I have been coming here since I was little and I love La Tolteca! But the past few orders have had problems. I ordered a taquitos plate and paid for home style guacamole but they put the runny guacamole. Didn't find out until we got home. Then the next time I ordered food, all of the orders of rice were hard like it was old rice that had been sitting there. Been a regular here since 2009. The place is huge inside with plenty of seating & parking outside. Chips (on the thin side) & salsa are good & addicting once you start eating it. Sometimes I see people picking up a whole bag full of chips to go. Tried various menu items but we always seem to order the same items. I don't really care for the tacos or enchiladas. So between me & the hubby our favorites are: 1) Chicken & Beef Compuesta with beans (They give you A LOT of meat and comes with a watery-ranch-style dressing, but it's flavorful) 2) Chile Verde 3) Tortilla Soup (Tuesdays Only - so much chicken!) Complement the meal with an Orange Bang and Horchata and I'm a happy camper. Their staff have always been good to us. Bringing us some Tapatio, refilling our drinks, salsa and even getting us more tortilla chips. The only thing is that sometimes when you're in line waiting to order, they take a while. My family and I stopped in in Father'a Day and were told they were no longer taking orders for dine-in service. We were told the kitchen was an hour behind in food orders. The inside was not crowded as there were still tables to be seated at. It was only 4 in the afternoon and not at the peak dinner time. I couldn't help notice that phone orders were still being taken regardless. It's such a shame they're priorities are backwards. You would think maybe they would stop phone orders and focus on their dine-in customers before resuming phone orders. People take the time to come out and enjoy some food and drinks yet phone orders are more of a priority. I supported this business at least once a week during the covid shut-down as was disappointing in how they treated their dine-in customers. So sad. I will definitely not patronizing this business as much anymore. Enjoyed a nice dinner at Max's right up the street where we got far better service. read more

This is a great place to catch a meal if you are near Azusa or Glendora. I counted 3 other Mexican restaurants within the block but will vouch for this place. The place opens at 10 am and you stand in line to place your order. Once the order is placed, you receive your chips and salsa along with a number. The seating is outdoors for Los Angeles County and 10 plus tables are situated outside. Within minutes, a server brings your meal along with silverware. The carne asada tacos are excellent along with the beans and rice. I highly recommend this place to anyone who wants authentic Mexican food. read more

Delicious Mexican food. One of our favorites and that's saying a lot since there are Mexican restaurants all over. They make all their products in house and their chips are amazing. You can totally taste the quality. Their carnitas dish is the best! As are their crunchy tacos and enchiladas. My family can't get enough. I love that each plate comes with its own bag of chips and salsa that way my family doesn't have to fight over them. I do wish they made their guacamole with less tomatoes but that's a personal preference because I don't like tomatoes so I always give it to my husband and he happily eats it. Unfortunately I have gone here for over 10 years since I found this place. I went there for Mother's Day because La Tolteca is my moms favorite place. The food was a solid 7 today. However still tasted like la tolteca. But the reason I gave 1 star is because my mom and I witnessed a worker dump the salsa from a table that left about 10 minutes before he cleaned the table into 3 plastic containers and put a lid on it. How gross!!! After working 10+ years in the food industry, I know the procedures and regulations to follow to discard food. In all my years I've never put food into a container with a LID. If it's being thrown out I have no use for the LID or container. Definitely disgusting because the plastic containers look alot like the one I get to go in my breakfast burrito. If the worker did what we think he did that is just disgusting. Should definitely not put any used food into containers. It wasn't "to go" because I helped the customers out the door. This place has fell off. I don't know what it is, but all the food, taste, bland and microwaved my most recent experience was not very good. I had ordered the combination plate and everything taste it off. The rice was so bland and tasteless. The beans were sour and bitter and the Chile verde barely had any meat in. It was like a roller coaster ride.. Last night 5-17-2023 I ordered the Chile Relleno Plate at $12.50 ($13.78 with tax) to go. I was excited as I have not had a Chile Relleno in a long time. Tolteca is a go to local Mexican spot. Order at the counter and they bring it to the table, or go sit in the bar area and have the full service experience! Both are great options! Everything on the menu is great. Chips and salsa are included and they have some of the best of both in the SGV. The vibe is pretty noisy and busy at the counter and main seating area. There is a much slower, more relaxed ambiance in the back bar area. Both great for whatever experience you are looking for. La Tolteca has arguably some of the best tamales I have ever had in SoCal. For years, every time my family was craving tamales we would order them here and drive long distances to pick them up. Unfortunately, the quality of the service has gotten gradually worse recently. The staff are no longer as friendly and despite calling in several hours or a day in advance, they have started making us wait 30+ minutes after arriving to get our order. It's as if calling ahead doesn't matter anymore, they wait until you get there before they start making it. They don't even care that you are sitting there for so long when the whole point of calling ahead was to not have to do that. They would easily get a 4 or 5 star rating if their service was as prompt, courteous and as good as it used to be. I've been here a few times so I though I'd come for lunch again and taste the food. The restaurant is very open and sounds are amplified by the high, vaulted, ceilings, and the tile floors. Since it's so open, it doesn't have a very warm feeling. You order at the counter and then they bring the food out to you. I ordered a burrito with extra cheese. Not only did they put extra cheese in the burrito, they brought out a side of cheese to go with it. Now that's some extra cheese! The taste of the food was good... The plate was extremely hot (they didn't warn me about how hot it was-this could be an issue in the making for someone). The servers were okay, but nothing special. I wanted to leave a better tip, but they didn't do a whole lot. Overall, it's a decent value for your money, but not a "full service" Mexican restaurant. read more

