden salad was 3/4 bitter arugula complimented with unfresh tomatoes and cucumber. My bill was not adjusted for the fact that I was served sup-par food. In addition, a surcharge was attached to the total bill that included tax, cost of meal and 28% tip. I wish the Kula Lodge well as new management learns to prepare and serve meals like we learned to expect over the decades we have loved to make the long drive to have an excellent location and meal. read more

We stopped by Kula Lodge after going to Haleakala and had a wonderful dinner. We were originally seated in the dining room and it has a wonderful atmosphere, however the weather was nice so we opted to sit outside. The outside seating is very unique and has wonderful views of their gardens and the island. We had an assortment of items including pizza cooked in their outdoor fire burning pizza oven. The food was fantastic. This was one of my favorite places we had a meal during our stay on Maui. I would love to stay at the lodge and try their breakfast next time. read more

There was no signal at the lodge or the area for me so sadly I couldn't check in here. After a long day driving up Haleakala, hiking a short trail (which lead to a lot of coughing) and spotting super cute Nene waddling around, dinner nearby was the best thing for us to hear. I'm glad we made a reservation the day before as the dining room filled up quickly after we sat down. The lady in the front was definitely was snappy about telling guests coming in that they were booked up. If you wanted a pizza from here, get the order in before 6pm as they make the pizza outside in a super awesome brick oven. That oven just looks amazing and you know you're getting a pretty awesome pizza that's cooked with actual flames. This place is gorgeous with a comfort home granny feel to it, plus the view just makes everything so much more amazing. Props to the pianist that was playing since I heard a bunch of Disney music as well as Snoopy :) As for the service, it does leave a lot to be desired. After being seated, the view of the setting sun was blocked from us with automatic curtains. It wasn't too big of a deal as we just went outside to the back patio to enjoy the view and the garden. The server disappeared on us after seating and taking our drinks. I don't think I saw my POG juice for a while until a bit before my food arrived. Since the server was at other tables and rushing pizza orders, we thought we'd wait a bit and two of us left to enjoy the garden while 4 others stayed at the table to chat. There certainly is a disconnect with the kitchen and wait staff. In the gardens, we just heard a bunch was pleas for a pizza order before 6pm and staff grumbling about it. Even in the dining rooms, food were taken in and out of the kitchen as they tried to figure out with what goes where. The kitchen staff in the dining room definitely were annoyed with the wait staff as you could totally hear it in their voices and mildly hard exchanges. When we did finally get our food after a long wait (bread came after entrees), it wasn't too worth it. First was the Maui Onion Soup: there was only a few sprinkles of cheese on top and a bit bland with a few strings on onion in it; the only flavor really was a bit of weird sweetness. As for the entrees, the two that left us a bit sad was the Macadamia Nut Pesto with Penne Pasta and the Mango BBQ Baby Back ribs. The pasta was so oily that we could see the oil pooling around the pasta and just coated our lips in a very unappetizing way with each bite. For the Baby Back ribs, the dish was definitely going for the empty space concept plus only 6 green beans; the ribs were also fairly dry, no sauce helping it out. Final Thoughts: I super love the giant brick pizza oven and would love to try one... but I'll hold an hour more if I ever spend another day going up Haleakala (totally wished the visitor center near Red Hill was opened). It was fairly $$ but at least the view outside in the gardens made it a decent night. As for my stomach, I stopped at McDonalds afterwards for a bite. read more

