This place is great for lunch if you work in the medical district. It can get packed quickly at lunch, but they seem to turn tables over quickly. You get a generous portion of chips and salsa when you sit down - each person gets their own salsa bowl. The lunch specials are well-priced and more than filling. The waiters and waitresses are always extremely attentive and quick. They have happy hour specials as well on margaritas, domestic beers, and pina coladas in the afternoon. If I recall, I believe domestics are $2.50, and margaritas & pina coladas are $3 during happy hour. read more

Tuesday 8/8/17 We have eaten at this La Playa Maya location numerous times over many years but not on a regular basis. Hubby & I stopped for lunch on Tuesday. The premises & tables were neat & clean, service was prompt & friendly and there was plenty of chips & salsa...... everything great.... until it came to the food. For us, La Playa Maya has always been about the wonderful cheeses they use. We both ordered our favorite meal of a small bowl of queso, cheese enchiladas with queo rather than chili and rice & beans. The dip & the enchiladas were "just edible" because of the cheese. It was runny & was just short of being as "blah" as that cheese stuff out of a can, in fact it didn't have that much flavor. A terribly bad meal at a place we have enjoyed for years. But we will try it again soon to see if this is corrected. Hopefully this was just a bad day for queso. read more

A group of us from work went to La Playa Maya for lunch and I have to say the service here was superb! Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful....from the moment we entered the restaurant (from the take out door) the waitstaff quickly maneuvered us to a large table for four, took our drink orders, had chips & salsa on the table and was served the Combination Appetizer Plate (Fajita quesidalls, chicken flautitas & Fajita nachos served with Queso, fresh guacamole, sour cream and jalapeños) and an order of Mama's Guacamole (fresh avacados, tomatoes, red onion, cilantro, fresh lemon juice and seasonings) which is Prepared table-side in no time at all. Honestly, I could have stopped there ... but I ordered the Enchiladas de Pollo, which is Two sour cream chicken enchiladas, served with traditional refried beans and spanish rice. Around the table my lunch compadres choices for lunch were the Filete Empanizado (Breaded and deep fried white fish fillet, served with Tartar sauce, fries and small salad), the Tacos a la Mexicana (Grilled seasoned beef or chicken fajita, atop soft corn tortillas topped with melted cheese.) and the Cowgirl Chicken (Charbroiled chicken breast topped with Queso sauce and Monterrey Jack cheese, served with rice & Veggies). We all enjoyed our meals, the food was prepared well, plated nicely and there was an ample amount served on our lunch plates, but in my opinion the JEWELS in this restaurant is the friendly STAFF. I forgot how good the chips and sauce are here! They made guac tableside that was awesome since I LOVE fresh avocado! I had the brisket tacos that I have been craving for several weeks since I read about someone else having them somewhere. They were ok, maybe a little dry today, but still good. There was lots of oohs and ahhs at our table due to the huge chimis and burritos and the huge margaritas! Was told by one end of the table that it was one of the best ceviches she had ever had, and she has been a lot of places. Where's the flavor and seasoning in the food? I felt like I was eating food from a nursing home or something. It was very bland and flavorless. I ordered the cowgirl chicken with ranchero sauce and the waiter told me the sauce was a "sweet" sauce but it wasn't sweet at all. It looked like orange purée with over cooked onions. Over cooked meaning the onions were too soft and mushy. The rice was over cooked as well and mushy. The seasoned vegetables were too mushy. Everything was soggy and over cooked and not al dente. The chicken and sauce could've been more seasoned. There was no salt, garlic powder, or spice. The staff were friendly but the food wasn't to my liking at all. read more

A friend took me here for lunch today. Never heard of these restaurants before. Great salsa and chips immediately arrived. Drinks arrived thirty seconds later. Lunch arrived ten minutes after that. Had the # 4 on the lunch menu: A large flour tortilla filled with cheese and smothered with pico de Gallo and chicken fajitas(other choice was beef fajitas)accompanied by refried beans and spanish rice. Price was $8.95 or $9.95. Plates were large and filled to the brim. Service was excellent and rapid. Absolutely clean tables, floors, and flatware. A must try! Highly recommended! read more

