First time trying Kura Kura and I had a great time. There plenty of parking in the lot, which is shared with various other restaurants and markets. There are both tables and sushi bar seating, all of which filled up by the time I left on a Friday night. I had the mixed sushi, which tasted fresh and delicious. I wasn't fond of the blue crab hand roll (was a bit like wet dog food if I'm being honest) but the rest of the sushi made up for it. I wish it came with miso soup or a salad as many other places offer. The beef teriyaki was a bit disappointing as it tasted and looked more like bulgogi. The sauce was quite sweet. Veggie tempura was good! I would come back for the sushi and to try some of their other rolls. read more

Absolute gem. I had the Red Dragon Roll; it was exquisite. Everything is very fresh and high quality. ROLANDO made me feel very welcome, and when I asked to add green onions it was no problem. , the service is excellent. Very clean and nicely lit restaurant. Arrived Friday evening at 7 pm and was able to be seated at the bar right away (not too busy). There is a QR code for the menu but it wasn't loading so we went in blind with the menu (no pictures). Our server was nice and constantly checked in on us. The California roll was solid as far as they go. The wasabi was not fresh and had a cool florescent green color to it and wasn't that potent. The red dragon roll was also solid and the tuna was fresh. The bento mix bowl with tempura and chicken teriyaki was overall good. The pot stickers included were passable (not very flavorful, more fried flavor). The house salad was, well, the house salad (don't think I need say more). Tempura was light and crispy (needed more sauce though). The chicken was cooked perfectly (nice and crispy, not too juicy) and had just the right amount of teriyaki sauce. The Alaska roll was heavy as it was doused in a sweet mayo sauce (a little more than I prefer) but overall solid. Considering the small location, it was very clean and pleasant. It's a little bright inside (I normally prefer a darker ambiance for sushi restaurants). Pricing was acceptable however they don't have any specials like some of the larger sushi locations. I'm sad to write this since I have had good experiences here before, but had such a bad experience here recently. I took my mom here for lunch to celebrate; it was her choice to go here and we were excited. We arrived around noon and walked in to sit inside. Since it was noon, the place was of course bustling with people, but it wasn't jam-packed, just a normal level of busy. The inside of the restaurant is small and there were still 3 empty tables. We waited at the check-in stand for 3 minutes before we were even greeted by the host and when we were, the host walked away and said he'd be back. We were happy to wait and decided to peruse the menu. We waited a few more minutes (still in the entry way) and the host was nowhere in sight. We had to ask one of the sushi chefs if the host was coming back and he got the host to come from the back. When the host came back, he sat us down and said he'd be back again soon. Well, that was the last we saw him. We were never brought water or menus. We waited 15 minutes at the table for.... nothing. We were only there for lunch and had to get back to work, so after 15 min, I went back to the sushi bar and asked if we could place our order soon. The sushi chef didn't know what to tell us. The host was MIA. We decided at that point to leave and grab lunch faster somewhere else. It was a waste of 25 minutes and literally nothing to show for it. The reason I write this is because this may have been an issue of under-staffing, but seemed more to be an issue of poor customer service. Every table that was seated had their orders of food and were not leaving immediately. There weren't piles of people waiting to be seated behind us, so even if they were short-staffed, that was not the pressing issue for a mild lunch rush. I really enjoyed Kuru Kuru. It's a fairly small place so I'm sure when it's really busy there's a bit of a wait. The waiter was very nice. Greeted us as soon as we came in and since it wasn't busy we just picked our seats and sat at the bar. We ordered a few different rolls and a salad. I liked the dressing but there was too much, more dressing than salad. I really loved the California roll and the NBC roll. Also really liked the Screen Actors roll as well. Great little sushi joint in Burbank! My hubby and I decided to try a new eatery in Burbank and picked out this one. I was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is small. But we were able to get a table right away. The staff was friendly. I appreciated hand sanitizer at the front door and on all the tables. They have a specials board and a small menu which