I wanted a change from our regular sushi spot and found Sushi Dake on Yelp. It's located in a small little plaza that is so easy to miss if you don't look for it. Parking was super easy. When you walk in, you're greeted by everyone. The restaurant is a really cute, cozy style restaurant. The servers were very kind and attentive. We ordered our appetizers and then our dinner. I don't recall everything we ordered (see photos for more). Everything went really well except for the hand rolls. We ordered hand rolls and they gave us cut rolls, which is no biggy. They were extremely apologetic and asked to remake it. We didn't want to be a burden so we just took it as is. We ordered way too much food and had left overs the next day. Really unassuming little spot, but every time I go I am consistently impressed with how fresh the fish tastes, how perfect the sushi rice is, the presentation of the sushi, and just the overall quality and execution of everything. We frequented Sushi Dake for years, and could always count on it to deliver. While they were never cheap, the extra expense was worth it in our opinion, based on the quality of the fish, the rolls and the nigiri. When we wanted something superior for the additional $, it was a reliable go-to. Picked up there often during Covid, and was always happy. Placed an order for pickup this past weekend. It had been a year or more since we've been there, and we ordered our usual likes. The total came in quite a bit higher than we were used to, but it was OK, because it was, after all Dake, and everything's getting more expensive. Picked it up right at the appointed time, and got it home quickly. It was. a let down, on every level. The rice in the nigiri was a cold, gummy clump, like it had just been pulled out of a refrigerator. The tuna that topped it was dry, tough and smelled and tasted "off". Two other orders of various nigiri were a waste of money, based on the rice issue. The rolls were no better - just mushy, pretty tasteless, overall what you'd maybe expect at an all-you-can-eat sushi place, not close to even Kabuki-level. And with a pretty hefty price tag (dinner for two came in at $130.00 with no alcohol) I felt taken advantage of. There's no justification for that kind of money for sushi of this quality. If you can't even care enough to get the rice right, why are you selling sushi? It was nice having a local quality sushi spot. Based on this experience, Sushi Dake is no longer that place. It's an unexpected gem. Considering the neighborhood- and the affordable price, it really can't get much better than this. The food is good (the rolls, the teriyaki dinners, the tempuras- all of it). I see a lot of regulars come in, enjoy a nice, easy dinner and a drink - hang out and leave. I can tell there's history there. I've always enjoyed Sushi Dake. Our favorites are Dodger hall and the burrito. Their hours are a bit sporadic and after Covid the dodger ball is half the size. I'm thinking with all the good costs going up it has really impacted this place. The burrito was big enough to counter the size of the ball so we left pretty happy. The service is always great. Oh Sushi Dake, I have missed you! I hadn't been to Sushi Dake since pre-COVID quarantine, but after a number of unsatisfying sushi deliveries in my area, I finally decided enough was enough and to get take out since I was in the area. I was told that it would be 30 minutes; when I got there I still had over 10-15 minutes until I was to pick up so I parked right in front and sat in my car. A lady who worked there came out after a few minutes and after getting my name, she told me my order was ready. It was so quick! Went inside to pay and collect my food. Everyone working inside was wearing masks, there were glass partitions at the front where the register was, and they also had hand sanitizer available. Got a spicy tuna roll with avocado, the Dragon Roll and the Sexy Roll. All 3 were so delicious and oh-so-satisfying (forget you, sushi delivery by me!). The food is always good the times I've been there. Last night I saw something I wish I hadn't. As I was eating, I looked up and noticed one of the chef's cleaning his nose with a napkin sticking his fingers in his nose (again with a napkin but still) so I was waiting for him to go wash his hands. This unassuming restaurant in a small Burbank strip mall is home to our absolute favorite local sushi, where talented chefs and thoughtful staff serve fresh, delicious fish in all of your favorite varieties. Wow! Great! we stumbled on this find yesterday while shopping in Burbank. First off location nondescript in shopping mall right next to a massage parlor. Can't be that bad, right? Service for us was just fine tonight. My daughter ordered the eel and avocado roll and loved it so much she ordered a second. Pre-pandemic I'd be here almost once a week. Their sushi is fresh every time and we enjoy trying out new rolls! Crunch roll, Hawaiian roll, dynamite roll are some of our favorite fancy rolls but getting just normal sashimi is also delicious. Love the salmon, yellowtail and tuna. And since we came in during Covid-times just an update on their safety precautions... we sat inside (the only ones) and the entire staff was wearing a mask the entire time. I love this place because it's convenient to home, I don't have to drive to downtown Burbank to my other favorite Japanese restaurant. Ample parking. The place is only small so it gets packed fast. The staff is Korean - and there's nothing wrong with that. They are friendly, fast, and serves fresh sushi. One less star for the price. I think $12 per roll is a little high - but this is just me.
