    Fruit tart
    Frankie L.

The fruit tarts here are one of the best I've ever had. Fruits are really fresh and the tart is not too sweet, I think it can be refreshing at times. Service is good, quick and friendly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]A cute bakery where you line up and pick out the items you want.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Bread is also good, but the highlight is definitely the Star. Be prepared to wait in more of a line if you go on mothers or Father's Day.

Charmed by the French-style bakery storefront and tidy shelves of baked goods, I stopped in at La Farine to purchase a bread loaf. While La Farine has a smaller pastry selection than its neighboring bakeries on College Ave., it has an impressive variety of baguettes and sourdough loafs. I ordered a mini kalamata olive loaf, which was the perfect size for snacking. Service was quick and efficient, and I took my bread to-go to enjoy at home. I appreciated how the loaf is baked with more olives per square inch than any olive bread I have ever tasted. The sourdough had a good chew without being too tough and was soft and fluffy on the inside. The tangy sourdough and briny olives needed little else but were enhanced with a pat of French butter. On my next visit, I'd like to try La Farine's other sourdough loaves and baguettes.

What a ridiculous display of delicious breads and baked goods! A must stop. My wife also got a sourdough starter so was extra happy!

Pastries were really buttery, flaky, and they had a very unique selection of different desserts that I would love to be able to all try one day. Their mocha cake was incredibly rich and delicious, which I would highly recommend, and we also ordered their lemon shortbread that had a very strong taste of lemon but it was too sweet for my own palate.

Was in the area and decided to drop by because I love a pastry and this place did not disappoint! We ordered a morning bun, choclatine, and a mini chocolate chip pumpkin cake. The morning bun was delicious, crispy croissant layers but also soft and doughy (not undercooked but just right) on the inside. The chocolate chip pumpkin cake was also good and had lots of chocolate chips but was a little dry for my liking. The choclatine was my favorite and is easily one of the best chocolatw croissants I've had in the area. Everything was also reasonably priced. [[HIGHLIGHT]]All in all delicious pastries, charming shop, and quick service.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I cant wait to go back and try everything else

For Christmas my friend bought my family and I this fruit tart. Yes, it looks like any other fruit tart, but wow, it didn't even last 24 hours. We demolished it. Did I mention I'm super picky about crust and custard? Well, this fruit tart knocked it out of the park! Perfect crust, amazing flavor, and once again it didn't even last 24 hours because we ate it all. The fruit was fresh too, just so you know. This should be a holiday tradition, eating a yummy fruit tart for the holidays! 5 stars delicious!

Popped in quick for some baked goods to go while walking around the neighborhood with some friends. We got the chocolate chip and raspberry walnut scones where were both great! Every single item looked great. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Setting felt similar to a bakery in France.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Very short line on a weekend late morning. Would go back for more!

Picked up some pastries right before they closed. Chose the fruit tart, ham and cheese puff pastry, and an apple filled croissant swirl. Everything I have tried from this bakery is made well and just the right amount of sweetness or savory depending on the baked item.

Pretty good, it's better than some other bakeries, but it's not Porto's! I didn't really find anything extraordinary here but everything was good enough at least, definitely not bad. I'd rate it around 3.5-3.9 overall, better than 3 stars so I rounded up to 4 They are friendly and quick. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Place is cute, stuff is very nicely presented, I love how it looks, just the place is kinda small.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It feels a bit crowded and I got confused on where I should stand after 2 more people came in after me. Then 2 more people showed up and it felt really crowded. I think the lining up and ordering system could be more efficient but I'm not sure how exactly to go about making it better lol. I don't know how they could have more than like 5 customers in here at the same time. I think they can comfortably serve up to 2-3 people at the same time at most. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Definitely not good for groups. Ideally just come in alone and spend no more than 2-3 minutes inside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Good thing everything is made and ready to go and there's no seating or it would be a nightmare![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

I always stop here for dessert after my eye doctor appointments--it's become my little tradition! Today I got the fruit tart and the chocolate eclairs. Both were delicious (as always). It's honestly hard to choose because everything here is so good!

