Rounding up slightly simply for their incredible restaurant week deal. They have a skirt steak, 2 sides, empanada and shrimp avocado salad, all for $20.21. The steak was yummy, tender and juicy. I do wish it came with a chimichurri though. The mashed potatoes and spinach were both good but pretty standard. The salad was surprisingly good. You get 3 good-sized shrimp, egg and avocados all of which makes for nice additions to the greens. The empanada filling was excellent. We got delivery so it was a little soggy but that's hard to help. We also ordered the tilapia francese with a side of broccoli. Both were just okay and could use more flavor. The francese sauce was good but fish itself was bland. I'd definitely recommend trying them out for the month-long special or those items a la carte after the special is over! read more

Queens has plentiful family-friendly restaurants catering to the many diverse ethnic groups that call it home. One such is La Fusta, here for over 40 years, an Argentinian restaurant specializing in parrilladas, or grilled meats. With a series of connected dining areas reminiscent of a warren, it is cozy, although tables can be arranged to host large groups. Warm yellow walls are festooned with equestrian-related photos. The wait staff have that particular quality possessed by those with extensive experience: poised and assured, with a sense of humor, not missing a beat if they forget something (not so common considering they don't write down orders) and correcting promptly. Their attentiveness includes the small details for young children. And there's a singer on staff who provides an impressive rendition of "Happy Birthday." La Fusta serves delicious, satisfying food. Nothing fancy, but food to really dig into, with impressive portions. The appetizer highlight is surely the flaky, delicious beef empanadas nicely accented with chopped olives (also available stuffed with chicken or spinach, but regulars are united in their acclaim for the deep-fried beef ones). Tortilla de papas fare less well, tasting much like an American omelette with potato. The avocado salad with shrimp is a favorite, an enticing mix of avocado, watercress, hearts of palm, red onion, hard boiled egg, tomato, and plump shrimp. Refreshing yet substantial, and quite accessible even to the meat-eaters. The parilladas are a star, specifically the succulent skirt steak, worth getting a large order of. Short ribs are quite good too. The mixed grill is a good way to sample a variety of meats, including offal and sausages. Pork chops are thick and tender. The accompanying sides of garlic spinach and broccoli must receive a serious dose of meat juices to explain their tastiness. And their fragrant, beautifully executed chimichurri can enhance everything else, not just the bread. The dessert list is surprisingly extensive. Classic flan is substantial and smooth, a good version. Banana crepe flambé has the requisite table-side flame show but the taste of rum overwhelms it. Other crepes are good with ice cream. House sangria is easy-drinking, tasting of wine, and a very respectable version. Or have a glass from their extensive Argentinian wine list. No surprise that reds dominate the list. Beers are limited to mainstream ones. La Fusta is a great place for groups. The generous portions are certainly best shared. The value is fantastic for the quality. I don't even know where to start. I guess I'll begin by saying that it's downright shameful that it took me this long to come back after my first review. The beef empanadas were just as amazing as I remember, with that wondrous chimichurri sauce that I insist on pouring on everything. It's so garlicky and perfect, I have no shame in just dipping my bread right into the serving dish. I ordered the half skirt steak with fries and my friend ordered the Pork Chops a la Portuguesa with Linguini (pork chops in a red sauce smothered in onions and red peppers with a side of pasta). Both were delicious but we ended up loving each others dishes more than what we ordered so we switched. The steak was great quality and cooked perfectly, and a great price for the portion. But the real star was that pork chop dish. Oh my gosh, the flavor! I can't even, all those vegetables, in that tomato based sauce, it was incredible. I might have told the waiter it changed my life. I'm kinda nuts about food. And the portions were all huge. The only thing I didn't care for was the side of broccoli we got, it was overpowered with olive oil and even the clearly visible roasted garlic didn't come through, and the fries are skippable, but that stuff isn't what you come for anyway so it's no big. I was gushing so much about how awesome everything was, our waiter asked us if this was our first time here. I explained we had come two Halloweens ago for Jeff O's Trick or Eat. He actually remembered the event and brought over the owner Steve to meet us because he had been there as well! Steve was such an awesome guy, told us all about how the restaurant is a family business that's been open for over 40 years. And it really shows. This place came highly recommended from someone who's been coming here for almost 30 yrs. So we