$10 for a small cup of soup that didn't taste as good as a can of campbells. How is this place in business?!??

This is my favorite lunch place near work. The Mexican tortilla soup is spicy and delicious (get it with cheese), the turkey chili is good, and the mac & cheese is decent. (They only make it once a week, usually on Wednesdays.) You've got a convenient lunch served with bread for $10 and there usually isn't a line. The staff is friendly and will remember you. read more

This location used to be great but it has gone downhill. The salads are poorly made, the produce is horrible, and the staff has their heads in the clouds. Salads are disgusting and poorly made, go to subway and pay half the price. The only good thing about this location is their soups but don't order on a Thursday because they are old and sometimes all the ingredients with no broth. Ordered a soup from this Ladle & Leaf location the other day through the Ritual app, and it was ready for me when I arrived. The cashier behind the counter was pretty friendly, and even made sure to offer me some bread to go with the soup. Ordered an organic, Southwestern Corn Chowder. It came with corn, red peppers, chilis and potato bits. And along with the bread, was decently tasty. My main complaint however was the portion size. Despite ordering a large for $7.34, and knowing that Ladle & Leaf portion sizes tend to run smaller, my large bowl seriously looked more like a small bowl anywhere else. After a few scoops, I was done with both the bread and soup. If a large was this size, I can only imagine how tiny a small is. read more

It's the fast food of soup & salads! If you ever find yourself in the Embarcadero hungry and cold, do yourself a favor and come visit LADLE & LEAF. That is exactly what happened to me, and man was I thankful for finding this Gem. I ordered the Brazilian chicken soup, it was so good. Shredded chicken, yuka and other stuff chilling in a rich and creamy coconut broth. It was so good. It also comes with fresh sourdough bread. I went here today because its very close to the job and I'm busy. Don't follow the ingredients on the board - they aren't correct. I ordered (this is the board description): "GRILLED CHICKEN & RAINBOW CHARD: Grilled chicken, flageolet beans, rainbow chard, carrots & white wine with shredded Parmigiano Reggiano & croutons." Imagine my surprise when I got back to the office and found I had purchased a TOMATO BASED SOUP. I HATE TOMATO. Why did they not list that on the board since that's a MAIN ingredient? Quick meal out the door! I placed my order with mealpal and it was a quick and easy! I ordered the quinoa feta avocado grain bowl and it was ready when I arrived. In fact, I was a bit early!! The bowl itself was very delicious and healthy. My meal came with a side of sourdough bread. Only issue is that the mixed greens was a bit wilted and old. Sometimes looking for a good breakfast in the Financial District that isn't overpriced can be a challenge, but this place has it all! The set up of the business is very nice, welcoming, and super clean! The people that work here are extremely pleasant, greeting you with a smile and friendly convo throughout the conversation. The truth is I have never been into a Ladle & Leaf before. I liked the large choice of healthy food. Interior is also nice, fresh and clean. So I went for the Korean Chicken Salad out of curiosity. Luckily I came after the rush hour because my salad took a long time to be prepared. Obviously the man didn't knew which ingredients composed my salad and had to regularly check his notes. For the rest everything went fine. The salad was fresh and tasty, I had a Bai pomegranate infusion as drink. For a first time with Ladle & Leaf, I can say I was happy with the experience and will be returning if I'm in a mood for a salad or a soup. read more

I got a chipotle chicken half salad, and I am just appaled by the lengths this place goes to cheat its customers. This is my 3rd time getting a salad and my experience has always been the same. The half salad costs $10.92 (including tax) which I don't mind. What I do mind, however, is the servers here don't even fill up the serving spoons for all the ingredients. They put less than half of each spoonful. The tortilla chips in my salad are less than 4. And the servers drop part of the salad carelessly while transferring it to a box. You can see the quantity and the empty spaces in my salad box. It is okay if you charge almost $11 for your salad, but atleast be honest about the quantity and your service. Don't try to cut costs by giving less than the customer paid for. Very bad value for money, and I am not going here again read more

Located where Soup Company used to be in FiDi. I've tried them a couple of times now (only for salads). Salads are decent (trying to replicate Mixt Greens), while also offering soup and sandwich options. One thing to consider...if you ask for a steak/chicken salad to be made without meat, they will still charge you full price. (for example, no break if you want the Thai Peanut Chicken Salad without Chicken) Service is good and friendly, even with the long lines. Would rate them 3.5 stars overall. Can't give 4 because there are many better lunch options in the area. read more

