Came here on Valentine's Day for lunch. The server is super nice and it made the best dining experience. We tried Odori Shrimp from the Valentine's Day chef special menu, nigiri combo, beef gyoza, teriyaki beef and Wagyu beef ramen. Everything is tasty. However, the ramen noodles are pretty soft and not very chewy and bouncy like most of the ramen noodles. The restaurant is charming. My family has been regular customers at Tokyoya for years. It's our favorite local Japanese restaurant. Most of the time we're extremely happy with the food whether ordering combos, nigiri or sashimi. The one complaint I have right now is that for some reason one of the sushi chefs has chosen to add raw onions to nigiri. Traditionally nigiri does not use raw white onions. The menu doesn't state raw white onions as an ingredient either for nigiri. My understanding is the use of raw onions is an American addition but definitely not one this diner appreciates. Scallions/green onions are expected. Big chunks of raw onion covers up the flavor of the fish. Personally I can't these onions due to dietary restrictions. Please Tokyoya remove the raw onion use from your nigiri offerings or at least make sure they are included as an ingredient on all your menus so they can be avoided. read more

We have been going here since they were at their old location, probably about 15 years at least. We have noticed the last few times that the service has gone downhill and tonight was a new low. I wasn't acknowledged when I walked in, until a couple came in behind me. I got as far as to say I had a pickup order and was never even asked my name until they tried to give me the wrong order. After sitting there for almost 40 minutes, they asked me what my order was. Tables that came in after me were served before me and finally I asked for my money back and left. I was a weekly customer with my sister for more than 2 years. I will be honest and say this place has great sushi and that is why we kept going. If you are looking for food reviews , only care about getting good sushi and do not care about customer service (unfriendly managers that never acknowledge your regular patronage), definitely go. I however like to frequent restaurants where customer service is noticeable especially if I spend my money there regularly. Over the 2 plus years, we watched numerous friendly waitresses come and go. They all hinted to undesirable working conditions. It is quite evident the unfriendly managers/owners run a tight ship and do not like it when the waitresses interact with the customers. I witnessed the short female in her usual black hat give mean looks and give orders to "get to work" through the english speaking person. One of the many waitresses( our favorite) that left would comp a small dessert from time to time. It was a nice gesture since she was acknowledging we were "regulars". Then one night she said oh so sorry I can't give you dessert because of ( and looked at the short lady) . The short lady does not like it when the waitresses try to make small talk. She wants them to get the orders, drop the food and not engage. She is clearly all about work and not customer service. Never did the short lady smile or say thank you( through her translator) for coming. She looks up and that is it. We met the male owner quite some time ago and he was actually nice, but we stopped seeing him on our regular nights. One other thing to note. There is a table by the door that always says reserved and rarely is taken. We always asked if we could have that table and they would say it was reserved even though the whole time we ate no party used it. You would think MAYBE for regular customers they would let us sit there. My sister and I finally stopped going to Tokyoya after we were so annoyed by the unfriendly people ( not the waitresses) and how they were rude to the staff.We waited a solid 3+ months before returning . We had a craving for certain rolls and thought let's just see how they are and who is left of the waitresses. We walked in, short lady looked up without a hello or a smile (as usual) .The one waitress that managed to stick around this long actually smiled and said, where have you been! I told her we have been going to another place (Kuru Kuru) regularly where they are friendly, ask how we are, remember items we regularly order, etc. She laughed and said, oh ok. That basically sealed the deal for us for where we will continue to go ( and not go). It's a shame the owners and sushi chefs do not appreciate their regular customers. As someone looking for reviews, if you don't care about customer service and just want a good meal, you will get that here. You probably won't notice any of what we noticed if you are a passerby, rarely will go, or customer service is not important to you. Hope this helps in you search for good places! read more

