I love trying a new culinary experience that prompts me to learn something new about history and culture. La Señora Del Zacahuil gave me that gift this week and I couldn't believe she had no reviews on Yelp. Coming here to pull up her page and I see 16 glowing "currently not recommended" reviews. Let's see if we can fix that and get her some more visitors from the Yelp community. Firstly, know that this food is lovingly hand-prepared with highest quality ingredients and the price point reflects that. I gotta admit, I was shocked to learn that our meal for 3 from a freeway-adjacent food truck was $62 - gulp, come again!? That total included 2 entrees, 5 tacos, and 1 horchata. Inflation must be impacting this small business, as the prices we paid were $1-3 higher per item than the prices on the online menu or Yelp/Google/FB photos from 6 months ago. Notably, prices are not shown on the posted menus at the truck, so you really don't know about the sticker shock until you start to pay for the meal. If you aren't a fluent Spanish speaker, it may be a bit challenging to negotiate if you want to ask questions about changing your order to bring the total bill down. Now to the food. Everything we tried was delicious & beautifully garnished with fresh veggies & crunchy, colorful pickles (en escabeche). Salsas were offered in red and creamy green by squeeze bottle straight from the fridge. Be sure to return these when your meal is done. We ordered at the truck window then waited under the adjacent covered outdoor seating area for our order to be called. As we waited, the owner came out to serve us an amuse bouche of small cups of the thick, traditional spiced hot chocolate & corn masa drink (atole), champurrado. Yum! Given the name of the place, I simply had to order the zacahuil, a (supposedly) gigantic tamale cooked in banana leaves in the Huasteca style of San Luis Potosi, only offered on Saturdays at this truck. If you get this in Mexico, it may be a meter or more in length, intended to serve 10+ people! My expectations were high from the truck's photos and the $16 price tag, but I'd say it was just... alright. The food portion was comparable to 2 small Tex-Mex tamales in corn husks and the pork meat filling was sparse compared to photos. While the flavors were very tasty, I'd likely not order this again due to the food-to-dollar margin. Tacos we tried were tasty but also very pricey. Cochinita pibil, chicken tinga, barbacoa, all on doubled corn tortillas, plus bean & cheese on flour, and potato, egg, & cheese on flour. The cheese appeared to be queso fresco, so it added extra "funky" flavor to the dishes where applied - good thing for me, not so much for my picky eater son. Tortillas appeared to be hand made, another plus. My date ordered the daily special, chicken tinga chilaquiles. Very fresh, flavorful, and delicious, clearly made-to-order with homemade, thick & crispy totopos. Will we be back? Yeah, definitely! La Señora offers a novel menu with items rarely seen around Austin, and the service is friendly & welcoming. Seating area is covered & kept tidy. It's like taking a little trip to Mexico without the airfare cost or travel time. Next visit, I'd love to try the tortas, tacos de canasta, tostadas de siberia, burritos (best price point), and the tepache, a kombucha-like drink from pineapples. To better manage my spending, I'll come prepared with the right questions in Spanish about prices before I complete my order. I'd give them four stars had they not missed one of my tacos and my husbands two tamales that he ordered. I ordered three tacos, a fajita (was okay, little grisly wouldn't get again) Birria taco (which was missing from our order so can't evaluate that) and a campechano which was delicious! (If all I got was three Campechano I would've been happy). I also got an elote corn which was solid. Besides the missing tamales, my husband got Tacos de Canasta which he enjoyed. We were finally able to try this place but I wasn't real impressed with the food, the canasta tacos were ok and I also had a desebrada gordita it was a little plain but good fresh masa we also had some sopes to tick to my liking on the other hand Coconut agua Fresca was really good, we might come back for the tamales on Saturday, the Services was friendly and Ambience was cute little cover with bunch of encouraging quotes and decorations hanging from trees. read more

We have been on the hunt for delicious Mexican food since moving here from California (where the best Mexican food lives within the US), and this place w amazing. We ordered the Pastor, Cochinita Pibil, and Barbacoa street tacos and they did not disappoint. Food was fresh, very eye appealing and so flavorful. We forgot to take pictures of the food itself because scarfed it down. Their set up with the bus and seating area felt very warm, clean and inviting. You can tell they were very thoughtful about how they decorated. Even my 6 year old said, "this feels very friendly". Definitely worth it! read more

I consider myself a bit of a taco truck connoisseur--I've tried more taco stands and trucks around Texas than I can count. So when I say that La Señora Del Zacahuil is currently my favorite, that's no small statement. I went once, loved it so much that I had to go back just a few days later, and I still feel like I've barely scratched the surface of their massive menu. Most taco trucks keep it simple with a handful of meats and a few standard items, but La Señora Del Zacahuil offers a menu that's larger than some sit-down Mexican restaurants I have been to. I was instantly impressed by the variety, with so many of my favorite authentic Mexican dishes available, some of which being very hard for me to find around here, that it's impossible to try everything you want in one or even two visits. And in Austin where taco truck pricing has gotten out of hand, La Señora Del Zacahuil stands apart with great prices, offering exceptional value that is truly worth every penny. On my first trip, I had to start with the street tacos. I tried the Carne Asada, Al Pastor, Discada, and Chicharrón Prensado--all of them absolutely amazing. Both times I have gone, my food came out hot and faster than I was expecting. Also, I'm not going to name names or anything, but this truck is serving up Discada and Al Pastor that stands up to, if not stomps on the Discada and Al Pastor currently being served at places here in Austin that literally name themselves after these meats. When I returned my second time, I met La Señora herself, and she offered me a sample of her signature Zacahuil dish. Of course, I wasn't about to say no to that. I had never tried Zacahuil before, and it reminded me of a "deconstructed Tamal," but I enjoyed it way more than any Tamales I've ever had--and I've had plenty. The meat was tender, juicy, and bursting with flavor, while the pounded corn added the perfect texture and an incredible aroma. She even served it to me on a banana leaf, which was a fantastic touch. By the time my Gorditas arrived, I was already almost full just from the massive "sample" La Señora gave me, but there was no way I was stopping there. Everything I've tried at La Señora Del Zacahuil has been exceptional, and I still have so much left on my list--next time, I'm going for the Cochinita Pibil. A few things that make this place stand out even more: They serve both Chicharrón Prensado and Discada, which I have found to be surprisingly hard to get in this city. Their Agua Frescas are delicious. They're consistently open, and you can even phone in orders. The truck itself is a converted bus with a covered outdoor seating area. Plus, there's plenty of parking space available. And most importantly, the women working inside the truck are some of the sweetest, kindest people you could ever hope to meet. La Señora Del Zacahuil has set the bar high for taco trucks in this city. I can't wait to go back again. read more

My parents ordered Menudo they rate it a 9.5 Wait time was a bit much but so worth the delicious food. Tables are right outside food truck and parking in the corner store.