I also ordered the Maui Coffee which was fantastic. The service was quick and we were in and out in less than an hour. Such a quaint and classic restaurant in the beautiful Kula area! When you walk in, it's like you've time travelled back decades. The decorations, rock walls, wooden tables & chairs, the music, the whole aesthetic was wonderful. There was live music when we went, a friendly piano player, and he sounded great! It wasn't too busy during Sunday lunch hour, so we got to choose between inside or outside seating. We got a window seat with a scenic view! Outside, there's tables with umbrellas and a little waterfall. So you can enjoy the brisk Kula air and the sound of running water while you dine. The menu was simple, a fusion of local/Italian/American cuisines. Unfortunately there was a long wait for the food, about 40 minutes, but I made the most of the time by checking out their garden outside. There's a cute cobblestone walkway along the well kept and diverse garden. Our waitress, Donna, was very sweet and kind. She made sure to check on us after every course to see how the drinks/soup/entrées was. They were out of a few menu items but Donna gave us a heads up as soon as we started reading the menu. She circled back to refill my coffee and the manager refilled our waters. We ordered the Maui onion soup, macadamia nut pesto pasta and a couple burgers. My friend ordered the Maui Mimosa and enjoyed it, although it was smaller than expected. The pasta was al dente and the pesto sauce was well seasoned but it was runny so it didn't stick well to the pasta. It is unfortunate that I have to write a bad review about Kula Lodge Restaurant under new management by 5 Palms Restaurant. On NYE, we responded to a Kula Lodge Restaurant Facebook ad to welcome the New Year with a special dinner and performance. It offered a late night dinner by Chef Raul Bermudez and entertainment and dancing by Amy Hanaialii Gilliom, accompanied by Jeff Peterson. We love Amy & Jeff and since it was our 34th wedding anniversay, we decided to go. There were 3 tiers of tickets to buy and we bought the general seating tickets amounting to almost $320 for 2 people. It was a well worth splurge for our anniversay and for New Years Eve, so we thought. The evening started out great sharing wine and conversation with friends and of course, Amy & Jeff. They proceeded to seat everyone at their tables and when we were finally called and escorted to our table, we were seated in the back of the room, around the left corner in a nook that made us look out the window in the opposite direction of the entertainment. In fact, there was a wall to the right and behind us that completely blocked us from seeing the entertainment or any one else. Like, why even sell this table that is totally separate from the party? We asked the server if she could find us another table, one that we could at least see the entertainment and be with the rest of the people. After being gone for a few minutes, she returned saying that there was nothing available. I reminded her that we paid over $300 for our tickets and that our table was unacceptable. We began to feel quite offended with our table location. Were we the last one on the list and why was this table even part of the inventory? So I asked for the owner/manager. (I had spoken to her earlier, when we arrived, and explained that tonight was our wedding anniversary and that 34 years ago we had our wedding dinner party in this restaurant.) She apologized with an empty smile but offered no table like the rest of the guests had. I asked for a refund and she said "there are no refunds." By now, people were turning their heads and listening to our banter. The manager then offered another table to us that was on the other far side of the restaurant next to the bar and restaurant entrance. We would be able to see the entertainment from the side, but the entrance door way, dance floor by the fireplace, and several other tables in front of the stage would be between us. We would still be isolated from the rest of the guests. No deal! We paid $300+ for this kind of table away from the main event while everyone else has a good seat? We didnt want to be up front; we just wanted a decent table like everyone else. I asked for my money back again. "Im sorry, no refunds". Amys manager overheard what was going on and offered us his two seats next to the stage. The manager then said okay but we would have to pay for the upgrade! Oh, so they have a problem giving back our money, but no problem asking for more money? The evening that was supposed to be an anniversary celebration was now a big arguement. We were embarrassed, offended and felt unimportant. By now, all we wanted to do was leave. After standing our ground, they finally agreed to refund us. We were so happy to leave. All we wanted was to celebrate our anniversary on NYE with Mauis best entertainers. But our expectations was crushed by the management of Kula Lodge restaurant. We are local Hawaiians, kamaāina living Upcountry. This kind of action cannot stay in our backyard. As a result, we have told everyone we encountered to NOT patronize Kula Lodge Restaurant which has been one of our favorite places to dine for many years! Now we say, STAY AWAY! Dont support a new business that makes no effort to make you feel important and welcomed. Sure, theyll get a lot of tourists in their restaurant, but when the tourists are gone, only the kamaāina remain. Kula Lodge Restaurant is at the bottom of MY list! It was an Unhappy New Year celebration for our 34th Anniversary. Spent over $300 to enjoy Mauis best entertainers at this restaurant and we were seated in the back of the room, around the left corner in a nook that made us look out the window in the opposite direction of the entertainment. We stopped here on our morning bike ride down from Haleakala. It was the perfect stop for some breakfast and a view. By the time we got down the mountain it was about 8-9 and a good time to finally eat. Ordered the breakfast burrito and waffles. They forgot about my waffles for about most of breakfast- but we're kind enough to take it off our tab. Definitely a fun place to eat if you're in the area! read more
