Rarely do you find new styles of Mexican restaurants in the towns around here--but this is it! Patilla seems to specialize in barbacoa and with good reason. It is juicy, greasy goodness. The sons chimichanga was good, but I would not do that. The best thing we got was a torta ahumada, with crisp bread, delicate chicken, a just spicy enough yellow sauce on the whole thing, and onions on top to complement. Get that to share because, oh boy, it's a doozy! This place can be and should be enjoyed over and over! read more

The food was really good and the service extremely friendly. We spent a night in Atascadero on the way up Hwy 101 and so glad we ate here. My wife got a bowl with tilapia and I got a quesadilla filled with BBQ beef. The salsas were good as well as the chili/carrot/vegetable mixture. Coming from the Bay Area, I didn't expect too much from this random Mexican restaurant in this small city. But whoa was I wrong! And I am so glad I was! You absolutely NEED to get their al pastor tacos. Regardless of anything else you order, you need to try this. The meat is extremely flavorful, a little crispy, and also very tender. I also got a lengua taco which was so soft but I prefer their al pastor. Their salsa bar has everything you could ever need for your food whether you like spicy food or not. We also ordered their birria soup which is only served on weekend and it was a compliment to our tacos (even though it was far too much food). It was beefy, savory, and comforting. Service was also outstanding... even the man who gave us our food took the time to talk to us. We ordered pollo nachos (but got carne), chimichanga burrito with carne asada, chicken fajitas and Parrilla bowl with Barbacoa. The burrito was very hearty (deep fried) and came with a heaping serving of pico, sour cream and guacamole. It was crunchy & the cheese and beans combo was pretty scrumptious. The fajitas were really good- the Mexican rice had a tomato sauce that made it super tasty. The grilled chicken was packed with lots of flavor & the beans were just perfect with melted cheese. The Parrilla bowl was filled with fresh vegetables. Average price of a meal about $20 read more

Wherever Atascadero is it's a good thing I don't live there. I'd be 300 pounds and have my name etched onto a seat at La Parrilla. Look, get me near a place with (unlimited) fresh chips and a clean, well-stocked, fresh salsa bar where each version is more tasty than the previous one sampled and I'm a happy camper. Show me a menu with so much on offer that I have a hard time deciding and my thrill level is notched up a bit. Provide the above with a welcome smile then serve me delicious Mexican food? Yep, this is the stuff that sparks joy; Marie Kondo would approve. One of us had a girthy shrimp burrito ($10.95) that was consumed from head to tail. The other one of us (that'd be me) had a La Parrilla Bowl ($8.95) in which the protein was shrimp. Though one could select a different protein I opted for the shrimp the only downside of which was my inability to sample my Mexican food litmus test, carne asada. La Parrilla (an "order at the counter" place) is serving mighty good food. I might just have to figure out exactly where Atascadero is to make a return visit. read more

La Parilla has continued to be a favorite spot! And obviously not just for me, because they often have a line out the door at peak hours. I've tried half the menu at this point, but my husband is steadfast in his item of choice: The breakfast burrito here is RIDICULOUSLY, absurdly good. He orders it with carnitas, and it just melts in your mouth. I've found that anything with the carnitas, al pastor, or pollo asado is my jam. My only wish is that there were lighter/less carb-heavy options on the menu, as even the salad comes with rice & beans on it. I once asked for no rice, and it arrived instead with a truly astonishing amount of cheese. You might notice that this is still a 5-star review. Why? Because it was DELICIOUS. First time to stop here and it was interesting. I was trying to decide what to order and someone came in that had called in an order it wasn't ready and this person was upset. I was impressed by the way the staff handled the situation. As for me. Service was good. It's a walk up, order, and sit down restaurant. I was the only one there at the time. I received my food in a timely manner and all service persons I encountered were great. It was clean and comfortable. My food was great. I ordered the Cameron al la diabla. Beans and rice was good the shrimp was cooked perfectly and not to spicy. Fair price for the food I had the pleasure to enjoy. I will try again. Sorry to the lady who was so upset. read more

