When I try something local- I like to try it more than once if it's not good-especially since word of mouth is that La Palma is the best Taco spot in Conroe. Well well well-I'm drawn between 1 star and 3 star. So I'm landing on 2 stars. Maybe a few years ago-this was the place to get your taco fix. And maybe it still is for some. I've had tacos from trucks, restaurants, home cooks, you name someone that claims to have great tacos-I'm there to see what it's about.... from Texas to New Mexico to Arizona up to Utah out in Louisiana and even in Mexico in Puerta Vallarta. The parking lot is what it is. Not too bad but I can see how some people feel on edge with people just walking around outside acting sketch. You walk in the door and the aroma of different styles of meat hit you. You order at the counter and get a number, really simple system. They even do it one better for everyone and have a bilingual menu. They have grilled onions coming out depending on how busy it is every 10-15 minutes. The salsa bar is amazing but there's no label or guide to really tell what's what without asking. Once again I'm adventurous so I grab a container of each. The place is dirty-and while some people say, "hole in the wall places have the best food", that doesn't mean leave old food, sauce residue on the tables and chairs. My food each time was to go thank goodness but I literally had to find the "least dirty table to sit at and wait. Just makes you wonder, if the front looks like this-what's really going on in the kitchen. The food was okay. Nothing epic to shout to the heavens about. The Pastor was dry, as was the chicken. The lengua wasn't seasoned properly. Beef and Barbacoa were prepared nicely. Like someone said before in a different review, if you want frills and sides-this isn't for you. This is just tacos. Keeping that in mind, if you only do tacos, they better be the best Taco every time. Like I said I visited different times but I got a pretty consistent quality of food. Maybe this place is the best place to get a "real" taco after 10pm but I wouldn't go out if your way to try this place. I've heard about this place alot from a friend he'd always be raving about how amazing it is like for years he'd always talk about it, so today my husband and I decided to stop in and give it a try, I mean how can you go wrong??? We got beef fajita tacos and an el pastor taco cuz I wanted to try it, they were just tacos nothing special about them. The fajita didn't have much flavor to them, they advertised grilled onions but said they didn't have any, yet they had raw onions. It's not hard to throw some onions on the grill...I'm just saying. The spiciest salsa they had wasn't spicy at all however it was homemade and had a good flavor. Now on to this pastor taco I wish I wouldn't have bought, the meat was dry,burnt and super fatty. I guess they don't make proper pastor and just try to recreate it. Most places it's very flavorful and juicy but not here, twas disappointing. We won't be back! We wanted a good breakfast and what we got was a pathetic looking Chorizo and eggs. The Chorizo and eggs looked like they were from another half eaten breakfast plate of another customer! The Chilaquillas were extremely dry and the eggs had burnt ends. Best Authentic Taqueria I have found in Montgomery County. Located in a sketchy area on the east side of Conroe right off Frasier. There use to be a crack house years ago next to a glass store which I purchased custom made glass table tops from which went out of business across on Frasier. I think the crack house blew up or was leveled. Anyway if you visit just be aware of your immediate surroundings. Btw there are 2 La Palma's in Conroe. This is the taqueria one. My first visit I was not safe to exit my vehicle which seemed to be a flukey experience. The second visit was safe and I proceeded into this old run down building. I ordered 2 pastor tacos and I fajita taco on corn tortillas. They came with cilantro and onions. The pastor tacos were solid 5 star authentic Mexican at it's best. The pastor tacos even had bark on them from being cooked. Such yummy goodness, best pastor I've ever had!!! I got a lengua taco by accident instead of a fajita taco. The lengua was so well cooked though it didn't resemble the normal "cubed" looking lengua. Actually it was delicious for lengua and I would order it again but I really wished I had gotten the fajita taco I had ordered. They have a condiment bar with a huge bowl of sautéed onions which you must try. It's like a free treat. Load up on them if you like sautéed onions, you'll be glad you did. Also a variety of red and green salsas are available. Hygiene is lacking! Tables are dirty but just roll out the paper towel roll like a big placemat and enjoy. Bathroom is outside. These are real-deal, to-die-for, Mexican tacos! The menu is small, offering 6 meats (pastor, lengua, barbacoa, fajita, chicken, and chicharon), served on corn tortillas topped with cilantro, onions, and salsa, at $2/taco. We tried them all and my favorites are a 3 way tie: pastor, barbacoa, and fajita. They were all quite tasty, the chicharon probably my least favorite because it was a bit chewy, but if you like chicharon, you'd probably love it! They have a great salsa bar, with dried chile salsas, and a comal of deliciously greasy warm, sautéed onions. This place is a must go! Well Yelp will not let me edit my star rating so please read this. This is in a very suspect part of town and I would not stop here at dark. The food is ok but not worth stopping here for - had a brisket taco and a pork taco. Brisket was better than pork but that is not saying much. It was clean and bathroom smelled of fresh pine sol but that building has to be 100 years old. Drove all the way from Richmond to Conroe to try out La Palma and was disappointed! One of the best taco places I've ever had with a simple menu which makes its so much easier to decide on what to order. None of the TexMex fusion mumbo jumbo going on at La Palma. I settled on 7 tacos with the help from Jason at the counter. Barbacoa Pastor Lengua Fajita Chicharorones Cactus* Pork leg* *Off menu items Loved them all and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the lengua and cactus tacos. My favorite was between pastor and barbacoa. All tacos were simple and dressed with salsa, raw onions and cilantro. Of course you can ask for the toppings on the side and load up on the free grilled onions which were killer. The place is located in the older part of Conroe but not too far off I-45 making a worth while stop if you're looking for some fresh made to order simple as can be tacos. Let's be super clear here folks... This is a taco joint. A divey, old, hole in the wall. They serve TACOS and only tacos. Don't go in looking for a full menu that includes beans and rice... just tacos all the time. However, the tacos will not disappoint! We have had chicken, pastor, beef and barbacoa on several occasions. The consistency of flavor is always the same. It's always nice to know exactly what you are getting every time you go in. The corn tortillas.... just corn tortillas, but they seem to sprinkle some magic on them! Hit the salsa and onion bar for some tasty accompaniments! We came here at around 9pm craving tacos late at night and were happy to see this place closed at midnight. We were pleasantly surprised with the flavor of the tacos, probably my most favorite taco place in Conroe that we have tried so far. The pastor had a lot of flavor. I wasn't too much a fan of the tortillas though. They were a bit hard, seems like they were fried. The tortillas were also very thick, they used 2, and it was very filling. Their portions are generous. I ordered 4, but would probably only get 2 next time because they were big. We ordered 14 tacos and total was just under $35. My cons were the tortillas and the location/cleanliness and ambiance of the place. read more

