Nice little mom & pop dive with friendly people who work here. This place isn't meticulous, and I'm sort of charmed by that. Warm salsa was served at my table, and when I asked for a cold version, the nice lady brought me a chilled bowl of oniony cilantro-laden nectar. Wonderful indeed. When I return to my native Texas, I make a point of eating Tex-Mex or Mexican food at least once a day. And this past week, when I was back home visiting my family, was no different. Of the eight Tex-Mex/Mexican meals I had, my meal at La Frontera was, by far, the best. And the chili relleno was undoubtedly the most delectable chili relleno I've ever had in my life (and I love me some chilis rellenos). I now understand why my dad has been raving about this place. It's a bit of a dive, but the food is exceptional. I am thinking that next time I get back down to Dickinson, the good folks at La Frontera may be serving me meals every day throughout my stay. Oh, in addition to the chili relleno, I recommend both the queso and guac as appetizers. And the horchata (beverage) is outstanding. read more

You get what you pay for. Mole poblano was terrible. Chicken tasted cheap. Rice had no flavor and tasted reheated. Beans were greasy The beef fajita enchiladas were supposedly a house specialty. They were the worst. Tortilla was terrible and the cooks decided to pour some kind of nacho cheese on top. If I'd have know that I would've ordered nachos. Not enchiladas. Ok so I have been here several time now so I feel ready to give it a proper review. It is a small place with a friendly staff. To me it straddles Taqueria and Tex Mex food. It does a passable job at both but does not really blow me away with either style food. As for the taqueria style the Torta milanesa was really big and the bread and toppings were great. The milanesa itself was ok but there was not enough of it to taste. The Carne Guisada looked good but was super bland pretty flavorless. On the Tex Mex front I had a combo platter and the beans and rice were both really good . It came with a ground beef taco which was ok, a chicken tamale which was bland and mostl masa, and a decent small cheese enchilada. We also tried the chimichanga which was good and crisp with a nice queso topping and was filled with their ground beef which is kind of bland. The one issue I had on each visit was the food was delivered and it was not very hot. I had to send food back once as the refried beans were plain cold. They do give you 2 salsas which are both red. one is warm and smooth and the other is a cold chunkier salsa. Both are very good but neither is very spicy. Overall I will have to come back. The menu is very extensive and I need to keep trying so I can find their best meal. I also need to point out that the prices are very inexpensive with several lunch platters being only 4.99. Been going here for years now and feel like I can definitely write a descent review. The staff has always been great and acomodating. The food is always good and tastes more like authentic homestyle cooked mexican food than some of the other local mexican food chains. No monkeying around on this one. read more

I am so disappointed I'm a proud Dickinsonian my kiddos are military brats and I wanted to bring them to the place I ate at when I was a kid. The queso was water I sent it back. My margarita had no alcohol and every other sip was salt :(. My daughter ordered a quesadilla, my son, a burger ( he didn't finish his burger and whispered it was dry but the fries were awesome) I got a guacamole salad and the beans were water on the bottom I ended up eating the guac with chips and leaving the rest. We got down the street not even 5 mins and my daughter threw all the food back up. When I called I was told no refund and they hung up. I drove up there again and was told no refund and she called the owner the owner blamed me said the food was great and asked if I ate it all. I was not going to speak with her so I gave the phone back to the cashier and said it was unacceptable and that they were better than this she refunded the money but I'm just so sad to see what this has become they were an amazing restaurant with amazing food :( I posted this review on their FB and they have either blocked me or taken down their fb business page as well read more

I tried to like this place, but it's a no go. Stop for breakfast and ordered the barbacoa (Mexican Bar B QUE ) in a taco. It was fatty and taste less. Also, ordered the cheese caso and it was canned product that was poor quality. Finally, the breakfast burrito stuffing was very light and should of been a enchilada. Alright, so this restaurant is one I frequent, but only for certain menu items. My husband and I love their menudo, (beef tripe soup, a mexican delicacy), it is always made fresh and only available on the weekends. It comes served with fresh hand made tortillas, cilantro, diced jalapeno, onions, and lime wedges. Also, another item I love are their gorditas, it's a corn meal pita looking thicker tortilla that gets opened in the middle and it has cheese and the meat of your choice. I've been a couple times to see if anything would change but as always i'm disappointed.. This place always looks dirty when I come in. The salsas aren't even that great! When I order Horchata I expect for it to taste good and not like some watered down cinnamon water. I hope they can work on the cleanliness. Oh my god their homemade tortillas are seriously to die for. This place is in the ghetto and some items are a bit sketchy, but you just need to know what to order. My husband and I have been a few times and we both enjoy ordering the gorditas. I like their caldo de res. I've tried the enchiladas and chicken soup and carne guisada, all weren't that great. In other words I've had better. Also the salsa is good. read more

This place is very close to a path I frequently travel and curiosity finally lured me in. It's a family run operation and I find certain comfort in that. Far from fancy but comfortable and casual. As a side note, I avoid chain restaurants whenever possible. I've now had several dishes there but the stand out winner time and again has been the chile relleno. A poblano pepper filled with your choice of meat or cheese and topped with a terrific (read lick the plate good) red sauce. This is a mild dish in case one is wondering. It is served with smoky pork flavored refried beans and an adequate mexican rice. I ask for the relleno to be filled with cheese. It is fresh made upon ordering and served with, to my mind, the most incredible red sauce I have ever had anywhere!. I know I've already alluded to this sauce but, I think it deserves a second acknowledgment. In fact it was so good, the next time I went there I asked for them to sell me a pint of the stuff. For good measure I also bought a pint of the ranchero sauce. I froze some of the sauce but, for several days we had the BEST huevos rancheros I could imagine. I could have looked for a recipe but why bother when they sell it so reasonably. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the crazy good home made tortillas served with the meal and the tortilla chips offered upon arrival. They were in a word perfect. In my to-go order I received a paper bag full of these chips. I think it says a lot when the next day there are no grease stains on the bag that any other chip would have saturated. On the down side, I can not recommend the chile con queso. It was dismally bland. But the table salsa in cold and warm version are moderately spicy and pack zing. What I call worth the burn. I have been going to La Frontera for lunch and dinner for the past year or so, and I always leave feeling satisfied with my meal. The chips and salsa are good and fresh, and the meals are above average. What led me to finally write a review for this place was the sopapillas. As previously posted, just another way over rated Mexican restaurant. Server was very polite and attentive. Food was a far cry from 5 star worthy. Margaritas were all sweet and sour and no tequila, made it hard to drink. Beans looked like watered down canned beans, queso also tasted and looked canned, and the ranch tasted sour, almost rotten milkish. Guess you gotta try all the places around to find the good ones, but I'll be skipping this place from now on. read more

Great food at a great price! It is a little hole in the wall Mexican food place. You can dine in or call in a to go order and they will have it ready really quick. I stopped in for breakfast burritos. Unfriendly, apathetic staff and barely acceptable food quality. Got 2 burritos and 2 tacos and received 3 tiny salsa containers. Good tortillas but the eggs & bacon and the eggs & chorizo fillings were flavorless and soggy and greasy. I live in DIckinson and I'd rather drive to the Taqueria in Texas CIty than eat at La Frontera ever again. If you're driving by... do yourself a favor and keep on driving. read more
