I love Mixt for a quick and easy lunch on the go. The staff is super friendly and the ingredients are always fresh and bright which keeps me coming back. The one thing that throws me off is how inconsistent the portions can be. I order the same thing almost every time but sometimes my extra egg is only a few crumbles and other times it feels like a full egg. The same thing happens with olives where one day I get just a couple and the next I get a big scoop. On a warm summer day, nothing beats a fresh Orchard salad from Mixt. What I like about Mixt is that they are consistent. They have several locations throughout the bay area, and every salad is prepared the same using the freshest ingredients. I have tried most of their salads, but my favorite is the Orchard. It's a mixture of kale, mixed greens, grilled chicken, Applewood smoked bacon, sliced apples, sharp cheddar, avocado, toasted almonds, herbs and balsamic vinaigrette dressing. If I'm in the mood for $15ish salads, this is the salad joint near work that I frequent most. I like that they are speedy and even though the salads are overpriced (as everything else in SF), their portions are huge and I usually only eat half and save the other half for dinner or a snack later. Thank goodness work pays for these salads but I probably couldn't get myself to spend this much everyday on lunch so I consider myself very fortunate and privileged. If I'm feeling devilish I will order the Caesar salad and do half romaine hearts and half kale. I think too much icy romaine is too watery in my opinion. The kale adds extra dark fiber and a different mouth feel. The Orchard is also delicious but I would do it sans bacon (what kind of American am I?) The bacon is too hard in my opinion. I usually ask for the sauce on the side as I like to control my sauce intake. Sometimes light on the sauce to me means something completely to the sauce handler. Also every time I'm here I always feel like I have to yell my order because the place gets very loud during peak hours. My boyfriend had walnut shells in his salad that he kept discovering and were painful to hit... the food overall was solid, the ingredients are fresh and healthy but honestly just overrated and expensive. The atmosphere isn't anything special, basically a grab and go place with a few tables inside to sit at. None of the ingredients are labeled (except for the types of lettuce/greens behind the counter), and it's unclear how much everything costs until you are finally paying. There are some menus right when you enter the store, but nothing near the front of the line or behind the counter, so definitely try to grab one if you want anything other than a custom salad. For reference, a build-your-own salad with 5 toppings is about $11 (protein costs extra). The employees also aren't very helpful - in my experiences here, they have been fairly rude and unwelcoming. With all of the other great places in FiDi to grab salads, this Mixt unfortunately does not rise to the top of that list. read more

These guys are literally located downstairs in my office however I rarely come here on my own unless I'm with co-workers because I don't have deep pockets for this place. I remember at least 7-8 years ago when I first went to a Mixt, it was already expensive and obviously the prices have gone up since so it's become worse. The one and only salad I ever come here for is the bachelor. Practically every single ingredient in the salad are my favorite and to no surprise this is one of the most expensive salads on the menu close to $17 (back then it was $14). I'm also a little sad and that the way they prepare the steak for the bachelor has changed. Previously they'd be beautifully slice pieces of state or as now they're all cubed and that can potentially be overcooked... I probably wouldn't nitpick this much if it didn't cost as much as it did. The steak on these salads is more chewy and flavored compared to the steak at Tender Greens, but they give you less of it. Potatoes are good, and in general the whole salad together works. I like the lightness of the goat cheese that they use here, and it really works well with the arugula. Today I decided to do the make your own, which is your choice of base + 5 non-meat toppings (including avocado!) for $9.95. They have a large selection of salad topping items, and all looked appealing. Got a ginger molasses cookie as well-- the taste was alright, could be more gingery and less salty though. Texture seemed like it'd been sitting around for a couple days. One make your own salad + steak topping + cookie = $20. Definitely steep for lunch, although a more jam-packed salad compared to Tender Greens. The employees there are pretty great, in particular I always have this person named Vicky help and she's pretty much got my order down by now. In general though the staff there is great and they seem to recognize me at this point so it's a nice change in the busy streets of the financial district. Yep, I have become one of "those people" who values convenience and freshness (and pretty looking food) over just making it my dang self. That is, one or two days a week... I go to Mixt and let them make my lunch for me. Always fresh, tasty, and "safe" (I am gluten intolerant and there are no mysteries or hidden gluten here). I almost always make my own 5-ingredient salad - usually baby spinach, seasonal veggies, almonds or walnuts, and a vinaigrette. I throw some extra protein in there when I'm starving. This keeps most salads around $11... which is expensive, yes, but honestly not in the long run compared to a lot of other lunch places in the FiDi. Plus, I am in their Thanx loyalty program, so I get a freebie for every 10 salads I buy. (Hint: other freebies with the Thanx app, too - get it!). All the ingredients are top notch. So often when I get a salad from a restaurant, there are disappointments - sugary, weird dressing or grizzly fat on the chicken or issues with ripeness or mealy tomatoes. Not here. They really pride themselves on freshness and only including the best stuff. I love how friendly, organized, and attentive the cashiers are, too. I always place an online order ahead, so I can just swing in and grab it out of their pickups cooler/case (big time saver, and nice on days I am talked out!). Sometimes they are a few minutes behind on orders, and when I need to wait, they are very on-it when it comes to helping get me happy and with salad in hand ASAP. There are also a few tables so you can eat inside or outside on a nice day - but I recommend taking it to go and sitting in a local park or open space (Crocker rooftop, St. Mary's, Union Square). They offer a variety of salad and grain bowl options to choose from or you could build your own salad. Even though the line was so long, it moved VERY fast so don't turn away if you see a long line. PRO TIP: Order online and then pick up around 11-11:30AM. The earlier the better. Simply ordering online isn't really going to help that much unless you also pick up earlier. Trust me, or you'll end up waiting too. I can't think of another place where you can easily customize salad. It's super easy and portions are great. Build your own salad gets you greens and 5 toppings excluding meat. They have a good topping selection with a some rotational ones depending on the season to keep things exciting. I will say service is lacking. ESPECIALLY during the crazy lunch hour. It can't really be helped though since they can only pack in so many salad tossers behind the counter. However, it is frustrating to watch people as they stand in line forever and by the time they get up to counter, they still don't know what they want.... really?!
