I found this restaurant through groupon and was the first time I tried Peruvian food. Yesterday, I went with my sister around 6:20ish I was able to get a maracuya sour it was a fruity drink it was great . When we got there we went through the back area where there are live performers, the music was great. However, there were no people in the restaurant but me my sister and the family members of the live performer. My sister and I started with an appetizer which was the papa rellena it was really good and very well done! We really recommend it. For our main dish we got a jalea especial it was pretty much a seafood plate it had a citrus flavor and a side of rice with plantain chips. Our waitor was very nice and made us feel welcome. When the tab came the manager accepted our groupon our tab came about 65ish and with the groupon it came out to be 25. Overall, I would definitely recommend this Peruvian restaurant but I would probably go at a different time where there are more customers. read more

Staff was so nice! Went with his recommendation for Lomo Saltado and I tried Ceviche de Poscado. I was amazed! I had never had Peruvian food before and the Ceviche de Poscado was, quite honestly, the most delicious thing I can ever recall eating. The spicy sauce pulled together the whole meal - the potatoes and yucca were soft inside but crunchy on the outside and mixed perfectly in the sauce. The fish was like no fish I've ever had before - the way it was prepared and presented and the taste was sublime! Husband and I came here for a late lunch date on a Friday. Was not too busy. We ordered the Papa Lahuancaina, Anticuchos, Lomo Saltado and Carapulcra. It was all delish and we will definitely be back. Chica morada was not too sweet and the Maracuya was great. Peruvian food around the Bay Area is pricey, so I think this place charges right. Service was good. Server seated us, brought out drinks, appetizers and entrees within an expected time frame. Have to give this place credit. Had the loma de sirloin. Very disappointed. The steak was dry and not juicy at all. I'm the rice tasted bland like they didn't even use salt. The onions felt like they were still raw. I already had plans to go to dinner with a bunch of friends and after hearing about their $3 dollar wine special, i was sold. There were two people seated and after waiting about three minutes for anyone to even come out and greet us, the host then gathered a bunch of menus but, when we asked when they close (we didn't see before entering), he looked at us and said 10pm. Supposedly, certain items (5 non alcoholic beverages and a plate of Yuca Frita appetizer shared by all) were given to us "on the house" because we had to wait a long time for our food. La Furia Chalaca is a great restaurant, located a couple blocks from Jack London Square. Beautifully decorated inside. I mean this place looks so nice inside that I thought our bill was going to be double what it actually was. With a super friendly wait staff and delicous food, this place is definitely worth the short walk from Jack London. Came in with a big group of friends for dinner and Thursday night drink specials. There were a couple good wines and Peruvian pisco drinks to choose from. We chose to get the tapas plates as appetizers one hot one cold. Most excellent! The ceviche is amazing, and the causa is pure Peruvian comfort food. All our entrees were delicious and I'm really going to have a tough time choosing between them all next time I eat here. Lomo Saltado is always a good choice as are the ceviche entree or the Carapulcra(braised pork). Bottom Line: Great location, delicious food, and upscale feel without the upscale price. Had to tell a waiter how to make a Martini. He spoke limited English. After several attempts to be seated (remember we were the only ones in the place) we were seated after 30 minutes. We were on our way to Hanh's Hibachi for some chopchae but changed our minds when he saw La Furia Chalaca on Broadway. He mentioned how good the sangria is and decided to check it out since it was my first time here. We ordered a single carafe and one side of yuca fries. The sangria had fruit cocktail in it and it was a good idea as it was nice to munch on them after drinking. However I wasn't impressed with their yuca fries. I've had better at Limon Rotisserie. Theirs were fried but had way too many strands; it felt like I was eating a wooden broom. LOL I don't know if I'd come back here again. We'd need to order more next time to get the full experience. My partner and I had a terrible experience there. We ordered the Choros a la Chalaca (mussels topped with chopped red onion, lime juice and cilantro) and they came out so spicy and extremely acidic from too much lime juice. They were also covered in raw red onion and cilantro- they were terrible. We tried ordering 2 other dishes but they didn't have any shellfish whatsoever. They also didn't have any bread that evening. We ended up ordering a chicken dish that came with rice. It was basically chicken strips, soggy fried potatoes and a mountain of cooked red onion- it was $17. We also were "served" a piece of store-bought chocolate birthday cake that was "on the house." I only know this because I saw it just sitting there, half eaten on the counter- it may have been brought it for a staff birthday or something- how tacky is that?! We went here for a large birthday group. The restaurant did they're best to accomodate us even tho everybody was super late. I got there early with a couple of girls and we had pisco sours and wine at the bar. The woman working was very nice and we chatted with her. There was live music playing which was a nice touch. The restaurant is small but very cute. I ordered the papas a la huancaina, and the estofado de pollo. The potatoes weren't quite like how I remembered in Peru. My chicken was good but I just got a drumstick. I also tasted the papa relleno which I really liked, and the mussels. The mussels have HELLA red onions but was still good. The pisco sours were just ok, and I was disappointed with my chiccha morada. Service was pretty slow. We had two large tables that ordered together but our table was completely done eating when the others just received their meals. My waitress told me no when I asked to substitute plaintains for potatoes. She said "we can't, its already made." WTF? I actually give it a 3.5 stars. Ok, my view may be a little different so let me explain. My mother is from Peru and was #9 out of 10 children! she never learned how to cook Peruvian dishes