We've been going to the original La Contenta on the LES for years and were so excited to get a table at their Oeste location before we went to a concert at LPR. Super busy, lots of tables of couples and friend groups out for dinner. The night we were there it took a little time to get our second round of drinks and had to flag down our waiter but it was a busy night! Their margaritas are so freaking good. Boyfriend and I came here on a blustery night. We made reservations and were promptly seated. The vibe is casual and fun! A table of younger people next to us were celebrating a birthday and on the other side was a family with children. I ordered the shrimp enchilada on recommendation from the waiter and boyfriend ordered the Chile rellenos -- a classic that he had been searching for since our trip to Mexico. We ordered several rounds of drinks which were all fantastic! The guacamole was fine, nothing out of the ordinary but still good. My dish was wonderful seasoned, the shrimp cooked to perfection, and appropriately cheesy. I didn't feel heavy afterwards as I usually do after eating Hispanic food. We didn't get any appetizers, but we each chose a drink from the menu - there are lots of great choices! My friend and I both ordered the Chile Relleno, and we both agreed it was really good. My boyfriend got the Birria de Res, and he said it was really good, but it only came with two tacos, so he basically had to eat most of it like soup. First of all-super cool outdoor dining setup. Each table is enclosed within its own space and all necessary COVID and social distancing precautions are taken. The menu showcases interesting dishes ranging from traditional Mexican (ex. Enchiladas Suizas) to unique fusion (Pollo en Mole Poblano with Wild Rice Chicken Risotto). I ended up opting for the Pollo en Mole Poblano while my friends chose the Enchiladas de Camaron, Tacos de Pescado, and Mole Verde. Pollo en Mole Poblano - This dish was extremely tasty; the mole sauce was very flavorful with a rich consistency. The wild rice risotto was fabulous-smooth and creamy with hearty plantains mixed in. Unfortunately, my chicken was on the drier side and a bit difficult to chew. Overall, I enjoyed the experience and my friends each enjoyed their respective dishes. Everything starting from when I called the restaurant to when I ate my food was so seamless and amazing. I felt like being vegan today, since I'm still recovering from the bloat from the holidays. I called the restaurant to ask what options they had for vegans and what can be made vegan. The person who answered the phone was so sweet and helpful. He gave me options that weren't on the menu like making veggie tacos, and he also reassured me that the black beans are completely vegan. My husband and I wanted to split the nachos, but of course he wanted cheese on his. I put in a note in my order to put cheese on half, if possible. When I received the order they actually put our 1 order of nachos in 2 separate containers. One was vegan and the other vegetarian, it was so thoughtful! I ordered the mole verde as my entree, and this reminded me of a Spanish version of a Thai green curry. I loved it! I wish I got a better picture of it, but trust me it was so good! Over a bed of rice were vegetables (broccoli, asparagus, potatoes, squash, green beans) and black beans. I requested black beans for some protein so they added that on. When we received the order it was still warm and tasted fresh. We finished everything so fast! What a great place to come for happy hour - although I do wish that it wasn't only til 5:45pm at this location! The margarita was great and was still a special although not on the Happy Hour menu. The tacos come with only two apiece instead of three but I'm glad - as seen in the picture, they do NOT under serve you. They give you plenty of stuffing for at least three tacos and everything was delicious. They even gave me extra cilantro like requested. Service was exceptional. This is a neighborhood Mexican restaurant and it was nothing special nor anything necessarily bad. That being said, I think there are probably other restaurants in the area in this cuisine that I'd try first before coming back. The restaurant was pretty crowded for a weekday night, probably because it is relatively inexpensive and the bar area seems like a nice place to hang out. It is WAY too loud inside though, and so we waited a little longer for our reserved table in order to be able to get a table outside. But, sitting outside meant much worse table service since it didn't seem like servers frequented out there very often. The food we ordered was decent. The guacamole was good and the melted cheese dish as on point. We shared fish tacos and the steak entree as well and both were pretty tasty. My best friend and I were seriously content after devouring our pan-seared shrimp enchilada, guacamole and sweet plantains, and sitting outside people-watching on a Monday night for hours. Thought I wrote a review ages ago for this place. I went here a bit early for happy hour and they were already a bit crowded (all main seats were reserved..) The Mayan was excellent as with their other location. As they didn't have the torta ahogada like their other location (please re-add this,) I stuck with the tacos de pollo. It was good with some nice spice. There was a good amount of chicken and the tomatillo salsa/crema added some nice sour flavors. Great bartender also. Good place. La Contenta is my favorite spot for brunch in the entire city. We've been coming here for years and they only get better with time. The food is so, so delicious and their staff are wonderful. Based off our past experiences and having walked by, this was the first spot we felt comfortable venturing to for outdoor dining. Here's why: 1. The tables are actually spread out 6 feet apart. Not only that, but they set up a barrier so people walking on the sidewalk aren't toppling over your table. 2. They follow all of the necessary precautions. Everyone is wearing masks and they cover your food until it arrives at the table to ensure there's no contamination. 