Used to travel to slo for their torta ahogada and salsas. My torta nadar wasn't spicy, and was disappointing to say the least. The consommé was spilling all over in my to go bag so I couldn't even leave the restaurant. I don't know when they changed the recipe but it definitely wasn't salsa. It was so oily and water it was literally splashing all over their dining table and my clothes just trying to take a bite. The bread was as super soft from the watery consommé and made it hard to find meat that fell out of the torta since they included so much of it. Was stoked when they opened this restaurant in Atascadero but I won't be back unless they change the recipe to the original one. Let me start off by saying I'm a harsh critic and rarely give restaurants a 5-star but this place far exceeded my expectations. Upon arrival, this place looks modern with an urban vibe....very clean and well kept. The workers were friendly and welcomed us as soon as we walked in. The cashier was patient with us as it was our first time here. I ended up ordering 4 tacos with different meats: asada, carnitas, pastor, and lengua (beef tongue). To my surprise, every single meat was delicious in its own way and you could tell they were all cooked differently. The asada meat had a nice crunch and crips to it whole still remaining tender and it was really flavorful (my favorite meat). The pastor was similar in texture to the asada but a little chewier (not my favorite). The carnitas was absolutely delicious!!! Super super tender and soft (probably my second favorite). And then there was the beef tongue. I was pretty nervous about this one but once I bit into that taco, I knew it was cooked correctly. It was super tender and soft. It was not chewy or gamey at all. The best lengua I've tried!!! Their salsas were pretty good. Out of the 6 or so that they made, my favorite was two of them: 1) classic red sauce and 2) a green sauce (not the Usual verde sauce) - I have no idea what they put in there but it had a lemony-spicy flavor to it that went great with all the taco meats! There was also pickled jalapeños and chips for free!! They were all set up on a table. Overall, I was very satisfied with this place and will definitely be coming back when I pass through this town. I have been going to La Parilla fairly regularly over the last 1-1.5 years. It is close to where I work, moderately priced, fast, and, in my opinion, has one of the best Chile Verde burritos in North County (there are many places I have not tried). I love Chile Verde. It's the only thing I order at Mexican restaurants. I even make it myself. I am writing this review because today's burrito was the best I've had. I am sad it is gone. The recipe was great, burrito wrap held tight, and the ratio between verde, rice, beans, and pico was perfect. Very underrated how important that ratio is. It felt like I was eating at home how amazing their customer service is. The food here is delicious. I don't really like carne asada but my son didn't eat his taco so I ate it. And I have to say their carne asada is an item you must try. The sope is super big I got full with one. I should've order a smaller plate; couldn't finish my food. Oh my mind can't forget the fresh water they have. I love how it wasn't fake horchata. I won't like I had about 2 cups of it. Thanks to my dad for introducing me to this spot. Thriving during this pandemic because of reputation. I have heard from so many people about the great food here, so I finally decided to get there This is counter service and they have a very extensive menu and when I asked what one of the best sellers were they said the tostada ceviche. So I ordered one of those along with a Carne Asada taco, rice and beans. All the food came out pretty quickly. It was a nice presentation. The taco had an amazing combination of toppings and veggies on it that were just delightful. She was right about the ceviche tostada it was fresh tasty lots of citrus and three ample avocado slices on top. I was very happy to get an outside table because there's only three available. I took my daughter there for lunch and she definitely will be back as she works in Atascadero. The customer service is awesome also which is a huge plus for me. This review is long overdue as I have lived in Atascadero for almost two years now and have gone to La Parilla dozens of times. Food- I rate Mexican restaurants by their burritos and their carne asada because both can go very wrong very easily. LP knows how to wrap a great burrito. It's an art and some places can do it and some can't. You can tell when places cut corners on carne asada, LP has high quality beef and is never fatty in my experience. I prefer shrimp burritos and theirs is killer. It's the closest burrito in this area to burritos I grew up with in Santa Cruz. Value- The price is fair and typical for high quality Mexican. Worth every penny. Environment- It's a no frills Taqueria, but it's very clean and well managed. Great if you want high quality food with an easy counter order and sit down experience in one. Service- Everyone who works here is extremely kind and attentive. Especially during the week my order is made extremely fast. They do orders on Google Storefront, which I love. AND for to-go orders they always pack you chips and salsa FOR YOU. It's details like this that make me come back again and again. Thanks La Parilla! read more

