Well the food is great! But the service is poor. I was there on Sunday morning and I ordered a costilla, it was cold. This restaurant really disappointed me. I let my server know that it was cold but all they said was I can reheat it and take it to go. I didn't like that response as a server they need to satisfy their costumer and clearly the service was not met. I hope there is better costumer service and treat their costumers how it should be, Not only because we tip but because as a costumer we expect great service from this restaurant. read more

This has been the go to spot for Birria for years. I have been coming here since 2013 and it just hits everytime. They are consistent and the prices are reasonable even with inflation. I went today and paid $22 and some change for an order. I love the handmade tortillas. Parking is small but there is another plaza next door with plenty of parking! Plus, it's quick to get your food. This is a little hole in the wall in East San Jose. I've passed it a million times, and today I made it in. I ordered the Enchiladas California de Pollo. ( I don't do goat!). The sauce has a nice little kick and the beans were awesome! Good Mexican rice is hard to find, but their's was good. Definitely B+. So...just paid the bill....not sure how that plate & 2 beers cost $34! Listed price was $13 for plate & $6 per beer = $25 Since the place only had 2 other customers I felt bad complaining. The food was bland and lacked flavor. The quesa birria tacos did not have enough meat for these ridiculous prices. Honestly, I would have been better of just ordering a quesadilla. The price for just one mediocre and bland quesa birria taco is crazy. The consome is so watered down. At this point just give me a water bottle with food coloring. The agua frescas are true their name straight up water with a hint of flavor. Even Starbucks has more flavor. If there was an option to give ZERO stars that's what they should get.  The carnitas were burnt to crisp, I know I did not order charcoal with a side of greasy tortilla. The lemon (or the one drop of lemon that came out of the dry lemon) did not help at all!  This is a dishonor to Mexican food. We ordered 2 birria platters to go and they came with NO CONSOMMÉ or tortillas like they were supposed to. I live in Oakland, so returning back to the restaurant wasn't an option at the time. Ruined our picnic so we called the restaurant and spoke with the lady and she apologized and was extremely friendly and she said that they would give a replacement birria platter next time we came in. We did come back two weeks later next time we were in San Jose and the owner refused to honor the offer and instead only gave a refund of a few measly dollars to cover for the consommé that was missing. Super rude and didn't offer to call the employee that made the offer or anything. read more

I'm not sure why everyone says the consome is bland here or that it needs more flavor. I thought it was perfect once adding some lemon, onions, and cilantro. Today, I ordered two quesabirrias. I had one goat and one beef. It was pretty good. I think they could have put more cheese and cooked it on the grill a tad longer to give it more of a crunchy texture. Having gone to Mexico about 15 times in the last few years, I will say that the food has an authentic flavor. I love that they show case the flavor of their meat and they didn't season it too much. One suggestion is that they should provide mexican lemons. They currently provide the yellow ones. If you want to have solid birria, I would recommend this place. For takeout. Their tacos were meat + flour tortillas with cilantro and onions on the side. Overall, a sad looking, bland and dry taco. -Birria Taco with Consome on the Side: 2/10. Consome (soup) was bland like the taco. -Lamb Rib Tacos: 1/10. Very dry. -Soft Tacos Carne Asada: 1/10 -Quesadilla: 1/10. For $8, this was so sad. This is the place where my family has been coming to eat birria for years. I brought my boyfriend to try the birria. He asked for a beef birria and they brought out a plate of goat Birria and broth. The waiter didn't mentioned anything. After waiting for an hour the waiter finally brought our food. When my boyfriend mentioned it did not taste like beef at first I was skeptical but then I tried it and realized it wasn't beef but goat after questioning the waiter she said they mix the birria and chivo. How disgusting is it for them to know that someone is asking for goat and knowingly and willingly brought goat instead. They don't even know if he is allergic to goat. When I politely questioned them I was blamed however the waiter never said anything when we order. It seems like they assumed we wouldn't notice. How sad. I do like goat and I did pay for my food but now regret it because of how they assumed we wouldn't notice. If my boyfriend was allergic they would've had a big problem. The service is great. But they aren't consistent with keeping their food fresh. One time i went they gave me spoiled horchata. I bought a burrito today and it smells like dirty towels and the horchata smells like the powdered horchata, the limes are super dry. They use left over food which goes bad but they still sell it to their customers. read more

Stumbled in here with a terrible hangover thanks to the New Year celebration and I'm glad they were open on New Year's day! It is a hole in the wall restaurant. Don't be scurred...(does anybody still say that?) Ordered a bowl of birria and a michelada. I believe their tortillas are handmade on the spot. Best hangover food ever. I quickly felt better! They are an authentic Mexican restaurant, from the food to the decor, down to their jukebox. Plenty of parking! read more

Great and authentic quality plus amazing customer service. I tried the Taco de Borrego and the Quesabirria. Both were delicious and fulfilling. Size is solid too, I'd say 2 tacos are enough for the average person. Customer service was good as they constantly checked-in on us and kindly brought more onion/cilantro as we requested. I have heard so many great things about this place, i used to visit Birrieria Tepa on the opposite side many years ago but unfortunately they closed down. I walked in and everyone ignored us, I had to ask a waiter if we could get a table. We sat down and waited around 15 for someone to take our order then it took 45-50 minutes for us to receive our order! We had the menudo and it had no flavor whatsoever, we also ordered the tacos de birria and they were the only good part of the visit. Pricey and not the greatest service. Will not return! read more