until recently and her style is definitely more "Mexican" since she's in SoCal. I have been born and raised in Cali and been to Peru a few times in my lifetime. Let me just say that no food is ever going to taste "exactly" how it would from the country, you can come close, but it's just ridiculous to think it's going to taste like your Mom made it so long ago. A well known drink in Peru is the Pisco Sour (alocholic) and the Chicha (a blue corn sweet drink) and they are good here....and if you've never had an "Inca cola" and you like cream sodas, give it a try! We went for Valentines day, and I've been here a couple times, but it's been a couple years. We got the "special for two for 70$" and it came with your choice of papas a la Huanacaina (which are cold peeled potatoes served with a creamy yellow-cheese sauce that had a little kick to them) or ceviche. YUM. The main course had 4 different choices and I got the beef saltado (which is a tomato-carrot based sauce w/onions and potatoes) and the honey got the Fish Paella, which was a slight disappointment since it only had mostly shrimp and some squid, no fish. We also got 2 free glasses of wine with dinner and tickets to some club afterwards that we weren't interested in. I would have most likely ordered off the menu on any other occasion. Now, the "surprise" dessert was VERY sad. It was a chocolate cake that had an oreo cookie crust with fake whip cream, I have no doubt it came from Safeway or some place like that. Huge disappointment on that end since I've had anything from rice pudding to flan to cakes in Peru that are very easy to make.... It inspired me to open up my Peruvian cookbook and try and make something soon. This was a small quaint little spot in Oakland. The ceviche was tasty... but that was the only thing I really enjoyed here. The beef dish I had was a bit dry. The appetizers were on the small side - 2 bites or so, so I'm not sure that was worth it. I had the chicken skewers which were good, but not very memorable. The only reason I'm giving this establishment two stars is because of the fact that the food smelled fantastic. I came here on a Friday while there was a live jazz band. The restaurant barely had any patrons, no more than 15. My friends were seated at a table next to the bar and because they already ordered, we asked the bartender for a menu. She said ok, walked off and for the next 10 minutes, proceeded to serve everyone at the bar instead of handing me a menu. I thought maybe she was a little scatter brained so when our waiter finally came over to the bar she told him, "that table needs menus" pointing to our table. Our waiter disappears for a good 15 minutes so I ask the bartender if I could get a mojito. She says sure. I waited 25 minutes for her to even acknowledge me. She did almost everything in her power to ignore me and our table. Our waiter disappears too since he decided he didn't need to check on any of his patrons. Finally after 25 minutes she comes to the table and says "I don't want you to think I forgot about you, but we're out of mint. I checked, and I don't want to make a mojito without mint." If this would have been told to me 20 minutes prior, I would understand and reorder something else. But instead she spent the time talking and bullshitting around. It was too slow to pretend to be that busy. And then on top of that, it took 15 minutes to get the check for my friend and another 15 to get it corrected after they attempted to charge us for a drink we never received. I discovered La Furia Chalaca when I noticed "wine and tapas" posted on Yelp events. I expected swinging singles clinking wine glasses while choosing from small plates of Peruvian delights. Imagine my surprise when I dined alone for over thirty minutes without music or television. None of the elements of a perfect "wine and tapas" evening as mentioned on Yelp events were in effect last night. La Furia Chalaca is centrally located in Downtown Oakland near public transportation and other businesses. It could work as a major after work hot spot if properly promoted. There are bar chairs and a Plasma television at the front of the restaurant, and a long and comfortable looking sofa along one wall. These would be perfect for a networking event or a singles mixer. I can see it now! La Furia Chalaca is a more upscale version of Peruvian classics than those found at Los Balcones del Peru in Los Angeles (Hollywood). Lomo saltado comes with rice and potatoes rather than the noodles I am used to. I had a two glasses of a California Cab for three dollars each. I also had an appetizer and dessert. Love this place for lunch! Where do you get a white tablecloth meal for $10. Lunch specials are $10, with two to choose from, and comes with an excellent mixed green salad with goat cheese, fresh french bread & butter and a soda. Generous portions of seafood - calamari, shrimp, muscles are really good. This place is not much to look out from the outside with it's faded sign and no potted plants or anything outside to let you know it's there, but inside it is like a sanctuary. Had seafood paella last time which you don't see too often in Oakland, and was under $15. Have lots of interesting bottles of red wines at their bar that I am dying to try. Brought my marketing work group there and everyone was impressed and had a good time. White tableclothes and excellent decor make it great place to relax. Love to go there and read the paper during lunch while being served great food. If you work in Oakland City Center it is a nice walk if the weather is good - down Broadway towards Jack London Square. Date night, Friday night, Wifey found La Furia on yelp and was looking forward to a Peruvian epicurean adventure. Unfortunately, what we experienced was truly disappointing. The sangria was super sweet and tasted more like kool-aid than wine. Was that canned fruit cocktail in there? Ceviche is one of Wifey's all time favorite foods. The ceviche mixto at La Furia Chalaca was so sour she coudn't eat it. The fish was fresh, the seafood was fresh, but the dish was so tart, neither of us could stomach it. When they cleared our plates, hers was almost untouched. My Lomo Saltado was cooked several stages past well-done, the beef had dried out and was tough and flavorless. The french fries underneath tasted like they'd been made a few hours ago. They were limp and soggy with sauce. The waitress was brand new and didn't really know anything about any of the dishes or drinks. Luckily, she was attentive and quick, checking in on us regularly.
