I have been visiting Black Mountain for years but haven't tried this interesting restaurant yet. Today was the day for me/us and marked the day the train returned on its route through Black Mountain. We were impressed by the interest and fanfare this post-Helene event created for the locals. Parking on the street, across the street or a short way up the street is town free parking. Shannon and Rain were our friendly and helpful servers. There are many seating options. We chose the sun room which was comfortable. Others were seated outside on the side porch and several people were inside. We shared a bowl of the delicious French onion soup. Eat it while it's hot for the best experience. The buckwheat crepes were the perfect consistency to handle the savory entrees. My Market crepe was packed full of goodies including the sausage add-on. Each ingredient stood well on its own. The pesto was a standout. My partner got the mushroom crepe with chicken. She enjoyed immensely. Both entrees came with a fresh greens and balsamic dressing. The servings were generous enough to bring two halves home for dinner. Sharing soup and a savory crepe is a reasonable strategy if leaving leftovers in your vehicle during the summer heat is a concern. The wait staff was not very welcoming. My empanada was very good. My dining partners were disappointed in the crapes , had we looked first on website we would have not ordered them. It did not meet our expectations but the way we were greeted it went down hill quickly. read more

I came with my family and thankfully they had enough space to seat the 7 of us. The space is smaller, but they graciously combined tables together in the back room to accommodate our party. I ordered the La Paysanne crepe, which had eggs, Swiss cheese, turkey bacon, leeks, tomatoes, and cream. It was delicious! The crepe itself had a nice crispy exterior but was soft to the bite. The filling was very complementary, and I think all the ingredients went really well together. I was skeptical of the turkey bacon, but it was actually good. The size of the crepe was also very generous and I was very full afterwards. The dish came with a side salad which was a nice addition. Our service was very friendly, helpful, and accommodating, and the food came out in a fairly prompt fashion, given the size of our group. The space was small and quaint but clean. Overall, I enjoyed this place and would recommend trying their crepes. I can't speak for the tamales or empanadas, but the crepe I had was delicious! read more

Picked this quant place for the crepes. Incredible!! Quaint. The French onion soup is worth the stop alone. It's like being in a little French chalet bistro. They had heaters on the enclosed back porch room for us. We got toasty! It started snowing outside which made it even more romantic! The Nutella crepe at the end was perfect. They use traditional French whole grain batter -- I didn't know that was a thing! My chicken crepe could've used a little more flavor -- but I'm not a Parisienne expert. I will 100% return. I didn't like being told they were closed. We did feel rushed. They had JUST closed. But it had started to snow. I'll know if this is a problem when I return. (Note the hours -- they close early.) I also wish my bill was about $5 cheaper. But food really is pricey right now. read more

Sort of an odd experience. The first thing we noticed was that the place was almost empty on a Saturday night at 6:30 pm. Same thing when we were there on an earlier Wednesday. One other couple I think. The person serving us was very nice. My wife's beer glass had a lemon seed stuck to the inside. We ordered two french onion soups, two pork tamales (which comes with a "side salad") and an additional side salad. We thought they might bring out the soups and salad first. No, everything came out at once, very fast -- pork tamales, extra side salad and french onion soup. We asked if we could have the soup first and they suggested they could keep the tamales in a warmer. The french onion soup was so-so, very heavy on what seemed to us to be a low quality of cheese and bread with a little broth. Heavy thyme taste. As several other reviewers have noted the tamales were dry and bland, similar to the crepe we had a week earlier. The tamales came with a tiny bit of sauce and we asked for, and were given, more. The menu says that this comes with a "side salad". No, it comes with a few pieces of lettuce. The environment is very pleasant, casual, friendly, in a rustic little yellow house. read more