The fruit tart is superior to many, probably the best in the Bay. The pear and ginger tart is very strong in ginger flavor, so if you don't like ginger then you won't like this at all. They also sell bread, cookies and other pastries. I've tried things here and there but nothing stood out like the fruit tart. It's a crowd favorite at parties.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]There is no seating area but the place is packed with goodies.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I went with the layered cake and it was pretty good. Not too sweet.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]What a cute little bakery! Located on College Avenue near Rockridge, La Marine is such a classic spot![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] A good variety of baked good to choose from and loads of different breads! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Their walls are lined with different loaves and baguettes, so nice![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I opted for a simple sour baguette and an apple croissant. Delicious! The bread went with everything I was making that weekend and made a really good sandwich too. The apple croissant was light and crispy, and is easily a favorite of mine now. Service is quick and everyone was patient with me as I made my choices! Totally check this spot out!

I remembered that decision as we drove down Claremont on our way to Sweet Maria's. On our way back up, we stopped off at Souvenir Coffee for a couple of sandwiches and one coffee. The ambiance and service were top notch. Also, there's usable WiFi. I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich with bacon as an add-on, and then muttered something about a macchiato. After the person taking my order repeated back my drink as a cortado, I agreed that a cortado would be an even better choice than the macchiato that I had in my mind's eye. The cortado came out first, followed not long afterwards by our sandwiches. Both the drink and the grilled cheese sandwich were excellent; we clearly had a 5-star experience. Souvenir Coffee struck me more as a drink place with a few food items than as a lunch destination. I know the high reputation of the sandwiches at the Star Grocery next door. If Souvenir is be OK with my combining an espresso drink with a Star sandwich, I'll try that next.

The cafe is a community watering hole. A mix of neighbors hanging out, students and working folks on their computers, families dropping by--just a steady flow of customers. The cafe isn't too big. There are tables inside for pairs, as well as some outdoor dining--definitely a cozy neighborhood charm to it. To drink, I opted for one of their specials. I got an Iced Maple Chai with Soy Milk. The drink was on the sweeter side, with barely any chai flavor. It also didn't come with any peculiar ice. My friend got her own drink and noted it was pretty intense, with minimal seasonal flavoring. I guess we were expecting a bit more from a popular spot! Cole Coffee is a neighborhood favorite. When I go into a cafe, dishes usually include sandwiches, baked sweets, pancakes or waffles. But there are times when I look at the menu and I'm trying to wake up, so I want a simpler menu. Here, they have the toast with butter. Yes, this is the perfect dish for the moment that I tend to have when choosing the first meal of the day. I also love their other menu, which is the toast with a canned fish. The cafe also sells these alongside coffee beans. The toast is sliced thick with a generous smear of butter. The toast surface has a golden shine from the melted butter. Every bite has a juicy butter taste. On the side of toast is a side of a beautiful semi-boiled egg with a runny yolk -- my favorite type of way to eat yolks. Next time, when I visit here, I will definitely try the canned fish and eat that for breakfast. That is another good breakfast menu I would love to have and try with a cup of coffee.

The good: Their vanilla latte is genuinely good. Flavorful, balanced, and not overly sweet. The food is decent too. The bad: Why is a vanilla latte pushing $7 these days and still arriving nowhere near the top of the cup? When I asked about it, I was told it's just one ice cube short of the normal volume. But consistently? Maybe that's what they mean by Ain't Normal. My bigger issue is the service. Maybe I've caught them on off days, but the staff has consistently come off with a bit of attitude. Nobody needs a parade when they order coffee, but a little warmth goes a long way, especially when you're charging specialty coffee prices. At the end of the day, the coffee is good enough that I've come back more than once. I just wish the cups were fuller and the customer service matched the quality of the drinks.