If I could give this place a 0 star rating I would. I got 10 tacos, 5 were lengua, 1 was tinga, and the other 4 were of fajita. The tacos were absolutely bland. They had no flavor at all! I really wanted to give this place 5 stars... but the self-serve bar and cleanliness of the tables and restaurant cannot go unnoticed. The food offerings, cooking, service; easily 5 stars. If you think you've had a taco, think again. This place is one of the most authentic Mexican street tacos (minus the really small size) that I've been able to find this side of 1960 and 45. It can get pricey if you are ordering for a lot of people, but it's definitely worth it. Tacos are stuffed with a lot of meat (one thing they do not skimp on) so 2 tacos will probably be enough... although you will want to try one of everything! I bought 4, thinking it would be just enough... I was done with 2. Loved the idea of the self-serve toppings bar, but the kids that were there took over the entire bar, only leaving small amounts of everything there... Area around the bar was unkempt, even before the kids depleted the lime and salsa inventory. Table was cleaned off with a dirty rag... They lightly fry their tortillas to give the taco a slight crisp and to avoid tearing when eating them. I had a beef fajita and barbacoa taco which were great. Amazing. I was super hungry, and i got one barbacoa and one chicken on flour. My wife and daughter got beef fajita on corn tortillas. They were all delicious. I was ravenous, so i didn't even take a picture, but I'd say that it was all finished in about 5 minutes. Great taco joint. read more

Before the invention of a GPS, I'd reckon only Christopher Columbus could find this place. Tucked off a remote side street in the Conroe area is a true diamond in the rough. Upon first pulling up, with the iron bar windows & doors I was quite nervous. After entering the front door and looking at the main menu in Spanish and noting the clientele were all fluent Spanish speakers, I knew if I could get my order right I could be in for quite the treat. I ordered two chicken and two beef fajita tacos. Man were they good! They come with the standard double layer corn tortilla w/ cilantro & onions. The salsa bar was good, but was a bit unkept and low on some of the sides. I'm afraid to see what their sanitation grade is, but I definitely disregarded it in a place like this. Whatever price you see on the board, that is what you pay. Tax is already included. They also take credit cards w/ a $6 minimum purchase. If you can get past the seedy surrounds, you will find yourself in a 1,000 square foot oasis of an authentic Mexican taqueria. What an experience! read more

Best tacos north of beltway 8! Located in a divey joint off Frazier (don't confuse it with their 105 location), this place is the real deal! Excellent tacos, esp pastor. Also many other great choices like beef tongue, nopalitos, barbacoa, chicken, chicharrones. The sauce bar is awesome. The salsa verde is spicy and flavorful, an absolute must here! Also the grilled onions are absolutely essential for your tacos. Good enough to eat alone. Corn tortillas are standard and default. But try the flour tortilla, really excellent. I have grown tired of Tex-Mex food that I have eaten since birth growing up in the Lone Star State. Recently I have moved on to good taquerias and La Palma has made its way to the top of my list. This place came highely recomended by a friend of mine who first ate there. I also teach lots of hispanic students in the Conroe area and when I survey them La Palma always gets the most votes. I have been twice and both times really enjoyed the tacos. They are cash only so keep that in mind. La Palma offers a variety of tacos from beef fajita, lingua, barbacoa, chicharon, and Pastor. I usually get a couple tacos, which is equivalent to four because they come with two tortillas and enough food to make four. I also get a Mexican coke in the glass bottle. If you live the area and haven't tried La Palma give them a try and you won't be sorry. read more

This place is tacos ONLY, not a Mexican restaurant. No gorditas, tortas, etc. so just know that ahead of time. I called and placed an order about 11pm Friday since nothing else was open. I asked for 6 fajita tacos with avacado and cheese. The first thing they told me was they dont have cheese! Ok fine, no big deal, I can put my own cheese. I go and pick them up and instead of putting avacado in, they give me a whole avacado. The price was decent enough, but the tacos were average at best. I have been on a taco kick lately, which is a little harder on my fitness regiment than when I was on a pho kick. This is now my favorite taqueria in the surrounding area.