TL:DR version: They are insanely slow even if the line is short. This is true for soup, salad, or sandwich. Don't bother going. This is such a frustrating place. I work in the building, so I could literally eat here 5 days a week if the service wasn't as absurdly slow as it is. The lines back up quickly, even if you go during non peak hours. Seriously, I've gone at 2:30 to avoid the lunch rush and waited for 12 minutes before I could order...with 2 people in front of me. Good lord, why are they so slow? Mixt Greens, Cafe Venue, and other salad competitors are so much faster for the same thing. I really don't understand why they haven't figured this out yet. The food is fine, the price is okay, but the service is horrible. I don't mean the people there are mean. I mean their staffing is wholly inadequate. They need more people and the company needs to offer better training. If a staff member sees 5 people waiting for soup with no one at that part of the counter, they shouldn't avert their eyes. They should get someone to come out and serve the soup. The last couple times I've tried going in, they didn't have any of the pre-made salads (so I could avoid standing in a 20 minute line for a salad). I went at 11:10 a.m. Either they stopped making them, or everyone else is as frustrated as I am and they start grabbing them sooner. So, I am essentially not going there for lunch anymore. read more

I caught a Summer time cold, and feeling under the weather. Though I have walked by 100's of times, until today, I never tried this location. I ordered a large Grandma Mary's Chicken Soup for $7.50 to go. Personally, I liked the fact that I could have it served without noodles. I'm usually hesitant to get soups in places like this because they get super salty as the soup broth evaporates. Fortunately, today's soup was flavorful and not too salty. So, I'll give it 4 stars as it hits the spot of what I was looking for today. I had suspected that perhaps restaurants were giving watered-down versions of their typical meals to MealPass users, so I figured it'd be a good test to go to a place where I'd eaten before. I tested my theory on Ladle and Leaf's Napa Valley Orchard salad, and was super pleased that what I picked up was the real deal, full-sized salad I've had before at Ladle & Leaf. (They even offered me bread when I picked up my salad from the Battery Street location!) Good amount of chicken, grapes, apples, candied walnuts ... and I paid way less with MealPass than I did when I purchased the same salad directly from the restaurant. Can't beat that! read more

It is a fresh and clean salad and sandwich place perfect for lunches during office hours. They also offer breakfast although I never try it. I had their pre-designed seasonal vsalad of Vietnamese Chicken and Rice Noodle salad for half size. To be honest, the taste is good and the lettuce and other ingredients are definitely fresh. I just don't see why this would cost so much as over $10 since the portion is kind of small. Then again, this is San Francisco, where stores charge an arm and a leg because they can. I wasn't sure what I would get when I read the reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised with the food when we came in for lunch. Service was prompt and they were pleasant. There were four of us, and everybody was happy and liked what they got - Grilled Kimchi Steak, Chipotle Chicken Sandwich, Cabo chicken lime salad, and the Roast Beef and Blue cheese salad. Four words: Smokey Joe grain bowl (or shit, is it SmokeyJoe grain bowl and thus 3 words?) Agree with a lot of the complaints, the line is slow (especially for salads, and especially vs a place like Foccacia which runs like a well oiled machine). It's a bit pricey, though certainly not out of whack with what you can get elsewhere in FiDi. But the salad ingredients are very high quality, there's a really good assortment, and their seasonal stuff especially is really tasty. They have a rewards program, which basically works out to $5 back for every $60 you spend, which is good value. And, the half salads are pretty filling, especially something like my beloved SJGB that has some actual grains in it. I'm a big guy, so I always expect to pay a bit more to actually be full, so maybe that's why I'm more comfortable with the prices here. The people are also consistently nice, especially the cashier Priscilla who always gives me a big welcome when I walk in. I eat here probably 3 times a week, and expect that I'll continue to do so. read more

I've lost my patience with this place. The service is SOOOOO SLOW! I go in regularly in the morning because I like their avocado toast, but it is insane how slow the service is. There were two other customers in the restaurant this am and it took over 10 minutes for them to make my avocado toast. People, we are talking a slice of bread with avocado on it! That should take 30 seconds to make. I've also given up going in for lunch. They have 1 woman making sandwiches at lunch time, and no one will help you order a sandwich but her. If she is making a phone order for a big group, too bad, you have to wait. No one else will help you. I'm not sure what the deal is with the people that work here, but they all seem to be standing around either flirting with each other or doing nothing. FOOD POISONING! So I've never eaten at this place before and ordered a half sandwich, cup of soup and some of their iced tea. When I went to the drink fountain, I could see the containers looked really dirty. I figured it was just some sediment from the tea leaves and citrus. I then tasted it and my immediate thought is that it was rancid. Here comes the stupid part on me: instead of pointing it out to the staff, I hustled to work bringing the tea and food with me. Completely horrible idea. The food tasted ok, but I took a few more sips of the tea before I just threw it out (I hate wasting food so will eat stuff even when it seems a little off). The last time I got food poisoning was at least 20 years ago, and I have never been more sick than I was in the past 24hrs. I ate/drank at 2pm, by 6pm I was having intense abdominal cramping. By 8pm I was feeling dizzy, shakes, and sweating. I got myself home by 9pm and was intensely vomiting and crapping all night. So long story short, my fault for eating/drinking something that tasted obviously bad. Their fault for not keeping the facility cleaner and for putting out food that was very much past it's expiration date. read more