decided to check it out for my mom's birthday this past weekend. Located right across the street from Elmhurst Hospital, it was quite the trek for me coming from Brooklyn, but it was worth the ride. Environment: Family oriented, busy, dimly lit, old school decor. Lots of fun after a few drinks and some chatting. Food: Moderately priced but they serve generous portions (except for the garlic shrimp at $18). The small skirt steak was average size - not sure why they call it small. The housemade chimichurri they serve with their also housemade, toasty bread is the best I've ever had. We had the mixed empanadas to start and those were hefty also. The avocado salad was my favorite. It was loaded with so much for $12 - add shrimp for a bucks more. The salad reminded me of a shrimp ceviche. The most disappointing dish was my own - garlic shrimp. The shrimps were jumbo sized but there were about 4 pieces in an orange colored cream sauce that didn't taste like garlic at all. We shared 1 pitcher of regular sangria ($27) and 2 of the sangria brava (stronger - $35). I didn't taste the difference, but I felt a buzz either way. A meal for two which included a red meat dish and a chicken dish and side orders of spinach, broccoli, and mashed potatoes as well as appetizers (dishes) were Simply Way, way below par. I give it three stars Because this platform doesn't allow me to give a half a star. If I could I would only give it two stars and half. The table service is way below par... It was just so unattentive, cold, and unpleasant. It made the dining experience boring and annui quickly set in...with the aim of just leaving as soon as possible. So this place is AMAZING! I've been going to La Fusta for more than 10 years now, my family and I really like it and enjoy every meal we have over there. Our order for the most part stays the same...their house salad or shrimp with avocado salad are the best! (i sometimes order a salad with a empanada carne just for any day to go cuz im always thinking about it! hehehe) They always say to skip the bread, cant do that...its always too fresh and warm to skip on it... as entrees we order La Parrillada which for two people is enough for four people....how is the meat? Perfect, is the best way to describe it...juicy and perfectly well done! The sides? get the broccoli and spinach which are delicious. And the dessert either the Flan with caramelo or the Panqueque quemado al ron are the best. Really guys if you have never been there, its so worth it! La Fusta has been in the film of my family life since I was a child. I have been coming here for many years. Comforted by the consistency of food quality, service and the vibe. Unfortunately, last night was my last time there. While I recognize that many businesses have struggled and bouncing back, it is apparent to me that owners of La Fusta are comfortable with a disregard for their loyal client base in the not affluent working class neighborhood they are in. Why I say disregard is due to a disinterest in informing their patrons of their shortfalls at the moment when we sit down or when we arrive: i.e. welcome and I am sorry for some things that won't go as you expect. i.e. the a.c. not functioning, being understaffed, no wine list but selling us a Malbec that was cold and lastly serving us fries we ordered neglecting to let us know they were sweet potato fries. At the price we are spending at La Fusta there are so many places to go. It was clear to us how overworked their staff was when their manager and another person were just sitting by the kitchen. After so many decades of loyal following and consistent experience, La Fusta is no longer what it was and sadly, I don't think they care. read more

Why does this place have such high reviews? The service is horrendous. And the food lacks salt. We ordered all the empanadas available. Chicken, beef and spinach. And they were all tasteless. The baked provolone was just baked provolone and didnt have the prosciutto that was written in the menu. And then topped with a massive amount of dried parsley. Yuck. The fettucine alfredo was okay. La Fusta is a charming, old-fashioned Argentine restaurant located right across the street from Elmhurst Hospital. Spontaneously walked in for dinner with bae the other week as we were walking down Broadway. Their menu is equally influenced by European dishes and South American ones, which really surprised us. Ordered a pitcher of their tasty red sangria while our entrées of Chicken Champignon and Chicken Breast Roquefort were being prepared in the kitchen. Both were very savory and complimented the sautéed broccoli and mashed potato sides well. I was particularly impressed by how dense and flavorful the sauces they were served in were. Their Chimichurri was far better than the one I make, so we spoke to the staff and got the gist of their version and have made it ever since. The Chimichurri was fresh but needed a tad of acid, so we added a bit of red vinegar & it was great. They start you off with some bread and chimichurri which is really garlicky, really good. We also had a pitcher of Sangria, but I started ordering martinis afterwards. Sangria is a bit too weak for