What a perfect brunch!! Stopped in fo4 brunch with my college friends. It took us forever to order because everything sounded so delicious. We each ordered something different. Everything we ordered was so scrumptious. I had the beef stroganoff crepe...amazing! We also ordered dessert crepes which were also so yummy. The waitstaff was kind and very efficient. Came across this restaurant when searching for unique dinner spots in the Asheville area. It's a very small house turned restaurant and serves crepes, empanadas and tamales. The staff was very sweet as only two ladies were serving people. We were the first ones in the restaurant but it picked up pretty quickly and could tell there were some regulars who came often as they knew the staff. We skipped appetizers and went straight to our entrees. I went with the La Normandie crepe which was filled with caramelized onions, leeks, brie, Swiss and cream. I also had one pork tamale because I can't resist a good tamale. It was delicious and plenty of a helping. My two friends had the empanadas and said they were nice and crispy. The meals were served with a dressed salad that had the best balsamic dressing! We couldn't leave a crepe restaurant without having a dessert crepe. We went with a nutella and seasonal fruit crepe. It was so sweet and the perfect way to end dinner. Overall it was a very cute restaurant with character and the food was satisfying. The happy coincidence of marriage between an Italian and a Frenchman, has led, more or less indirectly, to the genesis of this humble little bistro. This is a good restaurant in a nice town which is, sorry to say, better than Boone, and like Asheville was before it was discovered. This is French. We ate genuine French onion soup (wow, was good) followed by crepes, or gullets as was pointed out to me, tomales and the deserts looked fabulous, but we had too much to eat. Amazing little place. We go every year when up on vacation. Easy to get a table in advance and always good service. We typically have a group of 8 which isn't aways easy to book. So many good things on the menu. The tamales are probably their weakest item, or maybe we just aren't big tamale fans. They weren't bad but not as good as other items. Everything else was amazing. The tomato empanadas are so good. But save room, the best part of any meal there are the crepes. We always order 6 or so for our group of 8 and just share. There really are no bad choice. Group favorites include the plain sugar, and the one with rum and caramel. The light ones with fruit and cream are amazing too. The nutella and banana is good but super rich. I stopped out of convenience, noting that this place was just before a bend in the road with apparent roadwork and a massive traffic pile-up. They have mostly outdoor seating, which is an advantage in the coronavirus era and allows them to take advantage of the mountain air. The big problem with them was capacity. I had to wait twenty minutes for a table despite no great crowd of people being there, and once I sat down, it was easily an hour to get and eat my lunch. If you're hanging out with friends, these things don't matter, but for those of us with travel on our minds, it wasn't ideal. I noted more than one other party turn away due to the wait, and the people who were sitting there remarked on it as well. They had only one overworked waitress who didn't let me know about what later sounded like some appealing specials. It seems to me like they ought to be hiring. The food that emerged, however, was just what I'd hoped; having researched their vegetarian and vegan friendly Argentinian mix of tamales, empanadas, and crepes. My vegetarian tamales were wrapped in corn husks neatly tied in bows, and the fillings were richly flavored with or without the sauce on the side. For anyone wondering if mushrooms are as satisfying as the dairy option, they were. Since crepes seem to be their thing, I tried a dessert crepe; I was told they were working on whipping up new batter (having turned away previous diners' request for a sweet crepe), but I got mine, and it tasted fresh. When I see the phrase "seasonal fruit" on the menu, I've come to expect disappointment, but theirs in this fall season turned out to be strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries, which when combined with dulce de leche made for a dynamic flavor profile. I was very satisfied, and the tab was reasonable. Although I do wish things had moved a bit faster, the food was worth the wait. read more

The empanadas are the best ones I have had here in the states since my last trip down In Argentina. Light pastry and the perfect blend of beef, onions, olives and hard boiled egg. Adorable little cafe in adorable little Black Mountain! The food we tried -- meat/cheese board, spinach and beef empanadas and chicken and pork tamales -- was all delicious! Service was off, so not a total 5-star experience though. They were incredibly understaffed for a Saturday afternoon. There was just 1 waitress and 1 cook working the entire restaurant. So, while the waitress was super friendly, she was spread too thin, and just couldn't keep up. We had a lot of really long stretches where we wouldn't see her. Lunch took about 2-hours from beginning to end. Luckily, the food was so good, it all but made up for the spotty service. The beef empanadas and pork tamale were my faves! read more

Of the MANY Sunday Brunch spots over the past few years, this place is the only one we have been back to at least 4 times! I crave their French onion soup ....it is absolutely delicious! Fantastic food in a converted & expanded house, across the street from the Black Mountain Post Office. Wife & I stopped for a early dinner. The Soup du Jour was sausage lentil - very tasty. I then had a Pollo Empanada, and a Carne Empanada. Wife had Pollo, followed by a Tomate Empanada. All were wonderful and filling. I will keep visiting every time I pass their way. read more

I'm glad I made that decision because these are some of the best bites of the trip so far. I would highly recommend the tomate and carne de vaca. So much flavor, the perfect texture for the pastry. As I waited on my to go order, the staff was incredibly friendly and the ambience was so cozy and calming. I eavesdropped on a conversation between a woman and her mother, talking about what the daughter could or couldn't have to eat because of a "special life changing test" she had upcoming.