Today I even brought 5 other coworkers from my office, it's my second time dining here and first time for my coworkers. In summary: we are not coming back. Mixt Greens staffs are more courteous, better and quicker service, better portions, and they will get our business. We arrived at Ladle & Leaf on Battery St at approximate 1:10-1:15pm on Thursday 2/18/2016 and we experienced the following: *Bad service (except for the young man at the cashier who deserve 4 stars, everyone else from salad to soup, and everyone else behind the salad bar deserve 1 star) *Salad wasn't really tossed. My quarter of an avocado was in a chunk in my salad. *Salad bar person helping me didn't know what edamame was? *Portions were very small even though I paid for 5 toppings! EVERYONE BEWARE, 5 toppings means you get very little of all 5 of them. Maybe just get 1 topping so you don't pay extra for the other 4 and not get your money's worth... *My salad dressing was out after one squirt and the guy just left it. Half way through my meal I had to come back for more dressings, which apparently there were more bottles just right behind him, but he was too lazy to grab it when serving me. *My soup was nothing special and it definitely does not look healthy. My cup was only HALF FULL and I asked for my chips separate but they didn't follow instructions and had thrown in chips in my half cup of soup. Why throw chips in? They turn completely mushy in 1 minute and I don't get to enjoy the crunch. Also I deserve a full cup if I'm paying for this... *The last time I had clam chowder here, it was watery, and no clam. This is the old SF Soup Company right? Why are they so stingy with their soup and seafood ingredients? If they are cutting corners to save money, and serving small portions to save money, what other ways are they trying to save money? I mean, they are not compromising the food they are serving us are they? I think they are compromising the portions and I'm sure I'm not the only person noticing this. *The lines here are confusing. *My coworkers were in the soup line to order soup and sandwich. Just so everyone knows, there are two lines, one for salad, one for soup. She was in the soup line for soup and sandwich. She placed her order for both items, got her soup already, and she just stood there and waited for the sandwich. Finally she asked, where is my sandwich? Then the staff responds, oh, you have to go that other line. Well, why didn't she say so from the beginning? My coworker stood there and ordered BOTH items with her. She couldn't say so about the sandwich, and had to wait for my coworker to follow up with her? So my coworker had to get in a SECOND LINE, just to get her half sandwich to pair with her soup that she already got. And the line was already long. Couldn't the people behind the salad bar just prepare her sandwich from where she was standing before? Was it necessary to make her get in another line? It's not like first line was wrong. There were only lines for soup and for salad. There was no line for sandwich. *We were in line for a long time because, as mentioned, some of us had to wait in TWO LINES to get our food. During this time we watched and saw a lot of INEFFICIENCIES behind the salad bar. Customer would ask for one thing, and that salad or soup person will pass the message on to someone behind them for them to run around. Sometimes the request is passed on to a 3rd person. Really? All the effort of passing on the request for someone else to do, and explaining it multiple times, the first person could've just done it. IT WAS WEIRD. read more

Great selection for salad. I made my own salad and they made it in less than 3 minutes. I already kinda knew what I wanted in the salad. What I like more about ladle n leaf over mixtd greens is that they have corn available for your salad. Honestly, that was a big plus. read more

Update your freakin' menu - breakfast burrito is $5.50 on the laminated menu - guess what? It's $6.75 minus tax when you pay for it. I asked them about it and they replied - "that's the old menu". Honestly, even if the were $5.50, I don't think the burrito is worth the price. read more

The staff is rude, I said Good Morning and they just stared at me. Looks like all breakfast menu is frozen. Frozen frittatas, even frozen bagel and egg. My son got a bagel and egg and I tried the frittata. So they just take it out from the freezer and fried it or put it in the microwave (I didn't see). I could taste the flavor of the freezer. But in somehow it wasn't cook all the way trough. In the center was cold (I mean really cold) and gooey (I think for the egg). You could get a serious bacterial infection or something from eating that frozen, raw thing. So I complain and they offer to give me another one. Seriously? who wants to take another risk, I was expecting a refund. I couldn't get rid of the freezer taste in my mouth, awful! read more