I pass by La Playa Maya quite often. It always looked interesting, but it wasn't until my brother came to town that I took the occasion to go in. Now, when I pass it by, I can say, "Yeah. I went there once." Playa Maya was a fair deal but I won't feel overly compelled to return. It's sort of a halfway point between the chains like El Fenix or On the Border on one end and the more dive-y places down Hemphill. I ordered brisket flautas. The brisket would not have been great on its own but it was alright as a filler. I would prefer a greater capitalization on what can be done with that cut. The refried beans, however, were fantastic. Vibrant, if not approaching umami. The rice had peas and carrots, which amused me because it reminded me of the Czech-Mex of Prague. Also, my brother's wife let me try one of her chicken enchiladas (lie. she gave me the whole thing). I felt the same way about the chicken as I did the brisket and the cheese sauce was reminiscent of the cheese from Golden Corral mac-and-cheese. Overall, it was a so-so experience. The other locations have better reviews. So, I'd be willing to give them a shot and, although I wouldn't necessarily object if someone suggested I join them here, I would exact suggest it myself. read more

I have came to this location since the 90s. I had the absolutely worse service of my life here. Every other table around us had prompt service and got their food before us that came in after us. We were only table of four. Order appetizers and it came out with our entree. Asked for chip refill we never got, ask for water refills 3 times before we got it. Waitress took our credit cards to front and left them on the counter unattended. I finally got up and got them myself. That was the last straw. There were plenty of wait staff and restaurant was not full. Only thing we saw that was different is we didn't speak spanish. You have lost a decades long customer. read more

The cream sauce was really tired and uneventful. And, I did not have one shrimp inside the flour tortilla. The plate came out with vegetables and rice. My companion ordered the Mexican Shrimp Cocktail. It was good. Nice sized shrimp, not the chopped up ones, large avocados, onions, cilantro... we dashed it with some tabasco and voila! perfecto! We ordered a chicken quesadilla to go. My teenager did not eat the entire order. **What teenage boy doesn't devour tortillas, chicken, and cheese???** We did test the margaritas. He had frozen. I had rocks. They were okay. Not especially awesome. Tasted like they were from a mix. At $9.00, I wish I would have passed. The menu is extensive. There were so many seafood items. They cook to perfection and the it's the cutest little place you'll eat at when it comes to mexican food. Pricing is average and they give you more than enough food. Food was okay--not awesome, but fairly good. I ordered the Chile Relleno Texano, which came with brisket instead of cheese, and I had it with salsa verde instead of "queso sauce." A whole lot of brisket, and they laid the breaded and fried chili on top. Flavorful--probably not the best rendition of Chile Relleno around, but adequate. The spanish rice on the side was okay, and the scoop of guacamole was outstanding. The chips and salsa were very good also. My wife had the camarones (shrimp), which were on the small side but still good. The other couple had beef fajitas, along with their margaritas, which they were happy with. Wide variety of items from fajitas to lots of fish/shrimp options. One of my fallbacks several times a year for many years. Great ceviche starters with choice of fish,shrimp,octopus.... Slightly sweet with a good fresh and cilantro character, and a couple extra limes to squeeze. Many items with the usual rice and beans, some with white rice and vegetables. Chili Relleno regular cheese, or Tejano filled with brisket is very good. I've liked the seafood enchiladas fir many years. Fish items have variety, a really good chicken breast with grilled mushrooms and onions. Sauces as usual for item descriptions are well paired. Options of at least 4 different hot sauce bottles if desired for added heat punch. Note this Hemphill location is often busy, with tables most always available immediate, or soon. I've done takeout several times during Covid as well, quite good when at home or office. When using the group upper room, they coordinate servers to handle the large group at serving time with a person stationed for the regular glass filling, services, etc. Yes, personnel wearing masks as of October 2021 for confidence. I found that to be semi -rude. Then when the ticket was wrong because of company and casual waitress mistakes... he asked me to step out side so he could tell me 'I should never come back to this restaurant'. Our tab was 166.00. After 45 minutes, the waiter returned stating that the $600 check couldn't be split any further. The entire party had a $600 check and we were unable to prove that the people that left had already paid. We know that all in our group did pay, and we all left feeling scammed. The service was okay but what really irked me was the noticeable ploy to get me and my friends out of the restaurant once we had finished our meal.