me. Drinks were strong. We ordered the special mixed grill for 2. I liked the blood sausage so much that I had to get another. The skirt steak was okay, not something I would get again. Short ribs are always flavorful. Our waiter was attentive even though we weren't in the main dining area. I am addicted to this place. ADDICTED!!! I came her with a friend one night because he claimed that they had the best steak in Queens. I didn't believe him until I had the a bite of the skirt steak. It was wonderfully cooked, moist, mouth watering, juicy, meaty goodness. Every single bite was eaten. I almost never finish my food but I had to finish this. The tender skirt steak was not the only thing that I loved and recommend. The garlic sauce they give you with bread is absolutely amazing. It is not just an oily mess, but it has a little acidity and goes well with the meat and the bread. I also recommend the beef empanadas. They were seasoned perfectly, fresh, and I am pretty sure were crafted by hand. It was really great. Along with all this delicious food we ordered the red sangria which is not to be missed. Not to be missed are their famous homemade empanadas, each one is a flaky meat pie filled with perfectly seasoned beef, egg and an olive in the middle. The parillada, or grilled meat platter is what to eat here. A mound of skirt steak, sausage and sweet breads, that are cooked to perfection. And what better to wash all this down, than a pitcher of their homemade sangria! Be warned, its super delicious, and it has a nasty habit of creeping up on you. read more

Start with the bread and chimichurri, which is the best chimichurri I've ever had. Chock full of garlic and herbs, I poured it on everything. The mashed potatoes were just ok. Better than out of a box, but nothing to indicate anything amazing. I had the skirt steak medium and it was made very well, and it was huge. Lots of flavor. Note: the small order of the Mixed Grill is probably good for 1.5 - 2 people. The large order is probably for 4 people. Again, huge portions. Very casual vibe, waiters not overly friendly, but provided water and checked up on us frequently. Good enough service. We have been living here for almost 2 decades, and have walked passed this place many a times, and finally decided to give it a try. I ordered the Short ribs, medium. My husband ordered a medium rare steak avocado salad, and we had two empanadas as apps. We were wowed by the olive oil garlic dip for the bread, and the fries were also very tasty. sadly, that is where the good good ended. The empanadas were dry, and lack flavor. We dipped them in the garlic oil, which made it very tasty. The entrees were a bigger let down. The steak was rough, and chewy. Not good quality steak. My short ribs was no better. Although it had decent flavor, it was also rough, and chewy. Maybe my teeth are not strong enough to Chew through the ribs. I see people writing how bad the staff were, and I kind of agree. Our waiter was kind of friendly, and sort of attentive. However, when I tried to ask for the check, he was chatting with the bar tender. He give me a "hold on" signal. 1 minuet later, when the bar tender finished his story, he came over. When I paid for the bill on the iPad, the total was $1 more than my calculation (with 18% tip). I did not fuss over $1, but still not happy about the fact. Don't think we will be going back for dinner again, but will go for the garlic oil dip, and fries. read more

I work across the street and I finally decided to come here and try the skirt steak. I dinned in during my lunch break for their lunch specials and ordered the Skirt Steak with Russian Salad and French Fries Provenzal and the Chicken Milanese with Broccoli and Sauteed Onions. After placing my order, the waiter came around with a bread basket with chimichurri and butter. I love when places give complimentary bread as we wait for our meal. The bread was not the best, but I really enjoyed in with the chimichurri sauce. Regarding the lunch specials, the skirt steak is definitely the way to go. The steak was delicious for its price. Out of all the sides, I enjoyed the french fries because it was seasoned perfectly. To end my meal, I ordered the apple crepe flambe, a pancake with huge apple pieces and drenched in Bacardi. The meal started well with the one of the most beautiful and flavorful salads I've ever had. A family salad with shrimp, avocado, watercress, red onion and the perfect amount of dressing. Delicious when paired with a rich and meaty, beef empanada. Where I noticed things started going down hill is when the empanada was just slightly undercooked. Raw pastry started to finish the last couple of bites I had after I finished my salad. I came to this place with a few of my friends. 