3. The staff is also super considerate and sweet as always! As far as food goes, you honesty can't go wrong. I rarely stray from ordering the chilaquiles. It's just so freakin' delicious. Occasionally they offer the hanger steak on the menu which is to die for. My partner always opts for the huevos rancheros - it's his favorite in Manhattan. Oh, and their brunch cocktails are excellent and exceptionally priced for the West Village. If you're looking for a great brunch spot look no further. I came here for cinco de Mayo and I must say it was amazing. This is a Mexican restaurant which is Mexican owned and I think that amazing. I love it when the owner is from the cuisine which is being cooked. So we had a reservation and did have to wait a bit more because we wanted to be seated outside. When we were seated we started to order and were informed our table was only for 90 minutes. I thought this was not being applied because I saw other tables seating at their tables for way longer than 90 minutes. So let's get to the food and the ordering. We ordered the queso fundido and I must say I still think about this dish. It has been a week but I still want to go back to eat this. The cheese was so delicious and the tortilla with it were so fresh. This was our appetizer so we shared it and it was the perfect appetizer, spicy and shareable. Then we also ordered the guacamole and that was quite delicious as well. My main course was the shrimp enchiladas and I must say I ate everything on my plate. I wiped it clean, you would have thought I liked the plate. It was so good and I just love this place. Now for the drinks, I like my margaritas frozen but the machine was not working. So I had the guava on the rocks and then the mango on the rocks both were delicious. Out waiter was nice and I would definitely go back to order more dishes off the menu. I would say they did tel us to leave once we stopped ordering but I did not see anyone get asked to leave. That was the only thing which I observed which I did not like. Wow, wow, wow! The hanger steak I had at this place was phenomenal. It was a little garlicky but whatever they had marinated it in was outstanding. Served over some potatoes and greens, I cleaned my plate. My dining companion had the chicken and she generously gave me was so juicy and flavorful (it was a half chicken, blackened but I forget the name but it was the second item on the entree list, I believe) The margarita I had was fine, nothing special and not strong. The chocolate soufflé for dessert with ice cream was very good as well. It was more like a dense cake, though. Didn't have the airiness of a soufflé but still tasty. Service was friendly but a bit scattershot. For example, my friend got there and was waiting at the hostess stand while two employees stood there chatting to one another. Another person came in and they immediately stopped talking, greeted that individual and seated her while my friend was just standing there. They apologized afterwards but the very least you can do in customer service is acknowledge a human being physically standing right in front of you. Also, the room is super loud. I got there early and the front room only had two tables. There was a table at the end with three people who were extremely loud. They tried to sit us there but we asked if we could sit somewhere else (which we did, no issues). But then they tried to sit another table there, and they also asked to be moved. It just seems weird that in an empty room you want to sit someone next to a loud group of screeching gadabouts, esp when people repeatedly ask to be moved. That aside, the food was so good I am adding this to my rotation for dinner dates. So guys, if you are single and between 35-55, you might find yourself invited to dinner here! read more

Came here first week of May, right before Cinco de Mayo. Granted 2018 spring weather has been sketchy, it was a rather warm and humid evening. I did not realize this restaurant does not have air conditioning. Don't mind the absence of air conditioning but at least the area in the back, where I was seated, lacked ventilation and fresh air, and was quite nauseating. I mention this because I'm not so sure this affected my impression of the food given so many positive reviews I had read about this place. Anyway started off with the traditional guacamole which really seemed like a pile of mashed avocados missing the flavors of pico de gallo. Queso fundido was good although a part of me really wished there was some meat in it. Tacos are pretty standard and thankfully the fish tacos, chicken tacos, and steak tacos were adequate. Probably shouldn't have ordered two different enchilada dishes (One chicken and one shrimp) as they ended up tasting the same, doused in sauces. Nothing was standing out... until the final entree came out- the CHULETAS DE PUERCO!!! It's pork chops, verdolagas, pork beans, and pomegranate sauce. Excellent combination of the meat and pomegranates! Was planning on skipping dessert but the staff surprised me with a sombrero and ice cream and broke out into a happy birthday song. Sunday late brunch at the bar... Good food solid drinks and fabulous staff. Torta cubano: great bread, fresh ingredients, full of flavor, large sandwich. Came with a couple potatoes on the side. I would've loved to have seen a couple more potatoes but I guess the sandwich is so big you don't really need it... except that I love potatoes :) Enchilada suiza: came with rice and beans which were yummy. Lots of the staff from the original location are working here. So plenty of familiar faces. 5. Menu has been expanded with lots of the classics from the first location brought over (queso, tacos.) 6. This location does breakfast, brunch, happy hour and dinner. So depending on what time you come, you will be given a specific menu. We stopped into La Contenta to sit at the bar and grab a snack during happy hour. Staff was super friendly and welcoming. They have a few fun Micheladas on the menu but I went with the standard. It had a little bit of an odd taste and I did ask them what it was but I can't remember now. After that I stuck to the shots! Their menu is more pared down than you typically find at a Mexican restaurant but so many items sound great, plus they're more likely to execute the dishes well. The Tacos de Carne Asada were packed full with succulent chunks of grilled hangar steak and the La Contenta Nachos were simple but absolutely hit the spot. Great Mexican brunch spot tucked away in Greenwich! Their cocktails are all $8 (no I'm not joking) and dishes are less than $20. Great prices for what you get! The restaurant is also dog friendly so it was perfect for me to take my dog on. The drinks were very good and refreshing. They start you off with some free chips and a great orange colored salsa. The chilaquiles were packed with flavor, but beware it really is like eating a heap of nachos covered in sauce. The enchiladas were tasty with the verde sauce. The carne asada on the tacos were actually surprisingly really good and packed with flavor. One of the instances I think getting restaurant tacos were worth it.