Came in on a whim the other week as I was in the area and was thoroughly impressed with the food, so I came back again this week with a friend. Everything was just as good as I remember and we got a few more items as well. Strangely when we got our bill, noticed that there was a hefty service charge before a tip request, even though there were only 2 of us dining. Didn't recall having this on my bill the initial time I dined alone, so we asked a staff member about it. She told us it was definitely not supposed to be there and promptly got our server. Our server said something about getting confused with another party (which was odd because there really wasn't too many people in the restaurant, and we were clearly not with the table she pointed at behind us who were long gone.) She didn't seem very sorry about it, nor did she try to rectify the situation. Definitely left the restaurant on a sour note. Reading some of the reviews on here, sounds like we weren't the only ones with a bad experience with a lady server... The place is quite small (about 8 tables or so) and parking can be a little tricky in the relatively small shared lot. Not sure if I'd come back again due to the service. Honestly I've been here before, but this time was probably my worst experience ever. We did come in a little close to closing time, but we didn't realize they were about to close. The waiter told us we could still order, then proceeded to rush us and basically tell us what to get. She later brought the bill early, which I understand since they were closing. I'm not someone who refuses to tip I tip when I feel the service deserves it. I signed the receipt without leaving one because the experience wasn't good, and then she asked me twice if I was done filling it out, which made things uncomfortable, so I ended up leaving $10 anyway. Another reason the experience wasn't enjoyable was because she kept mentioning how long the kitchen food would take, which honestly made me not even want to order anything anymore. When the food finally came out, it wasn't even made the way we asked since we specifically requested soy paper, although they did fix it after we said something. At that point my appetite was completely gone. I literally did not even eat one piece of food and just paid for myself and my friends. In response to your explanation, it's confusing and doesn't address the unprofessional and extremely rude behavior of the older woman I mentioned in my first review. This woman was practically snarling at all of her co-workers and customers the entire time we were there. She looked angry and was clearly miserable to be there. Our server was young and extremely personable and professional. She tried hard to make our dining experience nice but the obvious disdain the older lady had for everyone still ruined it. Chose this place because of the reviews, unfortunately, it was just decent. Nothing to really brag about! Food: Hot Night Roll, spicy chicken combination, and baked salmon rolls. The hot night roll, and the spicy chicken combo was 7/10. I did not like how it was only 2 California rolls that came with it or no option for brown rice. However, the baked salmon rolls were not delicious! We took them back and just ordered the salmon nigiri that was just ok as well. Drinks: hot sake and strawberry soju that was good because you cannot go wrong! Service: The service was not that great! Our server was not attentive to us and she forgot to bring our water, and forgot the baked salmon roll. We literally waited for 20 mins and had to tell her, which she pretended she already knew and it was being made which was false. Ambiance: It was very small inside with not a lot of seating and not really modern to me. They had a tv so that made the experience decent. It wasn't crowded so the vibe was chill, so I was cool with that. Overall, I do not think I will come again! But nothing is wrong with trying. It is parking in the lot and easy parking. Really good sushi! Ordered a sushi mori combo, hand roll, and tamago nigiri. Everything was fresh and delicious. I thought it was a nice touch that the chef's selection nigiri had a little dollop of different toppings (like minced chilis or chili crisp) on each piece. I was really looking forward to trying this place with my family but I left pretty disappointed. The service was mediocre, they only started helping a bit more when they saw we ordered so many items and kept ordering. The ambiance was better inside than it looks on the outside but it's a pretty small place. The rolls were pretty small / unfulfilling for the prices that they charge. You probably can't tell from the pics that I took but I'm comparing to local places that I've personally been to. The original ones that I ordered which were omg, toro dragon, rainbow, spicy tuna, Philadelphia and popcorn lobster I would say were underwhelming. Then we added Yosemite, ex girlfriend and champion rolls...these three I'd recommend which is why I gave them the 3 stars. Now I changed it to 2 stars when I realized they charged us $5 for one can of soda, seriously? Overall, there are a lot better sushi restaurants in the nearby area that I'd prefer to go to. Our bill was over $200 without any alcohol. We also kept getting asked if we were done. Whether they needed our plates or the two tables we were at, it wasn't the best of service. i ordered on uber eats a random spot. i didn't realize they were close to closing when i ordered. i talked to the lady on the phone i asked for eel sauce on the side she was very nice. i got the food and wow i ordered the nigiri combo it was such an array of different sushi. and the chef put a lot of care into making it. it came with miso soup and this little shrimp and salad with this sauce. the shrimp was cold and refreshing the sauce for it was so good. the baked green mussels were so yummy. i'm so happy and glad i picked a random spot. now i need to go in person next time. thanks read more

I have never dined here before but have passed by it at least a hundred times. Today while running some errands I somehow ended up here with my husband to have lunch. What a cute place.... We walked in and were greeted right away and seated right away. The hostess also our waitress was friendly and attentive. We ordered a few rolls and really enjoyed our lunch. I've been coming to this place for years--well over 10 visits--and today was the last straw. I ordered the chicken udon, and what I received was basically a vegetarian udon. I honestly thought they forgot the chicken completely. When I asked the waitress, she told me I could "add extra chicken for an additional charge." What a joke. After digging through the bowl, I finally found about five tiny pieces of chicken, each the size of a peanut. I pointed it out, she spoke to the chef, and then they both laughed about it. Completely unprofessional. After so many times giving this place my business, this is the last time. I walked out extremely disappointed. She tells me they still have to make another one--at this point I don't trust my order is right so I ask her to double check and as suspected it's wrong. They take my stuff and put it on a plate for someone and make my stuff. By the time I got it all home, it wasn't great . Their burrito, which we love and got two orders of, Is half the size when it's take out. I don't mind paying more for take out but to less food and the awful wait was a really bad experience. My favorite is the fried squid legs. It was right amount of crunchiness outside but still not overflowed at all inside. The sashimi, which is the most expensive part of our dinner, on the other hand is a 50/50. Some of them are pretty good while some of them are not that fresh anymore. Got a Salmon Combo with tempura, the Tonkatsu & Curry, the Dragon Roll, and the OMG Roll. Their prices were similar to other Japanese restaurants I've been to in Burbank. My party and I enjoyed all the dishes and even had some leftover. I enjoyed the Tonkatsu & Curry the most; curry had some heat and was hearty with meat, potatoes, and veggies, and there were 2 full pieces of crispy tonkatsu on the side. Tokyoya was the first stop and in hindsight, I wish I had eaten more here rather than save space for the subsequent spots. The sushi here is fresh, the portion sizes are good, the rolls are creative, and the service is very nice. I enjoyed the addition of yuzu kosho to the seared scallop hand roll. That was nice refreshing twist. The hopelee roll came with generous portions of scallop on top. We were a little disappointed there wasn't enough jalapeño for each piece but that was minor. The nigiri showed that even without seasoning, the fish was really fresh. We also didn't notice they had $5 pints of Kirin until we were ready to leave. Oops. Once a favorite, and they were a go-to many times during covid, but they have really dropped off in the past year. Even though the quality dropped way off, we keep trying every 6-8 weeks in the hope they improve. Sadly, it hasn't happened, and I think last night was our final visit. Service was and always has been great. The atmosphere is always good. Prices have really shot up, which is understandable, but the quality of the fush simply doesn't match. Our unagi was almost like jerkey this time, and with the exception of albacore belly, our nigiri was pretty bland. We never order from their cuisine menu, and that's probably fine, but for sushi, especially considering the prices, I feel you can do better. read more
