Jean-Luc, one of the owners, is extremely knowledgeable, and the kitchen is sensitive and accommodating to those with food allergies. The French-Algerian food that they serve is, in a word, delicious. My fiance and I got engaged at La Baraka at the beginning of November, after dining there on a few previous anniversaries. Found out about this place via the Queens Restaurant Week ad in our local community newspaper. It was well worth the trip from Richmond Hill to Little Neck! Ambiance was elegant and calming. Tables were set "just so" and chinaware was a beautiful pattern that caught my eye -- added to the overall elegance of the restaurant. Small place, family-owned (for 34 years) and operated. Could tell up front that they care about their clientele and the food they serve -- and the 3 of us NOT disappointed. Went for dinner on a Wednesday night and the place was full! Luckily, we had made a reservation. Plenty to choose from via the menu plus "chef specials". We had THE BEST onion soup, delicious mussels and "melt in your mouth" goose liver pate for appetizers. The rolls were so hot, we initially couldn't handle them. The entrees were excellent! Fork-tender boeuf bourguignon, a Moroccan special (that I can neither spell nor pronouce) that came with great couscous and the Cassoulet (something I've seen in recipe books, but have put off by how much is involved to make it; a complex stew with several meats -- including duck, which I love -- white beans and carrots). For dessert, we had chocolate mousse, the cheesecake and their chocolate truffle cake with 3 layers of decadent chocolate. Excellent ending to a exceptional meal! The food tasted like bad wedding food. The lack of flavor, and almost diner-like food swimming in grease can be taken out at any local dump in a corner...Only here, you can pay $80 for 2 very uninviting entrees...The rice with the trout tasted old, the trout itself was the worst we've ever had and the seafood was over-cooked and drowning in grease. The ingredients were definitely not fresh. Often times, when you're hungry, food tends to taste better. We were hungry. The food there was horrible. French? There's nothing French about it. A touch of North West African? Are you kidding? North, South, West, East. Doesn't matter. Nothing African about it either. THE SERVICE: The waitress there seemed like she was in a bad mood. When she took our plates, she took them like she was angry about something. She took my plate of salad before I could finish it. WTH...The waiter dropped a basket of bread on our table right around the time when our miserable entrees arrived. What a show... There was a lady there who seemed like the owner or related to the owner and she was polite. But I can get polite at any retail establishment. It is French Bistro sans a French waitstaff! Ambiance is cool, oldish, unlike a lot of places in Queens or NYC. The food was good: I ordered a lamb kabob dish and my wife ordered a snapper. The cut of lamb was a good one and the snapper was a good proportion. They were both cooked properly and well seasoned. There is no "steak frites" on the menu. One of the best French restaurants in the neighborhood. Sure it's not the classy French full course meal you'll have. It's Morracon style and that's exactly why this place totally rocks. You'll be greeted by friendly French owners. And right away you can tell you stepped into an authentic place. The decor and overall ambiance is warm, cozy, and intimate. The space is small but they have plenty to offer. I've only been here for Valentines Dinner (my brother and many other people I know ADORE this place) So I finally tried it out. Valentines menu was more expensive than their usual Twilight Menu (pre-fix course). But the quality was on par regardless of all the bookings for V-day. And that says something about an establishment! I've heard their usual Twilight Menu is also very worth it! So I'll definitely be back! I've already recommended this place to plenty of my friends! For the time I went, my friend and I got the escargot and pate as appetizers. The escargot came in shell and was nicely garnished in butter and garlic. The pate was a huge size with sides of pickles! We had to take it home! The baguette on the side was a good companion to these two appetizers. We also got a house salad which was also decent, but nothing special. For the entrees we got the rack of lamb and duck confit. Whenever I dine French, duck confit is always on the menu, no matter if I get it or my partner gets it. Anyway, this duck confit was spectacular! Garnished with Orange sauce it gave a tangy taste and the skin itself was crispy with a thin layer of fat that melts in your mouth. It was way better than a couple of other French places I've tried in the city. The rack of lamb was very tender and the meat seemed well aged. The seasoning was also scrumptious. Both plates exceeded my expectations and the portions are HUGE. It will definitely feed someone REALLY hungry, unlike traditional French plates. For dessert, they let you choose coffee or tea and the service is truly phenomenal - never was my cup empty. Downside though? Tea is served as tea bags, not brewed tea, but part of a pre-fixe course I guess it's expected. Dessert was a choice of pastry. We chose the cheesecake and the caramel pudding or panna cotta (i forgot). Both was decent, but nothing worth mentioning because it wasn't ALL that. However, the prices, portions, and quality of the food, and service is well worth it. Definitely a must-try if you're a French cuisine lover like me and always looking for a good place to try in the neighborhood instead of venturing off to the city! I recently went to have dinner here with a friend. I always wanted to stop in but never did. But this weekend, we decided we wanted some french food. We walked into a very cozy restaurant that was beautifully decorated with lovely framed pictures. The server Valerie greeted us with the warmest welcome as she showed us to our table. When we asked for her suggestions she steered us in the right area. It was hard to decide but we settled on cauliflower soup, coquille st. Jacques, house salads with homemade blue cheese and russian dressing, rib eye steak and duck l'orange with peach, raspberry, and orange sauce. For drinks, Valerie suggested a great bottle of red wine that was a blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot called Arrogant Frog. It was delicious! So happy she recommende it! While we ate, we were enjoying the meal, the decor, and watching all the other diners. We found out later that Valerie was the daughter and her and her parents owned and operated La Baraka together. We started going to La Baraka a few years ago and it is our favorite restaurant...in fact, it has become addictive! The food is absolutely delicious and the twilight menu price cannot be beat. You feel at home from the minute you walk in as you are greeted by the most hospitable owners. I cannot say enough wonderful things about La Baraka...the food is delicious, the price is right and it is such a cozy atmosphere. Maybe in the future they will consider adding some gluten free meals to the menu or provide gluten free bread sticks. Went to dinner with my husband and we were nauseated with the most disgusting food we have ever had. As always we were grabbing dinner for the evening. As we entered, the place was dead and lacked a feeling of welcomeness. Given the reviews we wanted to try it out regardless, especially their goose liver pate. We found two pieces of hair while eating it. We did not want to make a fuss about it so we let it be and just discontinued eating hoping main courses may blow our mind away. My husband had ordered the Lamb Kebabs and boy oh boy, chewy, tough and flavorless pieces of meat, somehow were just thrown into the plate. I ordered the Sole for myself and let me tell you, it smelled so fishy that after two bites my stomach turned and I wanted to vomit. I am a seafood lover and I have had Sole plenty of times in my life before but never ever has it tasted so bad. One after the other, things just got worse. We asked for the check and asked to speak to the lady who seemed to be in charge. We notified her of our horrific experience and this is the best part, she replied "well madame, I'm sorry you feel this way" and went on boasting about other clients. Absolutely shocked! This has to be our worst restaurant experience ever. Do not go to this place. Plenty of great restaurants around with great food and accommodating service. This restaurant is a joke. read more