3 total. First one ordered a shell steak, second one ordered chicken breast with molleja, and chinchulines to share with the third. Finally I ordered a salmon with French fries. The expensive shell steak was ordered medium and came medium well with no seasoning, a side of rice was ordered but they were out of stock at the time. The substitute French fries came to the table undercooked with a bite of semi-hard potatoe in the center instead of the crispy and fluffy texture you get from a properly cooked pomme fry. The molleja and chinchulines came cooked well, but I still had problems chewing through the meat and what felt like a cooked silver skin. May be this was the norm for this cut? The side of broccoli looked like it has seen better days as it looked much like a limp Chinese stir fry. The chicken breast came and... Well, it was definitely reheated. I've worked in a number of kitchens and worked with a lot of leftover cooked chicken. This piece that we got was cooked a number of minutes ago(probably to rare) then finished cooking when it was ordered. The texture and after taste we got from the portion could only be explained this way. Finally my salmon which was cooked wonderfully succulent and topped with a beautiful caramelized few slices of garlic, shallots and parsley. It sat in a tangy salmon jui too that I finished nicely with a squeeze of light lemon juice. But the fries that came with my order were just as undercooked as the first. Over all the food was not as good as I had hoped for it to be. I definitely will not come back for a while. The service was nice, but we were always left thirsty for a drink of water as our glasses emptied. The saving grace to this whole unseasoned experience was the starting salad. No idea why this place is reviewed so high. My friends and came here Saturday evening for dinner. We ordered spinach empanada, mixed american grill, and mushroom sauce over chicken. First off, ALL their meat were overcooked. When waiter took our order, he didn't even ask how we wanted our meat cooked. We had to flag him down and tell him we wanted medium (thinking this was a good place. We would have ordered medium rare, if we knew they don't know how to cook their meat properly). The short ribs were so dry, our jaws hurt at the end. All the meat dishes were disappointing. Also, each dish comes with one side. We got mash potatoes and brocoli. They were bother disappointing. Over blanched brocoli heads (or stems, there were more stems than the actual heads, and mashed potatoes that wasn't seasoned well). Mushroom sauce over chicken is not your typical mushroom sauce. It's red and it's runny and not appetizing. Also, mushrooms have a very can-metal taste. I ordered this on the recommendation of the waiter. Big mistake. Only reason I'm giving them two stars instead of one is although service was SLOW and not attentive, waiter gave us the empanada for free (because he forgot to give it to us), and the waiter tried to be somewhat funny. Also their bread and chimicurri sauce is pretty good, but they are free anyways. Taking my overall experience, I wouldn't come back here. This pasta dish was only lukewarm at best. Small Argentinian Grill $27- 1/5 Portion size it was good but it was not that great tasting at all... I ate the Blood Sausage (1/5) first, I was expecting something with flavor... It was lacking any I've tried one Near the LIE and that was great. Then was the intestine (0/5), it was like chewing on gum and all you could taste was it's natural fats my wife gave up chewing and spit it out, I tried cutting it with a knife took a good 10 minutes. Came here for dinner tonight and really enjoyed it. Yelpers are not exaggerating when they say that the skirt steak is incredible and HUGE -- really huge! We shared the 1/2 grilled skirt steak with mashed potatoes as well as the avocado, watercress, and shrimp salad. The 1/2 grilled skirt steak was $15.50, yet it was more than enough to feed the two of us; I have a good portion waiting for me for dinner tomorrow night. :) Not only that, but it was cooked to perfection - perfectly medium rare, juicy, a little fatty, and with great meaty texture. The grilled taste was delicious. This place is definitely a really good value for not just the quality but the quantity of food that you get. Thank God this place is in Elmhurst and not in Manhattan, otherwise the prices would probably be 2x as much and I wouldn't be as happy. The watercress/avocado/shrimp salad also had lima beans, hearts of palm, and tomato chunks in it, and it was really good and quite a large order as well. The combination of the different ingredients was really pretty in terms of presentation, and the salad itself was dressed perfectly. The only problem with it was that the shrimp was overcooked to the point that it was rubbery, but other than that, I really liked this salad and would get it again. We also shared a large pitcher of sangria, and it's perfect here! It's sweet and juicy, and the alcohol content wasn't watered down at all. The service here is pretty nice, and they don't rush you to pay your check and leave the way a lot of places do, and they actually wait until you request the check to give it to you. The ambiance here is pretty festive - it's dimly but warmly lit with lots of photographs that make the place feel homey yet intimate. It's not pretentious at all, but it's not too casual at the same time. I think it's a perfect restaurant to pick for a small party or gathering since the food and ambiance are good, and you wouldn't need to break the bank. We'll definitely be back here for the steaks.
