I love the decor, but I especially adore the detailed hand-painted depictions on the wooden booths. Not sure if I liked that or the $5 margaritas more! A group of gal pals and I met at La Mesa for some grub and drinks. We walked out refreshed by margaritas and stuffed with chips. We ordered the nachos and gabbed the night away until we went into tortilla chip coma. The service was attentive, and considering we were pretty close to shutting the place down, all staff was accommodating, kind and didn't rush us out. Every location I've been to of La Mesa's has been the same. Same atmosphere, super nice staff, TERRIBLE food. Not only will you not care for the food you'll get, you'll also hate the price! This is one of our go to restaurants that's close to our house. The service is usually quick, and the food is pretty tasty. Sometimes we stop in just for drinks and dip, but the main thing we used to go for is their mixed fajitas. They have a huge selection of tequila if you're a margarita fan. I personally think you can't go wrong with ordering their guacamole, their house salsa, and their cheese dip. Also, like the fact that they have a reward system. We had an okay time at this location, I think in general it was our fault because given the choice, we picked a booth that was out of sight for our server making it easy to forget us. The kids got burgers and fries, which I love because I enjoy their crispy fries. We tried the ceviche, and I also got the jalapeno margarita, both we're so fresh and tasty. As usual I over did it eating their chips and salsa that I only could eat a little of the steak fajitas, but it made for a delicious breakfast the next day. La mesa never lets me down. We start with the queso which is absolutely amazing. It pairs nicely with the complementary chips and salsa you are given. I ordered chicken and beef nachos for my main meal which is wonderful. We also ordered chicken enchiladas which hit the spot. The pomegranate margarita was delicious and not too sweet and really made the meal. Our server was attentive and very helpful. We received refills on chips and drinks in a timely matter. I've been going to La Mesa for the past 3 years, ever since I moved here. I love the ambience and their margaritas. I've always ordered El Grande Margarita, a 45 ounce glass on the rocks. It's a better deal than ordering 2 of the smaller glasses. The last couple of times I've gone the margaritas have been mostly ice. This last visit was the worst yet. I have no idea why this place received lower ratings, but I eat at a lot of Mexican restaurants and this by far is one of the best I have ever ate at. The service is excellent and the food was outstanding. Not to mention the drinks are top shelf premium and only $8.00, outstanding margaritas. I had the Molcajeta, shrimp, chicken, chorizo and steak and spicy. This is the best dish ever. My hostess was super and so was everyone else. La Mesa has always been a-ok for me. We've patronized this spot for a LONG time as my parents live practically across the street. Most recently, we opted for some take out. (The way to eat out during this global pandemic.) Ordering online was a breeze. Pickup was a breeze. Packaging was good. And everything in the order was correct. The street tacos are packed with filling and better than expected. And you can never go wrong with queso. But what left George C. raving and raving and raving was the torta he had. We stopped here on Labor Day, the restaurant was short staffed but the owner was there working hard and the staff that was there really hustled. Everything we ordered came out pretty quick considering the staff issue. The food is authentic Mexican fare, fresh and served hot. Delicious homemade salsa. I ordered the Carne Asada Plate. The servings were generous, the meat was cooked perfectly, and had tons of flavor. I was able to eat and pay within 30 minutes. Such expedient kitchen staff and Ruben, my server, shared with me his excitement for other dishes to try out in the future. I'd eat there again for sure. Not the best Mexican food I've ever had, though it's hard to go off of just one dish, but it is likely among the top in the Midwest. Atmosphere was fun, and finding parking is likely to NEVER be a problem. Rating 5 stars for now because of the awesome staff. Everything but the waiter was terrible! I swear they don't know what spices are!!!! Bland/unseasoned refried beans & rice, the chicken was COMPLETELY dried out (also unseasoned and most likely just BOILED) and ate like beef jerky, and the ground beef taco tasted the way canned cat food smells! Today I visited La Mesa in papillion and had a great experience! The newly renovated art made it a very pleasing environment and the food was just as good. I got the chicken and steak fajitas and they came with rice, beans, and tortillas as well. There was also side condiments that made the tacos that much better. I don't know why it's takes us this long to try this place as we moved to the area over a year ago, but I'm glad we finally stopped here for dinner. This is one of the best Mexican restaurants in the area, and I am probably the pickiest when it comes to Mexican food being from Texas where it's a staple and very hard to find here in the Midwest. We went on a very busy Friday night and were told 20-25 minutes wait time. We were sat in less than 15, so they were moving very quickly! Once sat, we had chips and salsa right away. Our server was very enthusiastic. The food was very delicious. I tried the enchiladas suizas and my boyfriend tried the burrito gigante. We also tried the cheese dip. While I preferred more peppers and spice to my queso, the dip was still tasty and I found myself eating more of it than I expected before the food arrived. The enchiladas I had were the perfect level of spice and the chicken inside was generous. My boyfriend enjoyed his burrito as well. Not my fav, but don't completely hate it either. Lots of chips to fill you up before your meal actually arrives. A couple of tips. Ask for the green salsa (it's better than the red salsa). Get the queso dip (I love ALL forms of cheese, so I'm biased - I heart cheese THAT much). The service is always friendly. The decor is really cute (although chairs are more cute than comfortable). If you're looking for authentic Mexican, avoid at all costs. However, if you have folks in your group who like giant portions of Americanized Mexican between $7-12, need a place that can accommodate large groups and are looking for something in the heart of Papillion, La Mesa is a decent choice. I'd like to give it one star (for food), but I'm giving them the second star for occupying a bay in Tara Plaza and bringing some business to the community. The queso dip is to die for, and the Enchiladas Acapulco are fantastic, even if the crab-meat is faker than a Wall Street banker's smile. The tequila selection is robust and some of the servers actually know what they're talking about when they recommend on in particular to you. Margaritas can be had for anywhere from 3 or 4 bucks to over 10, depending on your tastes, and they offer the standard Mexican beer selection as well. All of this aside, though, this place just oozes "fake" vibes. Compared to the authentic Mexican food I had in Arizona, or even here in town, for that matter, this place is probably only two stars, but compared to the Americanized, suburbanized Mexican fare you'd find other places, La Mesa is a solid choice. P.S. Do NOT, under any circumstances, get the sopapillas. They're flat and flavorless. read more