Giving a 4/5 because of this reason: my burrito's cheese and rice, was on one side of the burrito, and the meat, avacado, and sour cream were on the other side. Not a fan of this, don't think anybody is. I mean, cmon. The meat in the burrito was good, nice big chunks of Asada. The burrito was super fire, expect for the cheese and rice side. $23.60 for two super burritos. The green salsa was good, nice and sour from the lemon. The red salsa wasn't spicy. I rarely write bad reviews but my experience was so bad I just need to warn people. I tried this place a couple days ago, during the Corona Stay at Home saga. I am a big supporter of local restaurants during this time and many people mentioned how great this place was. My first impression was the filthy door... I was surprised to see how dirty the door and the dining room looked... that should have been my first warning. The chip and salsa bar was still available but there were no gloves or paper towels available to use with the tongs. When I asked for a paper towel the cashier asked me "why?".... really! ‍ She was totally clueless and seemed unconcerned. I should have left right then but I took my food and went home. Long story short, both my husband and I were sick with tummy troubles that night. During this time, restaurants should be even more diligent with cleaning and food prep but not here. I hate to write this review. I really wanted this to be good, but our experience was so BAD it was laughable. I have been with my husband for 11 years, and this was THE WORST meal, by far, that we have ever had in a restaurant. My husband and I visited Father's Day, looking for a nice date night. We expected our usual haunts would be crowded, so we decided to try a new spot. We went in, and were immediately greeted by a super friendly young man. This was the only good part of the meal. The service was excellent, and our food was served up promptly. Now the meal...ugh. We were hoping for a sit down experience, but this was a grubby order and pay at the counter place. That wasn't bad, but the food was delivered to our (dirty) outside table on plastic plates with plastic cutlery. Again, not what we expected, but some of the best Mexican places I have eaten at have been dirty hole-in-the wall spots, so I tried to withhold negative judgement. One bite and YUCK!!! The tortilla chips tasted like little hockey pucks, and the salsa was watery. My cheese enchiladas weren't cooked through, the guacamole on my salad was both watery and slimy, the rice tasted like it had been made the day before, and the beans, dear G-d, were both flavorless and foul. My meal was so bad it was inedible. My husband's super burrito was equally unappealing. The meat was dry and stringy, and my husband described his beans as tasting like poop (though he used a word that started with the letter "s.") We though that our drinks would wash away the wretched flavors, but not really. While my husband's sofa was ok, my Corona beer was warm and stale tasting. How can you ruin a sealed Corona? I don't know! The only part of the dinner that was halfway decent was the cheese quesadilla. (Who, after all, can ruin flour tortillas and cheese?) It had a good flavor, but it wasn't cut in the kitchen, so my husband and I had to tear into it with our hands, like a pair of starving wild dingoes. The puny plastic cutlery in the little baggies simply wasn't up to the task. We are not picky eaters, and this was the first time I have walked out of a restaurant hungry. The food was so bad that the flies buzzing i. the outdoor patio fled for their lives when the food arrived. We tried, we really did, but after eating less than half our meal, we gave up, scraped our plates into the trash, and left. Looking at other reviews, people seem to like the place, but for us the meal was so gross, so beyond redemption, and so B. A. D. bad, we didn't bother to complain, and went in search of ice cream to scrape the taste of stale tortilla chips off our tongues. I don't know, given that we are new in town, if we just were unlucky, or the wonderful, friendly, and delightful people of Atascadero have incredibly low standards when it comes to Mexican food. We won't be coming back for a second try, but based on reviews, it seems other people have had better experiences. For us $60 was an awful lot of cash for inedible chow. On the plus side, four hours later, we aren't showing signs of food poisoning. Thank goodness for small favors. Of course now I see that, as of this writing, the restaurant has had eight health violations... read more

Extensive menu does not disappoint! We stopped here for a quick dinner before continuing our drive from SF to LA. It's a great spot! The staff were amazing and helpful. The menu is so extensive, we did not know what to choose but ended up ordering a vegetarian quesadilla and a mixed meat burrito bowl which was served to us in under 5 minutes! Both were delicious! The endless supply of fresh chips and salsa too were nothing short of delicious! Will definitely stop back in when we drive through this way again.