included Bento boxes for dinner!!! This will bring me back got sure! So many Japan's places only serve these at lunch and I so appreciate a small variety of items for dinner! So thank you! I, obviously, ordered the chicken teriyaki and California roll bento. My hubby ordered albacore sushi roll and spicy tuna cut roll. Added garlic edamame and a large saki and we had a feast! So hubby wasn't too keen on the spicy tuna, but I actually enjoyed them. The garlic edamame wasn't very garlicky, but good. Chicken was flavorful. Cali rolls, perfect. Loved the gyozo! Miso was average, but extremely hot (temp)! Salad dressing could have been a little more, but again it all was so good! Plus a big scoop of rice! Man so much food and all for $45! Dang! I don't understand why people ask others, "Do you like sushi?" when trying to figure out a mutual meal. Of course, I love sushi! You love sushi! Your mom's best friend's uncle loves sushi! EVERYONE LOVES SUSHI! If someone exists who doesn't like sushi, whenever- wherever, then cut ties with them ASAP because they can NOT be trusted! Even though I had already eaten dinner; there was no way I could turn down a friend who remarked that he was starving and wanted sushi. This fella claimed he "knew a place" that would satisfy all sushi lovers and so off we went to Kuru Kuru Sushi. Like most sushi spots nowadays; Kuru Kuru is housed in a strip plaza/shopping center near the corner of Verdugo/Hollywood Way neighboring a Popeyes, CVS, Subway, and a Smart and Final to name a few of the plaza businesses. Kuru Kuru looks small from the exterior view... and it is also small or perhaps "quaint" from the inside. The place is not blessed in the square footage department. The first thing that hit me was the scent that brushed my nostrils. No, it wasn't delectable and appetizing. It was an AWFUL smell that was like a mixture of an old building, dirt, foul food, and overdoses of cleaning chemicals. It was so bad that I was done right then and there and wanted to high tail it out of there but my dining partner insisted on staying. Slightly less disappointing but still a let down was the absence of a welcome at Kuru Kuru. You know how chefs at the counter of sushi restaurants always welcome all patrons? Kuru Kuru was quiet as a field mouse. Okay, then. Great to be here. We sat at the counter and decided to order an app of Shisito Peppers ($7.95) to nibble on while waiting for the choices made by my dining partner of the K3 Special Roll (garlic salmon, spicy tuna, avocado, cucumber, shrimp tempura, salmon, and garlic chips on soy paper - $12.95) and the K4 Special Roll (Garlic chili. Spicy tuna, avocado, cucumber, fresh albacore, ponzu, garlic chili oil - $13.95). The peppers were quite delicious and addicting for simply being blistered and seasoned peppers. I could eat these all day. Sadly, the peppers were the highlight and the rolls were a distance last place. They say if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all. So I will start with a polite note. The chefs at Kuru Kuru busted out the rolls quickly and the presentation was quite elegant. Plus, the pieces were large and chunky like those chonky pet memes. That's all fine and dandy but then we get to the taste... Well, I won't say Kuru Kuru is bad because it certainly wasn't like the odor in the establishment but it was simply bland. There was really no flavor at all. You might as well have a head cold with a stuffy nose because you won't taste a thing. Kuru Kuru is basically gas station sushi or the Taco Bell of sushi (meaning, it is only good when desperate late at night or drunk). Maybe I'm just a sushi snob but this was simply not worth the cost at all. Presentation and speed was all the rolls had going for them. What more can I say? I simply don't recommend Kuru Kuru at all unless you are into places that smell HORRIBLE, are uninviting, and sushi that is blander than a piece of paper. The Shisito Peppers hit the spot, at least. Ambiance is very basic. We have eaten at Kuru Kuru off and on for a few decades. We haven't been since the facelift a few years ago. The food, service and vibe used to be fresher and more energetic. The star is solely for the sushi chef. He was great and the sushi was prepared well, as well as tasty. It's not his fault it was overpriced. The review is fore the service, which was really what spoiled the evening for my group. We were told there was only seating at the bar which was fine. But then we went ignored after we sat down, probably because we didn't order alcohol. We were barely given water once and the menus after about 20 minutes. The sushi chef had to remind the servers to take our order after parties seated after us had already ordered and some were getting their food. We ordered a few rolls to share and