I have been coming to La Tolteca for over 20 years and the most recent time I came I ordered over 100 dollars worth of chips and salsa for a party, I also ordered a couple tacos to sit down and eat at the restaurant since I was hungry. I went up to get some chips and salsa for the table as I always do when I eat here and they would not give them to me because I did not order a plate of taco which include rice and beans. After I spent over 100 dollars already for food for a party, I would think they could just give us some as a courtesy even though we did not get the taco plate. This was apparently too much to ask for. I am just disappointed with the customer service provided by Letty and the restaurant manager, especially with how long I have been a patron here. La Tolteca is a staple of Azusa. Their food is good, it's priced right, and the decor is nice. You may be familiar with their brand already if you shop at local grocery stores in the SGV. They sell their own brand of tortillas. You can also buy trays of food direct from them for large parties. My go to favorite menu item is the shrimp burrito. It's loaded with big delicious pieces of shrimp, beans, rice, cheese and chipotle sauce. Their chipotle sauce is next level good. I always order an additional side of chipotle sauce ($1) and then make it a wet burrito by drizzling the extra sauce on top. Pro tip, get the chunky guacamole and slap some of that on top and you're in for a experience you won't regret. If you order a combo plate then unlimited chips and salsa is included. If not then you have to buy it for a couple bucks. I would encourage you to eat the food there. The atmosphere is fun, especially on Dodger game night. They give you way more Guac when you eat it there. The Togo containers are smaller. They have a newly renovated bar area with large TVs and a full service bar. As I am writing this, I'm eating the most guero shredded beef taco this side of Taco Lita. I mean these tacos are hard shell with shredded beef, lettuce AND CHEESE! Growing up about 3 hours north of Mexico and in a primarily Hispanic neighborhood, I know the difference between authentic tacos and quero tacos. There is nothing like a corn tortilla with a few slices of asada, cilantro and cebollas, maybe a glop of quacamole. You won't find that here. You're gonna get a fried tortilla, a small salad worth of lettuce, cheese and the mildest salsa you've ever experienced. It's like ketchup with pepper in it. These tacos are like my Ohio born mom made on Tuesdays. These tacos along with a Shasta cola...you're golden. I'm not saying this is bad. I'm saying that sometimes you need to step off and get into safe territory. There is nothing here that will harm you. We went on a weekday and it was busy. You order at entrance and then sit down. Because it was so busy, we had trouble finding a table and had to clean up what table we did get. We had a wet burrito and the cashier who took our order told us the green salsa isn't spicy, which was totally wrong...we should have chosen another salsa that wasn't so hot because it made it hard to eat. The taquitos and enchiladas were better. Tacos are just okay. Nothing specisl. I would say the food in general was just average.