La Baraka was one of my first experiences with French food, and short of being in France itself, it certainly left a great first impression of the cuisine on my psyche. The ambience is very cozy and small, someplace between a tiny French cafe, romantic date night, and your grandmother's kitchen when the family is over. The wall is adorned with classic Art Nouveau poster art which gives an old school charm to the overall feel. The staff is very friendly and personable, and is very attentive and helpful. I tried the escargot, which was quite savory and I enjoyed the Pates cheveaux d'ange- angel hair pasta with shrimp, clams, and mussels in a white wine sauce. Granted, somewhat of a nod to my own Italian sensibilities, the approach was markedly not Italian, which in this case was a good thing. The white wine sauce was very light, almost verging on a glaze that ensconced the pasta gingerly and slinked around the seafood, which was fresh. Not entirely sure what seasonings were used, but the French take on what would be seemingly Italian made for a remarkably savory dish, that brought out the sweetness in the seafood. For dessert the profiteroles were a delight and went down smooth with a cup of decaf coffee. While I found it to be a great family experience, I would not hesitate to make a date night out of La Baraka- it's warm, intimate atmosphere; very decent prices, and most importantly the excellent food would be a perfect place to escape to with your significant other. I intend to return to La Baraka and soon, regardless of whether or not I snag a date! read more

I went with my partner for our anniversary dinner on a Saturday at 5 pm. The service was extremely friendly and attentive. The food was very memorable, save for some slightly stale bread (though on the plus the tolls had been heated). My suggestions: add some textural contrast to the soups - the carrot was fresh and creamy sand butter (much appreciated!) but the purée texture can get boring after a few bites. The grilled steak was perfectly cooked it do come with a pepper sauce on the side, but I think a marinade or spice run prior to grilling would have made it go to the next level. (Chimmichurri or a pepper rub perhaps?) I would recommend not coming at 5 as we did unless you want to eat next to babies and the elderly. (This was our mistake by trying to avoid crowds. Though despite being early, who brings s baby to a French restaurant?) The vegetables are perfectly cooked, but we noticed they served the same carrots and broccoli for every dish. Why not mix up the vegetables to ones that are seasonal so that it doesn't become boring? The decor was kitschy and cute, but I would highly suggest to the owner to get rid of the fading and outdated carpet, and to redo the bathroom- the wallpaper is peeling. Overall, top notch service but would be 5 stars with a few tweaks. read more

I had the soup sampler which had small pots of potato leek,lentil and onion soup and all were yummy. My husband had the spinach quiche which was delicious. We both had the mixed grill shish kebob which was chicken,filet mignon and a baby lamb chop and sausage and was delicious. This is one of the last old school classic French restaurants left in New York. Amazing Onion soup gratinee, Coquilles St Jacques, Duck with rasberry reduction. The owner is a lovely lady who keeps a sharp eye on the dining room. Service is usually outstanding. Today, not so much as the waitress seemed annoyed at me and my Mom for sharing. She said "you know there's a sharing charge". I said that's ok. How much is it? I asked as she was in a huff and walked off without telling us. She also never told us about the specials. One of the waiters came over and asked us if we wanted a drink or wine and my Mom ordered a glass of wine ( I drive and can not drink). The Waitress returns after our Coquilles St Jacques was served and says "Oh you're not drinking anything either?", than notices my Moms wine glass and says oh sorry. Then we hear her reciting a list of specials at another table. It would have been nice to know but too late. I'm sure she's not even aware if how rude that all came off. My Mom is elderly and cant eat very much. We also like sampling a couple of courses. Anyway, dessert was a delectable mixed berry fruit tart - on a milles-feuilles pastry with whipped cream. As it turned out when the bill came the owner took off the share charge. She is what makes this place a true gem. But alas, this time only 4 stars and not 5. Dinner would have been more pleasant without the attitude. The waiters however merited a 25% tip. We would usually leave more because we share entrees.