nigiri, but were never given plates or dishes for soy sauce. The three of us were expected to share the same wasabi and ginger which I've never experienced anywhere else. Another group of three seater at the bar were having similar issues with the service. Rather than order more, we just paid the bill and left to grab food elsewhere. I'm not sure if they cater local regulars more, but I was very disappointed. It wasn't even a busy night and there is limited seating with more than enough servers. We don't want VIP service, but at least give the basics for dining and don't ignore customers over bigger spending parties (at least that is what it felt like). We tipped our servers extra at the subsequent restaurant because they were awesome, so we aren't the type of people that are never happy with service. read more

Solid sushi in Burbank! I often come here by myself when I need a quick sushi fix. The sushi chefs (as well as the servers) are always a delight - friendly and very approachable! I often detest sitting at the bar, but all of the chefs are super chill and leave you alone for the most part, but are also attentive when you need them. Their sushi roll prices are very reasonable and their rolls are quite tasty. I would definitely recommend their specials of the day/specials in general. The hand rolls are quite a steal at under $6 a pop. I enjoy their spicy albacore and spicy scallop hand rolls, although you really can't go wrong. I've gotten most of the rolls -- majority of them are named after the various studios in the vicinity. The ABC and NBC rolls I have definitely gotten on more than one occasion. This review is an update from my previous "unkind" review... I recently decided to give this place another try after my unpleasant dining experience. I ordered takeout and the waitress was very nice over the phone. She was even nicer in person and made sure my order was correct before leaving. The sushi was fresh and well presented. This experience changed my mind. I will be back and I do recommend. Previous review: Low rating is strictly for the service, which was terrible. There was literally 1 other table in the restaurant and my server was more concerned about setting up (which should've been done before they opened) than waiting on my table of 1. I waited forever for everything from ordering to getting my food in proper order. I had to ask for the miso soup which comes with entree. He obviously forgot to bring it out and I got it with my entrée instead of before. When I asked him for something he would first finish placing napkins or whatever he was doing instead of tending to his only customers in the place. I would truly hate to see what kind of service I would receive during a busy lunch or dinner. read more

Everyone thinks I'm nuts for driving all the way from Camarillo, to Burbank for Kuru-Kuru! Been coming here for years, and John and his mom are always the sweetest, and so welcoming. When you find something you like -- you stick with it. My favorite is the K-4 Special, and the Michelina roll. The garlic edamame is also really good. I would eat here at least once a week if I could! The staff is friendly, the renovations are amazing, and the fish is top notch, especially the kurodai. If there is a special event like a birthday, or I want to take my partner out for dinner, this is always the first place I recommend. Every sushi chef they employ has a unique flair to their dishes that really make each meal feel personalized. I especially enjoy the chirashi because you get to see which add-ins each chef prefers. It's always delicious, and even comes with miso soup! One birthday I asked Han, a chef who is no longer there, to make me an omakase meal, and it was the most memorable and delicious birthday meal I've ever had. Seriously, I love this place. I even follow them on instagram, even though they don't really post. Once, when John, who I think is the owner, worked behind the bar, he played Nujabes over the sound system. So, the sushi I think was actually pretty good according to my eating companion and the gyoza was totally good. Unfortunately, I chose a cooked option for my main and that was... not. I hate to write a bad review, but honestly, if you're not doing the sushi, a warning is necessary. I got the beef teriyaki and knew it was a mistake when I opened the package. When I say it was jerky, I am very much not exaggerating. The beef was thin, dry, tough, and immensely overcooked. It was definitely made lonnnngggg before I ordered it and it was unfortunate at best, I 100% could not eat it and am not a picky person in any way. I also agree with many other reviews - skip the miso soup, the packaged stuff you can get at the grocery store is honestly the same thing. Bottom line - go for sushi only, skip the rest. read more
